Holland’s 30-year wait for a victory over Italy ended in glorious fashion in Berne as Marco van Basten’s side rampaged their way to a 3-0 defeat of the world champions.
A clearly offside goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy may have kickstarted the rout but there was no doubting that the Dutch, superior in every area, fully deserved a victory that was completed by Wesley Sneijder’s close-range strike and a late breakaway goal by the outstanding Gio van Bronckhorst.
Uncharacteristically shaky in defence, the Italians were given a painful reminder of the importance of their World Cup captain Fabio Cannavaro, who was ruled out of the tournament after suffering an ankle injury in training last week.
Marco Materazzi took Cannavaro’s place in the centre of defence but filling the former world player of the year’s boots was to prove beyond the Inter Milan veteran, who was substituted ten minutes into the second half.

The first clear indication of the extent to which the Italians would miss Cannavaro came after quarter of an hour, when van Nistelrooy got in behind Materazzi only to be let down by a heavy first touch as he attempted to go round Buffon.
Materazzi made partial amends by heading Sneijder’s free-kick from the left over his own bar. But there was no such let-off for the Italians when Rafael van der Vart swung in a similar delivery from the opposite flank minutes later.
Buffon could only the palm the ball away at his back post and when the ball was rolled back to Sneijder the midfielder unleashed a fierce low drive that van Nistelrooy turned into the net from four yards out.
As the striker was clearly offside, the ensuing protests may have been justified but their only result was a yellow card for Luca Toni.
Five minutes later the Italians found themselves in deeper trouble after a move that suggests Total Football is alive and well in the Netherlands. Having cleared Andrea Pirlo’s corner off his own line, van Bronckhurst immediately sprinted forward to take possession once more in the acres of space that had opened up down the left.
The Barcelona defender’s cross was knocked down by Kuyt from beyond the back post and Sneijder, having stolen a yard on Materazzi, lashed the bouncing ball in between Buffon’s left glove and the near post.
The world champions could offer little in response, their one real moment of menace before the break coming when Antonio di Natale’s volley bounced through the legs of Khalid Boulahrouz with the result that Edwin van der Sar needed two attempts to smother the ball.
Van Nistelrooy should have extended the Dutch lead a minute before the break after Sneijder’s superb pass once again put him in behind Materazzi.
From just inside the box, the striker pushed his shot towards the bottom corner only to see it ricocheted off Buffon’s leg and up over the bar.
Within ten minutes of the restart, Italian coach Roberto Donadoni had decided radical surgery was required for his malfunctioning back four.
Materazzi was hauled off, Fabio Grosso introduced at left-back with Gianluigi Zambrotta switching sides to allow rightback Christian Panucci to move into the centre.
Alessandro Del Piero was also thrown into the fray and the Juventus forward’s prodding helped the Italians finally display some of their true quality.
But after Toni had lifted their best chance of the night over the bar, van der Sar produced superb stops to keep out Grosso’s low drive and one of Pirlo’s trademark freekicks in quick succession.
Inevitably gaps were being left at the back and the Dutch took advantage with another counter-attack move of breathtaking fluency that finished with van Bronckhorst playing the overlapping Kuyt into space inside the box.
Buffon blocked the Liverpool striker’s shot but he was able to collect the loose ball and chip it into the area for van Bronckhorst to head home.
Poor starts are nothing new for Italy but, on this evidence, a World Cup and Euro double looks beyond Donadoni’s men.
As the officer took her away, she recalled that she asked,

There were immense displays from FC Twente’s Orlando Engelaar and Hamburg’s Nigel de Jong as the unpredictable Dutch turned the clock back to the golden days of Johan Cruyff and Johann Neeskens.
If anything, Engelaar — as big and powerful as Patrick Vieira in his prime — was the pick of this mouth-watering new Orange crop.
The Italians looked every day the oldest team in the tournament. They aged before our eyes as Holland presented their Championship credentials with their first win over the Azzurri in 30 years.
And on the rare occasions the Italians did pose a threat, there was no way past Edwin van der Sar, who produced his finest display of the season.
As usual the Dutch had come into a major tournament with rumours of trouble in the camp but they showed nothing but a united front last night.
At the end, the Holland fans could not contain themselves as they taunted the Italians with chants of ‘Always look on the bright side of life’.
They descended on Berne like an Orange tidal wave. Orange shirts, orange wigs, orange clogs. One woman was seen sporting a hat with orange Van Gogh-style sunflowers. And, to be honest, there were far too many Dutchmen wearing milkmaid-style skirts.
Then there were all the orange faces. English WAGS used to spending most of their lives in suntan salons would have blended in perfectly.
There must have been 20,000 Dutchmen inside the 32,000 capacity stadium and another 5,000 outside.
Thanks to the Dutch, Euro 2008 got the kiss of life it so desperately needed after a vastly disappointing start.
True to their Total Football heritage, the Dutch made all the running with slick passing and quick movement, both on and off the ball.
And yet it was Italy who had the first chance in the 11th minute when a Gennaro Gattuso cross found Luca Toni only for the Bayern striker to head a yard past the far post.
Holland should have taken the lead five minutes later when Dirk Kuyt threaded a lovely through ball.
Van Nistelrooy went in, danced round Gigi Buffon and appeared to be taken down.
The former Manchester United striker stayed on his feet but was forced wide.
When the Holland opener arrived on 25 minutes, it was so far offside even Mr Magoo would have spotted it.
Buffon battered out a cross as far as Van Bronckhorst and the ex-Arsenal man crashed a shot back into the box.
Van Nistelrooy, a good two yards offside, then turned the ball past Buffon.
Yet Swedish referee Peter Frojdfeldt gave the goal. Even more amazingly, only Marco Materazzi complained.
Holland were now in charge and yet Italy might still have had an equaliser when Van Bronckhorst was forced to clear an Andrea Pirlo corner off the line.
But immediately the Dutch swept forward on the counter with Rafael van der Vaart finding the overlapping Van Bronckhorst on the left. The full-back made ground before swinging an enormous cross over towards Kuyt.
The Liverpool man’s header took Gianluca Zambrotta out of the game and Sneijder beat Buffon at the near post.
And with 10 minutes to play another Van Bronckhorst surge set up Kuyt. His shot was saved by Buffon but the striker recovered to cross for Van Bronckhorst, who nodded in the third.
The noise in the crowd was booming. And, as you can imagine, it went on long into the night.

The Dutch carried several injuries into the match, but the Italians started with nine players over 30 and could not match the Netherlands for creativity and doggedness.
"It was a historic feat. This was Italy, the world champion," Netherlands coach Marco van Basten said. "I cannot name one player who played poorly."
Edwin van der Sar, the 37-year-old Netherlands goalkeeper, produced a stunning save on Andrea Pirlo's free kick to prevent Italy from getting back in the game in the 78th.
Van Nistelrooy's breakthrough goal was claimed to be offside by Italy, but the striker deflected a 20-meter (yard) shot from van Bronckhorst past Gianluigi Buffon with an Italy defender off the field next to the goal.
The second goal was a perfect counter. Van Bronckhorst first kicked a ball off his own line in a goalmouth scramble and immediately rushed up the left, where he took a long pass from Rafael van der Vaart. The Italians had trouble dragging their aging feet back and were woefully out of position when van Bronckhost sent a defense-splitting pass to Dirk Kuyt on the right.
The Liverpool player, who only started because of a groin injury to Arjen Robben, headed it perfectly into the path of Sneijder and the midfielder volleyed it past Buffon. There may not be a better goal in the tournament.
"We have been able to play superb football," Sneijder said. "Now we have to continue in the same vein."
The defeat left Italy last in Group C after France and Romania drew 0-0. A defeat against the Romanians could send the Azzurri out by Friday.
"We have to accept this loss and look ahead to our next two games," Italy coach Roberto Donadoni said. "That's the great thing about this (tournament). We face Romania right away and we need a win to restore our pride. We have to go out onto the field believing we can win."

With three goals in one game, Italy already conceded one more goal than in the whole World Cup two years ago.
"It was one of the ugliest games in the last 12 years," Buffon said. "In the name of the entire team, I think I have to apologize to all the Italian fans."
It was not supposed to be like that, especially since the Dutch missed their mercurial wingers Robben and Robin van Persie. On top of that, its defense was supposed to be brittle, especially against tall men.
Van Basten, however, surprised everyone by playing Khalid Boulahrouz, who only came into the squad last week to replace the injured Ryan Babel.
It was by far the biggest victory for van Basten in his four-year spell for the Netherlands and it will increase the pressure on Donadoni, who has never been able to fully assume the mantle of his World Cup-winning predecessor Marcello Lippi.
"We allowed two goals due to errors, but Holland did not completely outplay us," Donadoni said. "We started well, then we struggled a bit with our game plan. But from the desire point of view, the guys reacted well. Tonight just wasn't a night when the shots went in for us."
Italy standout defender Fabio Cannavaro was on crutches watching from the dugout after an ankle injury put him out of the competition ahead of its start. Marco Materazzi, a hero of the 2006 World Cup, was supposed to take over his place seamlessly.
It didn't work.
Materazzi could not keep pace with a reinvigorated van Nistelrooy. Embarrassingly, he had to be substituted in the 53rd by Fabio Grosso and Donadoni had to rework his whole defense instead of beefing up the attack.
"We had three or four chances we didn't take advantage of," Donadoni said.
The victory ended a 30-year drought for the Dutch against Italy, who famously beat them in the semifinals of the 2000 European Championship, which the Netherlands hosted.
At the Wankdorf stadium, most of the stands looked an intense orange, and when most started singing "Hup, Holland, Hup," the Italians might have known it was all over.
Donadoni brought in Alessandro Del Piero in the 64th minute, but that too seemed to be for old time's sake. He had a good shot on goal, but he faced the older man, this one playing his best, van der Sar.

A peine le ballon avait-il franchi la ligne que les deux monstres diffusaient en boucle, et sous toutes les coutures, la position illicite du buteur madrilène. A trop discuter, et à trop montrer à M. Fröjdfeldt qu'il s'était trompé, Luca Toni a fini par être (logiquement ?) sanctionné d'un carton jaune. Nul doute que ce tout nouveau phénomène vidéo n'a pas fini de faire parler, mais peut-être pas autant que la défaite logique des Azzurri.
La Nazionale, et pas uniquement sa défense, n'a tout simplement pas été à la hauteur ce soir. L'adversaire, toujours prometteur mais rarement à l'arrivée ces dernières années, a peut-être enfin trouvé son bonheur. Les noms, surtout en ce qui concerne les joueurs défensifs, sont cette fois moins ronflants mais le collectif beaucoup plus solide, et mené de main de maître par un tandem Sneijder - van der Vaart impressionnant de technicité. Hormis un joli gri-gri signé Pirlo avant le repos, les gestes techniques de grande classe, relativement nombreux pour un tel match à enjeu, ont tous été néerlandais. Les occasions aussi. Sans un crochet un peu trop long sur Buffon, van Nistelrooy aurait d'ailleurs ouvert la marque un peu plus tôt (18e). Cela aurait également pu venir d'une tête contre son camp de Materazzi, peu en verve ce soir et remplacé juste après la pause (25e). C'est finalement venu de van Nistelrooy, déviant de près un missile de Sneijder (27e). Comme pour mieux éviter les longs discours, les Bataves se sont alors empressés de doubler la mise, cette fois régulièrement et à l'issue d'un contre d'école (32e). Transversale de van Bronckhorst, remise de la tête de Kuyt et volée de Sneijder, décidément dans tous les bons coups. Imparable.
Luca Toni s'est manqué
Sans un somptueux réflexe de Buffon devant le même van Nistelrooy (43e), l'Italie aurait même pu regagner les vestiaires avec une véritable valise. Bien sûr, les Transalpins se sont également créés quelques situations, souvent par Di Natale, mais ils ont à chaque fois fait le mauvais choix dans le dernier geste (3e, 12e). Et quand ils ont cru trouver la faille, sur un corner dévié de Pirlo, ils ont surtout trouvé un Van Bronckhorst bien calé sur sa ligne (31e). Confortés par leur net avantage au score, les Oranje ont avant tout cherché à le défendre en deuxième période. L'Italie a eu le ballon, mais elle n'en a pas fait grand-chose de bon jusqu'au dernier quart d'heure de jeu. Même le canonnier Luca Toni, seul face à van der Sar, s'est complètement manqué (76e). L'Italie a fini par pousser, vraiment, mais sans jamais réussir à tromper la vigilance du dernier rempart adverse. A Holanda respondeu em investida de Nistelrooy dentro da área. O atacante chegou a driblar o goleiro Buffon, mas perdeu o equilíbrio e o ângulo para chutar.
Depois de criar mais algumas chances, a Holanda abriu o placar, aos 25. Buffon afastou a bola de soco após uma cobrança de falta. O ataque holandês chutou de fora da área na sequêcnia do rebote, e Nistelrooy, em posição duvidosa, desviou para as redes.
Os holandeses ampliaram seis minutos depois em um contra-ataque mortal. A bola foi lançada da ponta esquerda para a direita. Kuyt cabeceou para a área, e Sneijder bateu de primeira para o gol.
Ainda antes do intervalo, Nistelrooy ficou de frente para Buffon, que defendeu com os pés o forte chute do atacante.

A Itália começou assustando mais. Logo aos três minutos, Luca Toni por pouco não desvia um cruzamento para as redes. Aos 11, o mesmo Luca Toni cabeceou a bola perto da trave. A Holanda respondeu em investida de Nistelrooy dentro da área. O atacante chegou a driblar o goleiro Buffon, mas perdeu o equilíbrio e o ângulo para chutar.
Depois de criar mais algumas chances, a Holanda abriu o placar, aos 25. Buffon afastou a bola de soco após uma cobrança de falta. O ataque holandês chutou de fora da área na sequêcnia do rebote, e Nistelrooy, em posição duvidosa, desviou para as redes.
Os holandeses ampliaram seis minutos depois em um contra-ataque mortal. A bola foi lançada da ponta esquerda para a direita. Kuyt cabeceou para a área, e Sneijder bateu de primeira para o gol.
Ainda antes do intervalo, Nistelrooy ficou de frente para Buffon, que defendeu com os pés o forte chute do atacante.

Hamburg - Eine tolle erste Halbzeit reichte den Niederländern zum 3:0-Sieg gegen Italien im Duell zweier Top-Favoriten bei dieser EM. Auch wenn die Niederländer vor 30.777 Zuschauern in Bern Schwächen in der Defensive offenbarten, stellten sie mit hervorragendem Offensivspiel ungewohnt anfällige Italiener vor große Probleme.
HAMMERGRUPPE C: ITALIENER OHNE PUNCH, NIEDERLÄNDER ABGEKLÄRT
Italien steht somit vor der Partie am Freitag gegen Rumänien (18 Uhr, Liveticker SPIEGEL ONLINE) bereits unter großem Druck, während die Niederlande gegen die enttäuschenden Franzosen (mehr...) bereits den Einzug ins Viertelfinale perfekt machen können (20.45 Uhr, Liveticker SPIEGEL ONLINE).
"3:0 gegen ein so erfahrenes Italien zu gewinnen, das haben wir nicht erwartet", sagte der niederländische Bondscoach Marco van Basten. "Es war wirklich eine gute Teamleistung. Wenn wir als Mannschaft auftreten, haben wir auch eine hohe fußballerische Qualität." Der 43-Jährige blieb dennoch nur vorsichtig optimistisch: "Wir haben nur eine Partie gespielt und auch Glück gehabt. Wir müssen noch gegen Frankreich antreten, eine sehr starke Mannschaft. Und gegen Rumänien haben wir in der EM-Qualifikation auch schon verloren", so van Basten.
Hamburgs Mittelfeldstar Rafael van der Vaart war ebenso in der niederländischen Startaufstellung zu finden wie Torwart Edwin van der Sar, der sein 14. EM-Spiel absolvierte und damit Dennis Bergkamp und Philip Cocu als Rekordhalter ablöste. EM-Premieren waren dagegen die Auftritte des niederländischen Trainers Marco van Basten und seines italienischen Pendants Roberto Donadoni. Die beiden spielten sechs Jahre gemeinsam beim AC Mailand und sind noch heute befreundet.
Die erste Halbzeit war eine der bisher besten dieser Europameisterschaft, wobei Italien zunächst mehr Druck ausüben konnte. Bayern-Stürmer Luca Toni verpasste nach drei Minuten eine Hereingabe von Angriffskollege Antonio Di Natale nur knapp. Immer wieder kamen die Italiener über die rechte Seite zu Gelegenheiten. Der finale Pass wurde dann aber meist zu ungenau geschlagen.
Nach zehn Minuten tauchte auch das niederländische Team in des Gegners Hälfte auf, ein Freistoß von Wesley Sneijder wurde abgeblockt, van der Vaart scheiterte mit einem Fernschuss. Italien blieb dennoch gefährlich. Nach einer Flanke hätte Toni per Kopf besser auf Sturmpartner Di Natale ablegen sollen, so verfehlte sein unplazierter Kopfball weit das Ziel (13.).
Obwohl der Weltmeister im Mittelfeld sehr dicht gestaffelt agierte, kamen die Niederlande immer wieder zu Chancen. Nach einem feinen Pass von Dirk Kuyt stand van Oranje-Angreifer Ruud van Nistelrooy plötzlich frei vor Gianluigi Buffon. Der Keeper kam heraus und berührte van Nistelrooy im Strafraum, der geriet ins Straucheln, ließ sich aber fairerweise nicht fallen. Der Pfiff des schwedischen Schiedsrichters Peter Fröjdfeldt blieb aus - ein Elfmeter wäre zumindest vertretbar gewesen (19.).
Die Niederlande wurden in einer Partie auf hohem Niveau immer stärker. In der 25. Minute klärte Italiens Abwehrspieler Marco Materazzi im letzten Moment per Kopf. Nur eine Minute später stand van Nistelrooy in einer kuriosen Szene goldrichtig. Sneijder zog von der Strafraumgrenze ab, van Nistelrooy lenkte den Ball unhaltbar ins Netz. Dabei stand er deutlich hinter der italienischen Abwehrreihe, dennoch war sein Treffer regelkonform, da hinter dem Tor noch Abwehrspieler Christian Panucci lag, der sich kurz zuvor bei einem Zusammenprall mit Buffon verletzt hatte und damit das Abseits aufhob.
Italiens Trainer Donadoni sagte zu der Szene: "Wir haben Tore kassiert und waren ziemlich naiv dabei. Jetzt will ich nicht lange debattieren über das erste Tor. Wir haben die Naivität teuer bezahlt."
Der Weltmeister wankte und bekam einen weiteren Schlag versetzt: Nach schönem Zuspiel von Kuyt traf Sneijder per Volleyschuss zum 2:0 (31.). "Ich habe nicht gewagt, von so einem Start zu träumen", sagte der Torschütze nach dem Spiel, welches nun immer mehr an Klasse gewann. Nur kurze Zeit nach dem 2:0 verpasste Di Natale nur knapp den Anschlusstreffer. Trotz besserer Offensive präsentierte sich Italien weiter anfällig in der Defensive, kurz vor dem Halbzeitpfiff tauchte erneut van Nistelrooy frei vor Torwart Buffon auf, der den Ball aber über das Tor lenken konnte.
Die Italiener bemühten sich in der zweiten Halbzeit um einen geregelten Spielaufbau, Gianluca Zambrottas Schuss flog in der 54. Minute um einen Meter am Tor vorbei. Die Niederlande ließen sich nun mehr und mehr in die eigene Hälfte drängen. Angreifer Toni konnte sich trotz optischem Übergewicht nicht gut in Szene setzen, denn aussichtsreiche Zuspiele auf den Stürmer blieben weiterhin aus. Es mangelte an guten Ideen, was auch daran lag, dass Spielmacher Andrea Pirlo über weite Strecken untertauchte.
Donadoni reagierte und brachte Altstar Alessandro Del Piero in der 64. Minute für Di Natale. Der Juve-Stürmer führte sich mit einem Schuss ein, den van der Sar ohne Mühe festhalten konnte (66.). Italien kam noch einmal ins Spiel zurück. Toni wurde in der 76. Minute schön freigespielt, sein Heber über van der Sar verfehlte allerdings das Ziel. Edwin van der Sar rückte immer mehr in den Fokus. Er hielt mit zwei Weltklasseparaden gegen Fabio Grosso (78.) und Andrea Pirlo (79.) seine Mannschaft im Spiel.
Gerade in der Phase, als Italien dem Anschlusstreffer so nah war, sorgte Giovanni van Bronckhorst für die Entscheidung (80.). Sein Kopfball bedeutete das 3:0 und eine historische Schlappe für den Weltmeister (Donadoni: "Ein schwarzer Abend"), der nun gegen Rumänien unbedingt gewinnen muss.
"Das macht uns unglaublich stolz. Das erste Spiel ist immer unglaublich wichtig und so gegen Italien zu gewinnen, das gibt uns viel Selbstvertrauen", sagte Torschütze Sneijder. "Ich habe nicht gewagt, von so einem Start zu träumen."

Schon nach dem ersten Gruppenspiel der Euro steht der amtierende Weltmeister vor dem Aus. Langsam und behäbig wirkte der Titelträger von 2006 wie eine hilflose Altherrenmannschaft im Angriffswirbel der Niederländer. Die Oranje-Elf hat sich dagegen mit einem Spiel in den kleinen Kreis der Topfavoriten katapultiert.
So schwach wie bei diesem EM-Auftakt ist Italien wohl noch nie in ein großes Turnier gestartet. Roberto Donadoni ist seit Amtsantritt höchst umstritten, mit Francesco Totti und Alessandro Nesta haben zwei Weltklassespieler seit der WM 2006 ihren Rücktritt erklärt, die man hier gut hätte gebrauchen können. Dazu kommt der Ausfall von Kapitän Fabio Cannavaro, der unumstrittenen Führungsfigur in der Mannschaft,. Der Substanzverlust durch den Ausfall dieser drei bei gleichzeitigem Verzicht auf Verjüngung oder Erneuerung bringt Italien in eine massive Krise. Auf den technisch starken, beeindruckenden Offensivfußball der Holländer hatte der Weltmeister keine Antwort, in der ersten Halbzeit gab es kein funktionierendes Offensivspiel. Der vermeintliche Top-Torjäger Luca Toni fand überhaupt nicht statt, bekam aber auch nur wenige brauchbare Zuspiele.
Donadoni braucht Mut
Wo kann Italien in den kommenden Tagen ansetzen, um den Weg für zwei Siege in den verbleibenden beiden Gruppenspielen zu bereiten? Vor allem fehlt Donadoni wohl der Mut, tiefgreifende Reformen einzuleiten. Insgesamt zehn Weltmeister brachte Italien ins Spiel, viel Erfahrung in der Mannschaft, die aber auch den mit Abstand höchsten Altersschnitt aller Turnierteilnehmer hat. Auf der italienischen Bank sitzen mit Daniele de Rossi (24) und Alberto Aquilani (23) vom AS Rom die beiden besten italienischen Mittelfeldspieler der abgelaufenen Saison in der Serie A, aber um auf diese beiden zu bauen, müsste Donadoni die Mittelfeldbesetzung seines Stammvereins Milan mit Ambrosini, Gattuso und Pirlo auseinanderbrechen.
Im italienischen Abwehr-Torso könnte Giorgio Chiellini neue Energie einbringen. Der 23-Jährige machte schon vor der EM durch große Aggressivität auf sich aufmerksam: Sein Trainingsfoul beförderte Cannavaro aus dem Turnier und sorgte damit erst für die aktuelle Abwehr-Katastrophe.
Weltklassepartie von van der Sar
Zumindest in der zweiten Hälfte offenbarten die Niederländer aber auch einige Schwächen. Die Abwehr um die biederen Handwerker Ooijer und Mathijsen geriet spätestens nach der Einwechslung von Del Piero auch ordentlich unter Druck, aber im genau richtigen Moment wuchs ein Mann über sich hinaus, der auch schon im Spätherbst seiner Laufbahn steht: Torhüter Edwin van der Sar spielte eine perfekte Partie und entwickelte sich zum herausragenden Rückhalt seiner Mannschaft. Umstritten und schon abgeschrieben erlebt der 37-Jährige die Saison seines Lebens, ist in England Meister geworden und hat mit ManU die Champions League gewonnen. Nun eröffnet er sein wohl letztes großes Turnier mit einer Weltklasseleistung.
Geglücktes Aufstellungspuzzle bei der Elftal
Mit zwei vollkommen überraschenden Nominierungen lag Bondscoach Marco van Basten komplett richtig. Der erst in letzter Minute nachnominierte Ex-Hamburger Khaled Boulahrouz spielte einen starken rechten Verteidiger und mit Dirk Kuyt brachte van Basten einen Stürmer auf der rechten Seite, den er in den vergangenen zwei Jahren meist draußen ließ und dessen EM-Nominierung schon höchst umstritten war.
