Zij hebben sinds 1980 alle regels en procedures van de Formule 1 samengesteld, om nog maar te zwijgen van de uit 122 landen afkomstige afgevaardigden van de FIA, die over alle regels die ik en mijn collega’s van de WMSC hebben gemaakt, hebben gestemd.”

Tijdens de persconferentie van de FOTA, vanmiddag in Bologna, is met geen woord gerept over de affaire, hoewel de brief daarvoor al verstuurd is.

M'n Engelse leraar beval het me aan voor m'n literatuurlijst toen ik er over klaagde dat de standaard literatuur vreselijk saai was (samen met nog wat juweeltjes als The Right Stuff en Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance). Prachtig boek over verbitterde oude mannen die strijden om het laatste zielige beetje macht dat ze rest in hun miserabele leven.

Max en Bernie hebben iets meer macht, maar ik denk dat als ik het boek nu zou herlezen, ik hun koppen keer op keer bij de personages van het boek voor me zou zien.

Sir Richard Branson has signed a deal to re-name the new Formula One team Manor Grand Prix after his Virgin brand in 2010, Britain's BBC reports.

The flamboyant billionaire said at Silverstone last weekend that he is unlikely to continue sponsoring Brawn GP next year, because the Brackley based championship leaders' value has skyrocketed.

Before the former Honda team's immense success, Brandon had grand plans for Brawn, including full naming sponsorship and possibly the transfer of equity.

Those plans, however, have reportedly been simply switched to the fledgling and more affordable 2010 entry Manor Grand Prix, the collaboration of boss John Booth's F3 outfit and former Simtek chief Nick Wirth.

Along with the Virgin speculation, the BBC reports that another well known global brand will be involved with a new Formula One team in 2010.

Like Branson, YouTube co-founder American Chad Hurley was also at Silverstone, reportedly putting the finishing touches on a deal with the new US F1 team.

As the Team US F1 plans speed along, team co-founder Peter Windsor was stepped down from his role interviewing the drivers in the official post-qualifying and race press conferences, replaced by former ITV commentator James Allen.

Is Ron Dennis coming back? The departure of Max Mosley as president of the FIA has changed the landscape of Formula One in a sudden and unexpected way and there are certain individuals, Dennis among them, who will feel more able to enjoy their sport than hitherto.

The former group chairman and chief executive of McLaren Mercedes was one of Mosley’s biggest enemies. Under Dennis’s watch, McLaren were hit by the FIA with a £50 million sanction for cheating in 2007, regarded as the biggest fine in sporting history.

Then Dennis was forced out of his job this year in what some in the sport believe was a deal struck with the FIA to limit the punishment that the team would receive as a result of Lewis Hamilton and their former sporting director, Dave Ryan, lying to the stewards at the Australian Grand Prix.

Dennis has since gone to the motor racing equivalent of Siberia — a new McLaren sports car production project — but, much as he is enjoying his new role, there can be little doubt that he will be tempted back to Formula One now that his nemesis has been removed.

The team were coy about it on Thursday, pointing out that Dennis will not be coming back to the pitwall or taking over the team principal duties now fulfilled by Martin Whitmarsh. But returning to racetracks on grands-prix weekends is certainly back on the agenda. As one source put it: “Racegoers might be seeing a little more of him from now.”

Although Dennis has never been far from controversy in the past couple of years, he is still regarded highly by his peers and many team principals believe that he was unfairly treated by the FIA under the presidency of Mosley.

Indeed, the fine imposed on McLaren and the way in which he was forced out this year are cited by some leading figures in the Formula One Teams Association as among the reasons why they could not bring themselves to enter into a budget-cap environment policed by Mosley.

FIA president Max Mosley has warned the governing body's World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in Paris that the sport of Formula One should be prepared for 'difficult times' following the actions of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) this week, confirming that their apparent peace deal has now disintegrated.

With fans across the globe delighted to see a compromise found between the FIA and FOTA on Wednesday, the opposite effect is now likely to be seen as Mosley has said on Friday that the teams have not kept their end of the deal. With FOTA having seemingly branded Mosley as a 'dictator' in F1 and wished him a 'good retirement' on Thursday, Mosley has responded with a letter of caution to the WMSC in Paris, stressing the it is and always will be the FIA - and not FOTA - which runs the sport.

'It is disappointing that (Luca) Montezemolo (FOTA chairman) did not keep his part of the bargain we made last Wednesday,' reads Mosley's letter to the rest of the FIA. 'I had anyway decided not to offer myself for re-election next October and, given what I have had to contend with during the last 12 months, I needed a peaceful summer before starting a more leisurely existence. The compromise we found was therefore acceptable to me personally and seemed in the overall interests of Formula 1.'

The letter went on to confirm that FOTA may well now set up its own breakaway series and that F1 could suffer as a result: 'But when FOTA falsely claimed that they had ousted me and imposed their will on the FIA, the situation became intolerable. No doubt we face a difficult period. This may well result in short-term problems in Formula 1. It is possible that FOTA will set up an independent series. That is their right, provided they do so under the International Sporting Code.

But the Formula 1 World Championship will continue to be run by the FIA as it has been for 60 years. The Championship has had difficult times in the past and no doubt will again in the future but that is no reason to hand control to an outside body, still less one with little or no understanding of sporting ethics and under the control of an industry we have constantly to monitor.'

Mosley also added that the various sporting committees of each country connected with the FIA are in agreement with the Paris-based federation. 'Member clubs of the FIA from all over the world have made it clear that they will never allow the car industry to decide who may and who may not be president of the FIA,' the letter reads on.

'This has nothing to do with me as an individual, it is about the independence of the FIA and its member clubs as defenders of the motorist and arbiters of international motor sport. In addition to motor sport, the FIA has to defend the interests of the motorist in areas such as road safety and the environment and even basic things like access to technical information for independent garages. This often brings us into conflict with the car industry. When we started EuroNCAP (safety tests scheme), one of the major manufacturers threatened to quit Formula 1 if we did not abandon our activities. The FIA has to be free to confront the car industry whenever necessary.'

"We hebben nu stabiliteit nodig. We hebben transparantie nodig en we hebben vrede nodig. We houden allemaal van de Formule 1. Here's an interesting rumor which points out the possibility of how dirty the FIA's 2010 Formula One application process might have been...

According to the British publication Guardian Formula One teams have written the FIA and are set to lodge a formal 'complaint against the (FIA) chief steward, Alan Donnelly, amid suspicions his company has been involved in helping to set up (F1) grid newcomers Manor.'

The story goes on to indicate that a senior member of Donnelly's private company is handling the public relations - free of charge - for the upstart organization, and that the team's technical director was a partner of Max Mosley's failed Formula One team - Simtek - 20 years ago.

Furthermore Donnelly was seen working the paddock on the organizations behalf, yet claims no 'direct' involvement because he claims he was just introducing them around in his FIA role.

Which is kind of like you saying to your kids... 'Take the garbage out and throw it in the street', but when they do it the police come to investigate, and you indicate that you had no 'direct' involvement so arrest my kids.

Clearly we are dealing with powerful people who parse every syllable to hide their actions.
No wonder Lola, N Technology withdrew their applications for the 2010 Formula One championship.

The process wasn't transparent, and there was plenty of room for pay-backs, and under the table deals. Weren't Olympic officials dragged through the streets over similar deals some years ago ?

And at this point, one can only assume that it was designed to benefit some high-ranking members of the FIA. Heck, we wouldn't be surprised to find out that Mosley retires as FIA boss only to become the principal of Manor Grand Prix for 2010.

Because the facts are.... We only know what we know about Manor Grand Prix because of what the FIA have revealed. What haven't they revealed about this team ?

We demand to see their full application, financials and all correspondence related to this application. If the FIA refuse, then it is clear that they have something to hide.

Max Mosley has accused one of Jenson Button's Grand Prix rivals of trying to fix an appeal court hearing and wreck the British driver's bid to win the world title.

The FIA President revealed in an explosive letter that he was secretly asked to ensure Britain's pace-setting Brawn racer was declared illegal in April's controversial "doublediffuser" hearing. The sport's second most powerful man said he was lobbied several times by a "manufacturer team". And he slammed the approaches as "wholly improper". The stunning revelation came as the sport continued to be rocked by the £1billion row over the future of the sport.

Mosley has criticised break-awateams as hypocrites, claiming they are calling for an independent governing body and president - but only if he does what they want. He said their tactics earlier in the season demonstrated their real agenda.
The hearing on April 14 came after Button's runaway start to the season in his revolutionary car with resounding victories at the opening two rounds in Australia and Malaysia.

Rivals had protested about the car - designed by legendary technical director Ross Brawn - because, they claimed, its rear aerodynamics broke the rules. And in the dock with the pace-setters stood Toyota and Williams. Had the sport's rule-makers stepped in, the Japanese car giant and Frank Williams's operation would, no doubt, have survived the blow.

But Button's title dream would have been irrevocably shattered. It could have led to the collapse of the organisation Brawn was trying to rescue from the ashes of Honda's withdrawal. At such a fragile stage of its re-birth the entire Brackleybased operation could have collapsed with the loss of nearly 500 jobs.

Banning of the revolutionary aerodynamic device would have removed Brawn's edge over its rivals. The revelation came in a letter obtained by Sunday Mirror Sport that Mosley sent to all members the sport's most powerful body, the World Motor Sport Council, on Friday.

Mosley refused to name the team involved.

Mosley is fuming at claims made by the F1 teams' organisation, FOTA, that he was forced out. He wrote: "We have heard a lot from FOTA about an independent court of appeal. Yet during the controversy over the 'double diffuser', a manufacturer team repeatedly lobbied me (wholly improperly) to intervene with the FIA Court of Appeal and have the double diffuser declared illegal.

"The FIA Court would never listen to such an approach but it shows that for the team in question, 'independent' means independent of the other teams and under the control of particular interests." Mosley said a manufacturer also threatened to quit Formula 1 when he started the "NCAP" safety revolution that forced car makers to step up road car safety and has saved thousands of lives.

He added: "When we started EuroNCAP, one of the major manufacturers threatened to quit Formula One if we did not abandon our activities. The FIA has to be free to confront the car industry whenever necessary."
