A batch of 323 unmanned aerial vehicles was handed over to the Ukrainian Armed Forces by Lviv region’s authorities as part of the Birds of Victory initiative, bringing the number of donated drones to 10,000.

"As part of the "Birds of Victory" project, we handed over the 10,000th drone to our defenders on the front line," Kozytskyi wrote.

The National Register of Records confirmed the largest recorded donation of UAVs for Ukraine’s defense forces coming from a single region.

Also on Independence Day, the 55th exchange of prisoners of war between Ukraine and Russia took place. 115 soldiers returned home. Azov Brigade commander reported that there were no defenders from the unit at the exchange.

On August 26, fifteen regions of Ukraine were targeted in a massive Russian attack, according to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described Russia’s morning attack on Ukraine as one of the largest combined strikes to date. He noted that “more than a hundred rockets of various types and about a hundred Shahed drones” were launched across the country, targeting critical civilian infrastructure.

The President also reported that restoration efforts are underway throughout the affected areas, and that Points of Invincibility will be established in some regions to support the recovery process.

Infrastructure facilities sustained damage, with one person injured. Private houses in four districts were affected, leading to power and water outages. Restoration efforts are currently underway. People are gathering in large numbers at the capital’s metro stations while waiting for the air raid to end.

Rivne region
A rocket struck an energy infrastructure facility in the Rivne region, causing a loss of electricity supply, according to Oleksandr Koval, head of the Rivne regional military administration.

“Windows in a residential building were damaged, but there were no casualties. Localities in the Rivne district experienced power outages. Relevant services are currently working to address the aftermath of the attack. Additionally, air defense forces intercepted aerial targets in the Rivne district. Preliminary reports indicate that there were no casualties from these engagements either,” Koval noted.

Lviv region
Energy facilities were attacked, resulting in power outages that affected parts of Lviv and the surrounding area.

Volyn region
The State Emergency Service has highlighted the aftermath of the Russian attack in Lutsk. According to the city council, two houses and an infrastructure facility in Kovel was hit.

The Mayor of Lutsk Polishchuk reported that five people were injured due to the attack, and one person killed.

Most districts of Lutsk are currently without water supply. Polishchuk stated that municipal workers would deploy to the affected areas to activate generators and restore service.

According to “Volynoblenergo,” the Russian attack has caused emergency power outages across the region.

Mykolaiv region
Three people were injured in the attacks.

Zaporizhzhia region
The Security Service of Ukraine has launched an investigation after the shelling by the Russian Federation in the Zaporizhia region on August 26. According to the police, the attack resulted in 1 man killed, and 1 woman injured. The Zaporizhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office also reported damage to civil infrastructure.

Dnipropetrovsk region
One person has been reported killed, and another injured. Additionally, about a dozen houses were damaged, with two completely destroyed. A fire broke out, destroying a country house and burning grass over an area of 50 square meters.

Sumy region
Numerous energy facilities were damaged.

Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions
Explosions were reported, resulting in power outages across the Western regions of Ukraine. Information is being verified by the officials.

Poltava region
An industrial facility was targeted, injuring five people.

Kharkiv region
In the Kharkiv region, the Russian military targeted an industrial facility in the Izyum district, as reported by the head of the regional military administration, Stepan Maselskyi. It has been confirmed that one person was killed and another was injured in the attack.

Odesa region
A massive missile attack on the Odesa region resulted in seven people being injured, including three children, among which is a 10-year-old boy. This was reported by Odesa Regional Military Administration head Oleg Kiper and Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov. Energy and civil infrastructure were struck, with rocket debris damaging private houses and numerous vehicles.

Zhytomyr Region
Critical infrastructure facilities and residential buildings were affected.

Cherkasy Region
Explosions occurred, air defense systems were deployed, and power outages were reported.

Vinnytsia region
In Vinnytsia, critical infrastructure objects were hit, according to the first deputy head of the Vinnytsya administration, Nataliia Zabolotna. The information regarding the casualties is currently being verified.

“To halt the brutal shelling of Ukrainian cities, it is crucial to eliminate the launch sites for Russian missiles. Ukraine requires long-range weapons and the consent of its partners to strike these Russian positions. We rely on the support of our allies and are determined to hold Russia accountable for its actions,” Shmyhal said in his morning statement.

War in Ukraine. Object flew over Poland. Army: It disappeared after 25 kilometers
- At 6:43 the object crossed the Polish border approximately at the height of the Ukrainian city of Chervonohrad . Objects that reached Chervonohrad were tracked by radar systems . " The air alert continues ! In the region, on the approaches to Kiev , air defense is active. Remain in shelters until the alert is lifted!" - said Sergiy Popko , head of the Kiev Military Administration.

Russia's massive attack on Ukraine. Many cities shelled

Attack on Ukrainian cities. Russian method used several times

The case against Zaytsev centred on a video he posted on his Telegram channel in which he and two other teenagers throw Molotov cocktails at a wall in an abandoned building, his grandmother Irina Zaytseva told Mediazona, adding that an unnamed witness for the prosecution who gave evidence to the court claimed that he had shot the video.

Zaytseva suggested that the unnamed witness was either a Federal Security Service (FSB) agent or “worked for them in some way”, claiming that “the provocateurs brought petrol and showed them how to do it, and Valera posted it.”

Another teenager featured in the video, 18-year-old Nikita Turlaev, was detained alongside Zaytsev in October, but his case is still being investigated, Mediazona wrote.

According to Zaytseva, Zaytsev partially admitted guilt, and received a lighter sentence than the 9 years initially requested by the prosecution.

Zaytsev, who lived in Solnechny, a small village in the Khabarovsk region, was detained in October while undergoing treatment for tuberculosis, according to human rights group OVD-Info. Guards at the pretrial detention centre where Zaytsev was held for 10 months told his relatives that his health was “fine”, without providing any further details, Zaytseva told Mediazona.

Zaytsev often expressed support for Ukraine at school, his classmates told Mediazona in October, telling them he had Ukrainian roots. His profile on VK, Russia’s largest social media platform, also featured a picture of him making a V sign with a photoshopped Kyiv Motherland Monument between his fingers, Mediazona wrote.

“Of course, Valera said a lot of wrong things about Ukraine and everything. But he didn’t do anything. He’s a child!” his grandmother said, adding that she saw FSB officers “sitting in the hall” while Zaytsev’s trial was taking place.

Zaytseva added that when he first arrived at the detention centre, Zaytsev had been unable to comprehend what was going on. “He kept asking me, ‘Grandma, why am I in jail? There are murderers here, drug addicts, thieves … What am I doing here?’”

Wagner Group claims to no longer be fighting in Ukraine
Wagner mercenaries are operating only in Belarus and Africa, and are not fighting alongside the Russian army in Ukraine, the Wagner Group claimed in a statement on Telegram on Aug. 26.

The statement, which was posted on a Wagner-affiliated Telegram channel, claimed that "there are no subordinates of the company either in Rosgvardia (Russia's National Guard), or in the ranks of the Russian Defense Ministry, or anywhere else."

Wagner fighters are not taking part in Russia's invasion of Ukraine "at this stage," the group said, claiming that "if the situation changes, it will be announced."

Wagner units were key to Russia's seizure of Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast in May 2023. Estimates suggest that nearly 20,000 mercenaries, many of whom were former convicts recruited from Russian prisoners in late 2022, died in the battle for the city.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the then-leader of Wagner, died in a mysterious plane crash in Russia on Aug. 23, 2023. The crash came two months after Prigozhin led Wagner troops in a short-lived rebellion against the Kremlin.

Wagner units were then reportedly incorporated into official Russian military structures, such as Rosgvardia. The Chechen Akhmat unit claimed in October 2023 that a "massive" number of Wagner mercenaries had joined its ranks.

According to a U.K. Defense Ministry intelligence report on Aug. 23, just 5,000 Wagner troops are currently deployed in Africa and Belarus, a fraction compared to its peak of 50,000 in 2023.

Ukraine's Foreign Ministry warned on Aug. 25 that Belarus is "concentrating a significant number" of weaponry and personnel at the border with Ukraine, including some former Wagner troops.

Minsk is Moscow's closest ally and hosts Russian troops and missiles, but is not currently directly involved in Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Waarom Kursk wel relevant is:
- 2000-3000 krijgsgevangenen waarvan een groot deel dienstplichtigen en tiktok soldaten zijn.
- Gezichtsverlies voor Putin inderdaad, en voor het hele Kremlin. Je kan dit ook aan de beelden van Putin zien. Die zit niet lekker in zijn vel op het ogenblik.
- Bijna evenveel grondgebied ingenomen als Rusland in 2023 en 2024 bij elkaar
- Rusland in paniek, wat je ook kan zien aan andere delen van het front, bij elke scheet vanuit Oekraïne wordt de paniek groter.
- Soldaten en materieel vanaf andere delen van het front naar Kursk
- Rusland moet opeens zijn hele grens met Oekraïne gaan beveiligen, waar zij gewoon de troepen en het materieel niet voor hebben. Tenzij zij een algehele mobilisatie gaan beginnen.
- Treinverkeer in problemen door heel Rusland heen
- Bevoorrading Belgorod in het geding
- Oekraine kan eindelijk eens aanvallen in plaats van alleen maar verdedigen. Zij zijn tenslotte al iets van een jaar alleen maar aan het verdedigen. Waarvoor een groot aantal troepen gewoon niet gemaakt zijn.
- Grote morele opkikker van troepen aan andere delen van het front voor Oekraine.
- Het is een soort van vakantie voor de troepen die nu in Kursk vechten. Daar het veel minder intensief is dan aan de Pokrovsk front bijvoorbeeld.
- Alles wat in kursk uitgeschakeld wordt kan niet ergens anders ingezet worden.

Er zijn vast nog wel andere argumenten te bedenken waarom het wel relevant is.

Ivan Rossomakhin had been serving a 14-year sentence for murder when he was first recruited by the Wagner mercenary group in 2022 to fight in Ukraine.

In April, he was sentenced to 22 years in prison for stabbing and raping his elderly neighbor upon returning to his hometown in the Kirov region. An appeals court later extended Rossomakhin’s sentence to 23 years.

According to Travmpunkt, which advocates for victims of violent crime, the head of the prison where Rossomakhin was incarcerated informed the victim’s family that he had been released under a law permitting convicted criminals to join the military. Despite his new sentence, the former Wagner fighter reportedly served less than six months before being sent back to the front lines.

The Telegram news channel Ostorozhno Novosti, which first broke the story of Rossomakhin’s latest military contract, said his case likely marks the first time “a recruited prisoner has evaded punishment by being deployed to a war zone for the second time.”

The practice of recruiting prisoners for the war in Ukraine was spearheaded by Wagner in 2022. However, Russia’s Defense Ministry took over prison recruitment early last year.

Under a law signed by President Vladimir Putin in March, convicted recruits have their remaining sentences suspended for the duration of their military service. They could even have their criminal records expunged if they receive state awards.

In 2023, Russian courts convicted a record number of soldiers for murder amid growing reports of violence committed by servicemen after returning from Ukraine.

Pavel Durov is a lot of things to a lot of people. Programming prodigy. Billionaire entrepreneur. Kremlin stooge. Free-speech fighter. Biological father to at least 100 kids.

Durov, the elusive founder of Telegram who was detained in France over the weekend, cuts the figure of a mysterious, globe-trotting tech bro with Mark Zuckerberg’s prodigiousness, Jack Dorsey’s bizarre lifestyle habits and Elon Musk’s libertarian streak – plus a similar obsession with pronatalism and fathering children. Durov said in July that he had fathered more than 100 children thanks to sperm donations he had made over the past 15 years.

Worth an estimated $9.15 billion according to Bloomberg and armed with an array of passports and residences, Durov has for a decade lived a life without borders, a man on an often-shirtless journey to secure the freedom of communication from the prying eyes of governments, democratically elected or otherwise.

Now, Durov’s legal trouble is drudging up an old debate, pitting Telegram’s end-to-end encryption, which keeps communications between users secure even from the company’s employees, against the security concerns of various governments and the European Union’s campaign to rein in big tech.

A pair of prodigies
Durov was born in 1984 in the Soviet Union but moved to Italy when he was a 4-year-old, the tech entrepreneur told right-wing pundit Tucker Carlson in a rare interview earlier this year. The family moved back to Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union, after Durov’s father received an offer to work at St. Petersburg State University.

Durov said he and his older brother, Nikolai, were math prodigies from an early age. The elder Durov was the bigger star when the duo were children. Durov said his brother went on Italian TV to solve cubic equations in real time as a child and won repeated gold medals at the International Math Olympiad. The younger Durov was the best student at his school and competed locally.

“We were both very passionate about coding and designing stuff,” Durov said.

He said that when the family returned to Russia, they brought back from Italy an IBM PC XT computer, meaning they were “in the early 90s, one of the few families in Russia who could actually teach ourselves how to program.”

Russia’s Zuck
Durov’s coding prowess and entrepreneurial spirit led him to build Vkontakte (VK), a social media site, in 2006, when he was a 21-year-old fresh out of university. VK quickly became known as the Facebook of Russia, and Durov the country’s answer to Mark Zuckerberg.

But Durov’s relationship with the Kremlin turned adversarial much quicker than Zuckerberg’s did with Washington.

When protesters began using VK to organize demonstrations in Kyiv against Ukraine’s pro-Russian president, Viktor Yanukovich, in 2013, Durov said the Kremlin asked the site to hand over private data of Ukrainian users.

“We decided to refuse, and that didn’t go too well with the Russian government,” Durov told Carlson.

That decision sealed Durov’s fate at the company. Durov would later resign as CEO, opening the door for people close to Russian President Vladimir Putin to take over. The entrepreneur sold all his shares for millions and then left Russia. Today, VK is under state control.

“For me, it was never about becoming rich. Everything in my life was about becoming free. To the extent that is possible, my mission in life is to allow other people to become free,” Durov said.

“I don’t want to take orders from anyone.”

‘All of them suck’
While Zuckerberg bought WhatsApp in his bid to build the social media empire now known as Meta, Durov chose to build his own messaging app despite an already crowded marketplace for such platforms.

He didn’t think anything out there was good enough.

“It doesn’t matter how many messaging apps are out there if all of them suck,” Durov told TechCrunch in 2015.

Durov said that his experience with the Kremlin was a key motivator in creating Telegram, which is now based in Dubai. He and his brother wanted to build something that would be free from the prying eyes of government.

The company’s strong end-to-end encryption and much-hyped commitment to privacy proved attractive to the hundreds of millions of users who flocked to Telegram – including, eventually, the terrorists who planned the Paris terror attacks in November 2015.

The revelation prompted the normally private Durov to go on a public relations blitz, conducting a bevy of interviews, including one with CNN, to assure a wary public that Telegram was not becoming WhatsApp for terrorists.

Telegram, according to Durov, was simply the most secure messaging platform on the market – and compromising by creating a back door for governments would undermine the app’s appeal and the company’s commitment to privacy.

“You cannot make it safe against criminals and open for governments,” Durov told CNN in 2016. “It’s either secure or not secure.”

Kremlin questions
Telegram’s refusal to budge on decryption put it at loggerheads with governments around the world – including Russia, at least initially.

Moscow in 2018 attempted to ban Telegram for refusing to supply Russian security services with decryption keys. Durov vowed to defy the ban.

Another showdown between the tech entrepreneur and the Kremlin appeared to be on the horizon, but nothing came of it. The ban was lifted in 2020.

In the years that followed, Telegram became one of the few foreign social media platforms operating in Russia without restrictions. It is now the preferred means of official communication for many officials in the Russian government.

Durov’s critics have long questioned whether Telegram could operate so freely in Russia without having made some sort of concession to the Kremlin, allegations Durov has repeatedly batted down – often pointing to his spat in the early 2010s that led him to leave Russia.

Before he was detained in Paris, Durov was in Azerbaijan at the same time as Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was in the country on an official two-day visit. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the two did not meet.

And though Durov has publicly turned his back on Russia, the government was quick to begin working on Durov’s behalf after his detention. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the Russian Embassy in Paris “immediately got down to work” after getting word of Durov’s legal troubles.

The issue of Telegram’s abuse by money launderers, drug traffickers and people spreading pedophilia has continued to unsettle Western governments. Durov’s detention in France was connected to a warrant related to Telegram’s lack of moderation, according to CNN-affiliate BFMTV.

Telegram responded in a statement that “it is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform.” The statement added that Telegram abides by EU laws and that Durov had nothing to hide.

Ukrainian officials are preparing to present a list of long-range targets in Russia to top U.S. national security officials that they think Kyiv’s military can hit if Washington were to lift its restrictions on U.S. weapons.

Ukraine is using the list as a last-ditch effort to convince Washington to lift the restrictions on U.S. weapons being used inside Russia. While Ukraine has previously provided the U.S. some of its potential targets in Russia, this list is supposed to be more tailored.

Ukraine’s defense minister, Rustem Umerov, and Andriy Yermak, senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will be in D.C. this week and plan to present the list to the administration during their discussions, according to three people familiar with Ukraine’s efforts.

The U.S. has said for months that lifting the restrictions won’t make a strategic difference in the war as Russia has moved its most important targets, including aircraft, back from the border and out of reach.

But Kyiv has identified several high-value targets that it can reach with U.S.-provided missiles, the people said. It hopes the list will bolster its campaign to convince President Joe Biden to change his mind.

“There should be no restrictions on the range of weapons for Ukraine, while terrorists have no such restrictions,” Zelenskyy said in a statement Monday. “Defenders of life should face no restrictions on weapons.”

The visit by Umerov and Yermak comes as Ukraine continues to press its incursion into the Russian border region of Kursk and grapples with the aftermath of Moscow’s massive missile attack on its energy grid.

Ukrainian officials have long lobbied the Biden administration to lift the restrictions on U.S. weapons so its military can more easily launch offensives inside Russia and push Russian forces back from the border. The administration has said since the beginning of the war it worries lifting the restrictions could provoke Russia to launch even more aggressive assaults on Ukraine.

While escalation is still a concern, the Biden administration has more recently been stressing its belief that there is little tactical advantage, given Russia moving assets out of range. The administration also assesses that Ukraine does not have enough Army Tactical Missile Systems — the long-range missiles it wants to use — to strike the high-value targets in Russia. Kyiv is using many of those missiles in their offensives inside Crimea — a battle the Biden administration assesses is going well for Ukraine. And the U.S. has a limited stockpile of ATACMs it can draw on to send Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials and lawmakers insist that the lifting of all restrictions is imperative to the country’s war effort, claiming it would give its military greater freedom to take the fight to Russia inside its own borders.

It is not clear exactly when Umerov and Yermak will arrive in Washington or what other meetings they plan to have while in the United States. On previous such trips, the Ukrainian officials have met with national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.

In a briefing with reporters Monday, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said there were “no changes” to U.S. policy with respect to the restrictions.

“This is not a new desire by President Zelenskyy by any stretch,” he said. “But as I’ve said many, many times, we’ll keep the conversations with the Ukrainians going, but we’re going to keep them private.”

Some Ukrainian lawmakers and officials say they’ve seen signs that some in the Biden administration are considering lifting the restrictions in the coming days. A Democratic lawmaker with knowledge of the conversations also said the administration was considering Kyiv’s request. The lawmaker was granted anonymity to speak more freely about the administration’s thinking.

The White House has not said that it is considering any plan to change its policy.

Zelenskyy and Biden spoke by phone on Friday, but did not specifically discuss the request to lift the restrictions, according to a U.S. official briefed on the call. The person was also granted anonymity to speak about sensitive negotiations.

But the two leaders did speak more broadly about Kyiv’s request that the U.S. send additional long-range weapons. They also spoke about Russia’s advances in Pokrovsk and Ukraine’s strategy for countering Moscow there while simultaneously trying to advance in Kursk.

Following the call, Biden announced a new $125 million military assistance package for Kyiv. On the same day, the U.S. also announced a slew of additional sanctions on Russia.

Kyiv and Washington are in talks for Biden and Zelenskyy to meet in-person at the U.N. General Assembly in New York next month, the U.S. official said.

“They practically detained the head of communication of the Russian army,” Russian military blogger channel Povernutie na Z Voine said in a Telegram statement.

The blog site Dva Mayora said that Russian specialists are working on an alternative to Telegram, but that the Russian army's Main Communications Directorate has "not shown any real interest" in getting such a system to Russian troops. The site said Durov's arrest may actually speed up the development of an independent comms system.

Alarmed Russian policymakers are calling for Durov's release.

“[Durov’s] arrest may have political grounds and be a tool for gaining access to the personal information of Telegram users," the Deputy Speaker of the Russian Duma Vladislav Davankov said in a Telegram statement. "This cannot be allowed. If the French authorities refuse to release Pavel Durov from custody, I propose making every effort to move him to the UAE or the Russian Federation. With his consent, of course."

Their worry is that Durov may hand over encryption keys to the French authorities, allowing access to the platform and any communications that users thought was encrypted.

French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that the arrest of Durov was "in no way a political decision."

The Russian embassy has demanded that it get access to Durov, but the Kremlin has so far not issued a statement on the arrest.

"Before saying anything, we should wait for the situation to become clearer," said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

However, officials and law enforcement agencies were instructed to clear all their communication from Telegram, the pro-Kremlin channel Baza reported.

"Everyone who is used to using the platform for sensitive conversations/conversations should delete those conversations right now and not do it again," Kremlin propagandist Margarita Simonyan said in a Telegram post. "Durov has been shut down to get the keys. And he's going to give them."

Telegram's dark side
Telegram's lack of moderation has made it a haven for illicit gun and drug trafficking in the West, and a tool of communication, recruitment of saboteurs and propaganda in the East, Nazar Tokar, head of Kremlingram, an investigative group of activists studying Telegram’s security and its potential ties to the Kremlin, told POLITICO.

“Russians do everything via Telegram. They are recruiting agents and people for counter-activities. Today in Ukraine, a popular campaign is to recruit people who would burn Ukrainian military cars. And it is quite successful. They coordinate their military efforts using it,” Tokar said.

Telegram denied accusations that it was allowing dangerous content, saying it abides by EU laws, including the Digital Services Act. It insisted its moderation meets industry standards and is constantly improving.

“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner is responsible for abuse of that platform. Almost a billion users globally use Telegram as a means of communication and as a source of vital information,” Telegram said in a statement.

Tokar argues that Telegram has become so popular not just because it is convenient and fast, as well as having its own cryptocurrency and many free functions, but because it allows access to a seamy underworld of illicit activities.

“You just install the free app and get easy access to buying guns, drugs, explicit and violent content ... anything. It is all available simply by searching. And this is not so easily available anywhere in other messengers,” Tokar said.

Despite the platform being used by the Russian military, Telegram denies any ties to the Russian government, adding that it is “essential for freedom of speech.”

While the Kremlin has clamped down on most other social media platforms, Telegram has not been banned or limited, Tokar said. That's despite Durov saying he fled Russia in 2014 after the Kremlin demanded access to data on his previous social media company Vkontakte about Ukrainian pro-democracy protesters who took part in the country's 2014 revolution.

Ukraine's military largely uses the Signal platform for its communications, but most government agencies, including the president's office, have Telegram channels. It is also widely used for personal messages and blogs by Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.

Durov's arrest has revived a heated discussion in Ukraine about whether Kyiv should ban the platform, Tokar said.

But Telegram is much more important to Russia than to Ukraine.

“I think that the Russians are panicking because they are trying to predict possible outcomes for their essential communications tool and are trying to protect themselves and remove information from there. But everything will depend on the French government and the courts — whether they will imprison Durov, or come to an agreement and release him and he in return will provide them with some information — we do not know yet,” Tokar said.

The Russian Embassy in Germany has dismissed allegations that it was behind the plans as "absurd and ridiculous". The Norwegian intelligence agencies have also highlighted what they term as the potential threat of Russian sabotage.

"When we are talking about sabotage today, we are talking about Russia," Beate Gangaas, the head of Norway's counterintelligence agency PST, which organised the meeting on the sidelines of the ONS energy conference, told Reuters.

Norwegian intelligence agencies said earlier this year that Russia "may find it prudent" to carry out physical or digital acts of sabotage against targets in Norway, with its petroleum sector being the prime target.

After Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Norway, a NATO member country that shares a border with Russia in the Arctic, has become Europe's largest supplier of natural gas, which is delivered via a vast subsea pipeline system.

"Russia is in a lasting confrontation with the West, and it's a regime that is willing to take more risk," Vice Admiral Nils Andreas Stensoenes, the head of Norwegian Intelligence Service, told an open-door meeting earlier on Monday.

"So, even though we haven't seen any concrete evidence on plans to do anything in Norway, it's wise to be prudent and increase the level of security," he added.

An operator can remotely operate the BoarTAC multi-purpose vehicle to deliver ammunition and supplies.

This multifunctional platform, with special mounts installed, is also capable of evacuating the wounded. In addition, it can be used to carry out mine clearance with attachments or, vice versa, to set up minefields.

The Defense Ministry emphasized that the BoarTAC ground robotic system can also become a mobile firearm, as it is possible to integrate remotely controlled combat modules equipped with grenade launchers or machine guns. It is also stated that the domestic transporter can be used as a kamikaze drone.

“Due to its wide tracks with large tracks and a protective bumper, the robot can overcome off-road terrain, ditches, and shallow water obstacles,” the statement reads.

At the same time, the Ukrainian-made transporter can carry about 200 kg of cargo or pull a trailer of similar weight.

A Russian missile hit a four-storey hotel in the city of Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine at midnight, partially destroying it, according to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. It added that two people were killed and five others were injured in the attack, and that the search for two people believed to be trapped in the rubble was ongoing.

Three people were killed and five more were injured in Russian attacks on the southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, Governor Ivan Fyodorov wrote on Telegram, adding that the region had sustained some 208 airstrikes on 14 population centres over the course of the day.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) also launched a number of drone strikes on Russian territory overnight, with the Russian Defence Ministry reporting on Tuesday that three drones had been shot down over the southwestern Belgorod region, and two over the neighbouring Kursk region.

Nevertheless, drones injured five people in two villages in the Belgorod region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram late on Monday, adding that the border village of Vyazovoye was to be evacuated, the fourth such evacuation announced in the region in the last week. Gladkov said affected residents would be given one-off payments of 15,000 rubles (¤147).

The neighbouring Kursk region, where the AFU began an incursion on 6 August, issued several air raid warnings overnight, acting Governor Alexey Smirnov said, while Igor Kutsak, the mayor of the regional capital Kursk, reported that a drone strike on the city had been repelled.

Aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare equipment, and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defense Forces were deployed to repel the Russian attack in most regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Zhytomyr, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kirovohrad regions.

On June 20, 2024, Yermak announced that preparations for the second Peace Summit are ongoing, and it is already known about Russia's plans to disrupt the event.

On the same day, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba announced that the second Summit could be held in one of the countries of the Global South.

On July 10, Bloomberg reported that Ukraine wants to convene a second summit with the participation of Russia before the presidential elections in the USA where the voting will take place in November.

Horváth could face up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $1 million for violating the Export Control Reform Act.

The soldiers of the 425th Assault Battalion Skala stormed the Russian invaders’ positions on the outskirts of Toretsk in the Donetsk region.

The military published a video of their combat work in a Telegram.

The footage from the Ukrainian drone captures the assault group of defenders first driving an M113 tracked armored personnel carrier (APC) through the streets of the settlement while houses are burning from Russian shelling.

The soldiers of the 425th Assault Battalion Skala then boarded an M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) and drove toward the Russian positions.

With the fire support of an infantry fighting vehicle, the Ukrainian assault group landed, stormed, and cleared the territory where the invaders were trying to gain a foothold.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, over the past day, Russian invaders carried out 15 attacks in the Toretsk sector near Toretsk and New York.

Previously, the assault group of the 425th Assault Battalion Skala of Operational Command East captured 16 Russian soldiers in New York, Donetsk region.

Ukrainian servicemen captured 16 Russian servicemen of the 9th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade. Before being deployed to the brigade, it was the 9th Separate Marine Regiment of the so-called “People’s Militia” of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic.”

Vladislav Akimov, a captured Russian lieutenant, said that the group’s task was to cross one of the intersections in the city area, which was controlled by a Ukrainian machine gun.

Defense Visual Information Distribution Service of the US Department of Defense reported on this news.

Engineers from the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron of the U.S. Air Force upgraded the future Ukrainian aircraft. This center of excellence for electronic warfare is dedicated to improving the capabilities and survivability of U.S. aircraft.

Together with Danish and Norwegian experts, the Americans reprogrammed electronic warfare systems on F-16 fighters from Denmark and the Netherlands.

Engineers from the 68th Squadron said that the electronic warfare subsystems needed to be updated so that the new aircraft could effectively integrate into the Ukrainian air force and be effective against new Russian threats.

The work on the aviation systems proved to be difficult due to the tight deadlines and the modification of a system that is not in service with the United States.

The systems are not named, but it is clear that Danish and Dutch aircraft were equipped with the AN/ALQ-131 and AN/ALQ-10 systems (the Danish variant of the AN/ALQ-162). In particular, the AN/ALQ-162 systems were integrated into the ECIPS pylons with which the first Dutch F-16s arrived in Ukraine.

These systems detect the radiation and operation of enemy radar systems, such as anti-aircraft missiles, aircraft radars, and air defense systems, and prevent them from detecting and targeting aircraft.

The 68th Squadron assembled a special team of experienced experts to accomplish the difficult task. Based on the data provided by Denmark and Norway, the engineers studied the system design and developed approaches for its reprogramming. Together with their partners, the specialists tested the updated system’s operation.

“This is not our standard operating procedure. The fact that the team was able to figure out the system in two weeks, go in the country with a partner to develop the best-ever mission data file is unheard of and is thanks to the talent here in the squadron and the wing,” the 68th EWS director noted.

The squadron commander noted that F-16s with reprogrammed electronic warfare systems alone will not provide air dominance but will provide a situational advantage to pilots in achieving objectives that can ensure impact and success on the battlefield.

The US Department also announced that Ukraine is an official customer of the 68th Squadron under the FMS program. This will allow the unit to provide support, timely updates, and modernization of electronic warfare systems based on experience and recommendations from the Ukrainian military.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has opened a criminal case into two more foreign journalists who reported from Ukrainian-controlled areas of Russia’s southwestern Kursk region, state-owned Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Tuesday.

The FSB is investigating Nick Connolly, a journalist with German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle, and Ukrainian news channel 1+1 reporter Natalya Nahorna for illegally entering Russia and “making video recordings in the area of Sudzha”, a town captured by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) as part of an ongoing incursion into Russian territory.

At least seven foreign journalists have been charged with illegally crossing Russia’s border to film dispatches about the AFU incursion.

Journalists Stefani Battistini and Simona Traini, from Italian television channel Rai 1, were the first to be investigated by the FSB after reporting directly from Sudzha and speaking to locals. Rai CEO Roberto Sergio said in a statement shortly before the criminal case was opened that Battistini and Traini would return to Italy for their “safety and personal protection”.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry summoned Italy’s Ambassador to Moscow, Cecilia Piccioni, on 16 August, accusing the journalists of “grossly violating Russian law and the basic rules of journalistic ethics”.

On Thursday, the FSB also opened criminal cases against CNN reporter Nick Paton Walsh and Ukrainian journalists Olesya Borovik and Diana Butsko for illegally crossing Russia’s border. All three reporters were placed on Russia’s wanted list.

The Foreign Ministry also summoned US Chargé d’Affaires Stephanie Holmes on 20 August “to lodge a strong protest” following the publication of a Washington Post article for which journalists crossed into Russia accompanied by AFU soldiers, though no criminal case has been opened yet.

Since invading Ukraine in 2022, Putin has repeatedly warned of the risk of a much broader war involving the world's biggest nuclear powers, though he has said Russia does not want a conflict with the U.S.-led NATO alliance.

"We are now confirming once again that playing with fire - and they are like small children playing with matches - is a very dangerous thing for grown-up uncles and aunts who are entrusted with nuclear weapons in one or another Western country," Lavrov told reporters in Moscow.

"Americans unequivocally associate conversations about Third World War as something that, God forbid, if it happens, will affect Europe exclusively," Lavrov said.

Lavrov added that Russia was "clarifying" its nuclear doctrine.

Russia's 2020 nuclear doctrine sets out when its president would consider using a nuclear weapon: broadly as a response to an attack using nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction or conventional weapons "when the very existence of the state is put under threat".

RUSSIA'S RESPONSE
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said earlier this month that the assault on Russia's Kursk region showed that Kremlin threats of retaliation were a bluff.

Zelenskiy said Ukraine, because of the restrictions imposed by allies, could not use the weapons at its disposal to hit some Russian military targets. He urged allies to be bolder in their decisions about how to help Kyiv in the war.

Russia has said that Western weaponry, including British tanks and U.S. rocket systems, have been used by Ukraine in Kursk. Kyiv has confirmed using U.S. HIMARS missiles to take out bridges in Kursk.

Washington says it was not informed about Ukraine's plans ahead of the surprise incursion into Kursk. The United States has also said it did not take any part in the operation.

Putin's foreign intelligence chief, Sergei Naryshkin, said on Tuesday that Moscow did not believe Western assertions that it had nothing to do with the Kursk attack. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the involvement of the United States was "an obvious fact".

The New York Times reported that the United States and Britain provided Ukraine with satellite imagery and other information about the Kursk region in the days after the Ukrainian attack.

The Times said that the intelligence was aimed at helping Ukraine keep better track of Russian reinforcements.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, stated this.

“As of today, we continue to make progress. As of today, we have taken control of 1,294 square kilometers of territory and 100 settlements located on this territory. We have also significantly replenished the exchange fund. Ukrainian troops have captured 594 servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces in this sector so far,” Syrskyi reported.

He noted that the start of the operation was dictated by the intention to stop the constant shelling of the Sumy region from the territory of the Kursk region.

By early August, Russia had concentrated a significant number of its troops in the border area and was planning an offensive. Given this, it was decided to act proactively and create a security zone, launching its own offensive on August 6.

For its part, the enemy is trying to counter the advance of the Ukrainian Defense Forces in the Kursk region. Russia is pulling its troops from other areas and has already amassed a group of about 30,000 people, and this number is growing.

The Commander-in-Chief stated that one of the objectives of the offensive in the Kursk region was to divert significant enemy forces from other areas. First of all, from Pokrovske and Kurakhove.

“Despite this, the enemy is trying not to withdraw units from other areas. On the contrary, he is increasing his efforts in the Pokrovsk sector. We are also concentrating our main forces and means in this area,” he noted.

Syrskyi said that the situation in the Pokrovsk sector is currently quite complex. In recent weeks, an average of more than 50 military clashes have been taking place daily. The enemy is using its advantage in manpower, weapons, and military equipment. However, in general, offensive actions are carried out by infantry assault groups.

“The enemy is trying to seize a section of the Kostiantynivka – Pokrovsk highway, intending to disrupt the logistics of the Defense Forces,” he said.

However, he noted that the advance comes at a high price. The enemy loses up to 300 soldiers on average every day.

To continue operating in this area, Russia started to transfer its units to the Kursk region, even from the Kaliningrad region.

Ukrainian Marines Train with New Bohdana 155mm Self-Propelled Artillery

The artillery units of the Marines have been equipped with Ukrainian-made Bohdana self-propelled guns.

The press service of the 32nd Separate Artillery Brigade published a photo with these 155mm self-propelled guns.

The images show the military personnel training with these domestic artillery systems at a training ground.

In these exercises, artillery crews are preparing to conduct combat missions aimed at destroying enemy targets.

To achieve this, they practice deploying to a firing position, aiming at a target, and quickly folding and moving to another position.

Such skills are necessary for the crew of the self-propelled artillery system, in particular, to avoid enemy counter-battery warfare and safely leave the area of the combat mission.

Ukraine’s Bohdana 155mm wheeled self-propelled guns are appearing more frequently in photos and videos of military units of the Defense Forces.

According to an official statement by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in May 2024, the Ukrainian defense industry reached the production rate of 10 Bohdan self-propelled guns per month.

“The state enters into serious, long-term contracts with our enterprises, which provide predictability, the ability to recruit people and attract investment. This month, our industry is producing 10 Bohdana guns for the first time, and in May and beyond,” President Zelensky said on April 18.

It is worth noting that the latest versions of the 2S22 Bohdana 155mm wheeled howitzers come with a powered rammer.

The chassis is currently based on the Tatra Phoenix 8×8 or Tatra T815 trucks with Czech Puma L2 Long armored cabs, which are donated in Ukraine.

Ukraine is also developing a towed howitzer based on the artillery unit of the Bohdana self-propelled artillery system. Work on such a system first became known in November last year.

For most of Friday, the air base of the Western defense alliance in North Rhine-Westphalia instated the second-highest security level.

Upon receiving the information, all non-essential personnel were sent home to minimize the potential risk, but air traffic was not disrupted and continued to operate normally. Since there were no incidents at the air base, the security level was reduced to the previous level on Friday afternoon.

About 1,600 people work at the airfield, which stations special aircraft currently used primarily to monitor airspace in NATO’s eastern theater, a spokesperson for the defense alliance said. The base's radar is capable of locating and identifying other aircraft at a range of more than 400 kilometers.

The alert level rise follows a series of recent sabotage threats in Germany. Two weeks ago, the Geilenkirchen base and another military base near Cologne airport were temporarily sealed off as authorities investigated a possible water-supply sabotage. The Cologne-Wahn airbase is a major transportation hub for Ukrainian soldiers trained in Germany.

Earlier, in June, Russian saboteurs set fire to a metal factory belonging to the defense contractor Diehl in Berlin. According to Western security officials, the saboteurs’ goal was to disrupt shipments of critical weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

Come Back Alive Foundation Equips Four Ukrainian Units to Counter Russian Drone

The Come Back Alive Foundation has provided four more units with equipment that will help them shoot down Russian drones.

The Foundation has stated that the units received transport, modernized FPV drones, and other equipment for their crews.

The equipment is being transferred as part of the ‘Dronefall’ project. Its goal is to shoot down a thousand Russian reconnaissance UAVs by upgraded FPV drones.

Marines, Special Operations Forces, and air defense units received this equipment.

“UAH 9,358,024 of your contributions made it possible to purchase 6 vehicles for the 38th Separate Marine Brigade, Special Operations Forces and Air Defense units,” the foundation stated.

The Come Back Alive also provided the marines of the 38th Brigade with fifty FPV drones, components for them, and laptops.

Due to these contributions, the 126th Territorial Defense Brigade, received walkie-talkies, FPV remotes, a generator, a tablet, a laptop, Starlink, a monitor, etc.

“So your donations are already working to make sure that Orlan, ZALA, Supercam and other enemy unmanned aerial vehicles do not fall into the Ukrainian sky,” the Foundation added.

Every day, dozens of Russian reconnaissance drones operate in the skies over Ukraine, especially near the front line and right on the front line.

They collect and transmit information to the enemy about our Defense Forces, movement and number of military and equipment, location of critical infrastructure, etc.

Russia Installs Tor-M2KM SAM on Sovetsk Corvette

The Russian Baltic Fleet has equipped the Sovetsk corvette with a Tor-M2KM anti-aircraft system module.

The warship was photographed in the port of Kronstadt.

The Sovetsk, as well as the first ship of the Mytishchi series, were developed as part of the original 22800 project and did not receive specialized anti-aircraft weapons. On these ships, air defense tasks were assigned to AK-630M artillery pieces.

A full-fledged anti-aircraft system was first installed on the Karakurt-class corvettes starting with the third ship in the series, integrating the ship’s version of the Pantsir-ME air defense system.

Probably, based on the experience of this war, in particular in the Black Sea scene, the Russian Navy decided to strengthen the capabilities of these ships and installed an autonomous combat module 9M331MKM of the Tor-M2KM complex on the aft superstructure.

Both AK-630M artillery systems, which can reinforce SAM fire and operate against surface targets, were left behind and retained their combat capability during the installation of the module.

The Tor-M2KM is a modular version of the Tor-M2 system that has been adapted to be deployed on any type of chassis, or on ship decks and stationary platforms.

The autonomous combat module of this version is armed with four 9M331 anti-aircraft guided missiles capable of intercepting air targets at a distance of up to 15 kilometers.

Previously, the Russian military also “modernized” the Pavel Derzhavin and Vasily Bykov patrol ships of Project 22160, which were used in the Black Sea.

These sjips, like the aforementioned Sovetsk, did not have proper air defense weapons as part of their project and relied only on the AK-176MA artillery system. An additional SAM was installed on the helicopter pad at the stern of the ship.

Similarly, the Russians retrofitted the Admiral Grigorovich frigate.

In order to protect the Black Sea Fleet from attacks by Ukrainian kamikaze drones, the Russian Navy decided in July to withdraw its ships, including two Karakurt-project corvettes, to the Caspian Sea.

Deputy Minister of National Defense Cezary Tomczyk said that the decision to shoot down an unidentified object over Poland is made by the operational commander, Gen. Maciej Klisz. According to information provided by the army, the object was not shot down because - although it was detected by radar - no visual contact was made with it.

- This helplessness terrifies me and I wonder deeply whether these are still technical problems - because after all, this air defense system that we are talking about has not been fully completed - or legal problems; whether the procedures really allow for destroying air attack assets that are coming from Ukraine - said Gen. The trial of two Russians, members of the Wagner Group, is scheduled to begin in the District Court in Kraków on September 9. The men are accused of participating in an international armed association and working for a foreign intelligence agency.

The indictment was filed in June by the prosecutor of the Małopolska province division for combating organized crime.

Two citizens of the Russian Federation - Alexey T. and Andrey G. - were accused of acting for the benefit of foreign intelligence and of participating in an international armed association aimed at committing terrorist crimes .

As the press office of the District Court in Kraków informed PAP, the first hearing date has been set for September 9 .

They were putting up recruitment stickers
According to the prosecutor's findings, the accused were recruiting in Poland for a military mercenary service prohibited by international law, known as the Wagner Group .

"For this purpose , they posted at least several hundred so-called recruitment stickers in Krakow and Warsaw , which enabled direct contact with other people responsible for recruitment and organization," the National Prosecutor's Office reported.

The defendants were also charged with acting for the intelligence service of the Russian Federation (Foreign Intelligence Service) by waging so-called hybrid warfare , including propaganda activities aimed at destabilizing the political situation in Poland.

The men were detained by Internal Security Agency officers in August 2023 in Warsaw. They face up to 10 years in prison.

Ukraine may face $15 billion budget gap next year, PM Shmyhal says
Ukraine's budget deficit for 2025 will be $35 billion, but assistance from partners will cover roughly $20 billion, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Aug. 27.

Speaking at the "Ukraine 2024. Independence" forum, Shmyhal clarified that the $20 billion will be covered by the EU's Ukraine Facility program and by assistance from the International Monetary Fund.

"We still have these $15 billion not yet covered by agreements with our partners," the prime minister said.

"Therefore, we understand that we will have to look for them either in our domestic sources, or take some of the $50 billion from the frozen Russian assets, or keep working on how our partners can support us with this missing amount," Shmyhal said.

The Group of Seven (G7) agreed to provide Ukraine with a loan of $50 billion by the end of this year that would be covered by the proceeds of some $300 billion in Russian assets frozen on G7 members' accounts.

Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk said that the parliament and the government are discussing additional budget revenues, saying that there "will be difficult decisions.

Shmyhal presented a four-step plan his government plans to implement to fill the gap in the country’s budget for the next year.

"Now we have a critical need to find additional funds for our defense and our defense capability. This is hundreds of billions of hryvnias. Amendments to the budget for more than Hr 500 billion (over $12 billion) this year have been submitted to the parliament.

"This is what we need to pay the salaries of our military, whose number is growing, to purchase the appropriate military equipment to finance the Ukrainian defense industry. To raise these funds, we are focusing on four steps," he said.

According to the prime minister, the first step is to increase domestic borrowing. He noted that the Ukrainian market and banks are ready for this.

Shmyhal added that negotiations with the National Bank to increase domestic borrowing had taken place, so the government sees this as a potential opportunity by the end of this year.

"We are also implementing the 'fight or work' principle, which introduces a number of measures that will bring the labor market out of the shadows. These are important points for increasing the number of jobs, for raising average wages in industries, and for filling our budget," he said.

The government will also increase the corporate income tax rate for banks. In addition, it plans to expand the basis for the military tax and increase the military tax rates in some instances.

The prime minister also said that in 2025, Ukraine’s budget deficit will be slightly lower than in 2024. This year, the total gap in the country's budget was $38 billion.

On Aug. 11, Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko said that delays in U.S. aid have contributed to Ukraine’s soaring budget deficit in 2024.

As reported by Ukrinform, Russia launched at least 127 missiles and 109 Shahed combat drones on Ukraine on August 26.

According to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, 15 regions were affected by the attack. Damage to energy facilities was reported.

A recent video circulating online shows a Russian soldier testing an unconventional method to safeguard against landmines by attaching an empty 5-liter plastic bottle to his boot.

Believe in Kevlar and Plastic
According to Tech the soldier, like others who have tried similar tactics, hoped that this makeshift solution would somehow absorb the impact of an anti-personnel mine. However, the results were as disastrous as expected.

The idea behind this improvised defense is rooted in the belief, shared among some Russian troops, that everyday items like sneakers, Kevlar inserts, or even plastic bottles can offer protection against the deadly power of landmines.

But the test revealed the harsh reality—when the mine exploded, the plastic bottle provided no protection whatsoever. The explosion would likely cause the soldier to lose a limb, with the added danger of plastic fragments turning into additional shrapnel.

Russian Soldiers Missing Equipment
This desperate measure show the extreme conditions Russian soldiers face, often lacking adequate protective gear. The use of such makeshift solutions is inspired by the creativity born out of necessity.

The soldier's experiment is a clear indication of the severe limitations and risks faced by infantrymen who are trying to survive with minimal resources.

In contrast, modern military technology offers much more reliable protection. Armored vehicles, for example, are designed with V-shaped hulls that deflect the blast energy away from the vehicle, significantly increasing the chances of survival for those inside.

Unfortunately, for individual soldiers, such advanced protection is not an option. They must rely on traditional methods like metal detectors, probing the ground with knives, and specialized demining equipment.

The explosion at Gazprom Neft's Omsk refinery, Russia's largest oil refinery, disabled the CDU-11 primary refining unit.

The CDU-11 is the most productive unit at the plant. The second unit of this type, CDU-10, had already been out of operation due to a fire in early August. Each unit has a capacity of around 8.6 million tonnes of oil per year.

The primary refining units separate oil into key fractions: petrol, kerosene, and diesel.

In 2023, the Omsk oil refinery processed 21.28 million tonnes of oil, producing 5.07 million tonnes of petrol (11.5% of Russia's production), 8.1 million tonnes of diesel fuel (9.2%), and 1.63 million tonnes of jet fuel (15%).

Russian authorities say seven people were taken to hospital as a result of the explosion, one of whom is in a critical condition.

Background:
• In August, Russian oil refineries increased fuel oil exports to the highest level in a year.

On F-16 aircraft:
• On August 26, Ukraine used F-16s to repel a massive air attack. The jets performed well, helping to shoot down several missiles.

On Polish Assistance:

With 90% of the planes out of reach, striking deep inside Russia with ATACMS makes little strategic sense, the official claimed.

U.S. policy currently prohibits Ukraine from using American-supplied weapons to attack targets deep within Russian territory. Kyiv has lobbied Washington to lift these restrictions and allow Ukrainian forces to strike airbases and other military targets beyond the border zone.

A photo of the armored vehicle was posted on the Russian Telegram channel “Busandall,” which stated that the Chinese armored vehicle was on the balance sheet of the Moscow metro.

The armored vehicle, model Dongfeng EQ2091XFB, featured the logo of the Moscow subway and was painted black.

At the same time, the armored vehicle does not have the Chinese automobile company Dongfeng Motor logo.

The vehicle was transferred to Russia with an armored turret, usually equipped with a heavy machine gun.

The Dongfeng EQ2091XFB is based on the Warrior MS600 SUV: both vehicles have an identical wheelbase (3700 mm), and the body length is almost the same – about six meters.

In terms of cross-country ability, the armored vehicle is significantly superior to other models: it is able to overcome water obstacles up to 1.2 meters deep, with a ground clearance of 305 mm. The vehicle can accommodate up to 10 people.

The work on the aviation systems proved to be difficult due to the tight deadlines and the modification of a system that is not in service with the United States.

The systems are not named, but it is clear that Danish and Dutch aircraft were equipped with the AN/ALQ-131 and AN/ALQ-10 systems (the Danish variant of the AN/ALQ-162). In particular, the AN/ALQ-162 systems were integrated into the ECIPS pylons with which the first Dutch F-16s arrived in Ukraine.

These systems detect the radiation and operation of enemy radar systems, such as anti-aircraft missiles, aircraft radars, and air defense systems, and prevent them from detecting and targeting aircraft.

The 68th Squadron assembled a special team of experienced experts to accomplish the difficult task. Based on the data provided by Denmark and Norway, the engineers studied the system design and developed approaches for its reprogramming. Together with their partners, the specialists tested the updated system’s operation.

“This is not our standard operating procedure. The fact that the team was able to figure out the system in two weeks, go in the country with a partner to develop the best-ever mission data file is unheard of and is thanks to the talent here in the squadron and the wing,” the 68th EWS director noted.

The squadron commander noted that F-16s with reprogrammed electronic warfare systems alone will not provide air dominance but will provide a situational advantage to pilots in achieving objectives that can ensure impact and success on the battlefield.

The US Department also announced that Ukraine is an official customer of the 68th Squadron under the FMS program. This will allow the unit to provide support, timely updates, and modernization of electronic warfare systems based on experience and recommendations from the Ukrainian military.

A Russian soldier is set to join the frontlines in Ukraine after signing a military contract for early release from prison.
Stanislav Ionkin was serving a 20-year prison sentence for the murder of 15 people in a fire when he was offered an early release. In exchange for his freedom, he would join the frontline in the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

According to the Russian state-owned news agency TASS, Ionkin was convicted in March for his role in a tragic fire at the Poligon nightclub in Kostroma, central Russia.

The incident occurred on November 5, 2022, when Ionkin fired a flare gun multiple times inside the Poligon nightclub following a dispute with other partygoers. The flares which quickly ignited a blaze in the enclosed space, rapidly engulfing the entire venue. The fire claimed the lives of 15 people and left dozens more injured.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the nightclub did not meet legal fire safety standards.

The 23-year-old former soldier was found guilty of murder, intentionally causing bodily harm, destruction of property, and hooliganism, and was sentenced to 20 years in a maximum-security penal colony.

Despite the severity of his crimes, Ionkin has now signed a contract with the Russian Defense Ministry, allowing him to leave prison early to join the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Before the nightclub incident, Ionkin had already served on the frontlines in Ukraine but was sent back to Russia after sustaining injuries.

Stanislav Ionkin is only one of thousands of Russian prisoners who have been granted early release in exchange for enlisting in the Russian military or joining mercenary organizations like the Wagner Group to fight in Ukraine. This practice has raised serious ethical and legal concerns, as it involves releasing individuals convicted of serious crimes to participate in military operations.

The decision to allow convicts to return to combat has sparked controversy, with critics questioning the implications of deploying convicted murderers to the frontlines.

Prices for Dongfeng armored vehicles start at $130,000, but with all the options, the special vehicle will be twice as expensive.

In China, this all-terrain vehicle is classified as an “anti-terrorist military vehicle” and is offered to law enforcement agencies.

According to Russian media, this armored vehicle is listed on the balance sheet of the Moscow Metro as civilian special equipment registered with “tractor” license plates.

Over the past four months, the Russian subway’s transport security unit has received its fourth ballistic-protected vehicle: the first was the RIDA Buran, then the Z-STS Akhmat, then the Patrol, and now the Chinese Dongfeng has joined them.

The Dongfeng EQ2091XFB is based on the Warrior MS600 SUV: both vehicles have an identical wheelbase (3700 mm), and the body length is almost the same – about six meters.

In terms of cross-country ability, the armored vehicle is significantly superior to other models: it is able to overcome water obstacles up to 1.2 meters deep, with a ground clearance of 305 mm. The vehicle can accommodate up to 10 people.

Last year, the Russian National Guard was armed with the first Chinese-made Tiger armored vehicles.

Het is niet duur om Russische olie te winnen aangezien het conventionele bronnen zijn en er een uitgebreid pijpennetwerk aanwezig is. Saoedische olie is inderdaad veel goedkoper en dan praten we over 2-8$ productiekosten per vat aangezien deze olie dichter aan het oppervlak zit.

On July 22, Kyiv reached a principle agreement with some of its creditors to restructure the country's external debt. Without the deal, Ukraine would have had to begin payments within 10 days of Aug. 1 or potentially face a default.

The bondholders agreed to a nominal loss of 37% of their assets, giving up claims worth $8.5 billion. The deal postpones the bonds' maturity and lowers interest rates, which is expected to save Ukraine $11.4 billion over the next three years, according to the ministry's statement.

The restructuring agreement also includes Ukraine’s state road agency Ukravtodor's Eurobonds.

Consensus was a key, as holders of at least two-thirds of the outstanding debt had to agree to the deal to bind on all creditors, with a minimum threshold of 50% for each bond. The participation rate in each series of bonds ranged from 95% to 98.87%, according to a filing on London stock exchange.

The agreement will save Ukraine $22.75 billion by 2033, according to Marchenko.

"Ukraine's debt will be reduced to a sustainable level, which will allow it to meet the objectives of the IMF program and meet the expectations of the Ukraine's Creditors Group," the minister added.

The euro-denominated bonds will be exchanged for new dollar-denominated Eurobonds at the rate of EUR 0.8959 per $1. The Finance Ministry expects the settlement to take place on Aug. 30.

The Ukrainian parliament approved a bill on July 18 granting the government the right to suspend payments on external public debt until Oct. 1.

"Once completed, this restructuring will also pave the way for Ukraine's market re-entry as soon as possible when the security situation stabilizes to fund our country's swift recovery and reconstruction," Marchenko commented.

Ukrainian drones attacked the Rosrezerves’ Zenit oil depot in Kotelnich, Kirov region of the Russian Federation, which is located more than 1,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

The Russian media BAZA reported on this.

It is announced that four drones at once attacked the oil depot, while some media outlets, citing the local dispatch service, say five, and local media say six.

This attack was the first for the region since the beginning of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war.

Local governor Alexander Sokolov confirmed the attack on his social media.

Attacks on Russian oil depots and oil refineries
On August 26, Militarnyi reported that a massive explosion occurred at an oil refinery in the city of Omsk, followed by a massive fire.

According to official information, the fire area is more than 1,000 square meters, and seven firefighting crews are working at the scene to localize the fire.

Western countries have also reportedly increased pressure on the UAE to prevent Russian entities from circumventing sanctions. The UAE is believed to be a key conduit for sanctioned dual-use goods, such as electronics, being sent to Russia.

Throughout Russia's full-scale war, the UAE has maintained economic and cultural ties with Russia but has also forged new trade agreements with Ukraine.

Klavdiya Tursina-Voitova, 98, who was awarded several military decorations for her service as a medical orderly during the Battle of Stalingrad, appeared to have been overlooked by the Kursk authorities and the district Veterans Council during the evacuation of the village of Kornevo, according to local resident Alina Belogurova.

“Everyone forgot about the only surviving World War II veteran in the region, and the old lady was left completely alone, with nobody willing to save her or even consider her of any use,” Belogurova wrote in a public post on Russian social media platform VK that was later made private.

According to Belogurova, she reported Tursina-Voitova to volunteers, one of whom came and carried Klavdiya to safety.

In its report, 7x7 noted that Tursina-Voitova was well known locally, with her name being mentioned 17 times on the district administration’s website and Kornevo village head Roman Pugachev being photographed with her in 2021.

On August 27, Russian resources began circulating reports that Belarus was allegedly moving equipment to the Ukrainian border and marking it with a "B" tactical sign. Such signs are typically used to indicate affiliation with a specific military grouping.

Border Guard Service spokesperson Demchenko informed LIGA.net that the situation on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border has not changed in recent days. He is unaware of any "B" markings on Belarusian equipment.

On August 25, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citing Ukrainian intelligence agencies, reported that Belarus, under the guise of exercises, was concentrating a "significant number" of troops near Ukraine's northern borders. The presence of former Wagner group fighters was also noted.

On that same day, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council, clarified that the "threat of an offensive from Belarus" is currently just an informational one.

Also that day, the opposition Belarusian OSINT project Belarusian Hajun reported that a group of about 1,100 Belarusian troops was concentrated near the border and such a number of forces being moved to the state border does not pose a threat to Ukraine.

National security concerns — including potential links to Russia — drove the Spanish government's decision to veto Hungarian consortium Ganz-Mávag Europe's attempt to buy Spanish train manufacturer Talgo, Spanish newspaper El País reported Wednesday.

The Spanish government's unprecedented decision to veto a takeover bid made by a group that is partially owned by the Hungarian government on national security grounds raises questions about the future of the Spanish company and Hungary's reputation in international trade.

It's the latest sign of how relations between Hungary and other EU countries have deteriorated over charges that PM Viktor Orbán government is strongly pro-Russian.

A spokesperson for Ganz-Mávag in Spain said the consortium would “take legal action both in Spain and in Europe” against the Spanish government's decision. The move will almost certainly lead to a clash in Brussels, where the European Commission will likely be called on to mediate between Madrid and Budapest.

The Spanish government moved to block the deal after Spain's National Intelligence Center and the Department of National Security submitted their reports on the ¤619 million takeover bid. While those documents are classified, Spain's economy ministry on Tuesday confirmed the deal had been deemed to pose "insurmountable risks for national security and public order."

According to the Spanish media, the veto is motivated by alleged ties that exist between Ganz-Mávag and Moscow, and the possibility that Talgo technology that could facilitate the transport Russian troops in Ukraine and beyond.

Talgo has developed a proprietary variable-gauge vehicle system that allows its high speed trains to automatically adapt to railway tracks with different gauges, permitting for quick cross-border travel. There are concerns that if Ganz-Mávag were to acquire Talgo, its designs could be shared with Moscow.

Hungarian state investment fund Corvinus holds a 45 percent share of the Ganz-Mávag Europe consortium; the remaining 55 percent is owned by Hungarian trainmaker Magyar Vagon group through the Ganz-Mávag Holding. The latter company was a subsidiary of the Russian train manufacturer Transmashholding and has historic financial links to the Russian Exim bank. While Moscow officially ended its participation in 2022, reports suggest that informal ties remain active.

Magyar Vagon director András Tombor earlier insisted that the group's ties with Russia had been severed after the invasion of Ukraine, and the only current link is a project in Egypt, which "they must undertake because of a legal commitment." But the classified Spanish intelligence reports allegedly show that the separation of the Russian and Hungarian businesses was just for show.

Spain's left-wing government coalition has been wary of Ganz-Mávag's attempts to acquire Talgo since it launched its takeover bid last year. In April, Transport Minister Óscar Puente raised the company's alleged Russian links and expressed doubts over whether Hungarian factories could solve Talgo's production shortage problem.

Puente urged the train manufacturer's competitors, among them CAF, Stadler and Alstom, to counter the Ganz-Mávag offer, but Talgo's owners appeared comfortable with the Hungarian deal. Earlier this month, the company turned down a merger with the Czech ¦koda Group and appeared poised to move forward with the takeover, which has been approved by the Spanish National Securities Market Commission.

The government veto has led to a crisis for the company. Talgo's shares dropped 10 percent shortly after the veto was announced on Tuesday.

“We have round-the-clock security, and it was our security guards who observed the drones over the technology park on the night of Friday, August 23,” Ronny Lie, Group Communications Manager at Kongsberg, said.

The drones were spotted directly over Kongsberg Technology Park, where Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace’s facilities are located.

The company specializes in producing NSM and JSM anti-ship cruise missiles, NASAMS launchers, and other military equipment.

Separately, the company’s representatives pointed to a large-scale Russian intelligence network spread across Europe that conducts surveillance for sabotage.

Kongsberg is one of the most important companies in Norway, as it supports Ukraine with NASAMS air defense systems, manufactures and maintains them.

“It’s well documented that Russia is doing this, and so any possible intelligence activity that could be part of a larger operation should be taken seriously,” Tom Røseth, an intelligence expert, noted.

Militarnyi previously reported that Russian sabotage groups are suspected of setting fire to a metal plant in Berlin of Diehl, a company that helps Ukraine with air defense.

According to the company, the fire broke out in early May and caused tens of millions of euros in damage.

“Russia is increasingly recruiting civilians, mostly criminals, via Telegram to carry out such attacks,” a security official shared with the newspaper.

Analysing video evidence shared on social media, The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Ukrainian forces had captured more than 240 Russian soldiers since the start of the AFU offensive. “Some of the captured troops identify themselves in the videos as conscripts”, The Washington Post said, adding that conscripts were “not generally expected to face battle”.

Reports of Russian Airborne Forces conscripts being deployed to the Kursk region also appeared on Russian social media platform VK on Sunday, though they were promptly deleted by the platform for being “false information”, Russian independent media outlet 7x7 wrote on Wednesday.

The news flies in the face of the repeated assurances given by Vladimir Putin since 2022 that young recruits doing their mandatory military service would not be sent to the front lines.

Standing amid ruins in east Ukraine, Ruslan Mokrytskyi held a combat knife and concentrated on cutting onions without crying. As trivial as it seems on the front line, it is still not easy.

The moustachioed 32-year-old in military fatigues instructed his comrade to get the right shot of him with his phone.

The angle matters. Mokrytskyi is one of Ukraine's soldier-influencers keeping up spirits in times of war and has 131,600 followers on TikTok.

"Take a close-up of my fingers," he told his friend, a cameraman for the day. "Lower the frame."

The shot showed his shrapnel-scarred hands as he peeled the onions carefully.

Mokrytskyi's social media profile describes his life as a part-time celebrity chef and soldier in a nutshell: "A cook from the hell of war."

The day AFP met him, he revisited an Italian classic, pasta all'arrabbiata.

Just 24 hours earlier, he was a drone pilot in what he called the "hell of Toretsk" -- defending the eastern city that Russia has been trying to capture for months.

- 'Rebuilding myself' -
At the front since the start of the war in 2022, Mokrytskyi needed a form of escape while being under constant fire.

"After missions, there were, let's say... many horrible and stressful images," he said.

"I needed to recuperate mentally."

He tried to forget the horrors by plunging into films, music, reading and going on walks despite the bombs. But nothing worked.

"I got to the point where I told myself that it would be cool to film myself making fries," the soldier said.

The success of that idea exceeded his expectations: his fries video got three million views.

Encouraged, Mokrytskyi involved friends from his battalion, who would call their wives to get ideas for recipes.

He then realised he was not only helping his own mental health but that of his comrades too.

"Everyone was joking around," he said. "It's not just me rebuilding myself mentally, but also everyone around me."

His video sessions offer "an hour or two" of light-heartedness -- an unusual feeling on the front in Donbas, where fighting has been incessant for two and half years since Moscow invaded.

- 'You can go mad' -
His fellow battalion member Ivan played with the camera and looked delighted with the uplifting break from war.

Normally, Ivan's nights are restless.

"When I film Ruslan, I don't think about the war," the 25-year-old said, adding that he also gets the extra bonus of a good meal while helping make the videos.

On his TikTok page, Mokrytskyi's content alternates between cooking recipes and raw images showing the realities of war.

On top of having "vital" psychological benefits, running the social media page means the soldier retains a link with civilian life.

It also allows civilians -- as well as his family -- to keep informed on what a soldier's life is like in the east.

Mokrytskyi said that "if you do not have contact with your family, you can go mad."

He strives to make the content entertaining but war-related, like converting a rifle cartridge into a pepper shaker and using products found in destroyed cities he travels through.

- 'We are ordinary people' -
Now a recognisable face, some businesses are getting interested in Mokrytskyi.

"An energy drinks company approached me," he said, to make him a brand ambassador.

"They sent packs of drinks and helped me when I was wounded," he added, his hands still bearing the scars.

He initially got generous donations from civilians but, after two and a half years of war, those have dried up.

Yet he knows his videos help keep up Ukrainian spirits -- and even may be helping undermine the enemy's stereotypes.

"The Russians also watch my videos," he said with a smile.

"They see that we are ordinary people defending their country, and not fascists or I don't know what else," he said, referring to Moscow's portrayal of Ukraine and its stated aim of "de-Nazifying" the country.

This in part motivates him running his cooking war channel, despite his very demanding obligations as a soldier.

When a friend was killed it took him "four days to get back my spirits" but then he went back to making videos.

Back on his cooking spree, the aroma of hot parmesan was rising above the ruins and Mokrytskyi emptied the pasta onto the plastic plates of his comrades.

The Ministry of Defense of Lithuania has handed over a new military aid package to Ukraine to improve its logistics and infantry capabilities.

The Ministry reported on this on its website.

In response to a request from Ukraine, Lithuania has transferred an additional military aid package to provide the Ukrainian Defense Forces with equipment.

First of all, counter drone systems were transferred to protect personnel from Russian UAVs.

Lithuania also transferred forklifts used by logistics units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to load ammunition, spare parts, and other items.

Additionally, folding beds and other equipment needed by the military on the front line were added to this list.

According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, since the beginning of 2024, the country has donated 155 mm ammunition, M577 command post vehicles, M113 armored personnel carriers, counter drone systems, equipment and warm clothing sets for the winter season, and ammunition for the Carl Gustaf rifles to the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Additionally, RISE-1 remote detonation systems, generators, disassembled spare parts of the L-39ZA Albatros light attack aircraft, forklifts, trailers, folding beds, and more were transferred.

The Ministry of Defense of Lithuania noted that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Lithuania has transferred equipment worth ¤647 million to Ukraine.

Despite this insignificant amount compared to other countries, the country plans to increase the amount to more than ¤1 billion, thus demonstrating its unwavering support for Ukraine in the war against Russia.

Militarnyi previously reported that Lithuania will allocate ¤35 million to purchase radars and mine clearance equipment for Ukraine.

In addition, Lithuania plans to supply the Ukrainian Defense Forces with more than 5,000 domestically produced drones by the end of the fall.

A day prior, Rafael Grossi, the director of the IAEA, visited the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant following allegations from Russian President Vladimir Putin and other officials that Ukraine has tried – or intends to try – to attack the plant amid the ongoing Ukrainian incursion in the area.

Kyiv has denied the allegations.

After the visit, Grossi warned about the risks associated with the facility amid Ukraine's ongoing incursion into Kursk Oblast, but said the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant was "operating in very close to normal conditions."

Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova, in an interview with Radio Sputnik, criticized the IAEA's statement, saying that the agency must speak out more clearly on nuclear security issues.

"We see both the assessments and the work of this structure (the IAEA), but each time, we want a more objective and clearer expression of the position of this structure," Zakharova said.

The fault of the Ukrainian side in escalating nuclear danger at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant is more than obvious, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed on the same day, according to RIA Novosti.

On Aug. 28, Russia's National Guard also claimed on Telegram that its sappers had found a shell from a U.S.-supplied HIMARS multiple launch rocket system 5 km (3 miles) from the plant, as well as a rocket fragment which it said was stuffed with 180 unexploded munitions.

A video published by Russia's National Guard showed alleged fragments of the rocket, which two soldiers claimed had been shot down by Russian air defenses and had partially exploded in the air.

Ukraine earlier refuted Russian Putin's accusations that Kyiv had attempted to attack the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant.

"Russia's desired scenario of Ukraine's Defense Forces attacking the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant to accuse them of nuclear terrorism fell apart, so Putin joined the propaganda," said Andrii Kovalenko, the head of the counter-disinformation department at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.

Ik denk dat je heel erg moet oppassen met een machtig iemand die dit ziet als existentiële strijd en nooit echt onder de mensen heeft geleefd maar z'n halve leven zowat al wereldleider is en in een totaal andere wereld leeft dan de meeste mensen.
