A motorway bridge has been blown up in Ukraine’s southeast, the National Security and Defense Council has said. The bridge connects two industrial centers — the towns of Dzerzhinsk and Horlivka.
The explosion occurred one kilometer from the Mayorskaya railway station, the National Security and Defense Council's spokesperson Andrei Lysenko said on Friday. The train movement has stopped, he added.
In recent days three bridges have been blown up in the Donetsk region:
a motorway bridge on the Rostov-Kharkov highway;
a railway bridge at the settlement of Novobakhmutovka;
a bridge at the settlement of Zakotnoye.
Railway lines have been blasted on the Skotovataya-Yasinovatay section of Donetsk railways.
Two bridges across the Seversky Donetsk River and the Tepla River have been blown up in the Luhansk region.
An armored carrier has been blown up at the settlement of Krasnaya Zvezda, Donbass.

Doet mij denken aan Daw Aung San Suu Kyi (Birma). Zij vroeg zich wijselijk af wat 'Civil Society' was, want ze kwam in Birma niets tegen dat daar erop lijkt. Ze had wel veel te maken met NGO's die lobbyen voor belangengroepen (special interest groups). Ook wees ze het bedrijfsleven erop dat hun hulp bij de ontwikkeling welkom was, maar alleen als de bevolking van Birma daar zelf ook voordeel bij had.
Deze kritiek lijkt in Oekraine te ontbreken.

Na de onafhankelijkheid in 1991 kun je een nationalistische golf verwachten. Dat heeft een land nodig om een eigen identiteit te vormen. Nationalisme drijft op sentimenten die passen bij een (horizontale) wij-zij tegenstelling. Men zet zich vooral af tegen Rusland. Daarom kan het huidige conflict gezien worden als een onafhankelijkheidsoorlog, dat drijft op een nationalistische ideologie en waarbij vroegere de symbiotische banden worden afgebroken.
De Maidan beweging is een protestbeweging. Mensen verenigen zich in een doel, maar verschillen vaak radicaal in hun interpretatie van de situatie. Het doel was het regime ten val te brengen. De corruptie en het wanbeleid was de voornaamste oorzaak (zie al die miljardairs in een straatarm land). Dit is een andere (verticale) wij-zij tegenstelling.
Mensen die uit zijn op macht gebruiken de sentimenten rond deze tegenstellingen om aan invloed te winnen. Ook hun rechtvaardigingen, in termen van het algemeen belang, zijn bedrieglijk. Wat nodig is, is een openlijke discussie over machtsmotieven (de sentimenten mbt hierarchievorming) en de nadelen daarvan. En de erkenning dat propaganda strijdig is met het algemeen belang.
Alle partijen (politiek & bedrijfsleven, nationaal & internationaal) hebben tonnen boter op hun hoofd, als het gaat om het misleiden van de bevolking op grond van eigenbelang.

EU offers Russia talks but no delay to Ukraine trade deal
(Reuters) - The European Union sought to reassure Russia on Friday that a free-trade pact with Ukraine was not aimed at hurting Moscow but rejected calls to postpone its implementation, offering more talks instead.
In a historic shift away from Russia, Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova last month signed political and free-trade agreements with the European Union that have been at the center of months of conflict and hundreds of deaths.
Russia warned of "grave consequences" following the signing of the accords, which undermine Moscow's ability to create its own trade bloc with the former Soviet states, and has taken what Brussels says are retaliatory steps by blocking Moldovan wine and European meat exports.
In talks in Brussels aimed at defusing the tensions, Russian Economy Minister Alexei Ulyukayev said that Moscow would have to reevaluate its customs rules with Ukraine, meaning Kiev could lose preferential access to one of its biggest trade partners.
"I'm afraid that our colleagues do not fully understand the scale of the problem that we will be faced with," Ulyukayev was quoted as saying by Russian state news agency RIA, saying the agreement caused "risky areas" for Moscow.
Moscow fears Ukraine may re-export EU products to Russia, avoiding duties that Russia imposes to protect its own output.
Ulyukayev said the EU-Ukraine deal risked "the possibility of displacement of Russian goods on the European market and Ukrainian goods from the Ukrainian market".

(Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to help revive Cuba's struggling offshore oil exploration on Friday at the start of a six-day tour of Latin America as Russia aims to reassert its influence on the communist-ruled island.
Cuba produces about 55,000 barrels per day (bdp) through aging onshore wells and imports about 110,000 bpd on favorable terms from socialist ally Venezuela.
Putin was joined in Havana by close ally and so-called Russian oil czar Igor Sechin, the chairman of state oil company Rosneft, to finalize a deal to explore for oil off Cuba's northern coast.
Sechin is one of the Russian executives the United States has targeted for economic sanctions over the Ukraine crisis. The United States has blacklisted individuals believed to be part of Putin's inner circle, and Sechin is among the most influential people in Russia.
The Russian president also promised to reinvest $3.5 billion of Cuban debt with Russia into development projects on the island, part of a deal in which Russia forgave 90 percent of Cuba's debt, or almost $32 billion, most of it originating from Soviet loans to a fellow communist state.
Both measures inject much-needed foreign investment into Cuba and demonstrate an act of defiance against the United States, which maintains a 52-year-old economic embargo that effectively shuts out many Western companies from doing business in Cuba.
"We will provide support to our Cuban friends to overcome the illegal blockade of Cuba," Putin said.
Putin's journey to the back yard of the United States comes as he is under pressure from the West to help restrain pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine and urge them to find a negotiated solution.

Many In anticipation of a siege, leaders of the self-styled Donetsk People's Republic announced they will evacuate entire neighborhoods. Many residents have rushed to pack up and leave for fear of getting caught in the cross-fire, given the insurgents' strategy of using residential areas for cover.
"The militia has begun blowing up roads, so I want to get out while there is still time. I don't want to turn into a living shield for the militants," said 56-year old businessman Andrei Koziyatko.
High-end shops are boarded up, and many other businesses, including insurance companies, real estate offices, beauty salons and notaries, have closed their doors. "For sale" and "For rent" signs abound where there were none a few weeks earlier. Property values have collapsed, with one-bedroom apartments in the city center now selling for $15,000, or one-third of what they cost before.
Estimates of how many people have left vary. The mayor's office said 30,000. Donetsk People's Republic prime minister Alexander Boroday put the number at 70,000 and rising.
At the Donetsk train station, people waited in long lines at the ticket office. Four trains a day go to the capital, Kiev, and three others travel in the opposite direction, to the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.
"People are trying to go in any which direction. But all the tickets for the coming week are sold out," station director Irina Nikolaicheva said.
Irina Khodyko, a 38-year old accountant, said she was leaving for Kiev with her 10-year old son and 12-year old daughter. Their apartment is by the once-gleaming international airport - now a bombed-out ruin in a district rendered inaccessible by the daily clashes.
"Life has become impossible. Every day they shoot. All the windows in our apartment are shot out. The children have stopped sleeping," Khodyko said.
She said insurgent forces tried to press-gang her husband into fighting, but he fled.
"The Ukrainian army is in no rush to liberate us. They have just abandoned us, and we are forced to get ourselves out of this mess," she said.
Koziyatko, the businessman, has been forced to close his lumber and building equipment supply business, which employed 17 people, after more than half his workers left Donetsk.
"The smartest, best-educated and most talented people are fleeing. And who is going to stay?" he asked.

A large convoy of armored vehicles carrying armed militants has broken into Ukraine through the border in the Luhansk region, the head of the Right Cause public organization, Dmytro Snehiriov, has told a Ukrinform correspondent by phone.
"A convoy of armored vehicles has just passed through the village of Velyky Sukhodil [Krasnodon district]. Russian tanks of the latest modification carrying Russian flags are moving ahead... Militants left Sverdlovsk. Perhaps a counterattack is being prepared either near Izvaryne or Chervonopartyzansk," Snehiriov said.
Recently, according to locals, the main flow of Russian military hardware and militants goes near Velyky Sukhodil.

Al heel lang zoekt men naar een direct bewijs van onloochenbare Russische inmenging in Donbass. Het liefst Russische tanks van een type dat in Oekraine niet voorkomt. Nog liever een hele colonne tegelijk, die in vol daglicht komt binnen rijden.quote:

Maar die komen niet. Wat wel komt is een eindeloze stroom berichtjes die suggereren dat het net gebeurd ofwel aanstaande is. Zo is er ook al dagen een verhaal dat Russiche troepen zullen binnen trekken onder het mom van een 'vredesmissie'. Bijvoorbeeld als er granaten aan de Russische kant van de grens ontploffen. Bijvoorbeeld omdat de rebellen vanaf de Russische grens schieten op het Oekrainse leger terugschiet en te ver doorschiet ....
Mocht het zover zijn dan zal het wel snel duidelijk worden. Ik sla dit soort berichten over totdat ze onmiskenbaar zijn.
Indirect bewijs of beter indicaties van inmenging is er overigens genoeg.

Wat Strelkov en Borodai hier doen, valt onder het kopje oorlogsmisdaden. Vanuit hun motieven of idealen beslissen ze voor een hele samenleving wat wenselijk is. Daarbij zetten ze massaal mensenlevens op het spel. Er is geen juridisch of democratisch kader dat hun rol rechtvaardigt. Zij zijn niet gekozen door de bevolking van Donbass (geen democratie), ze laten zich niets gezeggen door Oekraine (het legitieme gezag), ze zijn niet eens inwoners van Donbass. Ze hebben dit al eerder gedaan in Bosni, Transnistri & Tsjetsjeni.quote:

Dat wordt natuurlijk ook aangemoedigd door Poetin, die zegt alle etnische Russen te willen beschermen. Blijkbaar meent hij puur op grond van etniciteit een legitieme vertegenwoordiger te zijn voor mensen die geen Russisch staatsburger zijn.
En je kan je inderdaad afvragen in hoeverre de situatie in Oost-Oekrane nog bijdraagt aan het daadwerkelijke beschermen van de gewone, ook etnisch Russische mensen.

Beide. Er is een interpretatie die de Romantiek ziet als een reactie op de verlichting. Er is echter net zoveel voor te zeggen, dat de romantiek een reactie is op het autocratische bestuursmodel waar de verlichting zelf ook een reactie op is. Goethe en zijn bewonderaars in Duitsland verwelkomde de komst van Napoleon, in de hoop dat hij een modern bestuur zou brengen. Napoleon stond toen nog bekent als een voorvechter van de verlichting. Goethe is een bekende romanticus. Zijn kleuren theorie is een reactie op Newtons kleuren theorie, die van Newton modern rationeel en die van Goethe gevoelsmatig romantisch.quote:

Een belangrijke reden waarom het allemaal niet goed te vangen is in simpele stromingen, is dat veel representanten zelf op meerdere gedachten hinken en zelden het allemaal helder begrijpen in termen van de latere classificaties. Newton was tevens een theoloog (en alchemist). Goethe beschouwde zijn kleurentheorie als zijn beste werk, en zag zichzelf tevens als wetenschapper. In de natuurwetenschappen ziet men een mechanisering van het wereldbeeld als de basis van een nieuw wereldbeeld, waar de moderne tijd uit voortvloeit. In de menswetenschappen is Jonathan Israel bezig de geesten rijp te maken, dat de verlichting al eerder begon dan de 18e eeuw: de radicale verlichting. Maar hij lijkt de koppeling met de mechanisering van het wereldbeeld nog niet te hebben gelegd.
Volgens mij is er nog steeds een kloof tussen mens en natuurwetenschappen. Slechts enkelen overzien het heel speelveld van geschiedenis, filosofie, natuur- en mens wetenschap. Hoewel op zijn manier ook beperk, is Russels boek "Geschiedenis van de westerse filosofie" nog steeds aan te bevelen. Dit is het eerste boek, waarin een vooraanstaand filosoof de geschiedenis van de filosofie interpreteert in het licht van de maatschappelijke en politieke ontwikkelingen, die kennis heeft van de natuurwetenschappen.

Gisteren had Moskou al gezegd dat het zich "het recht voorbehoudt alle noodzakelijke maatregelen te nemen om (zijn) grondgebied te verdedigen" nadat schoten waren afgevuurd op Russische grenswachters. Rusland beschikt naar eigen zeggen over overtuigende bewijzen dat de schoten van de Oekraense kant van de grens kwamen. Kiev maakt dan weer gewag van een "provocatie" en beschuldigt de Russen ervan met mortiervuur geschoten te hebben op een grenspost.

Nine people were killed and six others injured in a shooting by the Ukrainian army near Trudovskaya coal mine in Donetsk on Saturday, the city council said in a statement on its website, adding that previous reports of 12 people killed are wrong. The city's administrators expressed their condolences to the victims' families and said the city would pay for the funerals.
There have been reports of more shooting in Donetsk over the weekend, but the city's utilities and public transport are said to be functioning as normal.

Escalatie
"De gebeurtenissen van de afgelopen dagen laten zien dat Rusland een weg van escalatie is ingeslagen", zegt de Oekraense legerwoordvoerder. Hij zegt dat de separatisten verantwoordelijk zijn voor de mortierinslag in een woonwijk aan de Russische kant van de grens. Daarbij kwam het afgelopen weekend een Rus om het leven.
Rusland heeft woedend op het incident gereageerd en stelt het Oekraense leger daarvoor verantwoordelijk. Maar volgens de legerwoordvoerder is die beschuldiging nergens op gebaseerd. Hij zegt dat de separatisten voortdurend mortiergranaten richting Rusland afvuren.
Luchtaanvallen
Het Russische persbureau Ria Novosti meldde eerder vanochtend dat het Kremlin overweegt beperkte, gerichte luchtaanvallen uit te voeren op Oekraense doelen. Een anonieme bron zegt dat grootschalige inzet van grondtroepen is uitgesloten.

Ukrainian Forces Retake Several Villages Around Lugansk
UNIAN reports that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence has announced the retaking by Ukrainian forces of several villages on the outskirts of Lugansk, where government forces are making a concerted push against separatist fighters.

Ukraine Crisis: More Canadian Troops Heading To Europe
OTTAWA - About 120 Canadian soldiers leave for eastern and central Europe today as part of a continuing show of support for Ukraine.
The military would not give a specific destination for the troops.
The soldiers are from the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment and they will relieve a contingent from the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, which was sent to Poland earlier this spring.
The latest Canadian detachment is slated to take part in training exercises with U.S. and NATO troops.
The Harper government has been strongly supportive of Ukraine in its showdown with Russia.
Dozens of Russian individuals and institutions have been placed on a sanctions list.
Canada also has six CF-18 fighter jets in Europe. They were originally sent to Romania, but now are moving to Latvia on Russia's Baltic doorstep.

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, another battle rages far from the front lines—a battle between Russian news sites and a group of Kiev-based journalists who say the sites are misusing, even fabricating, news photographs filed from Ukraine.
In an effort to put a stop to what they see as fraud, the journalists—who are alumni and students at Kiev’s Mohyla School of Journalism—have launched Stopfake.org, a “fact-checking project, which aims to help people separate the truth from the lie in the media,” as the group’s co-founder and editor-in-chief Oleg Shankovskyi tells TIME.
Shankovskyi and his colleagues feel that the best way to combat what they see as an inappropriate use of images is simply to point out the inaccuracies. “Very often people just don’t think critically about what they hear from the media—they just believe it,” he says.

The group points to one recurring instance of apparent misrepresentation as typical of the stories
they are trying to counter. A woman called Maria Tsypko periodically emerges in interviews on Russian TV, each time in an apparently different pro-Russian role. She has been interviewed as a separatist camp organizer in Odessa, played a political refugee in Sevastopol and even collected donations in Crimea to ask Russia for help.
Not all misappropriated media has been this blatant, the group says. Often photographs shot in China, Canada and Mexico over the past 30 years are recaptioned to represent events currently occurring in Ukraine.
One photo of a burning tank claimed to be from conflicts in Donbass was actually taken in 1989 during the Tiananmen Square protests. Another image pictured a crying girl sitting on the body of her deceased mother, allegedly killed in Donbass. The image is actually a promotional photo from the 2010 Russian war film Fortress of War.
One of the more obvious examples of misappropriation involves Ron Haviv’s iconic 1992 image from the Bosnian War, which shows Serbian paramilitary officers, known as Arkan’s Tigers, kicking the dying bodies of Muslims. The photo recently went viral on Facebook and Twitter, with a caption claiming it portrayed Ukrainian soldiers in Crimea.
“This, of course, is just a complete misuse and fabrication, and is being used to instill fear,” says Haviv. “It doesn’t represent the current situation in Ukraine because it’s not Ukraine.”
Indeed, he views photo misuse as part of a larger trend in recent conflict photography. War-torn countries like Syria have become too dangerous for many professional journalists to visit, leaving the media often dependent on images and videos produced by the combatants themselves. “I think we’re certainly seeing with the war in Syria, and now in this conflict, the power of social media,” says Haviv. “It’s so easy to take an image from one place, put another caption on it and put it out there.” The line between news and propaganda has never been so thin.

Putin said he would urge Brazil, China, India and South Africa to draw "substantive conclusions" from sanctions imposed on Russia over its role in the Ukraine crisis during a two-day BRICS summit in Brazil starting on Tuesday.
"Recently Russia has been exposed to a sanction attack by the United States and its allies," the Kremlin leader told Itar-Tass news agency in an interview.
"Together we should think about a system of measures that would help prevent the harassment of countries that do not agree with some foreign policy decisions made by the United States and their allies, but would promote a civilised dialogue on all points at issue based on mutual respect."
Putin gave no details but said the BRICS should cooperate more at the United Nations, where Russia and China have the right of veto, and work together more closely to combat security threats.

Ik las laatst dat Rusland elk moment weer de rebellen kan steunen, vraag me af wat hier de reden van is de rebellen werden de laatste weken toch een beetje in de steek gelaten door het Kremlin, nu krijgen ze plotseling wel weer steun?
Ik ben benieuwd wat hiervan steekhoudend is. Het lijkt erop dat aan de Oekrainse zijde de propaganda machine ook op volle toeren draait.
