Resolutie 1973 van de Veiligheidsraad van de Verenigde Naties werd door de VN-Veiligheidsraad aangenomen op 17 maart 2011. Ze had betrekking op de situatie in Libi in verband met de opstand aldaar. De resolutie, die werd ingediend door Frankrijk, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en Libanon stelde een vliegverbod boven Libi in en machtigde alle VN-lidstaten om, met uitsluiting van een buitenlandse bezettingsmacht op Libisch grondgebied, alle noodzakelijke maatregelen te nemen voor de bescherming van de burgerbevolking in Libi. Tien lidstaten van de Raad stemden vr de resolutie. Naast de drie indieners waren dit de Verenigde Staten, Bosni en Herzegovina, Colombia, Gabon, Portugal, Nigeria en Zuid-Afrika. Vijf landen onthielden zich van stemming, namelijk Rusland, China, Brazili, Duitsland en India.
Fases
• Fase 1: Uitschakelen van de luchtverdediging
• Fase 2: Monitoren van schendingen van de no-flyzone en van aanvallen op burgers
Belangrijkste punten van de Resolutie
• Eist de onmiddellijke instelling van een staakt-het-vuren en een volledige stopzetting van het geweld en alle aanvallen tegen en misbruik van burgers;
• Machtigt de lidstaten (...), hetzij nationaal handelend of door middel van regionale organisaties of regelingen, (...) om met aanvallen bedreigde burgers en bevolkte gebieden in Libi, met inbegrip van Benghazi, te beschermen met uitsluiting van een buitenlandse bezettingsmacht in welke vorm dan ook op enig deel van het Libische grondgebied;
• Besluit een verbod in te stellen op alle vluchten in het luchtruim van Libi om burgers te helpen beschermen;
• Besluit verder dat het verbod opgelegd bij paragraaf 6 niet van toepassing is op vluchten die uitsluitend humanitaire hulp als doel hebben, zoals het leveren of het vergemakkelijken van verlenen van bijstand, met inbegrip van medische benodigdheden, voedsel, humanitaire hulpverleners en bijstand in verband met, of voor het afvoeren van vreemdelingen uit Libi, is evenmin van toepassing op vluchten die door de paragrafen 4 of 8, noch op andere vluchten die noodzakelijk worden geacht door de staten die handelen onder de vergunning die is verleend in paragraaf 8 ten behoeve van de Libische volk, en dat deze vluchten worden gecordineerd met een mechanisme overeenkomstig met paragraaf 8;
• Machtigt de lidstaten (...), hetzij nationaal handelend of door middel van regionale organisaties of regelingen, om alle nodige maatregelen te nemen om de naleving van het verbod op vluchten zoals zijn opgelegd in paragraaf 6 hierboven, zo nodig af te dwingen;
• Beslist dat alle staten alle vliegtuigen die geregistreerd zijn in Libi of eigendom zijn van of gexploiteerd worden door Libische onderdanen of bedrijven de toestemming dienen te weigeren om van hun grondgebied op te stijgen, erop te landen, of over hun grondgebied te vliegen, tenzij de betreffende vlucht is goedgekeurd door de bij resolutie 1970 ingestelde commissie of in het geval van een noodlanding. • Belgi: stuurt zes F16 fighters, ook is de mijnenveger BNS Narcis in het gebied.
• Canada: stuurt zeven CF-18 fighters 140 soldaten naar de regio, het Halifax-class fregat HMCS Charlottetown is ook betrokken bij de operatie.
• Denemarken: stuurt zes F-16 fighters.
• Frankrijk: heeft Mirage en Rafale vliegtuigen op de bases Istres and at Solenzara gestationeerd. Tankvliegtuigen zijn gestationeerd op Istres. De anti-air destroyer Forbin is vlakbij het gebied. De carrier Charles de Gaulle wordt met haar volledige strike group naar de Libische kust uitgezonden. Tijdens een persconferentie werd gezegd dat er op dit moment (20-03) twintig vliegtuigen boven Libi actief zijn.
• Griekenland: stuurt vier F-16 fighters, twee fregatten en een AWACS.
• Itali: volgens het Pentagon nemen er elf fregatten deel aan de eerst aanvalsgolf.
• Nederland: Stuurt zes F-16's, een tanker en de Hr.ms. Haarlem, een mijnenveger.
• Noorwegen: stuurt zes F-16 fighters en een P-3 Orion surveillance vliegtuig. Hij kondigde ook aan humanitaire hulp te bieden.
• Qatar: volgens de Qatar News Agency zullen er tussen de vier en zes vliegtuigen (Mirages) meehelpen met het in stand houden van de no-fly zone boven Libi.
• Spanje: stuurt vier F-18 fighters, een tanker, one F100 frigate, one submarine and one P-3 Orion surveillance vliegtuig.
• Verenigde Arabische Emiraten: Heeft aangekondigd 24 vliegtuigen (Mirages en F-16’s) te zullen sturen.
• Verenigd Koninkrijk: Cameron heeft bevestigd dat Typhoon en Tornadofighters mee zullen participeren in de operatie, samen met tankers en surveillance vliegtuigen.
• Verenigde Staten: de VS hebben elf schepen uitgezonden, waaronder de carrier USS Enterprise. Ook worden doormiddel van Tomahawk-raketten SAM-sites uitgenomen. Volgens een woordvoerder van het Pentagon zijn er drie B-2 bommenwerpers en negentien F-16 en F-18 fighters actief boven Libi, als ook AC-130 PSYOP toestellen. Er zijn U-2 spionagevliegtuigen gestationeerd op Cyprus.
NAVO
• Heeft permanent AWACS vliegtuigen in de lucht, bemanningen worden geleverd door diverse lidstaten.
Landen die mogelijk de no-fly zone militair zullen steunen:
• Albanie: heeft bekend gemaakt klaar te zijn om te helpen.
• Jordani
• Kroati: heeft beloofd hulp te sturen, al dan niet militair.
• Saoedi-Arabie: Min. BuZa heeft bekend gemaakt mogelijk airstrikes uit te zullen voeren.
• Duitsland: schijnt indirect steun te gaan geven door posities in Afghanistan te gaan versterken, stuurt mogelijk AWACS-bemanningen. Ook wordt de campagne in Libi gecordineerd vanaf een militaire basis nabij Ramstein. (zie hieronder)
• Turkije: heeft bekend gemaakt de 'nodige voorbereidingen' te gaan treffen.
• Zweden: heeft aangegeven steun te zullen verlenen wanneer de NATO daarom vraagt. Stuurt humanitaire hulp.

Libyan government minders took a bus load of journalists to Tajura east of Tripli today where we saw a house in a rural area with a big garden. There was apparent damage caused by a missile which had landed in the garden. There were fragments of a US air-to-surface missile. A window and some furniture had been broken. According to the father, his 18-year-old daughter was injured and taken to hospital.
What was difficult to understand was the link between the rocket fragments and the damage, there were also bullet holes on the wall. The general feeling was that something certainly had happened and it was an effort to underline how civilians have been victims of "colonial aggression". Surprisingly, however, we have not been taken to any hospitals. I don't doubt there have been some civilians casualties with thousands of missiles fired, but there has been no evidence of deaths to civilians on a large scale.
We spent a good hour at the house but we sped by a building at a military installation that had been flattened by a missile and a radar installation on a sand dune that was completely destroyed, now a charred hulk. But there was not a word on that.

AJDABIYAH - Libische opstandelingen hebben vrijdag opnieuw aanvallen uitgevoerd op de stad Ajdabiyah. Ze wisselden schoten met regeringstroepen van Moammar Kadhafi, die de oostelijke stad bezet houden.
De rebellen reden in vrachtwagens met raketwerpers. Pick-uptrucks hadden zware machinegeweren in de achterbak. Ze werden beschoten door de troepen van Kadhafi, die vanuit de stad twee drie granaten per minuut naar de opstandelingen wierpen.
Ibrahim Faraj, lid van de rebellenregering, zei dat stamoudsten vrijdag met Kadhafi's troepen hadden gesproken. De stamoudsten hadden de soldaten gevraagd zich over te geven. Die weigerden dat. 'Daarom gaan we door met onze zware wapens', zei Faraj.
Grootste overwinning
De herovering van Ajdabiyah zou de grootste overwinning zijn van de rebellen sinds enkele weken. De stad ligt zeer strategisch, circa 200 kilometer buiten rebellenhoofdstad Banghazi.
De opstandelingen kregen bij hun strijd vrijdagmiddag ondersteuning van gevechtsvliegtuigen van de westerse bondgenoten. Een correspondent van persbureau Reuters zag de vliegtuigen over de stad vliegen, gevolgd door drie explosies. Grote zwarte rookpluimen stegen op uit de stad.
De rebellen voelden zich bemoedigd door de luchtaanvallen. ,Ik wacht tot de vliegtuigen klaar zijn met bombarderen, voordat we naar binnen trekken', zei opstandeling Ahmed al-Misrati.
De stad Ajdaniyah zelf is inmiddels een spookstad. Fathia Meftah Ayad, een vrouw die uit de stad kon ontsnappen in een auto met haar gezin, zei dat Kadhafi's troepen 'iedereen doodschieten ouder dan tien jaar', die op straat loopt of de stad wil ontvluchten.
De vrouw zei dat vier familieleden, onder wie een jonge neef die wanhopig brood ging zoeken, zijn doodgeschoten in de laatste week. Donderdag zijn nog negen buren doorgeschoten omdat ze op straat liepen. 'Niemand loopt nog buiten', zei ze.
Krijg ik toch wel een soort van kick van.

Khalid Saad brought his family to see what all the fuss was about. His three sons, aged 18, 14 and 11, sucked on prickly artichokes as somewhere down the road not too far away Libyas rebel movement probed government positions around the town of Ajdabiya.
Dont worry, we just came to have a look, he said. Nothing bad will happen inshAllah.
This is daily life at the rebel checkpoint about 10 miles up the road from Ajdabiya. Sightseers arrive in taxis and volunteers cram themselves into pick-ups, arriving without weapons to join the fight. Journalists ask one another if they know whats going on, rebels hand out cartons of juice and theres a sort of fete-like atmosphere as people run into cousins or old friends from school. Occasionally, there are bangs and pops as people fire their weapons in the air. And everyone has a good laugh.
Then, if youve brought the kids, you find an assault rifle and have them pose with it for pictures.
Theres a weird and wonderful assortment of weapons too. Old World War Two Sten guns, shotguns and some home-made efforts are to be found among the all-too-predictable AK-47s.
One old boy, happily passing the time sitting against the boot of car had even adapted a harpoon to fire shotgun cartridges. I made the mistake of getting my camera out to take a shot of his odd, metal contraption at which point he leapt to his feet, screwed the whole thing together and fired it in the air. Thankfully it didnt explode in his face.
All day dust swirled around the couple of hundred people at the checkpoint. A truck arrived carrying a massive plastic reservoir of diesel. The driver was promptly dragged out of the cab, accused of smuggling fuel to Gaddafi soldiers, and his load was commandeered by the rebels. Everyone cheered.
A few miles further up the road, the rebels launched some exploratory patrols towards Ajdabiya but failed to win any ground. Theyll take it tomorrow, they told me, inshAllah.

En dan is dit nog maar een kleine aanval. Stel je voor dat 100 van die dingen tegelijk af worden gevuurd en dat die raketten op jou afkomen. Het gaat hier zelfs om slecht geluidskwaliteit, dus ik heb medelijden met de mensen die worden aangevallen door deze raketten.
Alleen weet ik niet of die nieuwe versies ook zulk geluid produceren.
A Qatar air force Mirage 2000-5 flew alongside a French Mirage 2000-5 fighter jet in a patrol Friday over Libyan airspace, the military said in a statement.
Qatar has deployed six Mirage fighters (rather than the two we mentioned earlier) and two C-17 transport jets to support the operation.

Why Libyan uprising is not 'people toppling dictator'
Deze gaat uit van meteen al gewapende rebellen die de zegeningen van Gaddafi's Libi nog zullen missen.
Niet de vreedzame betogingen zoals Tunesi of Egypte, dus waarom helpt het westen ze?
Toch ook nog een redelijk stuk:

Maar nog steeds geen woord over het feit dat het zo massaal over de kling jagen van zijn eigen burgers misschien wel de humanitaire druppel was.SPOILERJust two years ago the world was quite comfortable doing business with the Libyan leader Gaddafi. Now that Tripoli is under aerial bombardment and Gaddafi is hiding in one of his bunkers, the community is speculating on what is going to happen next.
Though the revolution that started in Libya originates from Egypts and Tunisias uprisings, its scenario is absolutely different from the general pattern, says Vitaly Naumkin, the Director for the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences.
While the revolts in Egypt and Tunisia were provoked and led through the Internet by people all across their respective countries, the Libyan revolution was started by one region only, Benghazi, not the Libyan capital of Tripoli. The motives for the Libyan movement are also absolutely different and have yet to be studied, Naumkin speculates.
Naumkin also believes the movement in Libya is genuine. Neither the West, nor the Islamists are pulling strings there.
It was a disaster for the West to lose such a leader as Gaddafi, who, starting in 2003 became very loyal to the West.
He [Gaddafi] started changing his country: departing from the role of the government in the countrys economy, dropping the nuclear program, says Naumkin. The relations between the main European powers, especially between Libya and France, Libya and Britain, Libya and Italy were satisfying. So why should the West start it?
The Islamists should also have no interest in overthrowing Gaddafi, Naumkin thinks, as Gaddafi initiated reconciliation with Islamists, releasing a lot of Islamic fighters from jails in 2010 and starting negotiations with former Islamic fighters.
Naumkin is surprised that such a wealthy regime as Gaddafis has failed to control the Eastern part of the country and to eliminate the 30% unemployment rate, which is the highest rate in the Arab world.
Probably, he [Gaddafi] has lost his link with reality. He was jumping from one extreme to another, from supporting various types of terrorist groups and radicals to embracing the Western states, from the West to Russia and then back to the Arab states, says Naumkin.
The West believed Gaddafis overtures, with many institutions, such as the London School of Economics, now dragged into scandals over Libyan sponsorship. This might play a grave role in upcoming elections, points out Naumkin, and Europes reputation is now badly spoiled by former reconciliation with the Libyan leader.
At this moment the West, sending its military forces to the Middle Eastern country, want to have somebody more friendly in Libya not to only to govern the countrys resources, but also to build relations with the other Arab regimes, who have never supported the current leader.
The West also has some ideological considerations: Gaddafi was presenting an alternative to the global paradigm of systems, to the main liberal Western types of society and regimes. It was some alternative and that alternative was detrimental to the interests of the promotion of the liberal type of democracy in the Arab world, Naumkin says.
This explains the Wests military involvement into the Libyan crisis. But given that the movement in Libya is genuine, it is impossible to predict how the situation will evolve, Naumkin concludes.

Empty Coffin at Mass Pro-Gaddaffi Funeral
A massive sham funeral appears to have been held for the benefit of Western journalists Thursday in Tripoli, courtesy of Gadaffi TV. CNN's Nic Robertson was on the scene with his government guide in tow but was unable to find any family members of the deceased amongst the hundreds of people present.
The crowd was angry rather than mournful he stated, and when a coffin was opened, it was empty.
Rumors that loyalists are digging up the dead in order to plant their bodies and frame the Coalition are coming to light, however Western journalists report that they have not seen any deceased persons as of yet, and would very much like to keep it that way.

Russia set to sell $2B in arms to Libya
MOSCOW, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Libya is poised to pick up more than $2 billion worth of Russian arms, focusing mainly on a fleet of 200 fighter planes, Russia's Interfax news agency reports.
The report comes hot on the heels of a key visit to Russia by Libya's defense minister, Gen. Abu-Bakr Yunis Jaber. The visit signals the latest show of renewed cooperation between Russia and the once pariah state of North Africa.
"Libya is ready to buy around 20 fighter planes, at least two divisions of S-300PMU2 air defense systems and several dozen T-90S tanks from Russia, and also to modernize more than 70 tanks and other weapons," Interfax reported citing unidentified military sources.
Officials on both sides have refused to openly concede the deal, which local media, including the reputable Vedomosti newspaper, put the contract at $2 billion.
The same newspaper reported that the deal would also include purchase of the sophisticated S-300 surface-to-air anti-missile systems, which Russia has also delivered to Iran.
Another part of the deal would focus on securing combat aircraft such as the SU-35, SU-30 and Yak-130. That purchase alone would absorb half of the funds Libya is set to allocate for its Russian arms design, the Interfax news agency said.
Relations between Russia and Libya have warmed in recent years following the latter's bid to shed its pariah status in 2003 when it renounced weapons of mass destruction and took responsibility for a 1988 airliner bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland that killed 270 people.
In 2008, also, during a visit to Tripoli by President Putin, Moscow agreed to cancel billions of dollars of Libyan Soviet-era debt in exchange for big contracts for Russian companies.
It was Putin's first visit to Tripoli since the 1980s.
It remained unclear whether the new, lucrative arms contract was signed during Jaber's Russia visit.
"We expect his visit will not just be of a political nature, but will also allow the signing of contracts on the delivery of arms and military hardware," Vyacheslav Dzirkaln, deputy head of the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, told the RIA-Novosti state news agency ahead of Jaber's visit.
The official, who oversees arms exports, did not elaborate. There was, also, no official confirmation or statement by Russia's powerful state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport.
Local media suggested that details of the contract could be revealed during a news conference on Wednesday.
The arrival of the senior Libyan minister comes days after the Libyan Investment Authority snatched up the Hong Kong initial public offering of UC Rusal, the world's biggest aluminum producer.
In 2008 UC Rusal had signed a memorandum of understanding to create a joint venture to build an "energy and metals complex" in Libya.

Al-Arabiya television quoted on Friday an unnamed source as saying reports that Libyan leader Moammad Qaddafis son, Khamis, was killed are true.
The source added that Khamis Qaddafi was killed in a raid in Bab al-Aziziyah in Tripoli.
Khamis, 27, who runs the feared Khamis Brigade that has been prominent in its role of attacking rebel-held areas, was reportedly killed Saturday night.
According to reports on Algerian TV, a Libyan air force pilot crashed his jet into the Bab al-Aziziyah compound in Tripoli in a kamikaze attack.
Khamis allegedly died of burns in hospital. The Gaddafi regime denied the reports of his death

TRIPOLI, Libya -- Tiny Qatar became the first Arab country to fly combat missions over Libya on Friday after NATO agreed to take command of the no-fly zone part of air operations against Moammar Gadhafi's regime.
French and British jets struck Libyan military targets around a besieged eastern city, as talks in the Ethiopian capital to find a way out of the crisis produced a statement from the Libyan government delegation saying his country was ready to talk with rebels and accept political reform, possibly including elections.
It not immediately unclear what was behind the offer from Libyan negotiator Abdul-Ati al-Obeidi. Rebels, who were not at the talks, say they will not negotiate with Gadhafi.
The Qatari fighter jet flew its first sortie alongside a French jet on Friday and the United Arab Emirates pledged 12 warplanes to the effort to thwart Moammar Gadhafi. The international effort has no other countries from the Arab League, a 22-member group that was among the driving forces behind the U.N. Security Council decision to impose a no-fly zone over Libya.
"Qatar has been a great ally from Day One," said Mustafa Gheriani, spokesman for opposition Benghazi city council. "It's an Arab country to be proud of."
The United States has provided millions of dollars in equipment to many of the league's countries, including Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

In an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, Mr al-Hasidi admitted that he had recruited "around 25" men from the Derna area in eastern Libya to fight against coalition troops in Iraq. Some of them, he said, are "today are on the front lines in Adjabiya".
Mr al-Hasidi insisted his fighters "are patriots and good Muslims, not terrorists," but added that the "members of al-Qaeda are also good Muslims and are fighting against the invader".
His revelations came even as Idriss Deby Itno, Chad's president, said al-Qaeda had managed to pillage military arsenals in the Libyan rebel zone and acquired arms, "including surface-to-air missiles, which were then smuggled into their sanctuaries".
Mr al-Hasidi admitted he had earlier fought against "the foreign invasion" in Afghanistan, before being "captured in 2002 in Peshwar, in Pakistan". He was later handed over to the US, and then held in Libya before being released in 2008.
US and British government sources said Mr al-Hasidi was a member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, or LIFG, which killed dozens of Libyan troops in guerrilla attacks around Derna and Benghazi in 1995 and 1996.
Even though the LIFG is not part of the al-Qaeda organisation, the United States military's West Point academy has said the two share an "increasingly co-operative relationship". In 2007, documents captured by allied forces from the town of Sinjar, showed LIFG emmbers made up the second-largest cohort of foreign fighters in Iraq, after Saudi Arabia.
Earlier this month, al-Qaeda issued a call for supporters to back the Libyan rebellion, which it said would lead to the imposition of "the stage of Islam" in the country.
British Islamists have also backed the rebellion, with the former head of the banned al-Muhajiroun proclaiming that the call for "Islam, the Shariah and jihad from Libya" had "shaken the enemies of Islam and the Muslims more than the tsunami that Allah sent against their friends, the Japanese".

DEN HAAG - De medewerker van het bedrijf Royal Haskoning voor wie de mislukte evacuatie werd ondernomen, wil niet zijn versie van de gebeurtenissen aan de Tweede Kamer komen vertellen. De Kamer had hier om gevraagd, maar de man heeft aangegeven liever niet in de openbaarheid te treden.
Dat heeft Haskoning laten weten aan de ministers Uri Rosenthal (Buitenlandse Zaken) en Hans Hillen (Defensie), die het verzoek tot een, mogelijk vertrouwelijk, gesprek aan het bedrijf hadden overgebracht. Haskoning respecteert de wens van de werknemer en geeft ook aan altijd te proberen het personeel zo lang mogelijk in anonimiteit te laten werken.
De Kamer heeft vrijdag wel een verslag ontvangen dat Haskoning zelf heeft opgesteld. Daarin staat een beschrijving van de pogingen die zijn gedaan om de werknemer te evacueren.

Tornado crew describe raid on Libya
An RAF crewman has given the first account of a raid over Libya in which his Tornado identified and destroyed four tanks belonging to forces loyal to Col Gaddafi.
Wing Commander Andy Turk was the navigator on one of two Tornados which took off late on Thursday night from Gioia del Colle airbase in southern Italy, tasked with finding and destroying heavy battle tanks understood by the Daily Telegraph to be Russian-made T-72s.
A sortie by coalition aircraft had identified armoured vehicles massing near the eastern Libyan town of Ajdabiya, 100 miles south of the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.
"We were tasked to go to the area and fairly quickly found a tank by the side of the main road, away from any major built-up areas," he said.
Infra-red imaging gathered by a targeting pod attached to the Tornado showed that the tank's engine was running, although it was not moving.
"It was stationary but warm, with its barrel pointing towards a town," said Wg Cdr Turk, who is normally based at RAF Marham in Norfolk.

The Tornado fired one of its Brimstone laser-guided missiles, guiding it towards the tank with the targeting pod.
"The missile hit and penetrated the armour. There were secondary explosions which I believe were fuel and ammunition on board the tank.
"Fairly soon after we identified another tank in the local area, threatening the town, and my wingman fired his missile with a direct hit again." The Tornados identified a third tank but initially aborted their attack when they saw civilian vehicles moving in the vicinity.
Once the vehicles were clear they launched another missile and destroyed the tank. They then found a fourth tank and hit that too.
The British crew saw a large group of vehicles arrive on the scene and begin firing into the damaged tanks, and concluded that they were rebel forces. "They then continued their advance unhindered," Wg Cdr Turk said.
"To see the direct effect you've had by clearing away the tanks from the anti-regime forces was very rewarding. We do this in Afghanistan and you get the feeling 'I've done something which has saved someone's life.'" The RAF has 10 Typhoons and eight Tornados at Gioia del Colle, backed up by a large number of ground crew and other support staff.
There was a mood of satisfaction among pilots and navigator following the raid, in which the aircraft encountered no hostile fire.
"They're doing what they trained to do to fly in and blow stuff up," one member of the British contingent told the Daily Telegraph.

The jamming was being caused by large installations capable of simultaneously interfering with several frequencies on the Arabsat and Nilesat satellites that carry the Qatar-based news channels signal, it said. The station has exhaustively covered events in Libya, Bahrain and Yemen, contacting protesters and government backers by telephone and often airing footage of events sent via the Internet.
Earlier this month, Egypts Nilesat cut off Al Jazeeras signal for more than a week after authorities there ordered it to stop operations in Egypt during the unrest that ultimately ended President Hosni Mubaraks 30-year rule.
Launched in 1996, Al Jazeera has more than 400 reporters in over 60 countries, according to its website. It says it can reach 220 million households in more than 100 countries.

Reliable sources have confirmed that young youths that were previously kidnapped from the city of Misrata by the Gaddafi regime have escaped and returned home. The 61 have escaped from the city of Sirt where they had been held captive. The escape would not have been possible without the aid of citizens of Sirt; all the prisoners returned home in good health.

Then they walked me downstairs to the cells.
They removed the blindfold in a neon-lit corridor lined with 20 great iron doors with sliding bolts and white numbers. Each door had two small hatches, at the top and the bottom. Empty cartons of juice, plastic packaging and trash were piled up outside the doors.
I was pushed into cell 11, a windowless box, 2.5 metres x 1.5 metres, painted dark grey and lit by a weak bulb. The room contained a dirty mattress, blanket and soiled pillow. A low wall separated a broken toilet seat covered with a thick brown crust, a tap and a bucket. There was a strong smell of sewage.
It was Wednesday 2 March. The prison would be home for a fortnight.
Day and night in the prison, bolts were pulled, doors slammed and guards, in combat trousers, T-shirts and trainers, shoved shackled prisoners in and out of the cells.
One guard in particular a tall man with rimless spectacles whose civilian clothes implied rank spoke the most. "All the people we are capturing are al-Qaida infiltrators," he said at one point. "Al-Qaida are beheading civilians, burning them and eating their hearts."
Another day, he delivered a paean to Colonel Gaddafi. "We love him," he said, rolling his eyes until they were just two white slits. "We love, love, love him! And we want him. It's up to us Libyans to choose him not the west.
"With him we have survived so many things. So many crises have passed and we will survive this. It's history we have with him. It's 42 years! I have known nothing but him and they want us to turn against him now. He is not just our leader, he is a philosopher and a thinker. He is everything."
Worse than the guards, the fear and the smell were the ravings from a prisoner down the corridor. This man's shouting, made incomprehensible by being delivered through his hands or a blanket, echoed around the jail day and night. Sometimes he would break off, a moment of silence would ensue and he would begin crying and squealing in apparent pain.
When a guard passed by he would ask in a very polite voice: "You are not serving tea or coffee today?" "We are not getting newspapers today?"
Days later I discovered that he, like many of the others, was being regularly interrogated and beaten.
In the early hours of Sunday 6 March a gunbattle began outside the prison. It started with a few bursts of small arms fire, then came the deeper note of anti-aircraft guns, which turned into a continuous long drumming. At one point guns were being fired from somewhere just next to the cells.
The inmates became excited. Were the rebels storming into the prison? Had the uprising reached Tripoli? Were we being saved? The raving man gave a long, ululating victory cry while the prisoner in cell 12 continuously repeated "O Lord" like a mantra.
The sounds of shooting rose and fell for more than half an hour before fizzling away and finally stopping when two helicopters came circling overhead.
The officer with the rimless glasses came through the corridor later, fuming with anger. He shoved breakfast through the door hatch. "Those filthy Europeans, we will crush them with the tips of our shoes," he said. "If those rebel dogs come here to attack we will all die together. The sons of Gaddafi will never run. A man lives once and dies once, so better die fighting."
On the evening after the battle the cells began to fill up. There was a man from Zwara, another from Zawiya, and a chubby grey-haired man named Richard who spoke English with an American accent. By Monday some cells had three inmates. "Why am I kept here?" I overheard one man say. "I have handed myself in after the amnesty."
"Sure," laughed a guard. "We will take you to a five-star hotel very soon."
I was moved to a bigger cell upstairs. I could still hear the doors slamming and the man shouting and the new cell was also windowless, but it was whitewashed and lit by neon night and day.
Later I heard the first of the voices coming through the wall. The cell was next to two interrogation rooms, where men were brought throughout the day. Each interrogation began and ended with the clinking sound of a man in shackles walking to or from the room. The madman was brought for interrogation at least twice.
I heard snatches of shouted questions or accusations from the interrogators "Qaida", "attack Libya", "Muammar", "who are they?" punctuated with smacks and thuds, like someone throwing sacks of rice at a wall, and the sound of prisoners pleading, screaming and weeping.
One interrogation on Wednesday evening went as follows:
"Stand up!"
Smack came the sound. Smack. Smack.
"I said stand up!"
Smack. Smack.
This cycle was repeated five times.
Somewhere down the hall a TV blasted pro-Gaddafi marching songs.
On Thursday 10 March I was taken out of the big cell and put in cell 18 in the downstairs corridor. This was also dark, tiny and filthy, but this time I was to share with another prisoner.
He was sitting on a torn mattress, his back resting against the wall and his legs covered with a dirty yellow and red blanket. His hair was slicked back and a few days of white stubble sprouted from his chin. "Bangladesh," he said, pointing at himself. He was shivering in a thin shirt and after few minutes of silence he added, in Arabic: "Cold. All clothes with them."
He told his story in broken sentences. He had lived in Dhaka with his wife and three children. Some years ago he had gone to "a big manager in big glass building with a big office" and paid money to get a visa to Saudi Arabia to work in construction. He had been promised a good salary, but the visa never came.

Photographer Reflects on 'Epic' Libya Battles, Revolution in the Arab World

As a member of an Associated Press team in 2005, he shared a Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography for coverage of the war in Iraq and he's done extended stints in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, South Africa, Mexico and Nicaragua and elsewhere in the last 20 years.
Moore, who now works for Getty Images, also won a host of international awards in 2008 for his exclusive photos of the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Yet despite his relative comfort with being on the frontlines, Moore told the NewsHour from his hotel room in Cairo that his latest assignment -a six-week trip that took him to the uprisings in Egypt, Bahrain and Libya - might have been his most dangerous. Moore recorded the interview for us after sneaking out of Benghazi, Libya en route back to his home in Denver.
"I've covered a lot of conflict over the years," More said, "but I'd say my days of combat coverage here in Libya were the most heavy of all.
"The battle scenes were absolutely epic."
Moore said that he had been traveling with New York Times photographers Tyler Hicks and Lynsey Addario for two of the three weeks he was in Libya.
"For safety I traveled with other journalists," Moore said. "And we'd convoy each day to the frontlines."
The New York Times announced Wednesday that Hicks and Addario, along with their Beirut Bureau Chief Anthony Shadid and videographer Stephen Farrell, had gone missing while reporting from the eastern city of Ajdabiya.
Libya has become an increasingly dangerous place for reporters to work, as some rebel strongholds have recently fallen to forces loyal to Col. Moammar Gadhafi.
The BBC reported that three of its journalists had been detained and beaten with rifles by Gadhafi's security forces last week. Also, a cameraman for Al Jazeera was recently killed near Benghazi.
Moore, who left Libya earlier this week without incident, said that he was nervously waiting to hear word on his colleagues' whereabouts.
Editor's note: The New York Times said Friday that the journalists, who are being held by the Libyan government, were expected to be released.

"They swore at me and they filmed me. I was alone. There was whiskey. I was tied up," she said, weeping and stretching out her arms to show scars.
Her face was heavily bruised and her upper right thigh had blood on it. "They peed on me. They violated my honour," said Obaid.
Obaidi, wearing a loose black coat and slippers, said she had been raped by 15 men and held for two days at the checkpoint.
Her story could not be independently verified. It was unclear whether she had escaped or had been released.
Tripoli is Gaddafi's biggest stronghold, full of loyal militiamen who crack down on any form of dissent as Gaddafi's troops battle rebel forces in other parts of the country.

A son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi toured US ports and military facilities just weeks before he helped lead deadly attacks on rebels protesting his father's authoritarian regime.

State department officials denied any role in planning, advising or paying for the trip.
"We did greet him at the airport. That is standard courtesy for the son of the leader of a country," said Mark Toner, state department spokesman. Mr Toner said the government was aware of Gaddafi's itinerary, but "did not sign off on it."
AECOM was not paid to arrange the trip, and did not pay for related expenses, Mr Gennaro said. He said the trip was arranged at the request of a Libyan, whom he declined to name.
Mr Gennaro was one of the AECOM executives who met with Gaddafi during the trip, to educate him on American corporate practices.
He said Gaddafi was "very, very interested in the planning, design, how do you advance large infrastructure projects."
"That was the nature and the tenor of this internship," he said.
Gaddafi, Moammar Gaddafi's youngest son, was pursuing an MBA at the IE Business School, in Madrid, Spain, until earlier this month. The school expelled him because of his role in attacks on Libyan protesters.
Khamis Gadhafi led the Khamis Brigade, one of several professional military units that are loyal to leader Muammar Gaddafi.
US diplomats in leaked memos have called it "the most well-trained and well-equipped force in the Libyan military."

Libyan rebels regain key city after airstrikes

AJDABIYA, Libya -- Libyan rebels regained control of the eastern gateway city of Ajdabiya on Saturday after international airstrikes crippled Moammar Gadhafi's forces, in the first major turnaround for an uprising that a week ago appeared on the verge of defeat. In a western city the opposition lost to Gadhafi, a resident said security agents had lists of rebel sympathizers and were dragging them from their homes.
Drivers honked in celebration and flew the tricolor rebel flag. Others in the city fired their guns into the air and danced on burned-out tanks that littered the road. Inside a building that had served as makeshift barracks for pro-Gadhafi forces, hastily discarded uniforms were piled on the floor.
"Without the planes we couldn't have done this. Gadhafi's weapons are at a different level than ours," said Ahmed Faraj, 38, a rebel fighter from Ajdabiya. "With the help of the planes we are going to push onward to Tripoli, God willing."
Ajdabiya's sudden fall to Gadhafi's troops spurred the swift U.N. resolution authorizing international action in Libya, and its return to rebel hands on Saturday came after a week of airstrikes and missiles against the Libyan leader's military.
Saif Sadawi, a 20-year-old rebel fighter with an RPG in his hands, said the city's eastern gate fell late Friday and the western gate fell at dawn Saturday after airstrikes on both locations.
"All of Ajdabiya is free," he said.

In the past hour allied war planes have hit Gaddafi targets in the opposition-held town of Misurata. Pro-democracy fighters now say they have moved past Brega further to the west. And that they are heading towards Ras Lanuf - another oil-rich town.
Al Jazeera's James Bays says celebrations by the rebels in Ajdabiya, where he is reporting from, are continuing after the town was retaken by the rebels. Gunfire could he heard from background as he spokes and referred to it as "fresh celebrations".
But he added that it is unclear whether the rebels' victory was planned.
The opposition fighters have come along the main road, hit the roadblock of Gaddafi's forces and that was a stalemate ... It was only when those airstrikes [of coalition forces] took place that the situation changed.
It [town] was recaptured because of what came from the skies. It was here- at the west gate in Ajdabiya - that Gaddafi forces made their last stand ... There was bombardment from international jets; international coalition ... People here are celebrating. The people are firing in celebration rather than anger. Most people had fled Ajdabiya during the fighting, but some had hidden in their homes but now they [are] joining the celebrations.

Libyan Rebels Push West To Capture Brega
Libya's rebels have captured the towns of Brega and Ajdabiyah from forces loyal to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi after advancing about 80 miles in just 24 hours.
The rebels were delighted, firing into the air and celebrating on the burnt-out tanks of Gaddafi's forces.
Just 1.5 miles outside Brega they were mustering to try and make another attack further south.
On the road down from Ajdabiyah to Brega were trailers fill of ammunition, tanks, Stalin's Organs (multiple rocket launchers) and other equipment destroyed by coalition airstrikes.
Aircraft were overhead during the day but there were no attacks because mcuh of Gaddafi's hardware appears to have been destroyed and his troops had retreated.
Brega, from where a great deal of the oil and natural gas exported by Libya is pumped to Italy and elsewhere, and Ajdabiyah had both been held by the rebels in the early days of the uprising but were lost to Gaddafi's better-armed forces.
But it appears that a couple of days of airstrikes by French and British warplanes, including Tornados, have crushed the resistance of Gaddafi's forces.

De Libische opstandelingen hebben de oliestad Brega bereikt. Dat zei woordvoerder van de opstandelingen aan het einde van de middag tegen persbureau Reuters.
Volgens de woordvoerder, kolonel Ahmed Bani, zijn de opstandelingen vanmiddag opgerukt tot de randen van Brega ( kaart). Nieuwe aanvallen van Gaddafis troepen op Misrata
De opstandelingen mogen dan in het oosten aan een opmars bezig zijn, in het westen van Libi hebben ze het nog altijd heel moeilijk. Troepen van Gaddafi hebben volgens de opstandelingen aan het einde van de middag nieuwe aanvallen uitgevoerd op Misrata ( kaart ). Zowel van de oostkant als van de westkant zouden Gaddafis troepen hevig op de stad hebben geschoten. Ook zouden tanks en nieuwe troepen in aantocht zijn.
De nieuwe aanvallen volgen nadat eerder vanmiddag bekend werd dat luchtaanvallen van de coalitie Misrata tijdelijk ontzet hadden. Obama zei in zijn wekelijkse videoboodschap aan het Amerikaanse volk dat Gaddafis troepen in steeds meer Libische steden worden teruggedrongen en dat de missie van de coalitie succesvol is.

It was just another breakfast time at Tripoli's smart Rixos Al Nasr hotel, sleepy foreign journalists helping themselves to cereals, rolls and terrible coffee in the restaurant, looking out over a neat garden unusual in the dour capital city.
But the Groundhog Day conversations – more overnight coalition air strikes against Muammar Gaddafi's forces, rebel advances in the east, how to escape the minders – were suddenly interrupted when a distraught woman burst in to describe how she had been repeatedly raped by government militiamen.
Iman al-Obeidi was quickly manhandled and arrested by security officials – an extraordinary spectacle for the journalists staying in the luxurious hotel and makeshift media centre, hemmed in by severe restrictions on their movements and fed barely credible information.
The scene – filmed by several of those present – unfolded when Obeidi entered the Ocaliptus dining room and lifted up her abaya (dress) to show a slash and bruises on her right leg. "Look what Gaddafi's men have done to me," she screamed. "Look what they did, they violated my honour."
Distraught and weeping, she was surrounded by reporters and cameramen. Libyan minders pushed and lashed out at the journalists, one of them drawing a gun, another smashing a CNN camera. Two waitresses grabbed knives and threatened Obeidi, calling her "a traitor to Gaddafi".
Obeidi said she had been arrested at a checkpoint in the capital because she is from Benghazi, stronghold of the anti-Gaddafi rebellion in the east. "They swore at me and they filmed me. I was alone. There was whisky. I was tied up. They peed on me." She said she had been raped by 15 men and held for two days.
Charles Clover of the Financial Times, who tried to protect her, was pushed, thrown to the floor and kicked, and Channel 4 correspondent Jonathan Miller was punched.
Obeidi was frogmarched, struggling, into the lobby and driven away, shouting: "They say they are taking me to hospital but they are taking me to jail." Minders again tried to stop journalists taking pictures. It was impossible to verify her account. Musa Ibrahim, a government spokesman, said he had been told Obeidi, apparently in her 30s, was drunk and suffered from "mental problems".
The incident made a powerful impression on journalists who have heard of, and occasionally seen, brutality but are subject to stringent controls to prevent them reporting independently and have a frustrating sense of being manipulated for crude propaganda purposes by the authorities.
"There was a desperate sense of our failure to prevent the thugs taking her away," C4's Miller said afterwards. "There was nothing more that we could have done as we were overtly threatened by considerable physical force."
An American TV cameraman said: "I think she probably was raped, otherwise I can't see her having the courage to put herself at such risk to let us know what the regime is doing. We see the fear in people all the time. But this is the most blatant example of the vicious way the regime treats the Libyan people."
It is clear from snatched conversations and anecdotal evidence that hundreds of Libyans have been detained in Tripoli, Zawiya and elsewhere since the uprising began five weeks ago, with many families still unaware of their whereabouts.
Libya's media strategy is to highlight the violent nature of the rebellion, insisting it is inspired by al-Qaida, and to emphasise that coalition air attacks – mandated by the UN to protect civilians – are causing civilian casualties. But foreign media have not been allowed to visit hospitals and have been escorted to only two sites hit in the last week.
The first was a naval base in central Tripoli, where there were no casualties. The second was a farm on the outskirts of nearby Tajura, damaged by fragments of what one expert said was a US-made Harm anti-radar missile, and where one person was slightly injured.
Visible military targets – such as a mobile radar station on the adjacent coastal road – appear to have been destroyed.
Journalists have also been taken to see two mass funerals of purported victims of the attacks, where large crowds chant pro-Gaddafi slogans and slogans attacking what Libyans call the "colonialist-crusader aggression".
John Simpson, the BBC's foreign affairs editor, was warned by Libyan officials after questioning in a broadcast whether coffins seen at a funeral on Thursday contained the bodies of civilian victims. It is thought 18 air cadets were killed in an air strike on a Tajura military installation, the number corresponding to charred bodies shown to photographers in a hospital mortuary.
But no distinction has been made between civilian and military casualties. The government said on Thursday that "nearly 100" civilians had been killed. No names of the dead or injured have been published. The US and Britain say there are no confirmed civilian casualties.
"I am on a short leash because they really objected to my questioning whether the coffins we saw contained civilians," Simpson said. "All I said was that it was impossible to verify, but they took that as a great insult."
Other journalists have received anonymous threats. "I have read your stories and the penalty for carelessness is death," one American correspondent was warned by email.
The Rixos is in a secluded compound 20 minutes from the centre of Tripoli. Journalists who have managed to leave it or another hotel without minders are detained by police or turned back at roadblocks. Taxi drivers face arrest if caught picking up journalists.
Libyan officials insist journalists comply with the rules for their own safety but are evidently frustrated that their message is not getting across. "This is an extremely tense time," said Ibrahim. "Our soldiers are being killed. People in Libya are very angry, very bitter. They know the news from Ajdabiya. They know the coalition forces are not protecting civilians. They know the rebels came from Benghazi to Ajdabiya and that we are withdrawing. No one is investigating this."
