En kun je effectief dat gevaar niet managen, zoals je broekpissers, moet je je A afvragen of je wel op je plek zit, B, zijn dat dan om die reden geen mensen die zich hier voor aan gaan melden.

Russia-based creators—including YouTubers, as well as bloggers and website owners—will receive their final payout this month, according to a message from Google to users reviewed by Reuters.

"Assuming you have no active payment holds and meet the minimum payment thresholds," payments will be disbursed between August 21 and 26, Google's message said.

Google's spokesperson offered little clarification to Reuters and Bleeping Computer, saying only that "we will no longer be able to make payments to Russia-based AdSense accounts that have been able to continue monetizing traffic outside of Russia. As a result, we will be deactivating these accounts effective August 2024."

It seems likely, though, that Russia passing a law in March—banning advertising on websites, blogs, social networks, or any other online sources published by a "foreign agent," as Reuters reported in February—perhaps influenced Google's update. The law also prohibited foreign agents from placing ads on sites, and under the law, foreign agents could include anti-Kremlin politicians, activists, and media. With new authority, Russia may have further retaliated against Google, potentially forcing Google to give up the last bit of monetization available to Russia-based creators increasingly censored online.

State assembly member and Putin ally Vyacheslav Volodin said that the law was needed to stop financing "scoundrels" allegedly "killing our soldiers, officers, and civilians," Reuters reported.

One Russian YouTuber with 11.4 million subscribers, Valentin Petukhov, suggested on Telegram that Google shut down AdSense because people had managed to "bypass payment blocks imposed by Western sanctions on Russian banks," Bleeping Computer reported.

According to Petukhov, the wording in Google's message to users was "kind of strange," making it unclear what account holders should do next.

"Even though the income from monetization has fallen tenfold, it hasn't disappeared completely," Petukhov said.

YouTube still spotty in Russia
Google's decision to end AdSense in Russia follows reports of a mass YouTube outage that Russian Internet monitoring service Sboi.rf reported is still impacting users today.

Officials in Russia claim that YouTube has been operating at slower speeds because Google stopped updating its equipment in the region after the invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reported.

This outage and the slower speeds led "subscribers of over 135 regional communication operators in Russia" to terminate "agreements with companies due to problems with the operation of YouTube and other Google services," the Russian tech blog Habr reported.

As Google has tried to resist pressure from Russian lawmakers to censor content that officials deem illegal, such as content supporting Ukraine or condemning Russia, YouTube had become one of the last bastions of online free speech, Reuters reported. It's unclear how ending monetization in the region will impact access to anti-Kremlin reporting on YouTube or more broadly online in Russia. Last February, a popular journalist with 1.64 million subscribers on YouTube, Katerina Gordeeva, wrote on Telegram that "she was suspending her work due to the law," Reuters reported.

"We will no longer be able to work as before," Gordeeva said. "Of course, we will look for a way out."

Russian forces are pummeling Ukrainian positions along the front lines, Ukrainian military officials said, as attacks on Russian soil by Ukraine continue.

“The West is fighting us with the hands of the Ukrainians,” he said, repeating his frequent depiction of the 30-month war, which he started, as a proxy campaign against Russia by the West. “The enemy will certainly get the response he deserves, and all our goals, without doubt, will be accomplished.”

With his top general, Valery V. Gerasimov, seated a few feet away, Mr. Putin directed his military to push out Ukraine’s troops and to work with the border guard service to “ensure the reliable protection of the state border” — an acknowledgment that Russia had failed in that regard.

The Kursk region’s acting governor, Aleksei Smirnov, was shown telling Mr. Putin by video link that 28 towns and villages were under Ukrainian control. He said Ukrainian troops had pushed seven miles into Russian territory along a 25-mile front, that 12 civilians had died in the fighting and that 2,000 people were believed to be in Ukrainian-held territory.

His claims could not be independently verified, though the description of the extent of Ukraine’s advance roughly accorded with analysts’ estimates. On social media on Monday, the head of Ukraine’s armed forces, Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, claimed control of more than twice as much territory, “about 1,000 square kilometers.”

While Russian civilians have previously been killed by Ukrainian shelling near the border, this is the first time that Ukrainian forces have seized a foothold in Russian territory. Mr. Smirnov said that 121,000 people had fled the border area, and that the authorities were working to evacuate another 59,000.

n interviews, some of the region’s residents said they were shocked at the turn of events, though there had long been speculation that Ukraine might attack.

“No one could have imagined it would come to a takeover,” said Natalia, 31, a manicurist in Zaoleshenka, a settlement near the border. She asked her last name be withheld for her safety.

Russian officials warned that Ukraine’s incursion could expand. In the neighboring Belgorod region, the authorities said they were evacuating the Krasnoyaruzhski border district, and that 11,000 people had already left. And Mr. Putin, in his televised meeting, told the governor of a third border region — Bryansk — that while it appeared “relatively calm” for now, “this doesn’t mean that the same situation will remain tomorrow.”

The incursion into Russia marked a significant shift in the war’s narrative.

Since launching their full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russian troops have expanded their hold to more than 18 percent of Ukraine. A Ukrainian counteroffensive last year failed; this year, the war has been mainly a slog in the country’s east, with Russian troops grinding forward sometimes a few feet at a time. Ukrainian morale has sunk, and pressure has built on Ukrainian leaders to negotiate a deal.

The incursion into Russian territory, far from the front line, was kept so secret that some Ukrainian soldiers and U.S. officials have said they did not know about it in advance.

There is little sign so far, however, that the shock is driving Russia to redirect frontline forces from eastern Ukraine. Instead of pulling those brigades, Russia appeared to be redeploying lower-level units to the Kursk region, according to a briefing on Sunday by the Institute for the Study of War, a U.S.-based think tank.

The analysis described the Russian force as “hastily assembled” and “ill-prepared” for a coordinated response.

Ukrainian troops along the eastern front line said they were still feeling pressure from the Russians.

“Our guys do not feel any relief,” said Artem Dzhepko, a press officer with Ukraine’s National Police Brigade, which is fighting near the strategically important town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

Russian forces there were still using as many as 10 aerial bombs a day, he said.

On Facebook, Ukraine’s military reported late Sunday that the Russian Army had tried four times to break through defenses along the front line at Toretsk, near the towns of Zalizne, Druzhba and Niu York. Two attacks were repelled; two were ongoing.

On Monday morning, the attacks near Toretsk continued, said Yevhen Strokan, a senior lieutenant and commander of a combat drone platoon in the 206th Territorial Defense Battalion.

“I don’t feel a decrease in intensity,” Mr. Strokan said. “Everything is being assaulted in the same way.”

The Kursk offensive, he said, might need more time to draw Russian troops away.

A video circulating on social media shows a T-64BV or T-80BV tank, a UR-77 mine-clearing vehicle, an IMR-2 engineering vehicle, Soviet BTR-80s, and American Stryker APCs, most of which are fitted with anti-drone frames, passing by a Ukrainian mortar team. The 80th Air Assault Brigade is the only unit in Ukraine with such a mix of former Soviet and American equipment, indicating its presence in the Kursk operation.

Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk on Aug. 6, represents the largest cross-border operation by Kyiv since Moscow launched its Ukraine invasion more than two years ago.

The assault, which has sent tens of thousands of people fleeing, marked the most significant attack by a foreign army on Russian territory since World War II.

In response to the fire, the IAEA responded on Aug. 11 that its expert witnesses were "told by ZNPP of an alleged drone attack" on a cooling tower on-site, echoing claims of a drone attack shared by Russian-installed authorities in occupied Zaporizhzhia, CNN reported.

On Aug. 12, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Rossi issued a statement describing damage to the cooling stations, and adding that the agency found no signs of drone debris or evidence that the fire started at the base of the cooling tower.

"The team has not been able to draw definitive conclusions on the basis of the findings and observations so far," the statement from the IAEA read. "The IAEA will continue its overall analysis after additional review and access to the water nozzle distribution level and the cold-water basin."

The files reveal that Russia’s primary goal in a potential conflict with NATO would be to “weaken the enemy’s military and economic potential,” a strategy that could involve targeting civilian sites and critical infrastructure, as seen in Ukraine.

Fabian Hoffmann, a doctoral research fellow at the University of Oslo, explained that the combination of nuclear and conventional strikes outlined in the documents serves as a signal to adversaries to negotiate. “It’s essentially a package to indicate that tensions are escalating and it would be wise to start discussions on settlement,” he said.

The leaked documents reveal that Russia continues to maintain the capability to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on surface ships, despite the 1991 agreement between the Soviet Union and the US to eliminate such weapons.

Russia’s Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, gave a briefing over video link to a televised meeting with the heads of law enforcement on Wednesday, Aug. 7, during which he put a positive spin on the situation in Kursk that was largely contradicted by most other battlefield reports.

It was reported that following the meeting Putin had tasked Alexander Bortnikov, Director of Russia’s Federal Security Service ( FSB) to take over the “counter-terrorism operation” in Kursk, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW)

It came as a surprise to many for him to also be replaced less than a week later by Dyumin, even though he holds the rank of colonel general. It is, however, one that pro-Kremlin bloggers generally seem to be in favor of.

In confirming the appointment on Tuesday, the well-known blogger Rybar wrote that Dyumin’s appointment was “a sign that the security forces, on their own and without interference from Moscow, were unable to solve coordination problems.”

Russian milbloggers see Dyumin’s appointment as the removal of Gerasimov from the military chain of command in the Kursk region and suggest his sidelining may not stop there. He has been accused of ignoring intelligence of the buildup of Ukrainian troops on the border with Kursk and his over-optimistic Aug. 7 briefing on the situation in the Kursk region has been labeled as “outright lies” by many Russian media figures.

The increased bonus will be eligible for all Russian citizens and foreigners who signed up for one-year service between Aug. 1 and the end of 2024.

The document says the payment is intended to provide "additional means of social support" for soldiers and their families. It also recommends that Russian occupation authorities in Ukraine offer an additional sum of 400,000 rubles.

On Tuesday, Russia’s Defence Ministry reported that the Russian army had thwarted an AFU attempt to penetrate deeper into Russian territory around the villages of Kauchuk, Obshchy Kolodez, Snagost, and Alekseyevsky, all situated approximately 26–28 kilometres from the Ukrainian border in the Kursk region’s Korenevsky district.

Klintsevich also suggested that some offensive forces might advance toward the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

"Blocking the land corridor to Crimea along with a heavy strike on the Crimean Bridge by F-16 jets would create a victory narrative that the White House could sell to voters. They will be aiming for this," the "expert" warned Russians.

He added that the purpose of advancements by Ukrainian forces into the Kursk region is to draw in some of Russia’s reserves. If this strategy succeeds, Russia would be unable to "quickly redeploy" forces to the Zaporizhzhia or Kherson areas.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that operations in Russia's Kursk region are seen as a "pivotal moment in the war with the potential to alter its trajectory."

Dmitry Likhoviy, a representative of the “Tavria” Group of Forces, disclosed that Russia is transferring units towards the Kursk direction from Transnistria. He noted that the Kursk region has "the most gaps in its defense lines."

Ukraine sentenced in absentia Kremlin propagandist and former top director at RT, Anton Krasovsky, to five years in prison for his calls to murder Ukrainian children, the Prosecutor General's Office said on Aug. 13.

The statement did not mention Krasovsky by name, but details of the case indicate that Krasovsky is the person in question.

Krasovsky was convicted for his calls to "burn and drown Ukrainian children" on air on one of his shows on the Russian state-run channel RT, formerly known as Russia Today. He also said that Ukraine "should not exist at all."

The propagandist was sentenced under the charges of public calls for genocide and calls for a violent overthrow of Ukraine's constitutional order.

The verdict comes on top of an earlier 5-year sentence issued against Krasovsky in February 2023 for supporting the Russian invasion and public calls for genocide.

Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi said on Aug. 13 that Ukraine's Armed Forces advanced 3 kilometers and took control over another 40 square kilometers of Russian territory.

Zelensky said he is "constantly in touch" with Syrskyi about the situation in Kursk.

"Despite the difficult, intense battles, the advance of our forces in Kursk Oblast continues," Zelensky said.

"Humanitarian solutions for these territories" are being established, Zelensky added.

“Thanks to the high-quality and well-coordinated work of our brigade and attached units, the 72nd Brigade held the line,” the brigade said.

The Russian command sent a lot of infantry fighting vehicles to the attack, which were supposed to deliver troops to Ukrainian positions.

Fighting in the Kursk region
Fighting began in the Kursk region last week. Russia claimed that Ukrainian forces allegedly breached the border.

Ukraine officially confirmed the operation by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Kursk region only today. This was announced by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the meeting of the Staff of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief.

According to Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, about one thousand square kilometers of the Kursk region are under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Meanwhile, according to DeepState, the Russian army has lost control of approximately 44 settlements.

The Russian KBP Instrument Design Bureau has unveiled the Kh-BPLA guided missile designed for use from unmanned aerial vehicles.

This new missile model, along with its specifications, was presented at the Army-2024 defense technology exhibition in Moscow.

Building on the technological advancements from the Kornet anti-tank missile system and the Krasnopol high-precision artillery shell, the Kh-BPLA (X-UAV) missile has been developed for deployment from UAVs against ground and surface targets.

These targets include concentrations of enemy personnel, unarmored, and lightly armored vehicles.

The Kh-BPLA missile inherits its primary design features from the 9M133 Kornet-D anti-tank missile but is heavier, weighing 32 kilograms compared to the Kornet-D’s 26 kilograms.

Despite the weight increase, the interchangeable warhead’s weight remains similar, with the high-explosive version weighing 6 kilograms, and the thermobaric warhead weighing 3.2 kilograms.

It should be noted that some data in the published bulletins may be inaccurate, as suggested by the 10 kilogram discrepancy between the weight of the missile in the transport and launch canister and without it.

The missile uses a reflected laser beam for guidance, where the drone illuminates the target until impact. This guidance system allows the missile to hit targets at a distance of up to 8 kilometers and an altitude of up to 4,000 meters.

Apparently, the guidance module located in the nose of the missile is likely derived from the Krasnopol artillery system, which uses the same guidance method.

The development of the aviation version of the Kornet-D missile was first reported in 2021, with Russian media releasing footage of test launches from the Orion reconnaissance and strike drone.

It was also reported that the missile had been tested with the Forpost UAV and the Ka-52M attack helicopter.

Militarnyi recently reported that, at this same exhibition, Russian designers presented an unmanned self-propelled artillery system based on the D-30 howitzer.

Russian defense shows are known for the concept designs and models of boats and submarines which rarely get built. The current climate the market seems particularly challenging for them. Now Russian defense companies are emulating the Ukrainian and building uncrewed surface vessels. One new type appears to have a Starlink antenna.

The war in the Black Sea has been shaped, maybe even defined, by maritime drones. So far it has been a Ukrainian dominated arena, with Russia lagging behind Ukraine in the adoption of uncrewed surface vessels (USVs). Now Russia appears to be slowly entering the game with increasingly credible designs.

The latest type, the Murena-300S appears generally comparable with Ukrainian types. And more significantly, it appears to have a Starlink antenna.

The Murena (Moray Eel) is approximately the same size as the Ukrainian Magura V5 and Sea Navy designs. According to specifications shared at the Army-2024 defense show it has a top speed of 45 knots. It has a range of 500 km, but appears intended for inshore missions more than open water operations. The producer, LLC KB Center for Unmanned Systems, advertises it for Defense of Naval facilities, mine laying, mine clearance, patrolling and reconnaissance. It is also supposed to perform fire support of ground operations from the sea. Realistically its claimed 500kg payload could translate into a large explosive charge.

The vessel has a simple metal semi-planing powerboat hull similar to the classic Soviet-era ‘Progress’ series. This is combined with a relatively low profile superstructure. Unlike most, but not all, Ukrainian designs it has an outboard motor. There are some signs that the vessel displayed is crudely constructed. It is unclear whether this is straightforward poor workmanship, or simply an expediency for a one-way vessel. This may make it more vulnerable to defensive gunfire. USV combat is not a beauty contest.

Starlink satellite communications have played an important part in enabling Ukrainian drones to operate so effectively. Along with the rival Kymeta system, it allows the drones to be controlled in real time. This has permitted a human-in-the-loop approach to attacking enemy ships, with the pilot ashore literally guiding the USV into the target. This has only been possible thanks to the data rate and reliability of these systems.

The apparent Starlink antenna on the Murena-300S has been hidden under camouflage netting but its distinctive shape is evident. The corners of the square antenna are also just visible in photographs from the event.

Russian troops can purchase Starlink abroad with numbers of terminals acquired on the open market. Since its use by Russian troops came to light earlier this year, the Pentagon teamed up with SpaceX, who make it, to block Russia from using it. How effective this will be remains to be seen. Certainly the inclusion of an antenna on the vessel suggests that it isn’t entirely written off.

Possibly the antenna is for a different satellite network, or possibly it is only a prop intended as a ruse. However, while the manufacturer doesn’t call out the Starlink, it does claim “On-line Interference-proof GNSS” which fits. As well as this, the USV is advertised as having an inertial navigation system (INS), electrooptical sensors, infrared thermal imaging and LIDAR.

Russian companies have designed a number of USVs in response to Ukraine’s. The most credible so far has been the BBKN Dandelion which is similar in size and role to the Murena. The two types appear similar in capabilities. But if the Russians can successfully employ Starlink then the Murena will clearly have the edge

The actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Russia's Kursk Oblast are defensive, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said during a briefing, as reported by Polskie Radio.

Responding to journalists' questions about whether NATO members are concerned that weapons sent to Ukraine for defense are being used on Russian territory, he stated that Kyiv's actions are defensive.

Tusk noted that what Russian troops and Russian aviation are doing to Ukrainian territory bears signs of genocide and inhumane crimes.

"And Ukraine has every right to wage war in a way that most effectively paralyzes Russia in its aggressive intentions," the Polish Prime Minister said.

He added that the Polish side maintains constant contact with the Ukrainian side at the highest political level. He also admitted that he was not surprised by "such an unconventional and for some unexpected change in the situation at the front."

"But of course, it's not about consultations where someone in Kyiv agrees with me on which day and where someone will move," explained the head of the Polish government.

The country's Prime Minister emphasized that Warsaw's position on the war in Ukraine has not changed.

"We support Ukraine in a war that is a defensive war," he stated.

The woman was in touch with Ukrainian intelligence via Signal app, Russian authorities say.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested an employee of a military unit in southern Russia for allegedly spying for Ukraine.

According to a report issued by the FSB in the Rostov region, the woman was already in contact with the Ukrainian side when she joined a unit in the Southern Military District in January 2023.

“She collected information of various kinds about the arsenals, bases and warehouses that are part of the district,” the FSB was quoted saying in the statement, Russian state news agency TASS reported Tuesday.

The arrest comes one week after Ukrainian troops launched a surprise offensive into Russian territory last Tuesday, pushing into parts of the southern Kursk region, before expanding the campaign to the neighboring Belgorod region.

According to the FSB report, the woman had contacted representatives of Ukraine’s military intelligence through the Signal messaging app, which was recently blocked in Russia for alleged “violations” of the country’s legislation.

"She handed over the collected data to a foreign intelligence service during correspondence in the messenger," the FSB statement continued.

The Russian authorities did not disclose the woman’s identity who, they say, is now being detained on charges of high treason.

On Monday, Ukraine's top commander Oleksandr Syrskyi claimed that the Kyiv's forces had gained control of 1,000 square kilometers of Russian territory, marking the biggest incursion since the start of Russian President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion in 2022.

The convoy, comprising Russian military vehicles and personnel, was annihilated on the night of August 9 near the village of Oktyabrskoye in the Rylsky district of Kursk Oblast. A 48-year-old resident of a Kursk village was detained for spreading video footage of the attack’s aftermath online.

As reported by ASTRA, the obliterated column included troops from military unit 13140 and military unit 72164.

Family members reported that some soldiers from military unit 72164, initially stationed in Kursk on August 6, were sent on a mission to Ukraine the next day. They were en route to Vovchansk but were diverted towards Kursk.

Surviving soldiers from unit 72164 started contacting their families from Moscow. Those unscathed were redeployed to positions near Kursk, though they were unaware of their new exact locations. Some surviving soldiers allegedly deserted, their whereabouts unknown.

On August 9, Defense Intelligence special forces raided the occupied Kinburn spit in Mykolaiv Oblast. DIU reported the destruction of six units of armored vehicles of the Russian Federation and the elimination of about 30 enemy soldiers.

Later, a video emerged of how in early August the Tsyklon group of the DIU legion struck the Russian military on the Kinburn spit: scouts hit equipment, observation points, and personnel from drones. The exact date of this is not known.

Earlier, on August 6, the special forces of the Artan active operations unit and the Maritime Center of the Ukrainian Armed Forces conducted an operation on the Tendra spit in the temporarily occupied part of Kherson Oblast.

Russian media claim an alleged drone attack on the airfield Savasleyka in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, as well as on facilities in Voronezh Oblast.

One of the local groups on Vkontakte reported about 10 hits at the Savasleyka airfield and the closure of the city of Kulebaki, where the air base is located. This statement is distributed by various Telegram channels, but there is currently no confirmation of these claims.

Russian mass media Astra reports that locals allegedly saw drones over the settlements of Veletma and Savasleyka, which are not far from the airfield.

Savasleyka is the base of Russian MiG-31K supersonic fighters, carriers of Kinzhal missiles. The air base is located about 600 kilometers from Ukraine.

In the video at the beginning of the report, a local filmed the flight of a drone and accompanied it with the comment: "Savasleyka bound... So fed up with them."

The second video shows the work of air defense against a drone. At the end it explodes, but you can't see where exactly because of the trees.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces reported that overnight on August 8, the Defense Forces successfully struck the airfield in Russia's Lipetsk Oblast – during the attack, the Ukrainian troops hit warehouses with guided aerial bombs and a number of other objects near the airbase.

LIGA.net's source noted: the SBU strike in cooperation with the Armed Forces hit the Lipetsk-2 airfield, where there were several dozen fighter jets, helicopters and warehouses with more than 700 anti-tank missiles. After the strike of the Ukrainian drones, a powerful explosion occurred, which caused a chain detonation and a large-scale fire on a large part of the airfield, the interlocutor noted.

Due to the detonation of ammunition, the Russian authorities announced the evacuation of residents.

Germany’s federal prosecutor general is seeking a man identified as Volodymyr Z. for privacy reasons. He is a 44-year-old Ukrainian diving professional who was last seen in Poland and has since disappeared, according to reports by ARD, the S�ddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit.

The subsea explosions in September 2022 took out three of the four Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines transporting gas from Russia to Germany and sent geopolitical shockwaves around the world. There are continuing unanswered questions about who was responsible and fingers pointed variously at Russia, Ukraine, the U.S. and the U.K.

Nord Stream 1 had been in operation since 2011; Nord Stream 2 was completed but had not yet begun pumping gas by the time of the attacks. The pipelines had been enormously controversial, with Ukraine, the U.S., Poland and others criticizing Germany for tying itself to Russian gas exports — a position that became untenable following Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Denmark and Sweden also opened probes into the explosions, but those investigations were suspended without naming a suspect.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously denied Kyiv was involved.

The German prosecutor's investigation into the blasts also points to two other Ukrainian nationals — a couple who run a diving school in Ukraine where Zhuravlov worked as a diving instructor.

Authorities believe Yevhen and Svitlana U. attached the explosive charges to the pipelines. According to the investigation, the three expert divers were in the Baltic Sea in September 2022 aboard a German sailing yacht called "Andromeda."

According to the S�ddeutsche Zeitung, the German prosecutor had listed Yevhen U. and his wife Svitlana as possible accomplices, but the report does not specify if it had issued an arrest warrant against them.

The two have denied knowing Zhuravlov and said that they were on vacation in Bulgaria when the attack took place.

According to the media reports, prosecutors believe Zhuravlov last lived in a village west of Warsaw before disappearing.

German authorities transmitted the arrest warrant to Poland in June after they were able to identify the man thanks to photos and statements from witnesses, Die Zeit reported. According to the German media, however, it’s not clear why the Polish authorities failed to arrest the man and didn't respond to Germany’s request for legal assistance.

More than 100 drones attacked various targets in Russia overnight, including several air bases. One of the targets was the Savasleyka air base in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

In the Nizhny Novgorod region, governor Gleb Nikitin claimed in a Telegram channel that air defense forces were “operating” in the Kulebak municipal district “to suppress the attack of fixed-wing unmanned aircraft.”

“All measures are being taken to minimize the consequences,” the governor reported.

The Baza telegram channel published a video showing attack drones flying towards the Savasleyka air base.

Also, more than 35 drones attacked facilities in Voronezh region, the region’s governor, Alexander Gusev, said on his Telegram channel. The attack began around 22:00 Moscow time on August 13.

In Voronezh region, according to Russian telegram channels, the city of Borisoglebsk, where the military airfield of the same name is located, was hit.

According to unconfirmed reports, a fire broke out at the airfield as a result of the attack, the Astra Telegram channel reports. Videos from Borysoglebsk were posted on social media, and explosions were heard.

After a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June at which the international pariahs discussed mutual cooperation, Moscow has delivered a gift to Pyongyang.

Russia sent, drumroll, 447 goats to the North Korean city of Rason, the Russian agriculture safety watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor said in a press release.

The goats, which were exported from Russia’s Leningrad region, represent a first batch of farm animals that Russia intends to deliver to North Korea. The goats will provide dairy products to local children to relieve North Korea’s food shortages, mainly caused by government-related policies, with the situation getting worse during the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Human Rights Watch, 10.7 million out of 25.9 million people in North Korea are malnourished, and 18 percent of children have impaired growth and development due to chronic malnutrition.

“Goat farms with a large capacity have been built in districts and counties of Nampho Municipality in the DPRK. As a result, foundation has been consolidated to smoothly provide dairy products for the children in the municipality,” reported North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency on the same day, indirectly confirming the shipment.

Russia has been cozying up to North Korea since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. North Korea has openly supported the assault and has been accused of delivering weaponry to help Russian forces on the battlefield.

Both Russia and North Korea have in the past denied claims that Pyongyang supplies weapons or ammunition to the Kremlin’s forces.

During Putin’s recent trip to North Korea, the two leaders signed an agreement that commits them to “mutual assistance in the event of aggression against one of the participants,” and is part of a wide-ranging treaty covering everything from education to agriculture and tourism, according to Russian state media.

The sanctions prohibit the import and export of many goods. Financial transactions with different companies and individuals with ties to Russia are also not allowed. Six months ago, the total number of criminal investigations stood at 45, the Public Prosecution Service said in March. There were only 27 such cases at the end of December.

Since the sanctions will last longer, it was expected that more companies will try to circumvent the punitive measures, a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service said in March, when two-thirds of cases were related to violations of import and export sanctions. The other third concerned suspicions about violations of financial sanctions.

"Every violation of the sanctions is one too many," said State Secretary Aukje de Vries, who handles Customs office policy for the Cabinet. As of July 2023, Ukraine’s Military Intelligence was reporting that 55-60 thousand Ukrainian men were likely to have been forcibly mobilized.

It was clear from September 2022 that a major reason for Russia’s fake ‘referendum’ on occupied parts of Donetsk; Luhansk; Kherson and Zaporizhzhia oblasts was to claim that the occupied territory and its citizens had ‘become Russian’ with this opening the possibility of forcibly mobilizing a huge number of Ukrainians.

In late December 2023, the Mariupol City Council posted an ‘instruction’ from a so-called ‘Donetsk people’s republic district educational department’ to place students born in 2007 on the military register, with all such 17-year-olds to be forced, from January 2024, to register at the Russian occupation military recruitment office and thus be in danger of open or covert mobilization into Russia’s army. It is a war crime to force people on occupied territory to serve in the invading state’s army, yet Russia began conscripting Ukrainians in occupied Crimea soon after its invasion in 2014, and is continuing.

Nor is Russia’s claim that conscripts are not sent into battle to be believed, and never was. There was evidence back in 2014-15 that young conscripts in Russia were being forced to sign contracts to serve in the army. The same is almost certainly still happening, with at least 159 conscripts already known to have been killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Unless Russia is defeated, it is only a matter of time before Ukrainians from all occupied territory face forced mobilization or at least conscription into the enemy army.

According to one of them about 150 conscripts are currently in her son’s military unit in the Kursk region. They have been told that “you will follow the stormtroopers, to clear the territory” and are promised benefits and “combat” pay of up to 4,500 rubles ($50) a day. She said her boy was convinced that they will “be sent anyway,” and if they don’t sign, they would face trial.

The woman who the article calls “Elena,” though it is not her real name, said: “They’re putting moral pressure on them, they’re trying to brainwash them and send our children to that hole.”

The mother of another conscript, “Marina” – whose name has also been changed – said that the those in charge of their sons are trying to persuade them to sign because they have been given a quota to fill.

Another conscript, who was evacuated from the border areas, told Verstka that several of his comrades had initially been moved to hospital in Kursk with concussions but were taken away the day before. An officer said that they were being transferred to a military unit in Klintsy in the Bryansk region, but they were not there.

“Everyone understands,” he said, that they were being returned to somewhere near the border so that they could take part in battles again.

Grigory Sverdlin, director of the human rights project “Walk Through the Forest,” says that many of the conscripts were sent from units in other regions to the Kursk region as part of a “business trip.” Some of them came from the Voronezh and Leningrad regions and they understand that fresh lists are already being prepared to send the next groups.

Despite what President Vladimir Putin has said about conscripts not being sent to the battlefield, human rights activists point out that the legislation covering conscription allows recruits to be sent to perform tasks during armed conflicts, including actual fighting.

Following Ukraine’s Aug. 6 incursion, Russian conscripts were killed and captured by the AFU in the Kursk region as evidenced by videos posted on Ukrainian and Russian social media and by some of the relatives of those captured.

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on August 13 that 74 settlements of the Kursk region were under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said that the purpose of the operation in the Kursk region was not to seize foreign territories, but to preserve the lives of citizens and protect Ukrainian territory from Russian attacks.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Ukraine's offensive in the Kursk region was a defensive operation.

The White House advised Vladimir Putin to withdraw his troops from Ukraine if he was worried about the situation in the Kursk region.

Ter informatie! Overtreding sanctieregelingen strafbaar
Sinds het uitbreken van de oorlog tussen Rusland en Oekra�ne zijn er aanvullende sancties, waaronder financi�le sancties, afgekondigd tegen Rusland en Belarus. Ook zijn beperkingen opgelegd met betrekking tot de levering van goederen aan Rusland. Overtreding van sanctieregelingen is strafbaar op basis van de Sanctiewet en de Wet op de economische delicten. De opsporing van overtreding van de financi�le sancties is belegd bij de FIOD, onder leiding van het Functioneel Parket van het Openbaar Ministerie. De FIOD spoort personen en entiteiten op die proberen die sancties te omzeilen of die niet aan de sancties voldoen. De FIOD heeft echter niet de taak om gesanctioneerden of hun bezittingen te traceren en hun vermogen te bevriezen.

The schoolchildren were detained by investigators from the Investigative Committee of Russia together with operational officers from the UFSB and the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The Investigative Committee of Russia reported that since the spring of 2022, 273 cases under the first article and 81 cases under the second have been filed with the courts.

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, said that the Russian authorities “appear to be largely relying on Russian conscripts, and elements of some regular and irregular military units pulled from less critical sectors of the front line to address the ongoing Ukrainian incursion.”

Lithuania’s defense minister, Laurynas Kasciunas, said on Tuesday that Russia was moving troops from its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad to Kursk. Mr. Kasciunas was visiting President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

Ukrainian military officials said that Russian assaults in the Donetsk region had continued unabated over the past week, despite the new Ukrainian offensive. Russian troops have continued to slowly advance in or toward the frontline towns of Chasiv Yar, Niu York, Pokrovsk and Toretsk, they say.

Oleksandr Bordiian, a spokesman for the 32nd Separate Mechanize Brigade, which is fighting near Toretsk, told the Ukrainian news media on Tuesday that Ukraine’s attacks in the Kursk region “have not yet had any impact on the density of assaults and shelling in our direction.” A medic fighting in another brigade near Toretsk also said on Wednesday that there had been no changes on that section of the front.

Military analysts say that Kyiv will need to expand or hold onto its gains in western Russia long enough to compel Moscow to divert significant forces from the battlefield in Ukraine.

Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky, Ukraine’s top commander, told Mr. Zelensky on Wednesday that Ukrainian troops had advanced up to two kilometers, about 1.2 miles, in the Kursk region since the beginning of the day. He also said that more than 100 Russian soldiers had been captured during the day. His claims could not be independently verified.

After quick successes in the early days of the offensive, the Ukrainian advances in the Kursk region appear to have slowed, according to maps of the battlefield compiled by independent analysts. Ukrainian troops are now attacking to the north and south of the bulge they have carved out into Russian territory, but are facing more Russian resistance, the maps show.

Emil Kastehelmi, an analyst with the Finland-based Black Bird Group, which scrutinizes footage from the battlefield, said on Tuesday evening that an attack by Ukrainian troops on Giri, a village southeast of the initial Ukrainian assault and about eight miles from the Ukrainian border, had likely been repelled. “They suffered significant losses and likely had to retreat,” Mr. Kastehelmi wrote on social media.

The Ukrainian raids appear to have a strategy of probing and destabilizing Russian defenses. After several days of Ukrainian attacks on the Belgorod region, which borders the Kursk region, the regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, declared a state of emergency on Wednesday.

Whether Ukraine can continue to conduct these raids depends on the number of troops it can commit to the fight. Its forces are stretched thin, and Kyiv has already sent into the offensive experienced units that were pulled from the front lines in eastern Ukraine.

France’s defense ministry said on Monday that Kyiv’s forces “appear to have reduced the pace of their initial advance, but are consolidating their positions” in the territory they have already captured.

But holding on to a position that can be attacked from multiple sides will prove difficult, analysts say. Mr. Kuzan, of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Center, also noted that any static Ukrainian position would be exposed to Russian airstrikes. Such a dynamic, he said, “immediately invites the use of aviation, guided bombs and ballistic missiles.”

Je vergeet 1 ding. Volgens Russische wetgeving kan en mag Poetin op eigen grondgebied dienstplichtigen inzetten. Vraag me af ook een blik tieners help dat er niet van. Maar in 2022 heeft Poetin nog excuses aangeboden omdat er ook dienstplichtige meegestuurd waren bij de invasie wat dus officieel niet mag.
