LA VIGILIA - Sulle ali dell'ottimismo. Ma senza esagerare. Gli azzurri si apprestano a scendere in campo contro l'Olanda con un obiettivo comune: confermare di essere ancora i primi della classe. Intanto la Nazionale questa mattina ha svolto una seduta molto leggera. Donadoni, al contrario di altre vigilie, ha infatti preferito il lavoro atletico a quello tecnico. Nessuna partitella, quindi, in grado di chiarire gli ultimi dubbi.
CANNAVARO - Dopo l'ultima rifinitura, pranzo con il presidente del Coni, Gianni Petrucci e il sottosegretario alla presidenza del consiglio, con delega allo Sport, Rocco Crimi. Resta infine da capire dove si potrà accomodare Fabio Cannavaro. Il presidente federale Giancarlo Abete ha assicurato che si sta battendo per assicurargli un posto in panchina. In caso contrario il capitano non giocatore occuperà una posizione in tribuna, molto vicina a Donadoni e compagni. Interrogativo risolto nel pomeriggio. Dopo la telefonata di auguri di Berlusconi a Donadoni, è infatti arrivata anche quella dell'Uefa, che ha concesso a Cannavaro di accomodarsi in panchina durante Olanda-Italia.
METEO - Il meteo a Berna non dà certezze. La temperatura attuale è di 20° e il cielo alterna nuvole a raggi di sole. La pioggia non è esclusa. In ogni caso questa sera il termometro scenderà fino a 12°. Una macchia arancione si sta dirigendo verso lo stadio: almeno a livello di tifo la nazionale di Van Basten per ora vince il confronto con gli azzurri. Intanto alle 18.35 la Nazionale di Donadoni ha lasciato l'hotel per dirigersi verso lo stadio dove è arrivata alle 19. La prima notizia sulla formazione azzurra è una sorpresa: in campo contro l'Olanda ci sarà Massimo Ambrosini al posto di De Rossi, che prima della gara siede in panchina in giacca e cravatta, come Amelia, Grosso e gli altri azzurri che non partiranno titolari.
QUI OLANDA - Intanto dal ritiro olandese filtra la notizia sull'ultima scelta di van Basten: giocherà Kuyt e non Afellay nel terzetto (ci sono anche Van der Vaart e Snejider) dietro a van Nistelrooy. Il c.t. punta quindi su fisicità ed esperienza.
COMMENTATORE - Tomas Helveg fa il commentatore per la tv danese. Quattro anni fa a Guimaraes era in campo con la Danimarca nella gara di esordio della Nazionale del Trap all'Europeo portoghese. La sfida, sotto un sole cocente, terminò 0-0 e poi sappiamo come andò a finire: il famoso biscottone con la Svezia e azzurri a casa con Cassano in lacrime. Helveg non si sbilancia. "E' un girone pazzesco - afferma mentre guarda in tribuna stampa sul piccolo schermo Romania-Francia -. Basta vedere che fatica stanno facendo i Bleus per capire che sarà dura per tutti".

In einer hochklassigen Partie waren Ruud van Nistelrooy in der 26., Wesley Sneijder nach einem schönen Konter über drei Stationen in der 31. und Giovanni van Bronckhorst in der 79. Minute für die Niederlande erfolgreich.


Die Italiener hielten zwar über die gesamte Spielzeit dagegen, kamen aber mit dem Gegner über weite Strecken des Spiels nicht in den Griff und mussten sich in die verdiente Niederlage fügen.

DE VIGILIA - Op de vleugels van optimisme. Maar zonder overdrijving. De Azzurri zijn met de voorbereiding van een race tegen Nederland, met een gemeenschappelijk doel: te bevestigen dat hij nog steeds de top van de klasse. Inmiddels heeft de Nationale deze morgen een vergadering die heel licht. Donadoni, in tegenstelling tot andere vigils, heeft er de voorkeur aan het werk atletische dan technische. Geen partitella dus in staat om de laatste twijfels.
CANNAVARO - Na het laatste, lunch met de voorzitter van het CONI, Gianni Petrucci en de staatssecretaris voor het voorzitterschap van de Raad door de delegatie van sport, Rocco Crimi. Het is eindelijk te begrijpen waar we kunnen Fabio Cannavaro. De federale voorzitter Giancarlo Abete is zeker van zijn dat u vecht om hem te beloven een plaats op de bank. With France and Romania playing out a goalless stalemate earlier on in the day at the Letigrund Stadion, the Dutch are now favourites to progress from Group C.

Worst EURO defeat
Ruud van Nistelrooy side-footed the Oranje ahead in the 26th minute, a lead doubled superbly by his Real Madrid CF colleague Wesley Sneijder soon after. Edwin van der Sar, becoming only the third player to appear in four UEFA European Championships, then kept the advantage intact, leaving Giovanni van Bronckhorst to complete the scoring with a headed third in the 79th minute. The Netherlands can now look forward with confidence to Friday's meeting with France, while Italy must pick themselves up from a worst-ever EURO defeat when they face Romania.

Dutch dominant
The early skirmishes gave scant indication of what was to come. Andrea Pirlo dispossessed Giovanni van Bronckhorst with an exquisite tackle and freed Antonio Di Natale but his pass lacked the precision to pick out Luca Toni. The FC Bayern München striker did get a glimpse of goal in the 12th minute, rising to flick a header wide from an equally promising position, yet that was about as close as the world champions got in a first half subsequently dominated by Marco van Basten's side. Dirk Kuyt, ever willing on the right flank, outmuscled Gianluca Zambrotta in the 18th minute and slipped a delicious low pass to Van Nistelrooy who touched it beyond Gianluigi Buffon but stayed on his feet after making contact with the Italy captain. That was the last act of charity from the Dutch, as Roberto Donadoni's team paid for the concession of a number of free-kicks on the periphery of their area.

Opening goal
Sneijder first fizzed one set-piece in from the left which Marco Materazzi headed clear. Then Rafael van der Vaart did likewise from the right, the scrambling Buffon's punched clearance eventually reaching birthday boy Sneijder whose powerful drive from the corner of the box was side-footed in by Van Nistelrooy as the Azzurri defence appealed for offside. Italy went close to levelling from an inswinging corner five minutes later yet were caught flat-footed in the 31st minute when Van Bronckhorst, who had cleared off the line, was able to charge half the length of the field unchallenged.

Probing Sneijder
The Feyenoord man took advantage of the time afforded him, pinging a perfect crossfield ball to Kuyt whose cushioned header was spectacularly hooked inside Buffon's near post by the leaping Sneijder. Italy's three-man midfield of Gennaro Gattuso, Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini could not contain Sneijder as he probed the left side, creating space for Van Bronckhorst. The full-back who was able all too easily to dissect an Azzurri back line missing injured captain Fabio Cannavaro with a pass which released Van Nistelrooy on goal. Buffon stood tall, however, clipping the shot over with his feet.

Van der Sar saves
Italy sought a way back into the match after the break. Substitute Alessandro Del Piero failed to take advantage of two half-chances before Toni lofted a shot over when free on the penalty spot on 76 minutes. Van der Sar then foiled Fabio Grosso before diving at full stretch to keep out a Pirlo free-kick, leaving Van Bronckhorst to wrap things up at the other end following smart work by Kuyt. The last time the Netherlands beat Italy they went on to reach the 1978 FIFA World Cup final, something they will hope is a lucky omen as they look to claim a first European crown since their coach volleyed them to glory in 1988.
