The Barcelona defender’s cross was knocked down by Kuyt from beyond the back post and Sneijder, having stolen a yard on Materazzi, lashed the bouncing ball in between Buffon’s left glove and the near post.
The world champions could offer little in response, their one real moment of menace before the break coming when Antonio di Natale’s volley bounced through the legs of Khalid Boulahrouz with the result that Edwin van der Sar needed two attempts to smother the ball.
Van Nistelrooy should have extended the Dutch lead a minute before the break after Sneijder’s superb pass once again put him in behind Materazzi.

C'est la première grosse sensation de cet Euro 2008 ! L'Italie, championne du monde en titre, a essuyé lundi une véritable correction pour son entrée en lice dans la compétition, étrillée 3-0 par une intenable sélection des Pays-Bas. Bien aidés il est vrai par l'oubli arbitral d'un hors-jeu flagrant sur le premier but de Van Nistelrooy, les Néerlandais ont ensuite enfoncé le clou par Sneijder et Van Bronckhorst. Annoncée favorite de cet Euro jusque dans les petits papiers des sélectionneurs conviés à l'événement, la France a essuyé une sévère désillusion ce lundi en concédant le match nul devant la Roumanie. Ce n'est certainement rien pourtant en comparaison de la vertigineuse déconvenue subie par l'Italie dans la soirée. Battus d'entrée de compétition par des Pays-Bas euphoriques, les champions du monde sont tombés de haut à Berne, compromettant d'ores et déjà sérieusement leurs chances de qualification pour les quarts de finale. A ce train là, le France-Italie du 17 juin sera très probablement décisif. Le vaincu d'alors sans doute invité à faire ses valises.
Le football total, marque de fabrique des Oranje à l'époque où un certain Cruyff écrivait l'histoire du ballon rond, a pris un sacré coup de jeune en cette troisième journée de l'Euro 2008. Orpheline de Robben et de Babel, privé à la dernière minute de Championnat d'Europe pour cause de blessure à la cheville, la sélection néerlandaise a démontré que Van Basten était toutefois loin d'être à court d'arguments offensifs. Avec Kuyt, Van der Vaart et Sneijder pour alimenter l'indéboulonnable Van Nistelrooy sur le front de l'attaque, les Bataves ont tout bonnement pris à la gorge une Squadra Azzurra pour sa part meurtrie, manifestement, par l'absence de Cannavaro.
Dès les premières minutes de jeu, le ballon prenait plus volontiers la direction des buts de Buffon. Exceptée une intervention maladroite de Toni, lequel chipait involontairement le cuir à un Di Natale en bien meilleure posture peu avant le premier quart d'heure, l'Italie n'avait que peu d'occasions de sortir de son camp et la première véritable alerte du match échouait dans les pieds de Van Nistelrooy, même si le dribble trop long de l'avant-centre néerlandais épargnait l'arrière-garde transalpine (18e). Huit minutes plus tard en revanche, le buteur du real Madrid ne manquait pas la cible. Une réaction d'orgueil vaine
Une ouverture du score hélas entachée d'une position de hors-jeu niée par l'homme en noir qui se voyait en outre trahi par ses assistants, lesquels laissaient libre la diffusion des images du forfait sur les écrans géants d'un stade en ébullition. Ce coup du sort assassin, les Italiens n'allaient pas s'en remettre. Dans la foulée, les espaces s'élargissant, les Oranje déroulaient et portaient à nouveau l'estocade. Cette fois, la réalisation de Sneijder ne souffrait d'aucune contestation. Le feu-follet madrilène fusillait Buffon à la conclusion d'une superbe ouverture de Van Bronckhorst relayée par Kuyt (2-0, 31e). Avant la pause, seul Di Natale soutenait la comparaison côté transalpin mais ses audacieuses tentatives se révélaient vaines (33e et 45e). Van Nistelrooy se permettait même de manquer le face-à-face du KO, tandis qu'il butait sur le meilleur portier du monde à trois minutes du repos.
En deuxième période, l'entrée sur le terrain de Grosso à la place de Materazzi, couplée à la prise de conscience manifeste des champions du monde, établissait un nouveau rapport de force. Mieux en place et un peu plus hargneux, les joueurs de Donadoni se créaient les meilleures opportunités, notamment au cours d'un deuxième quart d'heure de feu. Pirlo, sur coup franc, sonnait d'abord la révolte (64e), puis Del Piero, à peine entré en jeu, mettait à contribution un Van der Sar jusqu'alors bien tranquille (66e et 70e). Le plus dur restait toutefois à venir pour le dernier rempart néerlandais qui devait déployer tout son talent pour détourner un missile de Grosso et un nouveau coup franc de Pirlo (78e), ce à la suite d'un lob osé mais hoirs cadre de Toni (76e).
A force de laisser passer sa chance, l'Italie s'exposait à une punition plus cruelle encore. Au plus fort de la domination transalpine, Van Bronckhorst assénait le coup de grâce à la Squadra Azzurra au terme d'un contre rondement mené en compagnie de Kuyt (3-0, 79e). La suite relevait forcément de l'anecdote pour des champions du monde littéralement humiliés. Des Italiens désormais bons derniers de la poule C et qui n'auront pas d'alternative à la victoire, vendredi, face à la Roumanie.

De wereldkampioen had echter geen antwoord op het wervelende voetbal van onze noorderburen en verloor met ruime cijfers. Al maanden is de kwetsbaarheid van de oranje defensie gespreksonderwerp nummer één in de Nederlandse media, maar het was de Italiaanse afweer die aan Zwitserse kaas deed denken. Doelman Buffon moest voorkomen dat de wereldkampioen met een 3-0 achterstand de rust introk en na de pauze slaagde Italië er maar niet in iets terug te doen.
Als vervanger voor de snelle Arjen Robben verkoos Marco van Basten aanjager Dirk Kuyt boven de meer controlerend voetballende Ibrahim Afellay. Van Persie begon als bankzitter. Achterin wisselde de Hollandse bondscoach vrijwillig. Ooijer schoof naar het hart van de defensie en op rechts stond kannibaal Boulahrouz. Bij Italië verkoos Roberto Donadoni Ambrosini boven De Rossi links van Pirlo. Precies elf minuten had Van der Vaart nodig om het eerste schot tussen de palen te plaatsen. Dat was exact de volledige oogst van de partij tussen Frankrijk en Roemenië. Aan de overkant kopte Toni een wenkende kans naast.
Het waren vooral de Nederlanders die vooruit bleven stormen. Van Nistelrooy ging neer na een contact met Buffon, maar van een strafschop was geen sprake. De onzekere Materazzi verlengde even later een vrije trap van Sneijder net niet in eigen doel.
Twee minuten later was het raak. Buffon punchte de bal onvoldoende weg. Sneijder zette opnieuw voor en Van Nistelrooy duwde binnen. De Real-spits stond meters buitenspel en wachtte op een fluitsignaal, maar dat kwam er niet. Een Italiaanse verdediger was even voordien achter de doellijn verzeild en volgens de grensrechter hief hij de buitenspelpositie op.
Een hoekschop van Pirlo werd door Van Bronckhorst van de doellijn gehaald, maar Oranje bleef het commando voeren. Vijf minuten na het openingsdoelpunt verstuurde Van Bronckhorst een splijtende lange bal. Kuyt legde met het hoofd fraai terug en Sneijder scoorde hemelsmooi.
Van de Sar had wat geluk bij een poging van Di Natale, maar de Nederlandse aanvalsgolven hielden aan. Materazzi beoordeelde een voorzet van Sneijder verkeerd en Van Nistelrooy stond oog in oog met Buffon, die redding bracht.
Kwartfinales
Italië stond in de tweede helft voor een onmogelijke opgave. De laatste lijn van de Nederlanders gaf echter geen krimp. Een schot van Zambrotta ging voorlangs en Toni besloot te zwak om Van de Sar te verrassen. De ingevallen Del Piero zorgde voor nieuwe impulsen. Toni miste hopeloos alleen voor doel en werd even later door Van der Sar afgestopt. De Nederlandse doelman hield Pirlo van een tegentreffer en aan de overkant besliste Van Bronckhorst via de voet van Zambrotta.
Italië kreeg een pak voor de broek, maar de wereldkampioen afschrijven zou voorbarig zijn. Nederland staat echter in de zwaarste groep met één been in de kwartfinales.

Misschien een wat overdreven gevoel maar wel een machig gevoel dat het Nederland door deze poule heen kan ballen (op een goede manier dus).

Worst EURO defeat
Ruud van Nistelrooy side-footed the Oranje ahead in the 26th minute, a lead doubled superbly by his Real Madrid CF colleague Wesley Sneijder soon after. Edwin van der Sar, becoming only the third player to appear in four UEFA European Championships, then kept the advantage intact, leaving Giovanni van Bronckhorst to complete the scoring with a headed third in the 79th minute. Dutch dominant
The early skirmishes gave scant indication of what was to come. Andrea Pirlo dispossessed Van Bronckhorst with an exquisite tackle and freed Antonio Di Natale but his pass lacked the precision to pick out Luca Toni. The FC Bayern München striker did get a glimpse of goal in the 12th minute, rising to flick a header wide from an equally promising position, yet that was about as close as the world champions got in a first half subsequently dominated by Marco van Basten's side. Dirk Kuyt, ever willing on the right flank, outmuscled Gianluca Zambrotta in the 18th minute and slipped a delicious low ball to Van Nistelrooy who touched it beyond the outrushing Gianluigi Buffon but stayed on his feet after making contact with the Italy captain. That was the last act of charity from the Dutch, as Roberto Donadoni's team paid for the concession of a number of free-kicks on the periphery of their area.
Opening goal
Sneijder first fizzed one set-piece in from the left which Marco Materazzi headed clear. Then Rafael van der Vaart did likewise from the right, the scrambling Buffon's punched clearance eventually reaching birthday boy Sneijder whose powerful drive from the corner of the box was side-footed in by Van Nistelrooy as the Azzurri defence appealed for offside. Italy went close to levelling from an inswinging corner five minutes later yet were caught flat-footed in the 31st minute when Van Bronckhorst, who had cleared off the line, was able to charge half the length of the field unchallenged.
Probing Sneijder
The Feyenoord man made the most of the time afforded him, pinging a perfect crossfield ball to Kuyt whose cushioned header was spectacularly hooked inside Buffon's near post by the leaping Sneijder. Italy's three-man midfield of Gennaro Gattuso, Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini could not contain Sneijder as he probed the left side, creating space for Van Bronckhorst. The full-back who was able all too easily to dissect an Azzurri back line missing injured captain Fabio Cannavaro with a pass that released Van Nistelrooy on goal. Buffon stood tall, however, clipping the shot over with his feet.
Van der Sar saves
Italy sought a way back into the match after the break. Substitute Alessandro Del Piero failed to profit from two half-chances before Toni lofted a shot over when free on the penalty spot on 76 minutes. Van der Sar then foiled Fabio Grosso before diving at full stretch to keep out a Pirlo free-kick, leaving Van Bronckhorst to wrap things up at the other end following smart work by Kuyt. The last time the Netherlands beat Italy they went on to reach the 1978 FIFA World Cup final – a lucky omen as they look to claim a first European crown since their coach volleyed them to glory in 1988.
