12.08pm: Al-Jazeera suggest that at least one of the flights might taking a Libyan delegation to negotiate with the Arab League, which is based in Cairo. A meeting of the Arab League is due to take place on Saturday but the league has ruled out any Libyan participation.

Europa doet veel te weinig om kolonel Kadhafi aan te pakken. Dat vindt een groot deel van het Europees Parlement. EU-buitenlandco�rdinator Catherine Ashton komt niet veel verder dan het veroordelen van het geweld.

14.11 uur:
De Libische staats-tv toont gesprekken met wat de zender aankondigt als twee gewonde soldaten van de Gaddafi-troepen in een niet nader benoemd ziekenhuis. Ze zeggen de schade berokkent aan de staat door de vijanden van Libi� te betreuren. Een van de soldaten zegt dat buitenlanders de anti-regimestrijders versterken. Hij herhaalde de mening die Gaddafi vanochtend ook verkondigde in zijn speech (zie 10.01) dat het Algerijnen, Egyptenaren en Tunesi�rs zijn die geleid worden door Al Qaida.

14.25 uur: Flinke rookontwikkeling bij olieterminal
Drie dikke rookpluimen stijgen op bij Es Sider, een olieterminal in het oosten van Libi�. Troepen van Moammar Gaddafi lieten vandaag een hevig bombardement los op de opstandelingen die zich daar ophouden. De Reuters-correspondent ter plaatse zegt dat het nog onduidelijk is of de terminal zelf geraakt is. Maar een van de rookpluimen is de grootste die hij tot nu zag sinds de opstand begon.

12.41pm: A fighter jet has been circling over Ras Lanuf but there have been no major clashes so far, reports Reuters. It says opposition forces have been staging periodic hit-and-run attacks on dug-in troops loyal to Gaddafi in the east of the country and resupplied their own frontline with guns and ammunition.

A warplane circled a rebel checkpoint at the main gate to the rebel-held oil town of Ras Lanuf which has sustained repeated air strikes in the past days. There were six anti-aircraft guns, two mortar launchers and boxes of ammunition at the gate waiting to go forward. One fighter was carefully assembling home-made bombs with small fuses and tins of TNT explosive.

"We're in a defensive position right now because of the heavy artillery ahead. We moved forward another five km (three miles)," rebel Colonel Masoud Mohammed.
The threat of heavy artillery and the defensive position was repeated by Colonel Bashir Abdul Qadr.

On Wednesday, there was one rebel army truck mounted with a multiple rocket launcher near the front, which lies along a barren stretch of desert and scrub roughly 550 km (340 miles) east of Tripoli between the towns of Bin Jawad and Ras Lanuf.
A Reuters correspondent also saw an armoured personnel carrier travelling away from the front. Another two sources, unarmed rebel volunteers, said there had been minor skirmishes at the front line at dawn, but no major military confrontations.

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has warned that the imposition of a no-fly zone in Libyan airspace will be met with armed resistance and taken as proof that western powers are trying to steal his country's oil.

His defiant remarks came as pro-Gaddafi forces continued their assault on the city of Zawiyah and the country's rebel leadership pleaded for the international community to close down Libyan airspace.

Britain and the US have discussed the creation of an internationally backed no-fly zone as a contingency plan in case Gaddafi refuses to step down in response to the popular uprising that erupted last month.

In an interview broadcast on Wednesday by Turkey's state-run TRT news channel, Gaddafi said: "If they take such a decision it will be useful for Libya, because the Libyan people will see the truth, that what they want is to take control of Libya and to steal their oil.

"They want to take your petrol," he said. "This is what America, this is what the French, those colonialists, want." But he warned: "The Libyan people will take up arms against them."

Barack Obama and David Cameron have agreed "to press forward with planning, including at Nato, on the full spectrum of possible responses, including surveillance, humanitarian assistance, enforcement of the arms embargo, and a no-fly zone".

The US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, has made it clear that Washington believes any decision to impose a no-fly zone is a matter for the UN and should not be a US-led initiative.

Opponents of Gaddafi on the front line between the rebel-controlled east and the regime's forces in the west have become increasingly frustrated at the international community's failure to act. Rebels constantly fire machine guns into the air to try to fend off attacking warplanes.

"They had a no-fly zone in Iraq," a rebel volunteer, Naji Saleh, told Reuters near the oil town of Ras Lanuf. "Why is Gaddafi their darling and Saddam Hussein was not?".

The rebel leadership in the eastern city of Benghazi said their representatives were in touch with foreign capitals about the imposition of a no-fly zone.

"We are concentrating our diplomatic efforts and working hard. But as always, they [foreign powers] are reluctant. One day we think they will take action soon," said Iman Bugaigis, a spokesman for the rebel February 17 coalition.

An opposition group fighting Gaddafi's regime has called for a no-fly zone over Libya even without the UN's blessing, but has ruled out the presence of foreign troops on Libyan soil.

Speaking at the European parliament, an official with the umbrella group for eastern rebels said that if it came to a choice between preventing people being slaughtered or accepting political disagreement within the UN security council, the decision was easy.

Mahmoud Jebril said the only condition would be to enforce the zone from outside Libya.

EU parliament groups meeting in Strasbourg are preparing to call on member states to recognise Jebril's newly created interim governing council in Benghazi.

Gaddafi has also accused the UN security council of bypassing its own processes to act against Libya and repeated his claims that the revolt had been inspired by foreign al-Qaida militants who have freed prisoners and paid young men to fight for them.

He has accused western governments and media of falling for al-Qaida propaganda that blamed government forces for unleashing violence on the Libyan people.

In an interview with France's LCI television, Gaddafi said: "I'd have to be mad to shoot at peaceful demonstrators. I'd never have done that. I'd never have allowed anyone to be shot."

He also warned the international community that the collapse of Libya would bring an end to security in the region, telling TRT: "The world will change its attitude towards Libya because Libyan stability means the security of the Mediterranean sea.

"It will be a huge disaster if al-Qaida takes over Libya. Al-Qaida would flood Europe with immigrants. We are the ones who prevent al-Qaida from taking over control. They would drag the whole region into chaos … Al-Qaida would take over north Africa."

Meanwhile, Libyan forces loyal to Gaddafi have closed in on rebels in the western city of Zawiyah, surrounding them with tanks and snipers in the main square, according to a resident and a rebel fighter.

"We can see the tanks. The tanks are everywhere," Ibrahim told Reuters by phone from inside Zawiyah, the closest rebel city to the capital, Tripoli.

A resident added: "They have surrounded the square with snipers and tanks. The situation is not so good. It's very scary. There are a lot of snipers."

Ibrahim said forces loyal to Gaddafi were in control of the main road and the suburbs. Although rebel forces still controlled the square, pro-Gaddafi fighters were about 1,500 metres away.

Ibrahim said army snipers were on top of most of the buildings, shooting at anyone who dared to venture from their homes.

"There are many dead people and they can't even bury them," he said. "Zawiyah is deserted. There's nobody on the streets. No animals, not even birds in the sky."

A government spokesman said that while troops were mostly in control of Zawiyah, there was still a small pocket of 30-40 "desperate" resistance fighters.

Foreign reporters have been prevented from entering Zawiyah, 30 miles west of Tripoli, and other cities near the capital without an official escort.

Human rights activists estimate more than 1,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in mid-February.

3.46pm: Libyan government emissaries have flown to Brussels to talk to European and NATO officials ahead of the organisations meetings on Thursday and Friday, the Italian foreign minister, Franco Frattini, said today. It seems that Gaddafi is on a diplomatic offensive but what his representatives are putting on the table, if anything, is unclear. From Reuters:

"Two aircraft of the Libyan regime appear to have left Libya for Brussels with the intention of enabling emissaries of Gaddafi to meet representatives taking part in the meetings of the EU and NATO tomorrow and the next day," Frattini said.

He noted that the visits to Cairo and Brussels suggested that the situation was very fluid and he cautioned against taking any action which might be premature. "I don't know what will be said in Cairo, I don't know who will meet whom in Brussels but these movements are a fact that we have to take account of," he said.

Earlier, a Maltese official said Libyan emissaries had arrived on the Mediterranean island on Wednesday for talks with Maltese officials, and then flown to Portugal. There was no immediate confirmation from Lisbon but a source in Brussels said the plane was carrying a moderate member of Gaddafi's government to meet Luis Amado, the Portuguese foreign minister.

I'm just back from an occupation of Saif Gadaffi's house in Hampstead, which has been occupied by a group calling themselves Topple the Tyrants.

It's a redbrick house in a small close, rather disappointing for a tyrant dynasty but apparently it's worth �10m.

There aren't too many of the group, it's not clear exactly how many there are, and they've put up a few banners on the roof. We had a photographer there so there will be photos soon.

Kadhafi zendt gezanten naar Europa

Een vliegtuig van de Libische leider Kadhafi is vertrokken naar Ca�ro. Er zou een gezant in zitten die een boodschap van Kadhafi moet overbrengen. Verder zijn er berichten dat er toestellen van Kadhafi met gezanten onderweg zijn naar Europese hoofdsteden, waaronder Brussel. Daar is vrijdag een EU-top over Libi�.

Kadafi heeft een beloning van bijna een half miljoen dollar gezet op het hoofd van oppositieleider Jalil, de leider van de Nationale Libische Raad.

Die raad stelde gisteren een ultimatum aan Kadhafi. Als hij binnen 72 uur vertrok zou hij niet strafrechtelijk worden vervolgd.

At one point during their captivity the men had shots fired past their heads as they were led into a barracks.

One of the men was attacked repeatedly with fists, boots, rifle butts, a stick and piece of pipe. He also described trying to help other victims of torture whom they saw, some of whom had had their ribs broken during beatings.

The informed sources of the International Criminal Court, on Wednesday night, reported on the continuation of massacre of Libyan people by Muammar Gaddafi's military forces, putting the death toll in recent days at 10,000 people.



According to Al-Alam Network website, citing a member of the International Criminal Court, only in the city of Benghazi at least 2,000 people have been martyred.

Gaddafi said on Tuesday night that in case of continuation of protests, his regime will intensely suppress the Libyan people.

A political activist in Libya, Hassan Abul-Qasem, in an interview with Al-Alam Network, referred to Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi's televised speech, in which the Libyan dictator threatened the demonstrators, and warned against the possibility of the horrific massacre of people by the Libyan repressive regime.

He called on Libyan armed forces to join people and to use their weapons for defending people against the Libyan regime's mercenaries.

The main city of Benghazi and several other Libyan cities have been conquered by the revolutionary forces, and based on reports; Gaddafi only dominates a small district of Tripoli, which is highly guarded by the military forces.
