Because they read very little, their comprehension skills and ability to distinguish good writing from bad writing is low. This is true for infrequent readers across the political spectrum. All of this is extremely disturbing to me.
Many non/infrequent-readers prefer easily digestible, visual information. I wanted to take the landscape of news sources that I was highly familiar with and put it into an easily digestible, visual format. I wanted it to be easily shareable, and more substantive than a meme, but less substantive than an article. I cite the fact that it has been shared over 20,000 times on Facebook (that I know of) and viewed 3 million times on Imgur as evidence that I accomplished the goal of it being shareable. In contrast, maybe one-one millionth the amount of people will read this boring-ass article about my methodology behind it.
Many non/infrequent readers are quite bad at distinguishing between decent news sources and terrible news sources. I wanted to make this chart in the hopes that if non/infrequent readers saw it, they could use it to avoid trash. For those of you who can discern between the partisan leanings of The Economist and the Wall Street Journal, I have to say this chart was not primarily made for your benefit. You are already good at reading and distinguishing news sources.

Zoals in je artikel te lezen is wordt het budget weggehaald - maar elders weer toegevoegd. Je kunt natuurlijk betwisten, zoals Amerikaanse politici doen, hoe nuttig het is om de desbetreffende programma's te reorganiseren. Daarnaast is, zoals ik zei, de standaard Republikeinse aanpak van drugsproblematiek om geld weg te halen bij de hulpverleningskant en in plaats daarvan in te zetten op strengere handhaving, meer grensbewaking en DEA, en zwaardere straffen. Ik ben voor de duidelijkheid van mening dat dit totaal contraproductief is.
Ten slotte vind ik het wel opmerkelijk dat er wordt beweerd dat die huidige programma's zo goed werken - terwijl de opioid crisis groter is dan ooit. Dat er iets grondig moet veranderen lijkt me evident.
Buckworth, Senator voor Illinois en veteraan die haar beide benen is kwijtgeraakt tijdens een gevecht, heeft Trump de bijnaam Cadet Bone Spurs gegeven. Verwijst naar de manier waarop hij onder de dienstplicht is uitgekomen, door te stellen dat hij door zijn bone spurs (soort botvergroeiing geloof ik), niet kon dienen. Bone spurs zijn echter een bekend smoesje om onder de dienst uit te komen.quote:

That figure includes costs tied to veterans' care and disability benefits, along with “war-related additions” to the Department of Homeland Security, the Pentagon and the State Department.
As our fact checkers report, the number Trump is citing seems to come from another Brown University report, one that estimates future spending all the way out to 2050. His figure also seems to include, they write, matters such as “interest on the debt and veterans' care for the next three decades.” (A working paper from professors at Harvard Kennedy School estimated the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan would ultimately cost taxpayers $4 trillion to $6 trillion.)
Here is another thing about the president's tweet: Despite what he said on the campaign trail, Trump has expanded the war effort in Afghanistan. He approved a troop surge there, a decision that added billions to the overall cost of the war in that country. As my colleague Steven Mufson reported, Trump's “decision to send more troops will add billions of dollars a year to the already-towering war costs, which have topped $1 trillion in Afghanistan alone over the past 16 years. And the government will still be paying for war veterans' health-care costs for at least another half-century.”
Mufson wrote that U.S. spending in Afghanistan will rise to about $840.7 billion if the president's fiscal 2018 budget is approved. (That estimate comes courtesy of Anthony Cordesman, an expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.)

De totale kosten van die oorlogen zijn lastig te meten en afhankelijk van wie het berekent. Ik vond een onderzoek van Brown University dat uitkomt op bijna 5 biljoen/trillion dollar (klik). Een deel daarvan is toekomstige kosten maar aangezien die al berekend kunnen worden lijkt het me niet al te vreemd om die er bij te tellen.
En vóór 2001 zijn er uiteraard ook oorlogen gevoerd in het Midden-Oosten met of door de VS, zoals de Golfoorlog, Desert Storm, burgeroorlog in Libanon, etc etc. De uitspraak dat er zeven biljoen is uitgeven in het Midden-Oosten lijkt me al met al aan de hoge kant en slecht onderbouwd, maar zeker niet totaal onrealistisch.
Jammer dat Trump er zelf ook gewoon mee doorgaat. De hypocrisie druipt er vanaf.

Het lastige aan 'niet-lezers' is ook dat men niet veel snapt van een inhoudelijke discussie. Dat soort mensen denken dat je een discussie voert door er memes en one-liners tegenaan te pleuren in plaats van stellingen onderbouwd met argumenten.
Niet-lezers lijken ook vaak heel matig in staat om nieuwe informatie tot zich te nemen, in context te plaatsen en eventueel eens een mening te herzien. Een doorlopende internetdiscussie zou ook moeten leiden tot zeker evolutie van argumenten. Als iemand A poneert en een ander daar argumenten tegenin brengt, breng je daar weer andere argumenten tegenin of ontkracht je ze, waardoor de discussie niet blijft hangen in een herhaling van zetten. Persbureau's veranderen politieke kleur naargelang invloed van aangeleverde media, en internet media kan zowel de publieke opinie als de manier waarop de pers daar mee om gaat veranderen. Als Fox bijvoorbeeld Bernie Sanders als hoofdredacteur zal krijgen, veranderd de politieke kleur en richting van dit persbureau dan ook? Welk nieuws is tegenwoordig de waarheid? De grafiek geeft alleen maar een dwarsdoorsnede weer. En die verandert met de dag. Ik vind die grafiek net zo weinig zinvol als een belofte van Trump.quote:

Er is ook helemaal niet gezegd dat het diagrammetje onveranderlijk zou moeten zijn. Sterker nog, dat is ook helemaal niet het geval. Helaas blijf je het punt van deze mevrouw maar onderschrijven. In de begeleidende informatie zie je bijvoorbeeld hoe de indeling wordt gemaakt. Ik snap dat het niet hap-snap is, maar enige concentratie en een fatsoenlijk begrip van de Engelse taal vergt. Het helpt echter behoorlijk om iets te begrijpen als je ook leest. Voor nu is het een éénmansproject en dan is het integreren van empirische data wat lastiger (zeker zonder technische achtergrond / automatisering), maar de methodologie staat gewoon uitgebreid beschreven en je kunt op basis daarvan bijvoorbeeld data van factcheckers of handmatige resampling van feitelijke rapportages versus opinie doen. Die data gebruik je dan weer om de chart 'te updaten', al dan niet geautomatiseerd.quote:

Maar je mist nog steeds de enorme ironie. Deze mevrouw geeft heel duidelijk aan waarom ze het diagrammetje gemaakt heeft. Om dat het gros van de mensen op internet tegenwoordig niet meer in staat is om fatsoenlijk een artikel te lezen dat meer dan 140 tekens of een simpel plaatje bevat. Het interessante bij dit soort zaken is altijd de onderliggende methodologie, data en keuzes die gemaakt worden. Die wil echter bijna niemand lezen, ook jij niet.

Governor Tom Wolf Rejects Partisan Gerrymandered Map
