Latvia detains two suspected Russian spies
On May 13, the State Security Service of Latvia (VDD) detained two persons on suspicion of gathering intelligence for the purpose of passing it on to Russia.
That’s according to the VDD press service, Ukrinform reports.

Criminal cases against both culprits were initiated on May 2 under Article 85 of the Criminal Code (espionage).

It was noted that the perpetrators had been illegally collecting classified information regarding other persons suspected of espionage and taken into custody. One of the detainees is Sergei Sidorov, who was previously accused of spying for Russia.

On May 15, the court ruled to remand both suspects in custody pending the VDD’s further inquiry.

As reported, the VDD stated that Russian intelligence intensified the campaign to recruit spies via the Telegram messenger.

Georgia’s President Salome Zourabichvili has vetoed a controversial “foreign agents” bill that sparked weeks of widespread protests across the country.

In previous cases, the Public Prosecutor's Office (OM) could only initiate legal proceedings for leaking business secrets if the company filed a complaint. Now, the OM can decide itself to initiate a process if the espionage activity is carried out for another country.

Increased penalties for espionage
One change from previous legislation is the severity of the penalties. Individuals who carry out espionage activities for a foreign government can receive a maximum sentence of eight years in prison. In exceptional situations, the maximum sentence will be 12 years. Due to the rise of digital espionage, cybercrimes may also be punished more severely if they are committed for a foreign government and harm national security.

Diaspora espionage
An important component of the expansion of the law is the fight against diaspora espionage. In these cases, foreign powers try to influence communities of foreign origin in the Netherlands. They collect, for example, personal data and try to influence citizens in their own interest. Foreign governments do not hesitate to mobilize community members to censor opponents and critics within those communities or pressure them into collaboration. The new law criminalizes these activities, thus increasing resistance against state threats.

Guarantee of an open society
Our open society remains guaranteed: contact with foreign entities or organizations remains possible. According to the law, it will only be considered a crime if someone carries out espionage activities for foreign governments that seriously harm Dutch interests and if the person is aware that he can endanger those interests, she intends to do so or accepts it. The entry into force of the law depends on the treatment by the Senate.

This legislation represents an important step in protecting the Netherlands against modern espionage threats, ensuring that national security and vital interests are better protected in an increasingly digital and complex world.
