Holland’s 30-year wait for a victory over Italy ended in glorious fashion in Berne as Marco van Basten’s side rampaged their way to a 3-0 defeat of the world champions.

A clearly offside goal from Ruud van Nistelrooy may have kickstarted the rout but there was no doubting that the Dutch, superior in every area, fully deserved a victory that was completed by Wesley Sneijder’s close-range strike and a late breakaway goal by the outstanding Gio van Bronckhorst.

Uncharacteristically shaky in defence, the Italians were given a painful reminder of the importance of their World Cup captain Fabio Cannavaro, who was ruled out of the tournament after suffering an ankle injury in training last week.

Marco Materazzi took Cannavaro’s place in the centre of defence but filling the former world player of the year’s boots was to prove beyond the Inter Milan veteran, who was substituted ten minutes into the second half.

The first clear indication of the extent to which the Italians would miss Cannavaro came after quarter of an hour, when van Nistelrooy got in behind Materazzi only to be let down by a heavy first touch as he attempted to go round Buffon.

Materazzi made partial amends by heading Sneijder’s free-kick from the left over his own bar. But there was no such let-off for the Italians when Rafael van der Vart swung in a similar delivery from the opposite flank minutes later.

Buffon could only the palm the ball away at his back post and when the ball was rolled back to Sneijder the midfielder unleashed a fierce low drive that van Nistelrooy turned into the net from four yards out.

As the striker was clearly offside, the ensuing protests may have been justified but their only result was a yellow card for Luca Toni.

Five minutes later the Italians found themselves in deeper trouble after a move that suggests Total Football is alive and well in the Netherlands. Having cleared Andrea Pirlo’s corner off his own line, van Bronckhurst immediately sprinted forward to take possession once more in the acres of space that had opened up down the left.

The Barcelona defender’s cross was knocked down by Kuyt from beyond the back post and Sneijder, having stolen a yard on Materazzi, lashed the bouncing ball in between Buffon’s left glove and the near post.

The world champions could offer little in response, their one real moment of menace before the break coming when Antonio di Natale’s volley bounced through the legs of Khalid Boulahrouz with the result that Edwin van der Sar needed two attempts to smother the ball.

Van Nistelrooy should have extended the Dutch lead a minute before the break after Sneijder’s superb pass once again put him in behind Materazzi.

From just inside the box, the striker pushed his shot towards the bottom corner only to see it ricocheted off Buffon’s leg and up over the bar.

Within ten minutes of the restart, Italian coach Roberto Donadoni had decided radical surgery was required for his malfunctioning back four.

Materazzi was hauled off, Fabio Grosso introduced at left-back with Gianluigi Zambrotta switching sides to allow rightback Christian Panucci to move into the centre.

Alessandro Del Piero was also thrown into the fray and the Juventus forward’s prodding helped the Italians finally display some of their true quality.

But after Toni had lifted their best chance of the night over the bar, van der Sar produced superb stops to keep out Grosso’s low drive and one of Pirlo’s trademark freekicks in quick succession.

Inevitably gaps were being left at the back and the Dutch took advantage with another counter-attack move of breathtaking fluency that finished with van Bronckhorst playing the overlapping Kuyt into space inside the box.

Buffon blocked the Liverpool striker’s shot but he was able to collect the loose ball and chip it into the area for van Bronckhorst to head home.

Poor starts are nothing new for Italy but, on this evidence, a World Cup and Euro double looks beyond Donadoni’s men.

It was a display that thrilled the long-suffering Holland fans, who hope for so much from the most naturally gifted players in Europe, yet expect so little.

There were immense displays from FC Twente’s Orlando Engelaar and Hamburg’s Nigel de Jong as the unpredictable Dutch turned the clock back to the golden days of Johan Cruyff and Johann Neeskens.

If anything, Engelaar — as big and powerful as Patrick Vieira in his prime — was the pick of this mouth-watering new Orange crop.

The Italians looked every day the oldest team in the tournament. They aged before our eyes as Holland presented their Championship credentials with their first win over the Azzurri in 30 years.

And on the rare occasions the Italians did pose a threat, there was no way past Edwin van der Sar, who produced his finest display of the season.

As usual the Dutch had come into a major tournament with rumours of trouble in the camp but they showed nothing but a united front last night.

At the end, the Holland fans could not contain themselves as they taunted the Italians with chants of ‘Always look on the bright side of life’.

They descended on Berne like an Orange tidal wave. Orange shirts, orange wigs, orange clogs. One woman was seen sporting a hat with orange Van Gogh-style sunflowers. And, to be honest, there were far too many Dutchmen wearing milkmaid-style skirts.

Then there were all the orange faces. English WAGS used to spending most of their lives in suntan salons would have blended in perfectly.

There must have been 20,000 Dutchmen inside the 32,000 capacity stadium and another 5,000 outside.

Thanks to the Dutch, Euro 2008 got the kiss of life it so desperately needed after a vastly disappointing start.

True to their Total Football heritage, the Dutch made all the running with slick passing and quick movement, both on and off the ball.

And yet it was Italy who had the first chance in the 11th minute when a Gennaro Gattuso cross found Luca Toni only for the Bayern striker to head a yard past the far post.

Holland should have taken the lead five minutes later when Dirk Kuyt threaded a lovely through ball.

Van Nistelrooy went in, danced round Gigi Buffon and appeared to be taken down.

The former Manchester United striker stayed on his feet but was forced wide.

When the Holland opener arrived on 25 minutes, it was so far offside even Mr Magoo would have spotted it.

Buffon battered out a cross as far as Van Bronckhorst and the ex-Arsenal man crashed a shot back into the box.

Van Nistelrooy, a good two yards offside, then turned the ball past Buffon.

Yet Swedish referee Peter Frojdfeldt gave the goal. Even more amazingly, only Marco Materazzi complained.

Holland were now in charge and yet Italy might still have had an equaliser when Van Bronckhorst was forced to clear an Andrea Pirlo corner off the line.

But immediately the Dutch swept forward on the counter with Rafael van der Vaart finding the overlapping Van Bronckhorst on the left. The full-back made ground before swinging an enormous cross over towards Kuyt.

The Liverpool man’s header took Gianluca Zambrotta out of the game and Sneijder beat Buffon at the near post.

And with 10 minutes to play another Van Bronckhorst surge set up Kuyt. His shot was saved by Buffon but the striker recovered to cross for Van Bronckhorst, who nodded in the third.

The noise in the crowd was booming. And, as you can imagine, it went on long into the night.
