An IZOD IndyCar Series race will take place in May 2014 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, after approval of the event on Thursday during a meeting of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway board of directors.

It will be the first time the IndyCar Series has competed on the Speedway road course, which will undergo reconfiguration this fall and next spring to create more passing zones and fan-friendly vantage points.

More details about the new race, reconfigured road course and other plans for the Month of May will be announced at a media event Tuesday, Oct. 1 at IMS.

The Associated Press has learned that Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan will not return to KV Racing next season and is finalizing a deal to join Chip Ganassi Racing.

Two people familiar with Kanaan's plan said Friday that the Brazilian is nearing a signed contract with Ganassi. They spoke on condition of anonymity because Ganassi has not announced the move.

The 38-year-old Kanaan will join a lineup that includes Indy 500 winners Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon, and Charlie Kimball. Franchitti and Dixon have combined to win six IndyCar titles.

Kanaan is the 2004 series champion. He joined KV Racing before the 2011 season when his sponsorship ran out with Andretti Autosport, and he was left scrambling for a ride. He scored his breakthrough win at Indy in May.

“Since my racing accident in Houston, I have been in the expert care of some of the leading doctors and nurses, all of whom have made my health, my safety and my recovery their top priority. I am eternally grateful for the medical care I have received over the last several weeks. I’d also like to thank my family and friends for their unbelievable support.

One month removed from the crash and based upon the expert advice of the doctors who have treated and assessed my head and spinal injuries post accident, it is their best medical opinion that I must stop racing. They have made it very clear that the risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long term well-being. Based on this medical advice, I have no choice but to stop.

Racing has been my life for over 30 years and it’s really tough to think that the driving side is now over. I was really looking forward to the 2014 season with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, with a goal of winning a fourth Indianapolis 500 and a fifth IndyCar Series championship.

I’d like to thank all my fellow competitors, teammates, crew and sponsors for their incredible support over the course of this amazing ride. I’d also like to thank Hogan Racing, Team KOOL Green and Andretti Green Racing for the opportunities to compete on the racetrack, and especially Target Chip Ganassi Racing, who have become like a family to me since I joined their team back in 2008. Indianapolis 500 runner-up Carlos Munoz is ready for a full-time follow-up.

The 21-year-old Colombian has signed his IndyCar Series contract with Andretti Autosport, becoming its fourth car-and-driver combination. Munoz joins Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe and 2012 IndyCar Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Munoz led 12 laps in the 500, finishing second to Tony Kanaan. He also subbed for the injured Ryan Briscoe in the second Toronto race in July (for Panther Racing) and competed in the season-ending race at Auto Club Speedway.

Munoz won six races and six poles in two Indy Lights seasons.

“I don’t have the words to express right now how I feel,” Munoz said in a statement released by the team. “After so many years of racing and all the sacrifices — leaving my family in Colombia and going to Europe to race, then coming here to the U.S. — but finally I am a professional race car driver in the maximum category in America, IndyCar.”

Munoz’s car number and sponsorship will be announced at a later date, the team said.

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports neemt deel aan het 2014 InydCar seizoen met Mikhail Aleshin. Mikhail Aleshin had ook zijn redenen om in te gaan op het aanbod: "Ik heb voor Schmidt Peterson gekozen voor veel redenen, maar het belangrijkste was dat ik een team zag met veel potentie. INDIANAPOLIS - INDYCAR announced today that Chevrolet and Honda will provide distinct aerodynamic configurations for the IndyCar Series chassis beginning in 2015.

As part of its long-range focus on innovation, INDYCAR announced in June that aerodynamic bodywork "kits" would be introduced and utilized for all 2015 races and include separate specifications for superspeedways and road/street/short ovals.

The bodywork components mated to the Dallara rolling chassis will provide INDYCAR a platform for performance and efficiency developments. Fans can look forward to cars with new, distinctive looks that are branded by the manufacturers. This is a significant element in a suite of technical changes that make the cars capable of achieving higher speeds.

"Aero kits will improve the diversity of the fan experience and renew technical engagement, while providing a controlled cost structure," said Derrick Walker, president of competition and operations, INDYCAR.

The forward-thinking program is relevant to short- and long-term design and development objectives of the global automotive industry and aligns with research and development in multiple technology sectors. Additionally, an entrant's aero kits will be aligned with its manufacturer, with the car incorporating the name given by the supplier.

Beginning with 2016, additional engine manufacturers and/or third party vendors will be eligible to be an INDYCAR-approved supplier. Correspondingly, Chevrolet and Honda will be able to upgrade their aero kits, which will be approved through homologation.

"We are excited to be an IndyCar-approved supplier of an aero kit for our Chevrolet-powered teams beginning with the 2015 racing season," said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing Program Manager for IndyCar Series. "It is a unique situation in non-production based series to provide engines and aerodynamic body kits. This will allow Chevrolet to impact a wider bandwidth of car performance which comes with increased responsibility to our teams to put them in a position to win. We are confident that our collective team of technical partners are capable, enabled and focused to succeed."

Added Honda Performance Development Inc., Technical Director Roger Griffiths: "We're looking forward to the introduction of aero kits in 2015. Along with continuing engine development, aero kits will provide another area for innovation and manufacturer competition. The introduction of bespoke bodywork from Honda and Chevrolet will provide fans with additional brand identification and that can only help IndyCar racing."

Examples of areas open for development by INDYCAR-approved aero configuration manufacturers include sidepods, engine cover and oval front wing main plane and end plates. Potential alterations to the car's undertray in an effort to advance safety are under consideration. On-track testing begins Oct. 6, 2014, and closes Jan. 18, 2015.

Highlights of the regulations:

- No entrant may use more than two aero kits during a season. The 2012 Dallara aero kit is approved as one of the aero kits.

- Dallara will continue to supply a number of standard components that affect aerodynamic performance.

- For the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race, an entrant may use more than one aero kit during practice sessions. The aero kits utilized in qualifications must be used in the race.

- Entrants will be charged no more than $75,000 per aero kit by the supplier, inclusive of all components, but excluding fasteners. A 2016 upgrade kit will cost no more than $15,000.

- Six days of pre-production testing have been approved, with each supplier using a maximum of two cars from entrants. Engine mileage accrued will not count against the entrants' 10,000-mile-per-year allocation or engine count.

The aerodynamic platforms will complement engine manufacturer competition that returned to the IndyCar Series in 2012 following a six-year period in which Honda was the sole supplier.

For the 2014 season, both manufacturers will supply consumer-relevant 2.2-liter, twinturbocharged V6 engines using E85 fuel.

Takuma Sato will return to A.J. Foyt’s No. 14 ABC Supply Co. Honda in the 2014 IndyCar Series season, the team announced Tuesday. This marks the first time since 2011 Sato will stay in the same team in consecutive seasons; he moved from KV Racing to Rahal Letterman Lanigan between 2011 and 2012, and from RLL to Foyt last offseason.

“This team is really special for me,” Sato said. “I always felt that the team was behind me and it gave me the confidence to go for the win in races. I’m very excited to continue to build this great relationship. We know what we need to focus on next year. We are anxious to test the new Honda (twin turbo) engine. From what I hear, the engine will put us in a great position to be up front more often in 2014.”

Sebastian Saavedra will join KV Racing Technology for Wednesday’s IndyCar Series test at Sonoma Raceway, and he will be part of the team’s 2014 program alongside Sebastien Bourdais.

Details of the Saavedra deal will come during a Wednesday news conference, but the 23-year-old Colombian will partner with Bourdais as he did last year at Dragon Racing.

Dragon is not competing full time at the moment, although team owner Jay Penske has said he will participate in the Indianapolis 500.

Saavedra has competed in 38 IndyCar Series races with minimal success. He has never led a race lap and has finished in the top 10 only twice, both times last season.

Saavedra made his IndyCar debut with Bryan Herta Autosport in the 2010 Indianapolis 500, then spent the next season with Conquest Racing. With AFS Racing’s Gary Peterson as a backer, he ran in 2012 as part of the Andretti Autosport contingent for three races.

His eighth-place finish last year at Baltimore is a career best.

Sauber has named Simona De Silvestro as “an affiliated driver”. The 25-year-old Swiss women has been racing in the United States since 2006, competing in Indycar since 2010, when she was Indy 500 “Rookie of the Year”. She finished second in Houston last year. The goal is to take part in a preparation programme with Sauber, with the goal of gaining a Superlicence and preparing for a race seat in Formula 1 for 2015. The programme will include on track testing, simulator training, as well as mental and physical preparation.

“This is a major step towards me achieving a life-long dream and I’m so happy to have the opportunity to take this step with such a great team,” the Swiss girl said. “The Sauber F1 Team is a team with a legacy and the only Swiss team in Formula 1, which I think makes this even more exciting. I can’t thank Monisha Kaltenborn and Peter Sauber enough for their support and belief in my abilities and for giving me this chance.”

Sauber team principal Monisha Kaltenborn said: “Simona’s ambition is to enter Formula 1 in 2015. We regard her as a very talented race driver, and we, therefore, decided to take her on board as an “affiliated driver” and support her on her way to the pinnacle of motorsport.”

De Silvestro is expected to continue to race in Indycar this year but will return to Europe for tests with Sauber.

Jacques Villeneuve is set to return to the Indianapolis 500 19 years after he won the event.

The Canadian is expected to be announced this week in a third entry for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, alongside Simon Pagenaud and Mikhail Aleshin.

He raced in the then Champcar series in 1994 and 1995. He scored his maiden win at Elkhart Lake in his first season and went on to win both the title and the 500 the following year, before heading to F1 with Williams.

Villeneuve, who turns 43 in April, is also competing in rallycross this year.

Waar teambaas Ed Carpenter in de tien Indy 500’s niet verder kwam dan een vijfde plaats, kwam Hildebrand al eens bijzonder dichtbij de overwinning. Tijdens zijn rookie seizoen in 2011 leidde de Amerikaan tot de laatste bocht, waar hij zich liet verrassen door achterblijver Charlie Kimball en kwam hard in aanraking met de muur. Dan Wheldon won deze race uiteindelijk, Hildebrand gleed uiteindelijk nog wel als tweede over de eindstreep.

De IndyCar Series heeft verschillende wijzigingen doorgevoerd in het puntensysteem van de raceklasse. De puntenverdeling voor coureurs blijft voor de meeste races gelijk, maar tijdens de drie 500 mijlsraces (Indianapolis, Pocono, Fontana) zijn er dubbele punten te verdienen. Tevens zijn er grote veranderingen doorgevoerd voor punten in de kwalificatie voor de Indy 500 en heeft IndyCar gridpenalties als gevolg van te vroege motorwissels afgeschaft.

De grootste impact op het kampioenschap zal komen van de dubbele punten in de 500 mijlsraces, waarmee IndyCar deze races extra gewicht wil geven voor het kampioenschap. Een zege in een 500 mijlsrace levert dus geen 50, maar 100 punten op.

Tijdens de Indianapolis 500 kan dit puntenaantal nog verder worden verhoogt. In de zaterdagkwalificatie voor de legendarische race, waar coureurs strijden voor een plekje op de 33 wagens tellende grid, zijn er voor de snelste coureur 33 punten te verdienen, 32 punten zijn er weggelegd voor de nummer twee, 31 voor de derde snelste en uiteindelijk één punt voor de coureur die de 33ste tijd rijdt.

De negen snelste rijders van de zaterdagkwalificatie op Indianapolis strijden op zondag in de Fast Nine shootout om de pole position, welke vervolgens ook nog eens negen punten oplevert. Ook hier loopt het puntentotaal af met acht punten voor de coureur die zich als tweede kwalificeert, zeven punten voor de nummer drie en één punt voor de langzaamste coureur van de Fast Nine.

Fabrikanten kampioenschap

Ook in het onderlinge kampioenschap tussen motorfabrikanten Chevrolet en Honda zijn er veranderingen doorgevoerd. Per race scoort de top vijf in de einduitslag punten voor het fabrikantenkampioenschap, mits ze niet meer dan de maximaal toegestane vier motoren per seizoen hebben gebruikt. De punten die coureurs voor het fabrikantenkampioenschap scoren zijn gelijk aan de punten die ze zelf scoren.

Fabrikanten scoren of verliezen echter ook punten met betrouwbaarheid. Per motor die de voorgeschreven 2.500 mijl / 4.000 km haalt ontvangt de fabrikant tien bonuspunten. Indien een motor vroegtijdig moet worden gewisseld kost dit de fabrikant juist tien punten. De fabrikant die per race de meeste ronden leidt mag verder nog twee bonuspunten bij zijn totaal optellen, terwijl het leiden van tenminste één ronde of het pakken van de pole position één punt opleveren.

Gridpenalties verleden tijd

Coureurs hoeven dit seizoen niet bang te zijn voor gridpenalties als gevolg van motorwissels, maar mogelijk gaan ze het wel op een andere manier voelen. Wanneer een team besluit een motor te wisselen kost dit de coureur in kwestie tien punten in het kampioenschap. Een motorwissel zonder goedkeuring van IndyCar zorgt er zelfs voor dat wagen tijdens de volgende race als laatste moet starten.

Eventuele straffen als gevolg van motorwissels zullen niet tijdens de Indianapolis 500 worden uitgevoerd en blijven staan tot de race na de Indy 500: de Chevrolet Indy Duals in Detroit.

“Fans zagen niets in het concept dat coureurs gridstraffen kregen voor motorwissels, zeker wanneer het geen keuze van het team zelf was,” verklaarde IndyCar hoofd van competitie Derrick Walker. “Met de hulp van de motorfabrikanten hebben we onze races weten te verbeteren, zonder verwarring te scheppen.”

The familiar No. 4 car sponsored over the years by Pennzoil, Delphi and the National Guard wasn't on IndyCar's grid at last month's season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Fla., and it won't be at Sunday's race in Long Beach, Calif., either.

Panther's staff has been reduced to a minimal size, and only one chassis remains at the shop. Former Panther mechanics are working for other race teams. Doug Barnes, one of Panther's staples, will work with Martin Plowman at A.J. Foyt Racing in May.

Several IndyCar teams have already acquired Panther equipment, including two yet-to-be-announced programs for the 500. The team that will field Stefan Wilson is one of them.
