IndyCar team owners are again calling upon the series to drop the idea of alternate body kits for 2013.

The series originally planned to allow bodywork other than the standard Dallara parts to be made available for the new DW12 car this year, but eventually delayed the move until next season after concerns from team owners about the additional cost.

Team owners met with series CEO Randy Bernard in Detroit last weekend to clear the air after Bernard tweeted last week that there was a push from within one team to have him removed from his post, and Rahal Letterman Lanigan's Bobby Rahal told AUTOSPORT that bodywork was one of the issues that was raised.

"Some of the concerns [from the teams] are about cost," he said. "But some of it is also the ability to fix carbon work in non-sanctioned places."

Rahal is hopeful that the issue will be dealt with quickly.

"I thought the meeting was very constructive," he said. "I don't think there were any real answers, but the owners certainly made their case and the atmosphere was respectful. I think now IndyCar has to go back and deal with the concerns that the owners have, and we expect to hear something in the next couple of weeks."

Speaking in Detroit on Sunday, Bernard said that he was sensitive to the teams' concerns.

"We do have issues, and part of my job is trying to work with them on cost control and bringing costs down," he said. "I don't think that we're taking a position of, 'too bad'. We're taking a position of, 'we need to help you, and we're going to work with you to try to bring those costs down.'"

General Motors, Honda and Lotus have already expressed an intention to build their own bodykits in 2013, while Dallara has also explored creating an alternative aero kit ether under its own name or on a contract basis for another company. The kits are expected to cost $75,000 each, with teams needing separate kits for road/street courses and ovals.

Road America was eerder een populaire race op de Champ Car-kalender.

This year's IndyCar Series will remain at 15 races after series organisers decided not to replace its planned Chinese event.

It was announced on June 13 that the Qingdao street race, scheduled to take place on August 19, would not go ahead, reducing the calendar from 16 events to 15.

Since then a number of alternative venues have been suggested as replacements, with both oval and road courses considered.

But on Monday, IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard confirmed that there would be no further adjustments to the scheduld this year.

"After carefully considering all possible options for an additional race, we felt it was in our best interest to keep our schedule at its current 15-event lineup," said Bernard.

"We want to make sure that when we add events to our roster they have long-term potential and are given every opportunity to be successfully promoted. The more we explored, the more we felt like we were rushing what could be good, long-lasting opportunities for the sport.

"I thank all of the promoters who entertained the possibility of hosting the IndyCar Series this season. It certainly validated what we already knew - there's a lot of interest from venues across North America in hosting our sport."

The series has also announced that the season finale at Fontana on September 15 will be extended from 400 to 500 miles. The two-mile superspeedway last hosted a 500 mile IndyCar event in 2002, which was won by Jimmy Vasser.

IndyCar will reintroduce its 'push to pass' overtaking aid for the five remaining road and street courses on the 2012 schedule, starting with next weekend's Toronto round.

Series technical boss Will Phillips said that the system would be similar to that used when it was originally introduced in 2009.

"It will be similar to what it was in the past because we know that model worked," he said.

The amount of additional boost and the amount of time that the extra boost will be available will be pre-determined by the series, and will vary depending upon the circuit.

Recharge time and any delays between activations will also be set by the series, although engine manufacturers will be able to make specific adjustments to tailor the system to their engine.

As part of the introduction of push to pass, the base turbo boost level will drop to 150 kPa, and increase by 10 kPa when the system is engaged.

Teams will have an opportunity to test the system early in the Toronto race weekend.

Rubens Barrichello is set to switch from KV Racing to a rival squad for the 2013 IndyCar season.

The 40-year-old Brazilian has endured a frustrating transition to racing in North America after leaving Formula 1 at the end of last season, with just five finishes inside the top 10 and a best result of seventh.

It was widely assumed that his close relationship with fellow KV driver Tony Kanaan - who engineered his move to IndyCar – would be enough to keep him with the team next year.

However, Barrichello said that he has no qualms about moving from the squad owned by Kevin Kalkhoven and Jimmy Vasser to a team that can deliver on his aim to run at the front.

AUTOSPORT understands that he has already held advanced talks with at least one Honda-powered team about a drive next year.

"I don't like being 15th, and I am working myself up," Barrichello told AUTOSPORT. "I'm getting better in comparison with my team-mates, but my car is still not. And the strategy side still hasn't clicked.

"I'm fairly open to [KV owners] Jimmy [Vasser] and Kevin [Kalkhoven]; they gave me a car, and we had a situation where the deal was done in the last 20 minutes. But I'm here to win.

"Now that I have done IndyCar, I want to do it better, because I don't think I was able to do what I am really capable of for one reason or another. And since I do this because I enjoy doing it, I might as well come back."

Het zijn mensenlevens waar je over praat, geen legopoppetjes.

De Italiaanse zakenman Paolo Scudieri is met de raceklasse in gesprek om volgend jaar een Italiaanse IndyCar race op Mugello te organiseren. Vanaf 2014 zou Scudieri graag een race in de straten van Napels organiseren. Hierbij zou hij nu de mogelijkheden en een mogelijke locatie onderzoeken, waarbij een stratencircuit vergelijkbaar met Monaco zijn doel zou zijn. Naast deze race zou zelfs een tweede Italiaanse race tot de mogelijkheden behoren.

Het bedrijf van Scudieri, de Adler Group, ontwikkelt en produceert producten in de transportsector, waarbij het samenwerkt met grote automerken als Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Citroën, Ferrari, Fiat, Opel, Peugeot en Volkswagen. Met 8.000 werknemers en een jaaromzet van ongeveer 1 miljard euro is het bedrijf geen kleiner speler in de automobielbranche.

De IndyCar Series lijkt naast een mogelijke Italiaanse race mogelijk ook andere Italiaanse invloeden te krijgen. Scuduria Coloni maakte al eerder bekend graag de overstap van de GP2 Series naar de IndyCar Series te willen maken, vermoedelijk met de Italiaan Luca Filippi als coureur. Ook lijkt er een realistische kans aanwezig dat Alex Zanardi achter het stuur terug zal keren voor een éénmalig optreden in de Indianapolis 500.

Simona de Silvestro felt the need to leave the comfort of the only team she’s ever raced for in the IZOD IndyCar Series to advance her career. KV Racing Technology hopes the infusion of the young driving talent can bring it back to the front.

The popular Swiss driver will join KV Racing Technology in 2013, where she will drive the No. 78 Chevrolet-powered Indy car alongside former series champion Tony Kanaan.

“It’s definitely exciting to be joining KV Racing (Technology),” de Silvestro said. “I’ve had a lot of good results in the past and I think this will help me get more (results). Having a teammate like Tony is really cool. I’m just really looking forward to the season.”

After being saddled with the underachieving Lotus engine in 2012, the 24-year-old native of Thun, Switzerland began looking at options for the 2013 season. She said she’s found a “perfect fit” with KV Racing Technology, which fielded cars for Kanaan, E.J. Viso and Rubens Barrichello in 2012.

"I am very happy to welcome Simona to KV Racing Technology," says team co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven. "I have been watching her race for many years and she shows tremendous talent. I think we will really see this on the road/street courses and having Tony as a teammate will provide her a wealth of information, so I am excited for what the 2013 season will hold."

KV Racing Technology also welcomes Imran Safiulla as a team principal. Safiulla, an international industrialist who has supported De Silvestro’s racing efforts since 2006, expects the new arrangement to be a successful endeavor for both De Silvestro and KV Racing Technology.

"We are delighted to announce Simona to KV,” said team co-owner Jimmy Vasser. “She has shown a lot of determination and to now be able to work with someone as experienced as Kanaan will be a huge asset for her. I would also like to welcome our new co-owner Imran Safiulla to the team and hope we have a successful 2013."

But leaving HVM Racing, the team which brought her to the IZOD IndyCar Series in 2010, didn’t make de Silvestro’s decision very easy.

“When you change teams it’s always hard,” said de Silvestro, who tested with her new team for the first time on Oct. 29 at Barber Motorsports Park. “The other team was like a family, but it was time for a change, and this opportunity made a lot of sense. You have to get used to working with new people, especially when you’ve been somewhere three years with the same people. But yesterday, it was fun and we had a good test for the first time together.”

Key to the move was the support of sponsors Nuclear Clean Air Energy, Entergy and AREVA, who will move along with de Silvestro to her new team. Working with a teammate for the first time in her career was also appealing.

“I think it’s really important to have a teammate,” she said. “In my career, I’ve always been by myself. I think having data and having someone like Tony on the team will really help me. Tony and I get along really well. He has lot of experience knows a lot about the car and racing. Having him as a teammate is really important, and I’m going to learn a lot from him.”

And it also leaves her confident that she can contend for podiums and wins in 2013.

“That was my goal last year, but we didn’t have the engine to do it,” de Silvestro said. “I think have great team behind me, great engineering support and Chevy power will be a big difference. It’s fun to drive again. Hopefully, it can push us forward to accomplish all of our goals.”

Graham Rahal heeft een 3-jarig contract getekend bij Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Dat is woensdag bekendgemaakt op een persconferentie in Indianapolis. De transfer van Graham Rahal naar het team van vader Bobby hing al langer in de lucht. Rahal zal op 27 november tijdens een test op Barber Motorsport Park zijn debuut maken in de de familie Dalara.

Graham Rahal reed de afgelopen twee seizoenen voor het tweede team van Chip Ganassi. ''Ik ben extreem gelukkig dat ik voor Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing ga rijden'', aldus Rahal. ''Ik dacht niet dat het zo vroeg in mijn carrière zou gebeuren, maar het klop helemaal. Het team heeft het afgelopen jaar veel laten zien en ontwikkeld zich nog steeds.''

Ook vader Bobby toonde zich blij. ,,Het is een goed moment voor de familie, het team en de sport'', aldus de voormalig Indycar-kampioen en Indy 500-winnaar. Er licht nu natuurlijk een grote druk op mij om een goede auto neer te zetten. Ik denk dat we de omgeving kunnen creëren waarin Graham zijn potentieel kan waarmaken.''

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing reed dit seizoen voor het eerst sinds jaren weer volledig mee in de Indycars. Met Takuma Sato wist het team bijna de Indy 500 te winnen. De afgelopen jaren reed het team alleen deze beroemde race. In 2010 bestuurde Graham die bolide naar een twaalfde plaats. Voorlopig is alleen Rahal bevestigd als coureurs voor 2013. Een tweede wagen kan nog worden toegevoerd. Het team is erg gecharmeerd van Ryan Briscoe, maar ook coureurs als Sato en James Jakes, Tristan Vautier en Michel Jourdain worden genoemd in het geruchtencircuit.

SPEED.com has confirmed through multiple sources that Formula One veteran and 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series rookie Rubens Barrichello has accepted an offer to race full time in the Brazilian Stock Car series in 2013.

Prior to that decision, Barrichello had been working to raise the funds to return to IndyCar with a Honda-powered team.

Sam Schmidt Motorsports and Rahal Letterman Lanigan were the leading candidates to sign the 11-time grand prix winner, but the Brazilian struggled to find all of the multi-million-dollar budget that was needed to land a competitive drive. He was also linked to a possible return to F1 with the Caterham team.

Barrichello declined to comment on his future plans when reached Tuesday in Brazil.

Although a formal announcement is expected in the coming days, his friend and former KV Racing teammate Tony Kanaan says that time and financial constraints have forced Barrichello down the path he’s pursuing.

“He got a proposal there (in Brazilian Stock Cars) because right now people aren’t giving him many options (in IndyCar),” Kanaan remarked. “They’re asking him for money to keep racing in IndyCar, and he doesn’t have all the sponsors. I know his heart is still in IndyCar, but he’s not going to sit and wait. It’s a shame, but it’s the reality of racing right now. It’s really sad. He has to look out for his own interest.”

Barrichello spent 19 years in F1, placing second in the championship on two occasions before switching to the IndyCar Series in 2012.

Driving for team owners Kevin Kalkhoven and Jimmy Vasser, Barrichello’s deal came together relatively late in the off-season, and despite his lack of experience with the car, circuits and oval racing in general, earned seven top-10 finishes and a best of fourth at Sonoma on the way to securing 12th in the final standings.

The 40-year-old contested last weekend's Brazilian Stock Car season finale at Interlagos with the Medley Full Time Sports Peugeot team, and with a lucrative offer to remain in the series, it's believed Barrichello had until the end of the weekend to accept the proposal.

With no scheduling conflicts in place, the door appears to remain open for Barrichello to contest next year’s IndyCar race on the streets of Sao Paulo, but another run at Indianapolis could be tricky as Round 4 of the Brazilian Stock Car series is being held on the same weekend as qualifying for the 500.

Takuma Sato has signed a deal to contest the 2013 IndyCar Series campaign for A.J. Foyt Racing. The Japanese driver, who finished 14th in the standings with Rahal Letterman Lanigan last year, replaces Britain's Mike Conway at the squad.

"I am extremely excited to be a part of A.J. Foyt Racing and working with ABC Supply for the 2013 season," said the ex-F1 driver. "I have seen the potential of the team last year on a number of occasions. I think the team has one of the best engineering staffs in the paddock led by Don Halliday. I can’t wait to start testing next month."

Team owner A.J. Foyt is equally pleased with the agreement, explaining that Sato's experience and relentless desite to succeed made him the obvious choice for 2013.

"There were a lot of question marks when the season ended, but I’m happy to put an end to all that now," explained Foyt. "We chose to go with Takuma Sato because he brings a lot of experience to our team but he has the hunger of a rookie.

"He’s certainly proven he has the desire to win. I think he has learned quite a bit in the short time he’s been over here and I look forward to working with him this year."

Sato, who will contest all 19 rounds of the 2013 IndyCar season, is set to be joined at the team by rookie Chase Austin for the blue riband Indianapolis 500 event in May.

Mike Conway doesn't regret walking away from last season's IndyCar finale, a decision made when he realized he simply wasn't comfortable racing on ovals.

The Englishman just doesn't want that choice to mark the end of his IndyCar career.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing is the first team to give Conway another chance, announcing Monday a one-race deal for the April 21 race on the street course at Long Beach. Conway, who scored the only IndyCar win of his career at Long Beach in 2011, will drive a second Honda for RLL.

''I'm very excited - it's a track I know well, and a place I've won before and I'm really looking forward to competing again,'' he told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

Conway has been trying to put together a program of street and road course races in IndyCar, the series he still wants to be part of despite his decision to give up his seat at Fontana last September. He walked away after a day of testing at the 2-mile oval, telling A.J. Foyt Racing he was too uneasy to continue.

Conway missed most of the 2010 season with serious injuries to his back and leg suffered in a last-lap crash at the Indianapolis 500. He was in the 2011 finale at Las Vegas when Dan Wheldon was killed, and was involved in a wreck at Indianapolis last season in which his car turned on its side against the fence.

As SPEED.com has recently chronicled, interest has grown in reigning Firestone Indy Lights Series champion Tristan Vautier after he made an emphatic IndyCar testing debut in early December with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Prior to the test, Vautier had dreams of joining the IndyCar Series, but it was his performance at the Sebring test that accelerated an interest in his services by SPM and Dragon Racing.

Dragon Racing looked like it was in pole position to sign the open-wheel phenom as teammate to 4-time Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais, but as I learned late last week, Vautier opted to sign for SPM, which will be formally announced Tuesday during a teleconference.

Not only has the 23-year-old come to terms with the team that carried him to the 2012 Lights title, but he'll also complete an all-French lineup for SPM with an incredible arsenal of engineering and mechanical support behind him.

The team's recent re-acquisition of championship-winning engineer Allen McDonald has been the biggest move among IndyCar personnel during the off-season, and coupled with the driving and mentoring talents of Pagenaud and the technical wizardry of his engineer Ben Bretzman, Vautier is stepping into the strongest scenario for an IndyCar rookie in recent memory.

Completing the funding to run Vautier has been an ongoing process, with a multitude of public and private backers stepping up to ensure the Mazda Road To Indy poster child becomes an IndyCar driver.

Along with Josef Newgarden, Vautier is now the second consecutive Lights champion to graduate directly into a full-time IndyCar Series ride, which can only help the ladder series as it looks to bolster its declining grid.

The series also confirmed Vautier will receive the full $1 million advancement prize due to signing to drive for a team that does not have a Leader Circle contract for the second entry he will pilot.

Details were still being finalized Monday, but Andretti Autosport is expected to announce later this week that veteran IndyCar driver EJ Viso will join its program.

Viso has started 82 races with two different teams (HVM Racing and KV Racing Technology). He has not won a race.

If signed, Viso will join a stable that includes reigning series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti and James Hinchcliffe.

Viso finished 20th in last year’s standings. He finished a season-best fifth in Milwaukee.

The Venezuelan spent the past three seasons with the KV team. He will be 28 when the season begins in late March.

Michael Andretti’s team is expected to field five cars at the Indianapolis 500, the last one for Firestone Indy Lights driver Carlos Munoz.

AJ Allmendinger’s career is coming full circle – albeit making left and right turns.

Allmendinger, 31, will test an IndyCar for Penske Racing at Sebring International Raceway on Feb. 18 and 19. If the test is successful, Allmendinger will make his open-wheel debut for Penske Racing at Barber Motorsports Park on April 7.

Sources told FOXSports.com that if everything goes according to plan and sponsorship can be acquired, Allmendinger will also run at Long Beach in preparation for the Indianapolis 500.

“The first test is just to see how things go at Sebring,” Allmendinger said late Wednesday by phone. “It’s been seven years since I’ve been in one of those cars – and they’ve changed quite a bit. I know it won’t be easy. But I know I’ll be in the best possible equipment and I’ll have Will Power there – one of the fastest guys in the sport – to help me get up to speed. I’m really looking forward to it. At least Sebring is a track I know.

Andretti Autosport confirmed on Thursday that it has signed E.J. Viso to drive its a fourth entry in the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series. Viso will drive the No. 5 Team Venezuela PDVSA Dallara-Chevrolet, joining Andretti's full-season efforts of reigning series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay, James Hinchcliffe and Marco Andretti. The entry is a result of an off-season collaboration between HVM Racing and Andretti, resulting in a joint entry.

The unique three-way deal represents a win-win-win scenario with Andretti Autosport returning to its traditional four-car full-time lineup, Viso joining the championship-defending team and HVM Racing securing an arrangement that provides for continuation of its business in IndyCar as an incubation to a potential return in 2014 for the Indianapolis-based team owned by Keith Wiggins. HVM fielded Simona de Silvestro in IndyCar last season.

"I could not ask for more than to get the opportunity to drive for a championship team while representing my country," said 27-year-old Viso. "After five years in the series I believe I have found the right environment and look forward to having Ryan, James and Marco as teammates. I'm very proud to be able to move into the 2013 season with this new relationship; it's a dream come true."

Now entering his sixth season with the IndyCar Series, Viso began his racing career via go karts at the age of five, capturing five Winter National Karting Championships. Viso went on to win the British Formula 3 Championship and became the youngest driver in the Formula 3000 International the following year. Since joining the IndyCar Series, he has recorded 16 top-10 finishes, and has led a total of 52 laps during his five years racing in North America's elite championship.

Tot op heden heeft de IndyCar Series zelf nog niets rondom de Italiaanse race bevestigd.

Voor de kalender zou het erg goed uitkomen wanneer er een extra race in september kan worden verreden, op dit moment zit er tussen de races in Baltimore (1 september) en Houston (5-6 oktober) een gat van vijf weken.

De laatste keer dat Europese fans van een Amerikaanse openwheel race konden genieten was in 2007, toen Champ Car de oceaan overstak voor races in België en Nederland.

Tuesday's announcement that Sebastian Saavedra has been signed to drive the No. 6 Dragon Racing entry, a car piloted by Katherine Legge in 2012, has been met with a critical response by the open-wheel veteran.

Legge, who returned to Indy car competition last season after racing in the European DTM series, issued a statement Wednesday morning that details a number of her issues with her former sponsor and employer.

"I am extremely disappointed that Dragon Racing and sponsor TrueCar have announced a replacement IndyCar driver for [the No.] 6 car," she said. "I received a letter from Dragon Racing, terminating my services on January the 18th. My legal team had asked for details regarding the reasoning for this termination but none have been provided."

Legge's next course of action, according to the release, will involve lawyers.

"I signed a two year deal for 2012/2013 with TrueCar as a sponsor, and then I took that sponsorship to Dragon Racing shortly thereafter," she said. "Jay Penske told (TrueCar CEO) Scott Painter that he would bring the Penske Dealerships onboard with TrueCar if I signed with Dragon Racing, so it seemed like it would be a good fit for all. I firmly believe that Dragon Racing and TrueCar cannot proceed without me and I will be taking legal action to protect my rights."

According to Legge, being released by the team two months before the start of the season has left her in a difficult position to find a place on the IndyCar grid.

“It was a very difficult season last year, we did very little testing and I was made to sit out of some of the races,” she said. “I was very much looking forward to 2013, using the experience I gained last year as a spring board for greater success. I am in a very fortunate position to have the FIA (of which I am a Female Driver Ambassador) and Girl Scouts (STEM Ambassador) onboard with my career and I am working feverishly to put something together. However, having this happen so late in the game has made it virtually impossible.”
