(Reuters) - Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's most prominent son, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, gave Reuters a wide-ranging interview on Thursday.

Below are key quotes from the interview:

RELATIONS WITH THE WEST

"The French, the Europeans, they should talk to the Libyan people. ... If they want to support the militia, do it. But I tell you: you are going to lose. We will win. And we are not afraid of the American fleet, NATO, France, Europe. This is our country. We are here, we will die here."

"I still believe that President Obama is a wise man and he will (make) the right decision."

"We will never ever give up. We will never ever surrender. This is our country. We fight here in Libya. The Libyan people, we will never ever welcome NATO, we will never ever welcome Americans here. Libya is not a piece of cake. We are not a Mickey Mouse."

"Time is out now. It's time for action. ... We gave them (rebels) two weeks (for negotiations).

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN LIBYA NOW?

"It's time for liberation. It's time for action. We are moving now. Everybody is very excited."

"In a few days ... you will see a surprise, you will see people in the east ... defeating the militia. ... They don't represent anybody. They are self-appointed people. ... It's a joke, it's a Mickey Mouse council. Nobody is with them."

"But the West still lives in this fantasy. You will see a big surprise. Nobody welcomes NATO, the Americans to occupy Libya. ... Now it's too late for them. We are so united, we are so strong. And Libya will be free and peaceful soon."

"The army is very patient. They gave them (rebels) two weeks ... trying to reach a peaceful end. Two weeks. Even with terrorists, they were still patient."

ON DEMOCRACY AND REFORM

"And now ... we are more convinced and more determined to go toward democracy and freedom. I said this 10 years ago, myself, 2 years ago, last year, today and tomorrow. We have one direction. Democracy and freedom."

"The target is the constitution so everything is legalized. My father said in public, that I don't want to be the president of all of the country. We want to have a new structure, a new system, new parliament, new government, we have a draft ready. We want to have a modern democracy."

ON DUTCH MARINES

"Today we are going to hand over the Dutch soldiers to the Maltese and Greeks. We told them, don't come back again without our permission. We captured the first NATO soldiers, we are sending them back home. But we are still keeping their helicopter."

IS LIBYA IN A STATE OF CIVIL WAR?

"To be very precise, to be very frank, the war now is between the whole Libyan nation against terrorists and armed militia. Even the people in the east, we are receiving thousands of calls, people are saying, come here, hurry up and liberate us from armed militia."

"People are so afraid. They cannot open shops, kids can't go to school, universities shut down, people cannot go and get their money and salaries ... Everything is frozen now. Why? Because of the armed militia ... It's chaos, it's a mess ... They are waiting for us to get rid of the militia."

IS YOUR FATHER ANGRY?

"Everybody is angry."

WHO ARE THE REBELS?

"They are just gangsters. They took the arms of the army and they are fighting everybody."

"They are armed militia, like in Somalia. Young people take drugs, drunk, happy with arms and excitement and people encouraging them. So they are fighting ... Not everybody is al Qaeda. The majority is not al Qaeda. The majority is just armed militia, gangsters. ... We will not be

23:19 Here is the full text of the letter by David Cameron and Nicolas Sarkozy, via The Guardian:

Since the Libyan people have started to rise against Muammar Gaddafis brutal regime, the world is witnessing on a daily basis an unacceptable continuation of violence and repression in Libya. Ignoring UN Security Council resolution 1970 demands as well as calls from regional organisations and the whole international community, Gaddafis regime continues to attack his own people including with aircraft and helicopters. It is clear to us that the regime has lost any legitimacy it may have once had.

This deliberate use of military force against civilians is utterly unacceptable. As warned by the Security Council, these acts may amount to crimes against humanity. All those involved in deciding, planning or executing such actions must know that they will be held accountable.

France and the UK are committed to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya. We support the Libyan peoples desire to choose their own leadership and to decide their own political system. We welcome the formation of an Interim Transitional National Council based in Benghazi and we are engaging with the Council and its members to develop a cooperative dialogue.

When the Libyan people win their fundamental rights, we should be ready to support them with the necessary assistance and cooperation, in order to promote stability and development in Libya, for the benefit of all Libyans.

Todays priority is to cope with the political and security situation.

To that end, we propose to our European partners, our Allies, and our Arab and African friends to undertake the following steps:

1. To stop further suffering of the Libyan people, Muammar Gaddafi and his clique should leave.

2. We support the efforts of the Libyan Interim Transitional National Council to prepare for a representative and accountable government. We should send the clear political signal that we consider the Council to be valid political interlocutors, and an important voice for the Libyan people in this phase.

3. We condemn, and call for an immediate halt to, the use of force against civilians by the Gaddafi regime. We support continued planning to be ready to provide support for all possible contingencies as the situation evolves on the basis of demonstrable need, a clear legal basis and firm regional support. This could include a no-fly zone or other options against air attacks, working with Allies and partners, especially those in the region. We are working together on elements of an appropriate UNSCR.

4. We call upon the UN to evaluate and closely monitor the humanitarian situation in Libya, and to make proposals to ensure full access for humanitarian organisations and assistance to displaced people. We stand ready to help in this endeavour.

5. We support the investigation announced by the International Criminal Court Prosecutor, and the message this sends that the regime will be held to account for its actions.

6. We call on all countries to implement fully the arms embargo, including banning the provision of armed mercenary personnel and to take measures to discourage such recruitments, or departure of planes or convoys to that end, and we stand ready to co-operate with them in this regard.

7. Regarding displaced persons outside Libya, should the situation deteriorate, we should all be ready to act through further financial and material assistance, including military assets, in cooperation with international organisations and countries concerned.

t's been a long day for the Libyan rebels who took up arms against Gaddafi's 42-year rule. This photo shows two fighters catching some rest after the bulk of the day's fighting outside Ras Lanuf. The city has been taken by Gaddafi forces, but sources in the town say opposition forces are still in control of the oil facility there.

From the perspective of a Middle Eastern tyrant, the obvious lesson of Egypt was: don't give in. Keep the army on your side, fight like hell, and eventually you'll come out on top. That's certainly the lesson Muammar Qaddafi learned:

In Libya, 7 journalists unaccounted for, 3 others abused

New York, March 10, 2011--At least seven journalists covering the conflict in Libya are unaccounted for, according to research by the Committee to Protect Journalists, which expressed deep concern today about their well-being. The most recent to go missing is Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, a correspondent for London's Guardian newspaper, whose disappearance was reported today.

The whereabouts of at least seven local journalists remained unclear today, CPJ research shows. Atef al-Atrash, a contributor to local news outlets, disappeared shortly after speaking on air on Al-Jazeera from Benghazi. Mohamed al-Sahim, a blogger and critical political writer; Mohamed al-Amin, a cartoonist; and Idris al-Mismar, a writer and former editor-in-chief of Arajin, a monthly culture magazine, have also been reported missing. Two Tripoli-based journalists--Salma al-Shaab, head of the Libyan Journalists Syndicate, and Suad al-Turabouls, a correspondent for the pro-government Al-Jamahiriya--were detained last month but are now unaccounted for.
