Novosti Donbassa reports that the mayor of Donetsk, Oleksandr Lukyanchenko, announced at a press conference today that militants from the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic have kidnapped the directors of two mines.
The directors of the A.A. Skochinsky and the Kalinina mines were abducted this morning from their places of work. After the press conference Lukyanchenko said that talks were under way to secure their release.
The article names the director of the Skochinsky mine as Varlam Valerianovich Miminoshvili.

In de aanloop naar een offensief tegen de rebellen in Donetsk heeft de Oekraense president Porosjenko een nieuwe stafchef benoemd die de militaire operatie in Oost-Oekrane moet cordineren.
Onlangs verving Porosjenko al de minister van Defensie door een daadkrachtige generaal die voor succes moet zorgen in de strijd tegen de opstandelingen.
Afgelopen weekend boekte het Oekraense regeringsleger een grote overwinning met de herovering van het rebellenbolwerk Slavjansk.
Campagne
Het leger bereidt zich nu voor op de herovering van de twee resterende grote steden waar de pro-Russische separatisten het al maandenlang voor het zeggen hebben, Donetsk en Loegansk.
Zeker voor de inname van Donetsk, een stad met 900.000 inwoners, zal een lange militaire campagne nodig zijn, denkt correspondent David Jan Godfroid. Waarschijnlijk zullen Oekraense militairen de stad omsingelen om de rebellen van de buitenwereld af te sluiten.
De burgemeester van Donetsk heeft president Porosjenko gevraagd geen luchtaanvallen of zwaar artillerievuur te gebruiken bij het offensief. "Het is onmogelijk om alle 900.000 inwoners te evacueren, waar moeten ze heen?", schrijft de burgemeester op zijn website.
Verdediging
Ook de honderden opstandelingen die Slavjansk zijn ontvlucht, houden zich op in Donetsk. De rebellen in die stad hebben ook een nieuwe bevelhebber aangewezen die de verdediging van Donetsk moet leiden.
Twee bruggen buiten de stad hebben ze al opgeblazen om de opmars van het leger te bemoeilijken.
De opstandelingen verwijten de Russische president Poetin dat hij hen niet te hulp schiet. Moskou staat onder zware druk vanuit het Westen om zich niet langer actief te bemoeien met de crisis in Oekrane, op straffe van verdergaande sancties.
Wapenstilstand
President Porosjenko heeft een nieuw eenzijdig bestand in Oost-Oekrane uitgesloten. Maar hij zou wel met een internationale contactgroep en de separatisten willen overleggen over een staakt-het-vuren. Dat zou moeten plaatsvinden in een stadje nabij Donetsk.
Valery Bolotov, the leader of the self-declared Lugansk People's Republic (LNR), has stated at a press conference today that his separatist forces are in control of the Izvarino area and the section of the Russo-Ukrainian border it lies on.
He claimed that LNR forces had succeeded in pushing back Ukrainian forces from Lugansk, noting that "some sections of the front line have moved in our favour."
He also claimed that the LNR militia had acquired significant military hardware, though did not specify where from (though their claim to control a border crossing certainly suggests Russian imports).
Bolotov said that his forces now had "armoured vehicles and artillery systems" including Grad rocket launchers, howitzers, anti-aircraft systems and mortars.
He also claimed that while the LNR was prepared for peace talks, they would only do so under their own terms, accusing the Ukrainian government of using the ceasefire to concentrate their forces.

Two statues of Lenin were toppled last night in Ukraine.
One of the statues was torn down in the village of Chervona Sloboda in the northern Sumy region.
Interfax-Ukraine reports that the Ukrainian Communist Party has confirmed the removal of the statue and is pursuing criminal charges:
"Law enforcers have established that vandals damaged the monument by having it pulled down from the pedestal by a tractor and a tow," the statement said.
Another statue was torn down in the town of Bilozerka in the southern Kherson region. Tired of waiting for the authorities' decision, Ukrainian activists came to Bilozerka and dismantled the monument to Lenin by themselves. The police did not interfere with the will of the people.

Borodai, who also scoffed at talk of Kiev having resources to blockade Donetsk and Luhansk, said Igor Strelkov, a Muscovite who commanded forces in Slaviansk, would take over as commander-in-chief for defending Donetsk.
But another rebel commander, Aleksander Khodakovsky of the so-called Vostok battalion - or eastern battalion - whose fighters also occupy positions in Donetsk was critical of the decision to pull out of Slaviansk.

A Day in Luhansk: War’s Crimes, Horrors, and Uncertainties
Het leger gaf toe zij de luchtaanval hadden uitgevoerd waarbij door een vergissing burgerdoelen geraakt zijn. De enige keer, want liever schuiven ze de schuld op de rebellen af.
Er zijn ook herhaaldelijk berichten over het gebruikt van 'Grad multiple rocket launcher system' door de rebellen, zonder dat er beelden zijn van schade. De volgende video heb ik meerdere malen voorbij zien komen (zelfs meerdere malen bij dezelfde tweeter.)

Self-defense forces of the self-proclaimed unrecognized Lugansk People’s Republic seized the town of Popasnaya on the border with the Donetsk region, Novorossiya news agency said.
It said several hundred self-defense fighters had arrived in the town overnight to Monday. The agency said there were no Ukrainian Army servicemen there.
Popasnaya is located 30 km away from the city of Artemovsk and 20 km away from the township of Stakhanov where a “reserve staff’ of the Lugansk People’s Republic leader Valery Bolotov is being set up.
It has a population of about 20,000 people and has an important railway junction.

Eerder op vrijdag maakte de Oekraense legerleiding bekend dat bij een luchtaanval bij de Oekranse grensplaats Izvarino zeker vijftig pro-Russische separatisten zijn gedood.
De luchtaanval was gericht op een ''concentratie separatisten vlak bij Izvarino'', dat aan de grens met Rusland ligt.
Offensief
De Oekraense troepen zijn ten westen van Donetsk, in Oost-Oekrane, begonnen aan een grote aanval om de separatisten tot overgave te dwingen.
In april startte het regering van Oekrane een grootschalige 'anti-terroristische operatie' in het oosten van het land om de pro-Russische separatisten te verdrijven. Bij gevechten tussen de rebellen en de militairen zijn al honderden mensen, overwegend militanten, omgekomen.

The wedding ceremony took place between militia member Arsen Pavlov, whose code-name is Motorola, and his bride Elena Kolenkina.

Ukraine Shuts Off Pirate Russian News Broadcasts In Recaptured Towns
When the Russian-backed separatists took over Kramatorsk, Mariupol, and Slavyansk, they captured TV and radio broadcast channels, shut them off, and replaced their signals with Russian state-operated TV and radio signals. Now that Ukraine has recaptured those towns they have shut off the Russian broadcasts and once again replaced them with Ukrainian news.
Ukraine's new President Petro Poroshenko says that this is part of a plan to restore these towns to normal, but also to ensure that accurate information is being reported in eastern Ukraine (translated by The Interpreter):

Doet mij denken aan Daw Aung San Suu Kyi (Birma). Zij vroeg zich wijselijk af wat 'Civil Society' was, want ze kwam in Birma niets tegen dat daar erop lijkt. Ze had wel veel te maken met NGO's die lobbyen voor belangengroepen (special interest groups). Ook wees ze het bedrijfsleven erop dat hun hulp bij de ontwikkeling welkom was, maar alleen als de bevolking van Birma daar zelf ook voordeel bij had.
Deze kritiek lijkt in Oekraine te ontbreken.

Mensen die uit zijn op macht gebruiken de sentimenten rond deze tegenstellingen om aan invloed te winnen. Ook hun rechtvaardigingen, in termen van het algemeen belang, zijn bedrieglijk. Wat nodig is, is een openlijke discussie over machtsmotieven (de sentimenten mbt hierarchievorming) en de nadelen daarvan. En de erkenning dat propaganda strijdig is met het algemeen belang.
Alle partijen (politiek & bedrijfsleven, nationaal & internationaal) hebben tonnen boter op hun hoofd, als het gaat om het misleiden van de bevolking op grond van eigenbelang.

(Reuters) - The European Union sought to reassure Russia on Friday that a free-trade pact with Ukraine was not aimed at hurting Moscow but rejected calls to postpone its implementation, offering more talks instead.
In a historic shift away from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova last month signed political and free-trade agreements with the European Union that have been at the center of months of conflict and hundreds of deaths.
Russia warned of "grave consequences" following the signing of the accords, which undermine Moscow's ability to create its own trade bloc with the former Soviet states, and has taken what Brussels says are retaliatory steps by blocking Moldovan wine and European meat exports.
In talks in Brussels aimed at defusing the tensions, Russian Economy Minister Alexei Ulyukayev said that Moscow would have to reevaluate its customs rules with Ukraine, meaning Kiev could lose preferential access to one of its biggest trade partners.
"I'm afraid that our colleagues do not fully understand the scale of the problem that we will be faced with," Ulyukayev was quoted as saying by Russian state news agency RIA, saying the agreement caused "risky areas" for Moscow.

(Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to help revive Cuba's struggling offshore oil exploration on Friday at the start of a six-day tour of Latin America as Russia aims to reassert its influence on the communist-ruled island.
Cuba produces about 55,000 barrels per day (bdp) through aging onshore wells and imports about 110,000 bpd on favorable terms from socialist ally Venezuela.
Putin was joined in Havana by close ally and so-called Russian oil czar Igor Sechin, the chairman of state oil company Rosneft, to finalize a deal to explore for oil off Cuba's northern coast.
Sechin is one of the Russian executives the United States has targeted for economic sanctions over the Ukraine crisis. The United States has blacklisted individuals believed to be part of Putin's inner circle, and Sechin is among the most influential people in Russia.
The Russian president also promised to reinvest $3.5 billion of Cuban debt with Russia into development projects on the island, part of a deal in which Russia forgave 90 percent of Cuba's debt, or almost $32 billion, most of it originating from Soviet loans to a fellow communist state.
Both measures inject much-needed foreign investment into Cuba and demonstrate an act of defiance against the United States, which maintains a 52-year-old economic embargo that effectively shuts out many Western companies from doing business in Cuba.
"We will provide support to our Cuban friends to overcome the illegal blockade of Cuba," Putin said.
Putin's journey to the back yard of the United States comes as he is under pressure from the West to help restrain pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine and urge them to find a negotiated solution.
Putin will also visit Argentina and Brazil for bilateral talks, and while in Brazil he will participate in a summit of the so-called BRICS nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In anticipation of a siege, leaders of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic announced they will evacuate entire neighborhoods. Many residents have rushed to pack up and leave for fear of getting caught in the cross-fire, given the insurgents' strategy of using residential areas for cover.
"The militia has begun blowing up roads, so I want to get out while there is still time. I don't want to turn into a living shield for the militants," said 56-year old businessman Andrei Koziyatko.
High-end shops are boarded up, and many other businesses, including insurance companies, real estate offices, beauty salons and notaries, have closed their doors. "For sale" and "For rent" signs abound where there were none a few weeks earlier. Property values have collapsed, with one-bedroom apartments in the city center now selling for $15,000, or one-third of what they cost before.
Estimates of how many people have left vary. The mayor's office said 30,000. Donetsk People's Republic prime minister Alexander Boroday put the number at 70,000 and rising.
At the Donetsk train station, people waited in long lines at the ticket office. Four trains a day go to the capital, Kiev, and three others travel in the opposite direction, to the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.
"People are trying to go in any which direction. But all the tickets for the coming week are sold out," station director Irina Nikolaicheva said.
Irina Khodyko, a 38-year old accountant, said she was leaving for Kiev with her 10-year old son and 12-year old daughter. Their apartment is by the once-gleaming international airport - now a bombed-out ruin in a district rendered inaccessible by the daily clashes.
"Life has become impossible. Every day they shoot. All the windows in our apartment are shot out. The children have stopped sleeping," Khodyko said.
She said insurgent forces tried to press-gang her husband into fighting, but he fled.
"The Ukrainian army is in no rush to liberate us. They have just abandoned us, and we are forced to get ourselves out of this mess," she said.
Koziyatko, the businessman, has been forced to close his lumber and building equipment supply business, which employed 17 people, after more than half his workers left Donetsk.
"The smartest, best-educated and most talented people are fleeing. And who is going to stay?" he asked.

Wat Strelkov en Borodai hier doen, valt onder het kopje oorlogsmisdaden. Vanuit hun motieven of idealen beslissen ze voor een hele samenleving wat wenselijk is. Daarbij zetten ze massaal mensenlevens op het spel. Er is geen juridisch of democratisch kader dat hun rol rechtvaardigt. Zij zijn niet gekozen door de bevolking van Donbass (geen democratie), ze laten zich niets gezeggen door Oekraine (het legitieme gezag), ze zijn niet eens inwoners van Donbass. Beide. Er is een interpretatie die de Romantiek ziet als een reactie op de verlichting. Er is echter net zoveel voor te zeggen, dat de romantiek een reactie is op het autocratische bestuursmodel waar de verlichting zelf ook een reactie op is. Volgens mij is er nog steeds een kloof tussen mens en natuurwetenschappen. Slechts enkelen overzien het heel speelveld van geschiedenis, filosofie, natuur- en mens wetenschap. Hoewel op zijn manier ook beperk, is Russels boek "Geschiedenis van de westerse filosofie" nog steeds aan te bevelen. Gisteren had Moskou al gezegd dat het zich "het recht voorbehoudt alle noodzakelijke maatregelen te nemen om (zijn) grondgebied te verdedigen" nadat schoten waren afgevuurd op Russische grenswachters. Rusland beschikt naar eigen zeggen over overtuigende bewijzen dat de schoten van de Oekraense kant van de grens kwamen. Kiev maakt dan weer gewag van een "provocatie" en beschuldigt de Russen ervan met mortiervuur geschoten te hebben op een grenspost.

Hij zegt dat de separatisten verantwoordelijk zijn voor de mortierinslag in een woonwijk aan de Russische kant van de grens. Daarbij kwam het afgelopen weekend een Rus om het leven.
Rusland heeft woedend op het incident gereageerd en stelt het Oekraense leger daarvoor verantwoordelijk. Maar volgens de legerwoordvoerder is die beschuldiging nergens op gebaseerd. Hij zegt dat de separatisten voortdurend mortiergranaten richting Rusland afvuren.
Luchtaanvallen
Het Russische persbureau Ria Novosti meldde eerder vanochtend dat het Kremlin overweegt beperkte, gerichte luchtaanvallen uit te voeren op Oekraense doelen. Een anonieme bron zegt dat grootschalige inzet van grondtroepen is uitgesloten.

UNIAN reports that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has announced the retaking by Ukrainian forces of several villages on the outskirts of Lugansk, where government forces are making a concerted push against separatist fighters.
They report (translated by The Interpreter):

There was also an unsuccessful attempt made by the militants to break through a checkpoint near Zelenopolye at around 23:00 [20:00 GMT]. 2 cars carrying militants were destroyed by ATO forces during the battle. There were no losses among the members of the armed forces.

OTTAWA - About 120 Canadian soldiers leave for eastern and central Europe today as part of a continuing show of support for Ukraine.
The military would not give a specific destination for the troops.
The soldiers are from the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment and they will relieve a contingent from the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, which was sent to Poland earlier this spring.
The latest Canadian detachment is slated to take part in training exercises with U.S. and NATO troops.

Dozens of Russian individuals and institutions have been placed on a sanctions list.
Canada also has six CF-18 fighter jets in Europe. They were originally sent to Romania, but now are moving to Latvia on Russia's Baltic doorstep.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, another battle rages far from the front lines—a battle between Russian news sites and a group of Kiev-based journalists who say the sites are misusing, even fabricating, news photographs filed from Ukraine.
In an effort to put a stop to what they see as fraud, the journalists—who are alumni and students at Kiev’s Mohyla School of Journalism—have launched Stopfake.org, a “fact-checking project, which aims to help people separate the truth from the lie in the media,” as the group’s co-founder and editor-in-chief Oleg Shankovskyi tells TIME.
Shankovskyi and his colleagues feel that the best way to combat what they see as an inappropriate use of images is simply to point out the inaccuracies. “Very often people just don’t think critically about what they hear from the media—they just believe it,” he says.

The group points to one recurring instance of apparent misrepresentation as typical of the stories
they are trying to counter. A woman called Maria Tsypko periodically emerges in interviews on Russian TV, each time in an apparently different pro-Russian role. She has been interviewed as a separatist camp organizer in Odessa, played a political refugee in Sevastopol and even collected donations in Crimea to ask Russia for help.
Not all misappropriated media has been this blatant, the group says. Often photographs shot in China, Canada and Mexico over the past 30 years are recaptioned to represent events currently occurring in Ukraine.
One photo of a burning tank claimed to be from conflicts in Donbass was actually taken in 1989 during the Tiananmen Square protests. Another image pictured a crying girl sitting on the body of her deceased mother, allegedly killed in Donbass. The image is actually a promotional photo from the 2010 Russian war film Fortress of War.
One of the more obvious examples of misappropriation involves Ron Haviv’s iconic 1992 image from the Bosnian War, which shows Serbian paramilitary officers, known as Arkan’s Tigers, kicking the dying bodies of Muslims. The photo recently went viral on Facebook and Twitter, with a caption claiming it portrayed Ukrainian soldiers in Crimea.
“This, of course, is just a complete misuse and fabrication, and is being used to instill fear,” says Haviv. “It doesn’t represent the current situation in Ukraine because it’s not Ukraine.”
Indeed, he views photo misuse as part of a larger trend in recent conflict photography. War-torn countries like Syria have become too dangerous for many professional journalists to visit, leaving the media often dependent on images and videos produced by the combatants themselves. “I think we’re certainly seeing with the war in Syria, and now in this conflict, the power of social media,” says Haviv. “It’s so easy to take an image from one place, put another caption on it and put it out there.” The line between news and propaganda has never been so thin.

DNIPROPETROVSK, Ukraine — Ukraine’s top defense official said Monday that Russia may have shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane, an action that would represent a dramatic new step in the months-long conflict that has engulfed eastern Ukraine.
Pro-Russian separatists immediately asserted responsibility for the downing of the An-26 plane over Luhansk, but Ukrainian Defense Minister Valery Heletey said the aircraft had been flying too high for their shoulder-mounted rockets to reach it.
“The plane was downed by another, more powerful missile weapon that probably was used from the territory of the Russian Federation,” Heletey told President Petro Poroshenko, according to a statement on the president’s Web site. Russia did not comment on the accusation.

This all paints a telling picture of Russia’s continued policy of destabilization in eastern Ukraine.

Putin said he would urge Brazil, China, India and South Africa to draw "substantive conclusions" from sanctions imposed on Russia over its role in the Ukraine crisis during a two-day BRICS summit in Brazil starting on Tuesday.
"Recently Russia has been exposed to a sanction attack by the United States and its allies," the Kremlin leader told Itar-Tass news agency in an interview.
"Together we should think about a system of measures that would help prevent the harassment of countries that do not agree with some foreign policy decisions made by the United States and their allies, but would promote a civilised dialogue on all points at issue based on mutual respect."
Putin gave no details but said the BRICS should cooperate more at the United Nations, where Russia and China have the right of veto, and work together more closely to combat security threats.
"Any attempts to create a model of international relations where all decisions are made within a single 'pole' are ineffective, malfunction regularly, and are ultimately set to fail," he told Itar-Tass.

Die T-72's is oud materiaal wat Rusland niet meer gebruikt en beschikbaar steld samen met nog wat andere voertuigen zoals BMP's en trucks. Het wordt met treinen richting de grens gevoerd waar 'strijders' die in de regio Rostov vermoedelijk hun kamp hebben, worden opgeleid om de tanks te busturen. Om de paar dagen komen nieuwe tanks binnen zodat het niet al te veel opvalt. Op deze manier brengt Rusland het conflict in balans om onderhandelingen af te dwingen met de Oekranse regering.quote:

Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat de bestuurselite in de VS en Europa best weet wat er in Oekraine gebeurd. Het zijn wij burgers die zoek gespeeld worden. Een punt wat jij niet wilt begrijpen.
Daarnaast zijn de T-72's van de pro-Russen voorzien van Reactive Armor, onder andere aan de zijkant. De meeste Oekranse modellen, op enkele na hebben dit niet. Ook de camo wrap lijkt anders dan die van de Oekranse.

Als Rusland zich actief gaat bemoeien dan zal het direct merkbaar zijn lijkt mij. Het risico lijkt me veel te groot dat er een Russische soldaat van hoge rang sneuvelt en / of gevangen gezet dan wel omgekocht is die het hele verhaal aan de Oekrainers (of de VN veiligheidsraad) opbiecht.
Met de Krim bezetting zocht Rusland doelbewust doelwitten uit, zoals basissen, vliegvelden etc. tot dusver lijken de acties in de andere gebieden spontaan, lukraak en weinig samenhangend.
Omdat Oekraine deze overname actief bestrijdt heeft het geleid tot de huidige situatie. Het doel dat Rusland nu beoogd met het steunen van de rebellen is een onderhandelingspositie in het overleg. Daarmee wil men een vergaande autonomie van de regio's afdwingen om zo alsnog deze regio's te kunnen controleren.
Rusland hoeft dus alleen het conflict gaande te houden. Daartoe hebben ze eigen mensen zoals Strelkov, Borodai daar ingezet om het te organiseren, en deze voorzien ze van de nodige materieel en mensen om het gaande te houden. Dat verklaart de konvooien die regelmatig vanaf de grens door Donbas rijden. Het verklaart ook waarom er zo hard gevochten wordt om de grens open te houden.
Mensen die er leiding aan geven zijn daarvoor officieel ontslagen, zodat ze zich kunnen voordoen als vrijwilligers. Er wordt gezorgd dat er altijd een mogelijkheid van ontkenning van Russische betrokkenheid is. Voldoende zodat SadPanda kan stellen dat betrokkenheid niet bewezen is.

“The Trilateral Contact Group has made all necessary efforts for a resumption of consultations with representatives of the separatists in the east of Ukraine. Unfortunately, a video conference with the separatists, scheduled for today with the aim of agreeing on modalities for a next round of consultations, and agreed upon at the highest international level, did not materialise. The Contact Group is seriously concerned about the fact that since June 27, no such consultations have taken place. In the opinion of the Contact Group, this indicates a lack of willingness on the side of the separatists to engage in substantive talks on a mutually agreed cease-fire.
The Contact Group reconfirmed its support to President Poroshenko's Peace Plan and to the commitments stated in the Joint Declaration in Berlin on July 2, 2014. The Contact Group appealed to the separatists to return to consultations without further delay.

An OSCE Mission on Wednesday will begin its work in the area of the Russian-Ukrainian border, Channel 5 reported citing AFP. The first group of observers will consist of three people.
The organization confirmed that they accepted Russia's invitation to monitor the situation on the border.
"As part of the training and consultations on the mandate and powers of the OSCE observation mission the organization will send an assessment mission composed of three representatives of the OSCE Secretariat to the checkpoints of Donetsk and Gukovo on the Russian-Ukrainian border," the OSCE noted.
The first group will include representatives of the OSCE Conflict Prevention Centre, Border Security and Management Unit, Transnational Threats Department, as well as Security Guarantee Department.

Early on Tuesday morning, gigantic explosions awoke residents in Snizhne, a small city in eastern Ukraine, as bombs falling from the sky ripped through brickwork and gouged large craters. Multiple buildings in the town’s center were hit, including the tax administration building and several apartment blocks, when a fighter jet fired at least six heavyweight rockets in the area, killing at least 11. Both sides in the conflict appeared to blame each other for the attack.
