Curious about the process behind translating such a huge project, I asked Xseed and was put in touch with Jessica Chavez, the publisher's senior editor. In this interview, the charming Chavez shares the horror and struggle of such an overwhelming project, reveals the staggering total number of hours she spent working on it, and breaks down at the prospect of translating the sequel.

Approximately how long is the script for Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky? How many words?
I’ve spent the last month trying to forget this bit of info…

Well, according to some erratically scrawled notes carved into my desk, Trails in the Sky clocked in at somewhere around 1.5 million characters (“characters” being Japanese kanji). That’s roughly equivalent to 3 hefty RPGs or a 600-800 page novel in English.

How long did this project take from start to finish? About how many hours do you estimate that you worked on Trails?
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is by far the longest we’ve ever spent localizing a game. From start to finish it straddled three separate years from November 2009 to February 2011 and was a real marathon run for everyone involved. But while translation started in November 2009, my role as editor didn’t really begin in earnest until March 2010, because I was still preoccupied with Lunar: Silver Star Harmony at that point. After Lunar was in the clear, I was able to focus my horrified attention on Trails for the next three months. During that initial period I slogged through system text and the prologue and realized belatedly just how impossible it would be to meet the deadline at the current pace. So, from June to December of 2010, I deprived the L.A. Transit Authority of my company and worked from home to squeeze out some extra hours.

Since forming a publishing agreement with Falcom, Xseed had a stream of PSP games from the Japanese publisher including Ys Seven and The Legend of the Heroes: Trails in the Sky. "They have been a very good partner of ours," praised Ken Berry, Director of Publishing at Xseed, during an interview with Siliconera.

The partnership also changed how Falcom’s titles were handled outside of Japan. Xseed licensed a fan-translation to expedite the release of Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Falcom handled the localization programming in-house.

"You know, they’ve actually gone in and localized everything themselves, which is new for them," Berry explained. Before working with Xseed, Falcom titles were brought over by companies like Konami and Atlus which released a DS port actually developed by Interchannel in Japan. "All of their other projects that hit the US before, they’ve always left the programming or the porting to another company and quality did suffer a lot of times. We let them see a new model where they are localizing it to put out the best product possible."

"At the same time there is a tradeoff is that if they are too busy working on other products, like they are right now, the flow of games sort of slows. They’re a small company and they are working on so many new products right now they don’t have time to assign a programmer on localization for us. That’s slowed up a little bit, but we think as soon as they finish up with some of their products they are working on now, hopefully we can get back to localizing some of their titles." Falcom is currently working on The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Blue for PSP and a PlayStation Vita launch title they’re being awfully quiet about.

Xseed can handle six to eight decent size titles per year. I asked Berry how many games Trails in the Sky counts as. He laughed for a second before saying, "Yeah, that would take up about half of that capacity, to be honest with you."

Dan is het ook gewoon al 2,5 maand geleden dat ik die PSP gekocht heb

That means these games, unlike their NeoGeo Station lineup, are PlayStation 3 and PSP compatible. Prices for SNK’s minis have not been announced.

The King of Fighters ’95 and Baseball Stars 2 are also coming to North America this week with save state support and online play. These should be just like the NeoGeo Station versions on Japan’s PlayStation Store now, but likely with a different price.

I am very pleased to confirm that US and Japanese PSone emulations are being prepared for release on the SCEE PlayStation Stores.

While I cannot yet confirm dates or any of the titles in process at this time, there are a few that are already in process and you will start to see them publishing in the future.

What does this mean for you, the consumers?
Here are the key points:

• Publishers who own the rights to release PSone titles that were previously only available in the US and/or Japan will now be able to apply to have them released on the SCEE PlayStation Stores (providing they are rated by the appropriate ratings boards for each territory).
• All titles will be published ‘as is’, with either English or Japanese language game content where available.
• All titles will run at 60 Hz and you will need a 60 Hz capable display to play them properly.

This also means that if a PAL version of a title has been unable to pass QA in SCEE, but the NTSC version is already available on the PlayStation Store in SCEA or SCEJ, we can look at publishing that version instead. We cannot simply take the US version and publish it immediately, as it has to be reprocessed for SCEE, but at least we know the title should already be relatively bug-free.

Please note: This does not mean we can publish titles that have not legally cleared for release in SCEE territories as a result of expired licenses, etc.

With this news in mind, we’d love to hear from you what titles you’d like to see available in Europe for the first time – make yourself heard in the comments and with the most requested titles we will speak to publishers on your behalf.
