August 29, 2003 - With all the videogames that come out each and every month, it can be quite a difficult task to decide which title to spend your hard-earned money on. Granted you could go by our review scores alone and weed through the long list of games in search of something that scored high or low, but what if you had somewhere else to turn to?
Rather than wait until the end of the year like we normally do, your incredibly masculine friends at IGN.com have decided to employ a monthly tribute to the weeks that were. We're resolved to illustrate to our readers what we thought was the very best game for each system over the past month, and tell you exactly the reason why. While some of us often chime in with our comments at the end of reviews, for the most part, the reviews on IGN are primarily written by one editor; in this feature we get all of the editors on a particular channel to vote for our Game of the Month. What better way to represent your channel than to speak your mind all at once?
How does it work? Simple. Any game released in the past month is eligible for the award and is taken through a battery of tests by every editor on that particular channel. After we've finished evaluating each game that comes down the pipeline, we put our heads together and decide on a single "best of" winner that's worthy of the title "IGN Game of the Month". Pretty simple, don't you think?
Now that we have the guidelines out of the way, let's move on and congratulate this month's winner...
IGNcube's Game of the Month
F-Zero GX
Developer: Amusement Vision/Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: August 25, 2003
Why We Picked it:: Developer Amusement Vision's F-Zero GX delivers in full. The futuristic racer stays true to the classic F-Zero franchise with similar play mechanics and recognizable characters and locations, but the experience is greatly deepened thanks to an all-new Story Mode. The Story Mode successfully spotlights the many characters in the F-Zero universe and simultaneously gives players a compelling reason to keep playing -- if, for nothing more, than to find out what happens. Meanwhile, its strong link to the Grand Prix mode demonstrates very smart design. GX is hard -- extremely difficult, in fact, and it will test even the most skilled players out there. But at the same time it's not cheap -- it relies on no tricks to increase challenge, and as a result players who practice and have the reflexes will eventually conquer all. Above all else, F-Zero GX is fast -- so fast that it'll take players by surprise. However, thanks to intuitive, tight control, zooming around tight corners at mach-breaking speeds is not an impossibility, but a feat to be learned and then mastered to the sheer satisfaction of those in control. Add in beautiful graphics and great sound, not to mention a four-player multiplayer mode and a craft editor, and it's clear that F-Zero GX has all the makings of a GameCube classic. This game gets our highest recommendation and also nabs itself the Game of the Month, narrowly beating out a significant offering from Namco.
Runner-Up
Soul Calibur II
Developer: Namco
Publisher: Namco
Released: August 25, 2003, 2003Why We Picked it:: What can we say? Soul Calibur II is everything we thought it would be. It takes the tried-and-true gameplay mechanics from the original Soul Calibur and tweaks them for a whole new audience on GameCube. Complete with responsive control, extremely intuitive fight and combo systems, a wealth of recognizable fighters and a fun Weapon Master mode, there's a lot to love about this top-notch fighter. As a multiplayer game, it's one of the best, especially since GCN owners can play as one of the all-time great characters, Link of Zelda fame (who is included exclusively in the Nintendo version.) So why didn't we pick it for game of the month? Well, just a single reason: for as good as SCII is, it's not quite as polished as F-Zero, and it's also very unchanged from its admittedly great Dreamcast predecessor. Still an amazing fighter deserving of our highest recommendation.
This month, GameCube owners can't lose.
