Ik ben eigenlijk helemaal niet zo van de live optredens; ik heb nogmaar drie keer een band live op zien treden en mijn slechte rug helpt daar ook niet echt bij (langer dan tien minuten rechtop staan voelt niet zo fijn aan) maar als David Bowie hier ooit nog een keer komt zou ik als het niet anders kan zelfs een moord plegen om aan kaartjes te komen.

A brief update on long-absent David Bowie was buried at the bottom of a long New York Times profile on the rocker's supermodel wife Iman this weekend. "I'm not thinking of touring," he said. "I'm comfortable." The news is hardly a shock - Bowie has been on an unannounced hiatus for the last six years - but his quote to the Times confirms there will be no new Bowie shows in the near future. What's he been doing with his time? "He draws, paints and collects 20th-century British art," the Times piece says.
Earlier this decade, Bowie released two strong back-to-back albums (2002's Heathen and 2003's Reality) and went on a world tour that many fans considered to be his best in decades. It was cut short, however, when he suffered a heart attack in the summer of 2004. Over the next two years he made surprise appearances onstage with Arcade Fire, Alicia Keys and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. In 2006, Bowie announced he was going to stage a full concert at the inaugural High Line Festival in New York, but a few months later he backed out. "Due to ongoing work on a new project, David Bowie has announced that it will not be possible for him to perform," a statement read. Four years later, there’s been no sign of that "new project."
Prior to this break, Bowie hadn't taken more than two-and-a-half years off between albums since he began recording in 1964. It's now been nearly seven years since he released a single new track. On her Twitter in May 2009, Iman did suggest he's working on something when asked by a follower if Bowie was recording new music. "He’s cooking up something I'm sure you will love" was her response. A May article published by the AARP noted that Bowie was also working on a new album, but a rep for Bowie denied it to Rolling Stone.

The Man Who Sold the World. Superalbum. Ik luister vooral heel vaak de eerste 3 tracks en The Supermen. Supermen vind ik in die versie éen van de beste nummers ooit. Die hele vervormde stemmenbrei en die fenomenale progressie. Idem voor Width of a Circle van live in Santa Monica.

Ik wil alleen dat David Bowie een cd op gaat nemen als die beter gaat worden dan Reality. Anders hoef het van mij niet zo. En zijn laatste nummer van dat album is wel een toepasselijk einde. Maar ik gok dat over een vijf jaar hij nog wel met iets alleraardigst op de proppen komt. Er zit nog zat materiaal in de kluizen.

The irony is that David Bowie’s first #1 hit “Fame”, from the “Young Americans” album, was co-written with Lennon who also played guitar on the track. And it was indeed their fame as rock stars which drew Mark David Chapman to stalk them, and subsequently, to murder Lennon.

Ben zelf juist nooit overtuigd geraakt dat Lennon zingt op de plaat, en zeker wat betreft de genoemde gedeeltes. Ik denk dat hij helemaal niet meezingt. David Bowie's unreleased album Toy leaks online
Toy, the 2002 album never released by Virgin and now leaked online, has given Bowie fans first new music in almost a decade.
A decade after it was shelved by his label, David Bowie's 23rd studio album has been leaked on the internet. Toy, conceived as a reimagining of Bowie's early work, appeared on file-sharing websites this week, with Bowie's reps refusing to comment.
Toy was originally scheduled to be released in 2002. Together with long-time producer Tony Visconti and Bowie's touring band from 1999's Hours ..., the singer had laid down sessions at New York's Sear Sound studios, recording new versions of some of his earliest works. These included 1968's In The Heat of the Morning – with the strings taken out – and 1971 demo Shadow Man – with strings put in. Bowie also recorded a new version of his very first single, 1964's Liza Jane, first released under the name Davie Jones and the King Bees.
But Virgin Records did not release Toy. There were reports of rights issues, royalty disputes, and shortly thereafter Bowie set up his own label, ISO, licensed through Columbia. Five of Toy's tracks have since seen release, appearing on 2002's Heathen and as B-sides, although the bulk of Toy remained a mystery.
On Sunday, that changed. A week after an Australian man sold a purported copy of Toy on eBay (it sold for £62.98), a CD-quality MP3 version of the album suddenly appeared on BitTorrent, spreading like (ziggy) stardust. This release is missing two tracks from Toy's alleged track-list, Can't Help Thinking About Me and Karma Man, but includes two that were rumoured to have been cut.
Toy's unveiling will be of considerable interest to music-starved Bowie fans, who haven't had a new album since 2003. Outside of a handful of cameos – including work with Arcade Fire, Scarlett Johansson and David Gilmour – the Thin White Duke has been on an apparent musical hiatus since heart surgery in 2004.

The production of 'Uncle Floyd' is less rich than 'Slip Away', for which David also re-recorded his vocal. There are minor lyrical differences (e.g. 'Once a time they nearly might have been Bones and Oogie on a moving screen'). The first 'Don't forget to keep your head warm' chorus in 'Slip Away' also is absent in Toy's 'Uncle Floyd'. All in all, 'Uncle Floyd' does not sound as mature and majestic as 'Slip Away', but it is by no means less melancholic.
Afraid (3'28"): another new song recorded for Toy which later appeared on Heathen. The original Toy version of this song has a slightly different instrumentation and additional backing vocals. However, David's original vocal has been maintained on the Heathen version. Essentially, the Heathen version is a remix, not a re-recording. The lyrics are not among Bowie's most interesting: 'There's a hole in my ground/But there's no one around/With my shoes on the street/And I'm quick on my feet/And I'm running to you/Just a-looking above me'.

Also Bowie announces Earl Slick's guitar part at 3'49". There are also minor differences in instrumentation, e.g. the the kickdrum announcing the lengthy instrumental coda at 3'38" into the released version is absent in the Toy version.
Silly Boy Blue (5'33"): It is a first-rate, stately re-recording which resembles the version recorded in 1968 for the BBC (available on Bowie At The Beeb), including the "Chimi Chimi Chimi" part. The string arrangement is particularly beautiful. The long coda suggests this song might have closed the album.

In July 2002, a 1'26" excerpt of this Toy version was issued as a "secret B-side" on a section of BowieNet dedicated to the Heathen album. In August, another 1'30" excerpt appeared. However, both these teasers still did not cover the entire song.

Toy, the 2002 album never released by Virgin and now leaked online, has given Bowie fans first new music in almost a decade.
A decade after it was shelved by his label, David Bowie's 23rd studio album has been leaked on the internet. Toy, conceived as a reimagining of Bowie's early work, appeared on file-sharing websites this week, with Bowie's reps refusing to comment.
Toy was originally scheduled to be released in 2002. Together with long-time producer Tony Visconti and Bowie's touring band from 1999's Hours ..., the singer had laid down sessions at New York's Sear Sound studios, recording new versions of some of his earliest works. These included 1968's In The Heat of the Morning – with the strings taken out – and 1971 demo Shadow Man – with strings put in. Bowie also recorded a new version of his very first single, 1964's Liza Jane, first released under the name Davie Jones and the King Bees.
But Virgin Records did not release Toy. There were reports of rights issues, royalty disputes, and shortly thereafter Bowie set up his own label, ISO, licensed through Columbia. Five of Toy's tracks have since seen release, appearing on 2002's Heathen and as B-sides, although the bulk of Toy remained a mystery.
On Sunday, that changed. A week after an Australian man sold a purported copy of Toy on eBay (it sold for £62.98), a CD-quality MP3 version of the album suddenly appeared on BitTorrent, spreading like (ziggy) stardust. This release is missing two tracks from Toy's alleged track-list, Can't Help Thinking About Me and Karma Man, but includes two that were rumoured to have been cut.
Toy's unveiling will be of considerable interest to music-starved Bowie fans, who haven't had a new album since 2003. Outside of a handful of cameos – including work with Arcade Fire, Scarlett Johansson and David Gilmour – the Thin White Duke has been on an apparent musical hiatus since heart surgery in 2004.

Zal mij niks verbazen als Bowie het album zelf gelekt heeft..... Ik had de volledige versie via via al een tijdje voordat ie op de torrent site terecht kwam. De gast die hem op de torrent site gelekt heeft is dezelfde eikel die heel wat bootleg opnames van een vriend van mij gelekt heeft.

Het zou een 'wonder' zijn als David Bowie nog nieuwe muziek zou uitbrengen. Het is waarschijnlijker dat de popmuzikant zijn microfoon definitief aan de wilgen heeft gehangen. Dat zegt Paul Trynka, de biograaf van Bowie, in een interview met muzieksite Spinner.
'Ik denk dat hij alleen terugkomt als hij iets wereldschokkends kan produceren,' aldus Trynka in het interview. Het laatste album van Bowie verscheen in 2003, en de afgelopen vijf jaar heeft hij geen concerten meer gegeven.
Toch geeft Trynka de hoop niet helemaal op. 'Mijn hart zegt dat hij terugkomt, mijn hoofd zegt dat dat zeer onwaarschijnlijk is. Maar wonderen gebeuren soms.'
Bowie moest zijn laatste tour in de zomer van 2004 plotseling afbreken omdat hij een hartaanval kreeg. In 2009 liet hij weten dat hij geen plannen had om weer live-optredens te gaan geven.
Trynka schreef de biografie David Bowie: Starman, genoemd naar een nummer van het album Ziggy Stardust. Het boek ligt nu in de winkels. Eerder was Trynka hoofdredacteur van het gezaghebbende Britse muziektijdschrift Mojo.

En hij is altijd met zijn muziek voor de meute geweest, dus misschien zou hij nog wel dingen willen maar is hij daar simpelweg te oud voor.
Ik heb ook liever niet dat hij nog een album uitbrengt als dat het niveau ten slechte komt. Het allerlaatste nummer op het allerlaatste album 'bring back the disco king' vond ik destijds al heel erg symbolisch.

Volgens de bron zingt de populaire fadozangeres een duet met Bowie tijdens de openingsceremonie van het sportevenement. Er zijn nog geen officiële partijen die de samenwerking bevestigen. Ik vind Station to Station behoorlijk op zichzelf staan, jammer genoeg. Wat een verschrikkelijke bazenplaat
Bleuh.
Dat idee had ik al wel ja. Maar wel een enorme bazenplaat ja. Vroeger was Ziggy Stardust echt mijn favoriet maar dan ben ik echt helemaal van afgestapt. Hunky Dory en Station to Station zijn het nuquote:

Ik vind het zelf de opmaat naar nummers als Golden Years, Word on a Wing en Stay. Station to Station en TVC15 hebben meer gemeen met de A-kanten van opvolgers Low en "Heroes".

Ik heb Stage, een dubbel LP en Ziggy live at Santa Monica '73. Stage vind ik niet zo heel veel aan, maar ik moet ook zeggen dat Bowie voor mij vooral draait om Ziggy Stardust en Aladdin Sane. Ook vind ik het strakke en cleane van studio-albums Bowie heel goed staan. Maar in Santa Monica zit wel een mooie sfeer, en het is wel een fijne verzameling van zijn liedjes uit de eerste periode. En er staat één nummer op, dat is zo ingetogen en zo fantastisch gezongen dat het publiek eerst even op adem moet komen voordat ze beginnen te applaudiseren.quote:

Geweldig dat Bowie zich met nieuw materiaal meldt. Hij heeft niks meer te bewijzen en ook zijn bankrekening is geen motief. Dit is gewoon passie voor muziek; iemand die nog steeds iets te melden heeft en zich wil uiten. Ik vind het nieuwe nummer erg geslaagd.

Lelijkheid, ja ik zou mij er niet meer druk om maken als je een 25e studioplaat uit kan brengen. De meeste studioalbums van hem hebben een vaste kwaliteit en er zijn maar weinig artiesten met meer dan 10 die hetzelfde kunnen zeggen.

A killer rhythm guitarist and long-time David Bowie collaborator, the 60-year-old played on John Lennon’s ‘Double Fantasy,’ has recorded with Ian Hunter and played in the post-Stray Cats group Phantom, Rocker & Slick.
In recent years, the Staten Island native toured with the New York Dolls (including the summer 2011 tour with Motley Crue) and started designing a line of hand-painted guitar straps called Slick Straps. He also regularly visits School Of Rock outposts all over the U.S., jamming and speaking with the students.
Slick is already having quite a busy 2013: He has plans to make a record with Austin guitarist Rosie Flores, and he’s in the works of setting up some of his own tour dates sometime before the end of the year—“depending on what happens with the other guy that just put a record out [Tuesday] for the first time in 10 years,” he laughs dryly.
That “other guy,” of course, is Bowie, who released a new single, ‘Where Are We Now?’ and announced a new album, ‘The Next Day,’ on his birthday, Jan. 8. Slick has played with Bowie off and on for better part of the last 40 years, both on tour (including Bowie’s last round of concerts, in the early ’00s) and on classic albums such as ‘Young Americans’ and ‘Station To Station.’ During a 45-minute interview, Slick was clearly happy to finally be talking about the new Bowie album — for which he recorded parts in summer 2012.
“I’ve had a gag on since last May,” he says. “David got in touch with me out of the blue, and he said, ‘I’m ready to go back in. What are you doing? Are you around? Are you touring?’ I said, ‘No, just get me some dates.’ We started banging dates around — and he was already recording — and I went in and did all my stuff in July. But do you have any idea how many interviews I’ve done since May, with this under my belt, which I couldn’t say anything about? It was horrible!” Slick laughs.
‘The Next Day’ also features contributions from an impressive lineup of musicians in addition to Slick, including familiar Bowie collaborators such as drummers Sterling Campbell and Zachary Alford, guitarists Gerry Leonard and David Torn, and bassist Gail Ann Dorsey. Tony Visconti, who also produced ‘The Next Day,’ contributes bass, as does Tony Levin, who’s known for his work with Peter Gabriel.
Slick gave UCR some insights into ‘The Next Day,’ talking about his contributions and how the rest of the album shaped up.
Were you surprised when Bowie called you to do some recording?
Nothing he ever does surprises me. It doesn’t surprise me when he shows up; it doesn’t surprise me when he disappears. It’s just DB.
I was really impressed by the secrecy. That’s almost unheard of, for no news to leak about something like this.
Oh, I know. And especially because I had the cover for the Christmas issue of ‘Guitar Player’ magazine. That was the hardest one — it’s a double issue and it stays on the stands longer, and they did a 14-page spread on me, and I’m thinking, “Christ, and I can’t even say anything.” Anyway, he appreciated that — and I got a nice thank you for keeping my big mouth shut.
Was the secrecy built in from the start?
Oh yeah, right from the beginning. Because he didn’t know when it was going to be done.
You did all your parts last summer. How much of the record was done when you came in?
It was weird; I’m not really sure, because he had been cutting tracks. And then I went in and I cut three from scratch with me and David and Sterling Campbell on drums, and Tony Visconti playing bass. And then he had other tracks that were already done, that were missing some guitars he needed from me, and I did those.
Do you even know what the entire album sounds like? Have you heard the entire record?
Yes, I have. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s really, really, really good. And it’s a bit eclectic, so it’s not all like what you heard.
Tony Visconti did an interview with the BBC earlier this week, and he said that the single is very different in tone from the rest of the record.
It is. Okay, so he’s let the cat out of the bag a little bit, then — good. It’s rocking. There’s a lot of rockers on there, I can tell you that.
That’s what he said: “It’s quite a rock album, the rest of the songs.”
Yeah, it is. I mean, there’s a few kind of really cool mid-tempo ones in there as well, but I’m the go-to guy for the rock stuff with David. And that’s why I’m always there.
What was your methodology when you were adding your music? How did you motivate the performance you wanted to get? How much direction did you get?
You know, we’ve been doing this since day one, and what we’ll do is, we’ll sit down and we’ll listen to the stuff. And he’ll ask me how it hits me — how does this hit you, how does that hit you? Or he’ll go, “This one you gotta be on.” And we’ll sit down, we’ll listen to the song — well, we’ll sit in the control room with a couple of acoustic guitars and then we just bang ideas around. I’ll go, “What do you think about this?” He goes, “What do you think about that?” It’s not like taking direction as a session player would take direction, because that’s why I don’t do sessions—cause I can’t take direction. [Laughs.]
What he’s done since day one — and still continues to do — is, he knows exactly what it is that I bring to the table, and that’s what he wants. He doesn’t want me to sound like anybody but me. So we just sit there and we just hash through ideas until something hits one of us, and then we record it. It’s real casual — you know, you throw a couple cups of coffee on the table and you pick up a few guitars and we listen through some tracks. And he already knows pretty much what he wants me on, but then I’ll say, “Well, let me play you these and see if these hit you. If they do, let’s work out some parts.” It’s really casual. And that’s why it gets done quickly and efficiently, because it’s all done organically.
The music I really like tends to be the more spontaneous music — not very meticulous. There’s a time and a place for that, but it can sound so airless and stuffy.
It’s really funny, as sophisticated as some of his records sound, he’s not anal about this stuff. And neither am I, and that’s why we get along so well. I’ll do a take that’s really not perfect, but it is perfect, because it feels great. Therein lies the perfection: It lies in what it feels like and what it does to you emotionally, not the exact notes. I can play a note that’s a little bit on the outside — like, “What the hell was that?” — and then we listen back to it and we go, “Wow, that felt really good.” And we just leave it alone. Whereas some guys will sit there and they’ll try to fix a weird note. Those weird notes, to me, is what really makes it happen. Of course—listen to the Stones. Keith Richards is my hero. In my mind, he’s the best guitar player ever. And Keith’s stuff has definitely got some urgency to it, and it’s definitely not perfect. But boy, when it comes to feel, it doesn’t get any more perfect than Keith.
I think the term is “loose.”
It is — it’s loose, and it’s emotional. That’s what it is. And that’s, to me, what rock and roll is supposed to be about. If you want perfection, go see a symphony orchestra.
How was the studio atmosphere? People might be surprised to hear that it might be relaxed.
That’s what it is. It’s just a really relaxed, casual, hanging out… I wouldn’t liken it any different than if we were just sitting in my living room, only there happened to be a recording machine in here. That’s what it feels like.
When you were collaborating, did you get any inkling as to why now finally it was time for Bowie to put out a new record?
You know, I don’t even bother asking. Obviously, it was time.
There are some things you don’t question.
No, you know, you really don’t. I don’t question much of anything like that; it’s not in my nature. I don’t need to know why — I just need to be there, that’s all. [Laughs.]
When you guys were bouncing ideas off of each other, were there any specific influences you wanted to bring? Or any that stood out to you that ended up happening?
Well, I can tell you that there’s a couple of the rock songs…cause, you know, admittedly — and it’s not any big mystery — my rhythm guitar playing is very likened to Keith [Richards]. Because he’s the guy I’ve been listening to — and still do every single day — since I’ve been 12 years old. You’ll be getting some of that on some of the rock tracks from me. He would say, “Do that you-know-what.” [Laughs.] You know somebody that long, and if he says “you-know-what,” you completely get it. [Laughs.] And you know what, not only is it awesome—it’s priceless.
When you’re playing with someone for so long…
Almost 40 years!
How did this experience compare to some of the other times you guys have recorded in the past? Was there anything that stood out to you?
The only thing was is that this one had a lot more secrecy going on. [Laughs.] I mean, one day I went out to have a cigarette in front of the studio, and something felt weird. Cause I would hang out in the doorway, in a little alcove; I didn’t even walk into the street. And something felt weird, and I peered across the street, and there was a guy there with a camera on a tripod. So I put my cigarette out and went back inside. [Laughs.] Cause if they see me, they can put two and two together.
That’s kind of fun to think you’re making a record and nobody knows about it. It’s like you’re on a spy mission or something.
It was fun for a little while, but then when I started doing interviews — and after I got all excited after I finished doing the tracks and I was bursting — it wasn’t fun anymore.
Are there any thematic things that really stand out to you on the album? Everyone has said the lead single is very introspective and inward-looking and looking backward…
It’s not all like that. Some of them, the lyrics are as straight ahead as David can write a lyric — cause he’s not known for writing straight-ahead lyrics. He hadn’t finished the lyrics when we were in there, either. The way he writes is, we’ll get a basic thing down, and he’ll have a basic melody going on, but it’s done so much organically and off-the-cuff, that he will go back later and finish the lyrics. You get an inkling when you’re in there, but you’re not quite sure what it’s going to be until later. There’s a bit of mystery that we even have, because I left the studio thinking…I mean, I played on it, and I’m going, “Boy, I’m curious to hear what this is going to sound like!” [Laughs.]
Is Bowie going to be touring? I think that’s what everyone wants to know.
We don’t know. Obviously, we want him to. But right now, that’s a big if. Like I said before, sometimes he shows up and sometimes he doesn’t. I could get a phone call tomorrow saying, “Hey, you know what? Here’s the setlist.” I don’t know. I can’t speak for him or the organization. Obviously, the band would love to go out. Even if it’s not a huge tour, we would like to go out and do some gigs. But that’s yet to be seen.

David Bowie's producer Tony Visconti has said that he hopes Bowie's upcoming album The Next Day will start a 'copycat trend' of good music.
Visconti has had a lengthy involvement with Bowie, and The Next Day will be the twelfth of Bowie's albums that Visconti has produced. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Visconti has said that he thinks modern music is too computerized, and that more bands should try and emulate the 70s.
He told the Reporter, "[Today's music] all sounds like it was made by the same person. It's very computerized. There's a style and a sound in all these modern records where they're interchangeable. It could be the same production crew, it could be the same singer, everybody is auto-tuned to death and the songs are very flimsy, it all relies on beats rather than quality lyrics.
"These days, if a kid gets a new laptop and there's Garage Band on it, within five minutes they sound like somebody on the radio. This can't be good. It's either the radio is bland or people have lower expectations."
While Visconti said he does enjoy Florence + the Machine, saying that they're closer to the 'ethics' of 70s recordings, he was pleased to hear that The Next Day is outselling Rihanna.
He continued, "But I've heard that we're outselling Rihanna and that is wonderful. Not that I have anything against Rihanna, I love her dearly, but it's like there's something real now, and if this starts a copy cat trend, people might be making good records from now on. Maybe David has started this new trend.
"But honestly, it's because it's so refreshing. You can tell it's a studio-made record, it's not done on a computer. It's really beautiful and organic and it sounds good on the radio too."

Visconti also reassured fans of Bowie's health, dispelling the rumours that Bowie could be suffering from heart problems.
"He had surgery in 2004 and he's been healthy ever since," Visconti said. " Because he hasn't come out and said anything, people suspect the worst. And it was frustrating. I would have lunch with him and Id tell people that he looks fantastic and he sounds great and all that. And people would not believe me.
"Someone recently said to me, 'Well, why didn't he make a statement?' And I mean, that's silly - can you imagine David Bowie getting on television and saying, I'd like to tell everyone that I'm healthy? So what could he do? Nothing. This album is physical evidence that he's fine."

BBC Radio 1s Official Chart show has just announced David Bowie's return to the Top Ten in the UK with the placing of his new single, 'Where Are We Now?', at Number 6.
It's Bowie's highest charting hit since 'Absolute Beginners' reached Number 2 in 1986. It's also his first Top Ten hit since 'Jump They Say' reached Number 9 in 1993.
This is an impressive result for Bowie, particularly when one takes into account the figures are based on just five days' sales (it's a full week normally), and that the track was available in the digital format only.
The surprise release of 'Where Are We Now? on Tuesday sparked a media frenzy which saw the single get off to a flying start and the song remains on both the BBC's A playlists for 6 Music and Radio 2.
Though 'Where Are We Now?' is included as an instant download with pre-orders of The Next Day, understandably those particular sales are not included towards the Official Singles Chart.

After a silent decade David Bowie is back. Tim Teeman talks to the singer’s producer, friend and representative on Earth. Scroll to the bottom for a track-by-track guide to Bowie’s new album
Tony Visconti has known David Bowie since 1967 and produced 12 of his most memorable albums, beginning with The Man Who Sold the World (1970). He has done “mountains of cocaine” with his longtime friend, “though alcohol was far worse”. Both are now sober veterans of Alcoholics Anonymous, living in New York with a shared passion for Japanese food — Bowie is “very much a sushi guy”. But when Bowie called Visconti two years ago to “work on some demos”, the 68-year-old producer admits that he was shocked.
“I had no idea he was writing again. We had spoken in 2009 and he had made it clear he wasn’t writing. And now this week, the single came out and it shocked the world,” he says.
The song, Where Are We Now?, a melancholic lament for Berlin where Bowie and Visconti lived in the 1970s, caused a global Bowie-gasm on Tuesday, Bowie’s 66th birthday, released with no advance hype at 5am GMT. It received its premiere on Radio 4’s Today programme. An album, Bowie’s first for ten years, The Next Day, will be released on March 11.
On the eve of the single’s release, “I couldn’t sleep,” Visconti reveals, drinking water in a smart New York private members’ club. He is dressed all in black, slim — he traded in drugs and booze for t’ai chi — with cropped white hair. “I’d kept a secret for two years, I knew the release date for two months, it was a countdown, 47 days to go . . . the final day we were e-mailing each other. I’d say, ‘I’m biting all my nails down, it’s 2 hours and 35 minutes,’ and he [Bowie] would write back, ‘2 hours and 26 minutes.’ Then I saw some posts on Bowie Worldwide just after midnight: ‘Holy shit’, ‘Oh my God . . .’ Everyone had written him off. The next day he was very happy about how well it had been received. ‘Well, what did you expect?’ I said.”
Bowie, he says, told him he would “never do another interview again” making Visconti, I say, his voice on Earth. “Tell me about it,” he says, wryly. The singer had a heart attack in 2004 and there have been rumours that he was suffering from cancer. “They’re categorically not true,” Visconti says. “He does not have cancer. If there’s one thing I would like to dispel it’s the rumours about his ill-health. He’s incredibly fit and takes care of himself. Obviously after the heart attack he wasn’t too thrilled but he has an amazing family and friends. Visconti calls family “the F-word” with good reason. He became estranged from Bowie in 1988 having talked about Bowie’s close relatives to the press in a way the singer felt was “too intrusive”. They reconciled “because we’re friends”.
Since his heart attack, Bowie has been painting — an exhibition of new work is possible, Visconti says — “and doing a phenomenal amount of reading: old English history, Russian history, the monarchs of Great Britain — what made them bad and good. Everything he reads makes it into the lyrics of his songs”, which is evident in our exclusive breakdown of the rest of the songs on the album about tyrants, spies and soldiers.
“I’ve worked with other rock stars who want to talk about their yachts and horses. Not David,” says the producer, fondly. Love in the internet age, glam rock and the workings of fame form more personal thematic ballast.
Certain to create the most headlines is Valentine’s Day, Bowie’s response to the epidemic of gun violence in American schools. It was written a year before the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in December. “It’s about mental health rather than gun control. It’s all young people doing these shootings. It goes inside the head of the shooter. David gives him the name Johnny, which I think is the name he’s given to about 12 people in his songs over the past 40 years.”
Why Johnny? “I don’t know. Maybe it rhymes well: a generic name which helps describe the common man. The issue for him isn’t so much guns but the mental health of the shooter. In the past two years there have been so many shootings and the next day we’d come into the studio and say ‘What the f***? Why is this happening?’ We were shocked like everyone else and don’t think it’s going to end anytime soon. We have kids and we can’t imagine the horror . . . the worst thing to happen to our kids would be them being shot in public.”
The Berlin period featured in the new single, when Bowie lived with Iggy Pop, wasn’t as depraved as people think. “We got drunk a lot. But he lived a very spartan life. Iggy had his bedroom, David had his.”
Did their relationship go beyond friendship? “No, absolutely not and at that time he had serious financial problems. He was breaking up with [first wife] Angie and he was reconstructing his life. Certainly there were periods when he reached the depths.
“During the making of Young Americans [1975] he was taking so much cocaine it would have killed a horse. Cocaine certainly almost killed me. During the making of that album I nearly died. I thought I was going to have a heart attack. I worked day and night. He’d come in to the studio at 11pm and work till 11am. One day I said, ‘I have to pack it in, the cocaine isn’t propping me up any more. I cannot stay awake. On the way home my heart felt like it was going to explode. I didn’t want to cause a scandal for him and me by going to hospital, so I took 12 sleeping pills — no suicidal intent, just to slow my heart and it did and I survived. We’d have both been dead if we’d carried on. There was a myth it wasn’t habit-forming back then. Foolishly we believed that. It was a social drug and socially acceptable. You went to any cocktail party and somebody put a line or spoon under your nose and you said ‘Oh, thank you.’ I know people who sold their homes to feed their habit. For us there was no limit.”
Visconti stopped taking cocaine in 1984. “I woke up one day imagining there were phantoms in the room. I just went cold turkey.” He stopped drinking in 2000 and Bowie and he both went to AA. “David found it very useful. We talk about being each other’s support system. If two people from the programme sit together that’s technically an AA meeting. Every two or three days we talk about it, although we don’t start and end with a prayer. I’ll say, ‘I’m coming to my 12th birthday’ and he says, ‘Well it’s been my 23rd.’ I ask, ‘Do you miss it?’ and he says, ‘I don’t miss it at all,’ and I say, ‘Me neither.’”
Sometimes the men recollect how drunk they were at a party, the limo that would wait for them outside after-hours clubs in New York. Their most outrageous night? “We stayed up with John Lennon until 10.30am. We did a mountain of cocaine, it looked like the Matterhorn, obscenely big, and four open bottles of cognac.” Visconti pauses. “He doesn’t do anything now. He’s Mr Clean. He looks great, rosy-cheeked. If you’re doing drugs and drinking at 66 you look like shit.”
Bowie’s poison now? A strong macchiato. Otherwise he drinks water in the studio, and eats roast beef sandwiches and salads.
The two have created 29 songs together of late, making a second album almost inevitable. “We’re not going to give up on the songs that haven’t made this one,” Visconti says.
“We’re going to go back and look at them because they’re spectacular musical pieces, they just haven’t been finished lyrically. I think he’s on a roll, and will possibly return to the studio later this year. If people don’t like this album then maybe he won’t, but it doesn’t matter to him. He told me what he wants to do is make records. He does not want to tour. He’s been doing it for more than 30 years and he’s tired of it. I’ve been with him on tour and, no matter how cosseted they are, they lose sleep, they get miserable and lonely. After being on stage they just want to get into the limo and crash. It’s gruelling and the star of the show has to deliver most on stage.”
Visconti recalls seeing him after a concert at Jones Beach outside New York in 2003. “He just sat there and said, ‘I’m knackered.’ He wasn’t enjoying it.”
It has been rumoured this week that Bowie might appear at the Glastonbury and SXSW festivals. “There is no possibility whatsoever,” Visconti says. “I don’t want to give people any hope. He’s pretty adamant that he’s found his muse. ‘I just want to make records,’ he told me.”
After the heart attack, Bowie resumed contact by sending Visconti “jokes and YouTube videos of people doing stupid things. I don’t think artists ever retire, why would he retire? Some artists have long periods of not creating: they need to accumulate experiences and have something to write about. I’ve read Christopher Hitchens’s book Mortality and I’m sure David has too.”
Bowie walks among New Yorkers well disguised: “He doesn’t stand on street corners for any length of time.” He was papped outside the recording studio in SoHo, New York, in October, but it was a rare sighting. He travels all over the world, “but you wouldn’t know it because he doesn’t want you to. He values his privacy because he hasn’t had a private life.”
The album was made over an 18-month period, then in the studio intensively for three months, two weeks at a time. Bowie makes his own demos at home on a computer.
“He knows how to make a drum loop and record chords and do a backing vocal over them,” his friend says. Sometimes tracks are just music or “la-la-las”. “He gets us to feel a song might be about an assassination, so everyone gets in that mood. None of the songs are pre-written, he jots down notes and I keep the microphone settings the same for each song so we can return to it.” The new single has very sparse lyrics, he explains, but every line evokes a feeling and reminded him of how much Berlin felt like a film noir, “a Third Man city. There is such drama there: the killing, Hitler . . .”
Visconti met Bowie and the singer Marc Bolan at the same time. “I knew they’d both be big,” he says. It was Bolan who was the more rivalrous, and Bowie, who discovered glam rock — in Visconti’s estimation — “about an hour before Bolan. They’re like my sons, I can’t say who I love more, but Bolan saw everyone as a threat. A friend showed me a picture of him, disguised, watching David and I on stage supporting Hawkwind, the hairiest band ever. He’s wearing a cloth cap so we wouldn’t recognise him.”
As for Bowie’s sexuality (in the Seventies he said he was gay, then bi), “I never witnessed him with a boyfriend. I certainly think he wanted people to think that but his main squeezes were always women. There was such homophobia back then. He said the best tactic was to go the other way and shock people. He said Ziggy Stardust was a persona but it confused people. I hear people even now saying, ‘You work with that queer.’ It’s never been dropped completely.”
Bowie “doesn’t care” about criticism, Visconti says. “He’s a very smart guy. Part of his thinking releasing the single may have been, ‘Let people think what they want, I’m going to shock them with this.’ If so, it came off flawlessly.”
Like many music journalists, Bowie and Visconti joke about good songs Bowie has made since the widely hailed album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) as “the best since since Scary Monsters”. They also have another joke. “Every time we go into the studio, we say, ‘This one’s going to be our Sgt Pepper.’”
He reveals that Bowie loves British comedy: particularly Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore (he makes Visconti play Cook in sketch re-creations). DVDs of The Office played through the 2003 recording of the album Reality. Bowie is also addicted to the ITV drama Foyle’s War, the American police series The Shield and the French drama Spiral.
Visconti’s least favourite Bowie songs are from the Never Let Me Down period (“He lost his way”) but he likes Let’s Dance, even if he didn’t produce it. He says he likes to “mix things up” and has worked with Elaine Paige as well as Thin Lizzy. He produces younger bands today (including Razorlight and the Dandy Warhols) but is shocked by “how little musicianship they have compared to the 1970s, and I’m not being an old man — I was shocked by how little musicianship we had compared to Charlie Parker. Today they put 10,000 hours in on the computer, rather than shredding a guitar.”
Arctic Monkeys and Arcade Fire are honourable exceptions but he hates bands “channelling” the 1970s and 1980s. “It’s bollocks. Listen to the ballad we just released: it’s just a man singing from the heart with no trickery.”
Another single may precede the album’s release in March. Until then Visconti, three times married (once to the Welsh folk singer Mary Hopkin), with four children, and in a relationship for 12 years (“I’m more faithful as a single man, you have to work harder to keep up the romance”), will practise t’ai chi on his Manhattan roof and await more tantalising calls from the still-Thin White Duke. So, there’s more Bowie music to come and more surprises? “Oh yes,” Visconti says, grinning to the max.

Tony Visconti has known David Bowie since 1967 and produced 12 of his most memorable albums, beginning with The Man Who Sold the World (1970). He has done “mountains of cocaine” with his longtime friend, “though alcohol was far worse”. Both are now sober veterans of Alcoholics Anonymous, living in New York with a shared passion for Japanese food — Bowie is “very much a sushi guy”. But when Bowie called Visconti two years ago to “work on some demos”, the 68-year-old producer admits that he was shocked.
“I had no idea he was writing again. We had spoken in 2009 and he had made it clear he wasn’t writing. And now this week, the single came out and it shocked the world,” he says.
The song, Where Are We Now?, a melancholic lament for Berlin where Bowie and Visconti lived in the 1970s, caused a global Bowie-gasm on Tuesday, Bowie’s 66th birthday, released with no advance hype at 5am GMT. It received its premiere on Radio 4’s Today programme. An album, Bowie’s first for ten years, The Next Day, will be released on March 11.
On the eve of the single’s release, “I couldn’t sleep,” Visconti reveals, drinking water in a smart New York private members’ club. He is dressed all in black, slim — he traded in drugs and booze for t’ai chi — with cropped white hair. “I’d kept a secret for two years, I knew the release date for two months, it was a countdown, 47 days to go . . . the final day we were e-mailing each other. I’d say, ‘I’m biting all my nails down, it’s 2 hours and 35 minutes,’ and he [Bowie] would write back, ‘2 hours and 26 minutes.’ Then I saw some posts on Bowie Worldwide just after midnight: ‘Holy shit’, ‘Oh my God . . .’ Everyone had written him off. The next day he was very happy about how well it had been received. ‘Well, what did you expect?’ I said.”
Bowie, he says, told him he would “never do another interview again” making Visconti, I say, his voice on Earth. “Tell me about it,” he says, wryly. The singer had a heart attack in 2004 and there have been rumours that he was suffering from cancer. “They’re categorically not true,” Visconti says. “He does not have cancer. If there’s one thing I would like to dispel it’s the rumours about his ill-health. He’s incredibly fit and takes care of himself. Obviously after the heart attack he wasn’t too thrilled but he has an amazing family and friends. Visconti calls family “the F-word” with good reason. He became estranged from Bowie in 1988 having talked about Bowie’s close relatives to the press in a way the singer felt was “too intrusive”. They reconciled “because we’re friends”.
Since his heart attack, Bowie has been painting — an exhibition of new work is possible, Visconti says — “and doing a phenomenal amount of reading: old English history, Russian history, the monarchs of Great Britain — what made them bad and good. Everything he reads makes it into the lyrics of his songs”, which is evident in our exclusive breakdown of the rest of the songs on the album about tyrants, spies and soldiers.
“I’ve worked with other rock stars who want to talk about their yachts and horses. Not David,” says the producer, fondly. Love in the internet age, glam rock and the workings of fame form more personal thematic ballast.
Certain to create the most headlines is Valentine’s Day, Bowie’s response to the epidemic of gun violence in American schools. It was written a year before the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in December. “It’s about mental health rather than gun control. It’s all young people doing these shootings. It goes inside the head of the shooter. David gives him the name Johnny, which I think is the name he’s given to about 12 people in his songs over the past 40 years.”
Why Johnny? “I don’t know. Maybe it rhymes well: a generic name which helps describe the common man. The issue for him isn’t so much guns but the mental health of the shooter. In the past two years there have been so many shootings and the next day we’d come into the studio and say ‘What the f***? Why is this happening?’ We were shocked like everyone else and don’t think it’s going to end anytime soon. We have kids and we can’t imagine the horror . . . the worst thing to happen to our kids would be them being shot in public.”
The Berlin period featured in the new single, when Bowie lived with Iggy Pop, wasn’t as depraved as people think. “We got drunk a lot. But he lived a very spartan life. Iggy had his bedroom, David had his.”
Did their relationship go beyond friendship? “No, absolutely not and at that time he had serious financial problems. He was breaking up with [first wife] Angie and he was reconstructing his life. Certainly there were periods when he reached the depths.

Terwijl hij de Jaarbeurs in 1996 niet eens vol kreeg...toch is dat mijn mooiste concertervaring van Bowie van de 8 concerten waar ik naar toe ben geweest.
Ik zoek er nog steeds de opnamen van...heb het ergens op een cassettebandje (had je nog in die tijd), maar ik weet dat het ook digitaal te vinden moet zijn. Wanneer iemand hier de opnames heeft krijg ik daar graag een pm van....ik heb ruim voldoende ruilmateriaal
