quote:Deflation – A fall in the general price of goods and services. This problem, seen during the Great Depression, hurts economic growth as consumers wait for prices to fall. By contrast, "disinflation" is a benign reduction in the inflation rate.
Inflation – A rise in the general price of goods and services. When out of control, it constrains saving and investment in the economy. The rate of inflation is most often measured by changes in the Labor Department's consumer price index.
Recession – A sharp contraction in economic activity and employment. A common but informal measure is two consecutive quarters with a decline of national output. A recession is officially declared by a committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Boston – this occurs after the fact when final data have arrived and been analyzed.
Stagflation – A combination of stagnation (manifested as significant unemployment and slow or negative economic growth) and entrenched inflation – a phenomenon that characterized the 1970s in America.

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is proposing to pay close to £1 billion in bonuses to its staff, just months after it was rescued by a £20 billion taxpayer bail-out, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal.

Marc Faber, Editor & Publisher of The Gloom, Boom & Doom, said he sees a muted rally in the near tem but added that the economic news would continue to be weak.
Faber said emerging markets (EMs) would rally another 20% from hereon. "Commodity markets and EMs still look oversold to me," he said.
Here is a verbatim transcript of the exclusive interview with Marc Faber on CNBC-TV18. Also watch the accompanying video.
Q: How crucial are this stimulus package that everyone is talking about and how durable an equity rally can it spark off across the world in your eyes?
A: Basically globally many of the banks are pumping money into the system and we may have more of a rally in the near future. We have rallied quite considerably from the lows on November 21, so from here, the rally would be more muted.
Q: Another 10-15% more or even less than that?
A: Thats easily possible and I think emerging markets could rally somewhat more about 20%. The economic news will stay poor and corporate profit in my opinion will not recover for quite sometime and I just dont see any catalyst for global economy to grow again rapidly in the near future.
Q: What do you think would be the catalyst for this rally that we are talking about, is it this package that all markets are watching or is it just that the markets have remained ranged for a very long period of time?
A: They fell very hard in November and the market became grossly oversold worldwide especially emerging markets and commodity markets, industrial commodities and I am not talking of gold which has held up well, but the commodity markets and the emerging markets are still very oversold. So as liquidity comes back into the system and we have some evidence that some liquidity aspects have improved like corporate bonds have rallied very significantly and corporate bond prices have diminished this could fuel a further rally.
Q: Some of the base metals have started seeing some rally in these past few weeks, is that a space you would want to look at even in terms of the pullback and riding that?
A: Yes we have had some rebound in industrial commodities, Baltic Dry Index and also in mining related shares, for example some stocks were down to USD 21 but now they are back up to USD 40. So we have some very strong rebounds in the resource space and thats why I am a little bit more cautious at the present time because the gravity of the rebound is already out of the market.
Q: China has been the best performer in the emerging markets in this part of the world in 2009 so far but India has been relatively okay, how you see these two markets doing relative to the rest of the basket and relative to each other in 2009?
A: 2009 is a long time essentially another ten months and many things can happen, for that I said the markets could rebound further in the near future and then at some stage, I guess when economic news would not improve very much, we are likely to retest the lows.
The once-mighty UBS today confirmed investors' worst fears by declaring an £11.3bn loss for 2008 and announcing it would axe around a further 2,000 jobs at its shrunken investment bank.
The bank made Swiss corporate history by losing a record 19.7bn Swiss francs after running up a further net loss of Sfr8.1bn in the final quarter of last year, including Sfr3.7bn in exposures to toxic assets. It has scrapped the dividend. Confirming it had cut bonuses by 85%, UBS said it planned to reduce staff at the investment bank to 15,000 by the end of this year, after shedding more than 1,700 in the last three months of 2008 alone.
This means almost 2,200 staff will leave as the investment banking arm, which lost Sfr7.5bn pre-tax in the final quarter, is cut back even further. It has shed 5,500 jobs in the last 15 months and Jerker Johansson, its head, indicated more could go. But it has taken on 400 client advisers in the US.
Marcel Rohner, chief executive, told journalists the bank had cut bonuses to the "bare minimum". They declined from Sfr7.9bn to Sfr1.16bn, with the bulk made up of contractual payments. UBS has radically altered its remuneration model, with any bonuses paid deferred for up to four years – and clawed back if losses are incurred.
Rohner said: "The environment will remain very difficult and volatile as the real economy has not seen the worst yet."
UBS is refocusing its activities on Swiss banking and international wealth management, announcing a new divisional structure under a new team of executives that emphasises a partial retreat to its home base.
