quote:Russia has destroyed more than half of the Kyiv region's pre-war warehouse capacity since its full-scale invasion began, after strikes overnight on August 5 hit 10 warehouse facilities totalling about 100,000 square metres, according to Ukrainian real estate analysts cited by Ukraine Business News.
The Kyiv region's warehouse real estate market has now lost more than 1.2mn square metres, over half of its pre-war stock, with more than 400,000 square metres destroyed since the start of July alone. That is a sharp acceleration from the roughly 500,000 square metres destroyed across the whole of Ukraine over the preceding 12 months, as IntelliNews reported in July - the Kyiv region alone has now roughly matched that nationwide total in a single month.
The attack is part of a wider Russian campaign against Ukraine's civilian logistics and retail infrastructure - after Operation Wildberries, Russia's own e-commerce warehouses came under reciprocal Ukrainian attack - and it is now large enough to move rental prices and squeeze the supply chains that keep Kyiv shops and online retailers stocked.
Despite record construction activity, new development cannot keep pace with the scale of destruction, and there is now almost no vacant warehouse space left in the Kyiv region, particularly large blocks of 10,000 square metres or more that retail chains and logistics operators depend on. The shortage is forcing companies to redesign supply chains, and analysts expect it to push warehouse rental rates up by 7-10%, raise transportation costs and eventually filter through to consumer prices.
The trend was already visible before this month: one of the region's largest hubs, the 100,200-square-metre Amtel logistics complex in Bilohorodka, was almost completely destroyed in a July 19 missile strike that wiped out inventory belonging to Goodwine, WOG, Hilti and several other companies; its owners say rebuilding could take six to ten months.

President Volodymyr Zelensky had plenty of dramatic victories and technological advances to tout to his Western backers as he made the case that Russia can be defeated. His clash with Donald Trump in the Oval Office last year had been eclipsed by more recent encounters in which the U.S. president seemed open to helping Ukraine prevail. After closed-door talks with Zelensky in Turkey last month, Trump offered to meet Kyiv’s desperate need for air defenses and told reporters during a briefing about the two leaders’ promising vibe: “There was a lot of love in that room, a lot of unity.”
In Washington, Zelensky also had a well-connected ambassador in place. Olha Stefanishyna, a former deputy prime minister, was constantly describing Ukraine’s battlefield successes to officials and lawmakers. Her goal was to move beyond those sympathetic to Kyiv’s plight to build “reliable, economic, interest-based relations across America,” she told us in an interview.
That momentum, built up since the start of the year, fizzled in a matter of days. At his meeting with Zelensky last week, Trump did not agree to send more of the Patriot air-defense systems that Ukraine needs to stop Russian ballistic missiles. He also backtracked on his pledge to let Ukrainian companies make these systems themselves. Back in Kyiv, long-festering issues related to wartime corruption weakened Zelensky’s team, leading to the ouster of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov last month and the resignation of Stefanishyna earlier this week. (She returned to Kyiv to address corruption allegations, which she denies.)

Druk met de NATO heruitvinden...quote:
Kyiv Postquote:Zaluzhny: Russia Has Found Counters to Nearly Every NATO Weapon, Alliance Must Reinvent Itself
In brief: Former Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhny said Russia has developed countermeasures to nearly every major NATO weapon used in Ukraine, arguing the alliance must overhaul its military doctrine. He said Ukraine’s battlefield experience has outpaced NATO standards and that only a transformed alliance would be ready for Ukraine’s membership.
Former Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhny said NATO must fundamentally rethink how it fights wars, arguing that Russia has already found ways to counter nearly every major Western weapon used by Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters in Kyiv on Wednesday, Ukraine’s ambassador to the UK sought to clarify controversial remarks made earlier this week suggesting Ukraine would “never” join the alliance.
Zaluzhny insisted he remains a strong supporter of NATO, recalling that he championed the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s transition to NATO standards as early as 2019 despite facing fierce criticism.
However, he said Russia’s full-scale invasion has exposed the alliance’s shortcomings.
“Scientific and technological progress is moving forward. In 2026, Ukraine used virtually every type of weapon – except Tomahawk missiles, nuclear weapons, aircraft carriers and F-35s that are in NATO service,” Zaluzhny said.
“The resource has been exhausted. Russia has found countermeasures to all of this.”
He argued that the war has transformed Ukraine’s military beyond the alliance’s current doctrine, forcing NATO to modernize.
“The Armed Forces of Ukraine have reached a completely different level. NATO has no choice but to move to entirely new standards,” he said.
“Only then will NATO be ready for Ukraine’s accession.”
Zaluzhny also repeated his call for creating “an entirely new security bloc,” likely centered on Europe, to meet the demands of modern warfare.
His comments follow a wave of criticism sparked by remarks on Aug. 3, when he said Ukraine would “never join” NATO because the alliance’s military standards are rooted in doctrines dating back to World War II.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry later said those remarks had been taken out of context and stressed that Kyiv’s goal of joining NATO remains unchanged.
Zaluzhny, who served as Ukraine’s commander-in-chief from 2021-24, has increasingly been mentioned as a potential presidential candidate. According to Ukrainska Pravda, he recently told President Volodymyr Zelensky he would run if elections are held this fall.

Investing.comquote:Ukraine agrees to avoid targeting some tankers and Black Sea oil infrastructure
Ukraine has agreed not to target certain non-Russian oil tankers or infrastructure used to export Kazakhstan’s crude through the Black Sea, Bloomberg reported, citing a U.S. official familiar with the private agreement.
The commitment followed talks between senior U.S. and Ukrainian officials and could help restore oil flows through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal near Novorossiysk, Russia.
Ukraine has established contact points through which commercial shipping companies can share vessel information and arrange safe passage, the official said.
Under the agreement, Kyiv will refrain from attacking CPC infrastructure and vessels travelling to the terminal if they are not sanctioned by Ukraine, do not carry Russian cargo and are not owned by Russian individuals or entities. Ukrainian authorities are also guiding shippers about which vessels could be targeted.
The CPC route normally handles around 2% of global crude supplies and is Kazakhstan’s main oil export channel. European refiners depend heavily on crude shipped from the terminal.
Recent drone attacks near Novorossiysk disrupted loadings and caused some shipowners to avoid the facility. CPC Blend exports are expected to fall by roughly one-third in August, though delayed July cargoes create uncertainty around that estimate.
Commercial vessels chartered by U.S. companies stopped loading during a wave of attacks in the week of July 20. Operations resumed on July 27, but ships at the terminal were struck again two days later.
It remains unclear whether the new safeguards will fully reassure tanker operators. Earlier arrangements intended to protect commercial vessels failed to prevent some ships included on no-target lists from being attacked.
The security risks have driven tanker costs sharply higher. Earnings for vessels carrying CPC crude to the Mediterranean exceeded $400,000 a day on Friday, the highest level recorded for the route by the Baltic Exchange.
Any recovery in Kazakhstan’s exports could ease global supply concerns as the Iran war and restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz keep other barrels off the market.

WSJquote:U.S. Intel Finds Putin Could Test NATO’s Resolve With Limited Incursion
New assessment updates past forecasts that Russia’s leader wouldn’t provoke the alliance during the Ukraine war
WASHINGTON—Russian President Vladimir Putin could try to test NATO’s resolve with a limited assault on an allied country in the next few years, according to new U.S. intelligence reports that posit possible scenarios ranging from a cyberattack to a small-scale land incursion.
The assessments, described by U.S. officials, come amid a shortfall in certain critical munitions that the military would need to confront Russia or China in a potential future war. The U.S. has severely degraded its stockpile of these weapons because of transfers to Ukraine after Russia’s invasion, as well as the U.S. conflict with Iran. Stockpiles at risk include long-range Precision Strike Missiles and Army Tactical Missile Systems, as well as short-range Stinger surface-to-air missiles, other officials said.
The U.S. had previously assessed that Putin wouldn’t provoke a North Atlantic Treaty Organization country while he is still fighting in Ukraine. But that assessment changed earlier this year, the U.S. officials said, as Putin is squeezed in Ukraine and under pressure at home to secure a victory. Kyiv’s drones are inflicting growing damage on both Russia’s army and oil industry, while Putin’s forces are making smaller gains at the front line amid heavy casualties.
U.S. and European leaders increasingly see signs of Russia conducting probing attacks to test NATO’s resolve, including Russian cruise missiles that have landed in Poland and drones flown into Romania.
Putin’s goal in attacking NATO during a continuing war with Ukraine, if it happens, would be to fracture the alliance, the U.S. officials said.
“The question mark is how the United States would respond in that case,” said Heather Conley, senior fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, on a possible Russian incursion. “It has always been a goal [of Russia’s] to challenge the credibility of NATO and to separate the United States from its allies.”
With Putin struggling to secure the gains he wants in Ukraine, U.S. intelligence officials have been analyzing whether Moscow intends to escalate its aggressive actions toward European allies in the near term, the people said. The concern is that Putin may become more dangerous when backed into a corner, the U.S. officials said.
The possible threats range from a cyberattack on a NATO country or sending unmarked armed groups to occupy territory to a limited incursion on the alliance’s eastern flank. The time frame for any move by Russia is estimated to happen between this fall and 2029, according to the U.S. intelligence assessments.
The likelihood of the most extreme scenario—a limited land incursion—is low, but gets higher as time goes on, according to the reports. Such a move has always been considered extremely unlikely because it would trigger NATO’s Article 5, which commits members to collective defense. But Article 5 isn’t as clear about NATO’s response to cyber or hybrid threats.
“This has always been NATO’s challenge to respond to a sub-Article Five attack, and it’s been very true that to this point, NATO allies have preferred not to escalate,” Conley said. When Russia launched a series of cyberattacks on Estonia in 2007, for example, the country chose to manage the crisis bilaterally.
Spokesmen for the Defense Department and NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe declined to discuss sensitive intelligence. A spokesperson for the Office of the Director for National Intelligence didn’t respond to a request for comment.
“We are always thinking through and preparing for any number of scenarios. NATO is watching and we are ready to deter and defend as necessary, which we continue to demonstrate,” said Col. Martin O’Donnell, a NATO spokesman.
The new assessments compound existing concerns among U.S. officials about a shortfall in certain critical munitions. In addition to certain long- and short-range missiles, other stores of critical air defenses are also low, including Patriot, SM-3 and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense interceptors, as well as Thaad radars and air defense artillery units, officials said.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell called claims of munition shortages false. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said the U.S. military had “more than enough” munitions to “serve all of President Trump’s strategic goals,” while adding that the president has urged defense contractors to produce more munitions.
“We have everything required to strike at the time and place of the President’s choosing,” Parnell said. “Across multiple combatant commands, we have already executed successful operations while maintaining a deep, ready arsenal to defend our people and our interests. Any adversary who confuses media noise with American weakness will discover the truth the hard way.”
In a potential conflict with Russia, weapons such as the Precision Strike Missile and Army Tactical Missile Systems, both of which are fired by the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, and Stinger missiles are crucial to repel a land invasion, said Tom Karako of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
The shortfall of critical munitions has sparked a debate within the U.S. government about declining weapons stocks as Trump weighs next steps in Iran. Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently warned the White House of fewer air-defense interceptors, The Wall Street Journal previously reported. The issue is a concern for Caine, who believes that the low inventories wouldn’t preclude a resumption of major combat operations against Iran, but would add to the risk.
Analysts outside the government have repeatedly cautioned that the expenditure of munitions in the Middle East could hamper the U.S.’s ability to deter adversaries around the globe, including not only Russia but also China.
A recent report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies covered the seven key munitions that had been used in the war with Iran. For example, the updated report estimates that the U.S. has expended 1,060-1,430 Patriot missiles in the Iran war, leaving as few as 870 in America’s arsenal.
“If it’s just a question of fighting Iran, even though we’ve used half of the interceptors, a little more, we still have half of them left. So we could go on against Iran for quite some time,” said Mark Cancian, a co-author of the CSIS report. “The problem is that the Pentagon is now very worried about what this does in the Western Pacific with China.”
