Andretti Autosport confirmed on Thursday that it has signed E.J. Viso to drive its a fourth entry in the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series. Viso will drive the No. 5 Team Venezuela PDVSA Dallara-Chevrolet, joining Andretti's full-season efforts of reigning series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay, James Hinchcliffe and Marco Andretti. The entry is a result of an off-season collaboration between HVM Racing and Andretti, resulting in a joint entry.

The unique three-way deal represents a win-win-win scenario with Andretti Autosport returning to its traditional four-car full-time lineup, Viso joining the championship-defending team and HVM Racing securing an arrangement that provides for continuation of its business in IndyCar as an incubation to a potential return in 2014 for the Indianapolis-based team owned by Keith Wiggins. HVM fielded Simona de Silvestro in IndyCar last season.

"I could not ask for more than to get the opportunity to drive for a championship team while representing my country," said 27-year-old Viso. "After five years in the series I believe I have found the right environment and look forward to having Ryan, James and Marco as teammates. I'm very proud to be able to move into the 2013 season with this new relationship; it's a dream come true."

Now entering his sixth season with the IndyCar Series, Viso began his racing career via go karts at the age of five, capturing five Winter National Karting Championships. Viso went on to win the British Formula 3 Championship and became the youngest driver in the Formula 3000 International the following year. Since joining the IndyCar Series, he has recorded 16 top-10 finishes, and has led a total of 52 laps during his five years racing in North America's elite championship.

Ondanks dat het lange tijd stil is geweest rondom de plannen voor een Italiaanse IndyCar race, lijkt de kans nog zeker aanwezig te zijn dat IndyCar dit jaar nog terugkeert naar Europa. Het Italiaanse circuit van Mugello heeft de IndyCar Series namelijk voor 13 tot 15 september op de onlangs gepubliceerde kalender van het circuit geplaatst. Tot op heden heeft de IndyCar Series zelf nog niets rondom de Italiaanse race bevestigd.

Voor de kalender zou het erg goed uitkomen wanneer er een extra race in september kan worden verreden, op dit moment zit er tussen de races in Baltimore (1 september) en Houston (5-6 oktober) een gat van vijf weken.

De laatste keer dat Europese fans van een Amerikaanse openwheel race konden genieten was in 2007, toen Champ Car de oceaan overstak voor races in België en Nederland.

Sebastian Saveedra tekent bij Dragon Racing.

Hij gaat rijden met de #6 Dragon waarmee Katherine Legge vorig jaar reed. Wat er met Legge gaat gebeuren is niet bekend. Ze had een contract voor dit jaar. Haar sponsor TrueCar blijft bij Dragon.

Tuesday's announcement that Sebastian Saavedra has been signed to drive the No. 6 Dragon Racing entry, a car piloted by Katherine Legge in 2012, has been met with a critical response by the open-wheel veteran.

Legge, who returned to Indy car competition last season after racing in the European DTM series, issued a statement Wednesday morning that details a number of her issues with her former sponsor and employer.

"I am extremely disappointed that Dragon Racing and sponsor TrueCar have announced a replacement IndyCar driver for [the No.] 6 car," she said. "I received a letter from Dragon Racing, terminating my services on January the 18th. My legal team had asked for details regarding the reasoning for this termination but none have been provided."

Legge's next course of action, according to the release, will involve lawyers.

"I signed a two year deal for 2012/2013 with TrueCar as a sponsor, and then I took that sponsorship to Dragon Racing shortly thereafter," she said. "Jay Penske told (TrueCar CEO) Scott Painter that he would bring the Penske Dealerships onboard with TrueCar if I signed with Dragon Racing, so it seemed like it would be a good fit for all. I firmly believe that Dragon Racing and TrueCar cannot proceed without me and I will be taking legal action to protect my rights."

According to Legge, being released by the team two months before the start of the season has left her in a difficult position to find a place on the IndyCar grid.

“It was a very difficult season last year, we did very little testing and I was made to sit out of some of the races,” she said. “I was very much looking forward to 2013, using the experience I gained last year as a spring board for greater success. I am in a very fortunate position to have the FIA (of which I am a Female Driver Ambassador) and Girl Scouts (STEM Ambassador) onboard with my career and I am working feverishly to put something together. However, having this happen so late in the game has made it virtually impossible.”
