Het getouwtrek tussen Manchester United en Chelsea om John Obi Mikel is nog niet voorbij. De achttienjarige Nigeriaan van SFK Lyn tekende twee weken geleden voor ManU maar had eigenlijk liever naar Chelsea gegaan, zo blijkt nu.

'Ik heb niet eigen vrije wil getekend bij Manchester United', bekende de gewilde middenvelder aan de BBC. 'Ik ben zwaar onder druk gezet om dat te doen. Ik kon geen advies inwinnen bij mijn zaakwaarnemer of bij mensen die ik vertrouw. Bovendien kreeg ik weinig tijd om erover na te denken.'

Bij zijn Noorse werkgever kwam hij inmiddels niet meer opdagen. Man United-manager Alex Ferguson zegde daarom een spoedreis af om Mikel alsnog voor zich te winnen. De veelbesproken speler zit nu in Londen. 'Maar ik heb geen contact met Chelsea gehad. Ik zit alleen met mijn zaakwaarnemer in een hotel.'

Man United hoopt ondanks Mikels woorden nog altijd dat het komend seizoen op hem kan rekenen. 'Wij hebben alles volgens de regels gedaan', verkondigde algemeen directeur David Gill. 'We hebben recht op deze speler.' Maar ook Chelsea aast nog op Mikel.

Manchester United wil nu dat het bestuur van de Premier League bemiddelt. Zelfs een gang naar de FIFA sluit de club niet uit.

Mr Glazer, who also owns American football team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, secured 74.81% by Friday, but needs 75% to take United into private ownership.Angry fans were expected to demonstrate at Sunday's match at Southampton.One called Mr Glazer "thick skinned" for trying to take over a club where 93% of supporters were against him. But Mr Glazer's son Joel - who is expected to take charge of running the club - said the family wanted to ensure Manchester United continued to develop and "achieve even greater success".

"Our intention is to work with the current management, players and fans," he said, hinting that they wanted United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill to stay. A London Stock Exchange spokeswoman said it was possible shares in the club could be traded over the weekend, but she said it would not be reported to the market until Monday.

Fierce resistance

Mr Glazer has already bought the 28.7% stake of Irish racing tycoons JP McManus and John Magnier. The sports tycoon plans to borrow Ŗ265m to fund the deal, set against the club's assets.
He will raise another Ŗ275m by issuing securities but this debt will not be held against the club's assets. He will use Ŗ272m of his own cash, in the form of United equity already owned by him. Joel Glazer said: "We are delighted to make this offer to acquire one of the pre-eminent football clubs in the world.

"We are long-term sports investors and avid Manchester United fans."The club said it would wait for the "full facts" to become available before advising shareholders whether to accept the offer.The buyout is still facing fierce resistance from United fans, who hope to put a stop to it.Supporters already own an estimated 18% of the club and have tried to secure financial backing from Japanese bank Nomura to buy more shares to block his attempt to delist the club.They have also threatened to boycott the club's money-spinning merchandise machine.Sean Bones, of Shareholders United said: "What we have to do is affect revenue streams."He added that Mr Glazer was "a thick-skinned guy to try and take over a club where 93% of the customers, the supporters of the club, are against him".

They fear that under Mr Glazer's ownership ticket prices will soar, the club will be saddled with huge debts and deprived of funds to buy players. Once Mr Glazer has raised his holding to 75% or more, he can rewrite the company's articles - effectively giving him carte blanche to run the company as he wants. If he can get 90% of the stock, he can make a compulsory purchase and scoop up the other 10% of the club's shares. The government said it had urged Mr Glazer to hold talks with fans, the Football Association, and the club.

Manchester United fans awoke on Friday the 13th to confront what they always feared would be the nightmare scenario at "The Theatre of Dreams".It is the spectre, in financial terms, of ageing American tycoon Malcolm Glazer standing at the gates of Old Trafford. Glazer has become a reviled figure at Manchester United without ever setting foot inside the ground. He is seen as an outsider from across the Atlantic who will take Manchester United away from the people and into the hands of market forces.But the 76-year-old has simply refused to go away despite the protests - and whether United's fans like it or not, he is about to become their paymaster.So what are the implications for Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson and the club's supporters?

SIR ALEX FERGUSON'S FUTURE?

Ferguson has been against Glazer's takeover and has backed United fans in their opposition - he is as loyal to them as they are to him. He will want assurances about his own position, and how Glazer's arrival will impact on his firepower in the transfer market. Glazer, for all his distance from Old Trafford, will know Ferguson retains massive popularity and will not want to further fire up the wrath of his new customers by unseating a legend almost immediately after winning control. Talk of a new five-year contract for Ferguson may be wide of the mark, but initially Glazer's arrival may even strengthen his position. The great unknown is Ferguson's own reaction.Ferguson's footballing senses are fine-tuned to perfection, and if he feels Glazer will be an adversary, or will damage United, he may take matters into his own hands. An intriguing time is in prospect.

ARE MANCHESTER UNITED IN CRISIS?

It is currently a crisis caused by nothing more than uncertainty.There is no proof yet that Glazer's takeover would be bad for Manchester United, other than it takes the club's ownership out of English hands. Much has been said about United's "heart and soul" being ripped out, but Old Trafford was opened up to market forces went it went public 14 years ago - the start of a period of spectacular success.
"Not for sale" is the great rallying call for Old Trafford's faithful, but in reality almost everything at Manchester United has been for sale since that day. A hollow cry from this mega-rich and mega-marketable club.

If Glazer, as his thousands of detractors insist, is purely in it for the money, then he is highly unlikely to adopt policies that would ruin a club that became the most profitable in the world into the ground. If Manchester United's level of success goes down, so does the value of Glazer's investment. But Glazer in no benefactor in the mould of Roman Abramovich. He is a businessman who will want a return on his investment - an investment that will plunge him deep into debt. Until Glazer states his intentions, the air of uncertainty - and the protests - will continue.

BIG BUCKS FOR TRANSFERS?

Ferguson will reportedly be handed a constant Ŗ20m-a-year transfer fund. Sounds good when you say it, but not so clever in practice. This amount of cash would be heaven-sent for almost every other club, but when new champions Chelsea have an owner who might find Ŗ20m down the back of his settee, Glazer will hardly cool the rage of United's fans with this sort of talk. No more - indeed possibly less - generous than the current regime and about the same transfer kitty on offer at newly-promoted Wigan Athletic.

GLAZER PRICE INCREASES?

Glazer's investment will need to be recouped somewhere - fans fear prices will be hiked up almost as high as his trousers, whether it is season tickets or car park spaces. It may make Glazer unpopular, but it seems clear he is not bothered about winning any contests there. United have kept ticket prices down, although they recently caused a stir by raising some season tickets by 27%. You can be sure Glazer will be looking for more, although perhaps not instantly.
And while thousands of United fans say they will stay away, Glazer will be confident their places will be taken by others only too happy to buy into the worldwide brand.

Malcolm Glazer has secured a 75% share in Manchester United, enabling him to take charge of the club, the Reuters news agency has reported.
Reuters quotes a source close to the matter saying that the billionaire US sports tycoon has now purchased the additional shares he needed.

Reaching the 75% figure would enable Mr Glazer to take Manchester United private and delist its shares.

Man Utd fans have promised to continue to oppose his takeover of the club.

"We're through 75%," the source told Reuters.

Television rights

Although no formal announcement was made that Mr Glazer has gone over the 75% figure, a large block of 1.2 million shares changed hands within 90 minutes of the stock exchange opening in London.

If Mr Glazer was the buyer this would be enough to take him over the 75% mark. At that level of shareholding, as well as delisting, he would be able to transfer a large amount of debt onto the club's books.

With a 75% stake, Mr Glazer would also leave the holders of the remaining stock with next to no power.

Short of receiving copies of the company's accounts and the right to attend annual meetings, their shares will affectively be worthless, as Mr Glazer would be unlikely to pay them dividend payments.

And if Mr Glazer can get 90% of the remaining shares block that are left, he would then be able to make a compulsory purchase to buy up the final 10% slice.

Premier League chief Richard Scudamore has played down suggestions that Mr Glazer may now try to break out of a collective TV deal to start raising more cash at Man Utd.

Mr Scudamore said it would be "almost impossible" for Mr Glazer to achieve.

'Pandemonium'

Meanwhile United fans angry at the takeover have threatened to stage more protests at Saturday's FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Shareholders United vice-chairman Oliver Houston told the Observer there was "an appetite for creating pure pandemonium".

"Two people running on the pitch caused problems when Liverpool played Chelsea recently, so imagine what will happen if there are hundreds of people on the pitch in Cardiff," he said.

Demonstrations at the club's game at Southampton on Sunday were not on the scale expected, but some fans displayed banners.

There were three arrests and one black banner read "you were my life, goodbye Manchester United football club, RIP".

Anti-Glazer chants were also heard at the game, which was overshadowed by the home team's relegation from the Premiership.

Debt worry

Supporters say the club, which became a plc in 1991, will be saddled with huge debts because of the way the takeover has been financed.

Some pundits believe Mr Glazer will start to look into the Premier League's TV bargaining arrangement, which is due for renewal, in an effort to increase the club's profitability.

The clubs currently makes about Ŗ50m a year from the collective agreement, but that could increase if they were allowed to negotiate independently.

To make a change, Mr Glazer would need another 13 clubs to side with him on the issue.

Mr Scudamore told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: "The Premier League is blessed with a very conservative constitution. Fourteen clubs out of 20 need to vote to do anything.

"So it is almost impossible, and we have seen it in the past, for a small group of clubs to come along and achieve an alteration to what has been a very successful formula, both in terms of the way we do the TV deals and also the way we distribute the money."

Campaign group Shareholders United has urged supporters to stop buying club merchandise and the products of sponsors, such as Vodafone, Nike, Anheuser-Busch and Audi, if the club changes hands on Monday.

The group said its membership had increased to 30,000 from 20,000 in the last few days.

Mr Glazer's son Joel is expected to take an active role in running the club and claims his family are "avid" Manchester United fans.

He has said they intended to work with the current management, players and fans.

Perhaps. But Edward Freedman, director of merchandising at Manchester United during the 1990s, makes the point that the merchandising operation is no longer controlled by the club.

"It amazes me that no-one has picked up the fact that in the 1990s, when I was there, we owned our merchandising rights, apart from the kit on the field and the tracksuits.

"Today Nike completely owns Manchester United's merchandising rights. There isn't a scarf, there is nothing Manchester United can do on the merchandising front.

"It is all down to Nike and that is a disaster."

A disaster for the club maybe, but potentially one for American sportswear firm Nike, which is three years into a 13-year deal with United and would take the major hit in any boycott.

It is understood there is a point where United would suffer financially, but the club would not be the only losers and possibly not even the biggest losers from any merchandise boycott.

Officially Nike are saying only: "We have a great working relationship with Manchester United and look forward to continuing this in the future."

Whether or not the planned merchandise boycott ends up hurting Malcolm Glazer remains to be seen.

United shirts are sold to millions of fans around the globe - not just in the Old Trafford megastore on Saturday afternoons.

The BBC's business editor, Jeff Randall, believes supporters will eventually return to the merchandise outlets.

"My personal view, and it's a bit cynical, is that bit by bit they will drip back," he said.

Op het internet zijn al (door de boulevardpers gepromote) spelletjes te spelen waarop je hem vanuit een vliegtuigje op de middenstip van Old Trafford kunt laten landen - of kapot laten vallen. De doodsbedreigingen aan zijn adres - op spandoeken, pamfletten en wat dies meer zij - zijn ondertussen legio. Rechtszaken worden aangekondigd, oproepen gedaan om de eigen club in het hart te treffen: géén seizoenkaart meer aanschaffen, geen merchandising meer kopen, boycot aan ManU gelieerde merken zoals Nike, Pepsi, Budweiser en Vodafone. En heel de stad is bezaaid met armbanden: Not for $ale! De overname van miljardair Malcolm Glazer heeft, dat moge duidelijk zijn, kwaad bloed gezet.

Komend weekeinde moet alvast de grote klapper volgen, want dan speelt Manchester United in Cardiff tegen Arsenal de finale van de FA Cup. De fans zijn opgeroepen om massaal in het zwart of in burgerkleding naar die eindstrijd te komen. Blijft de vraag waar de fans van de Red Devils eigenlijk precies zo bang voor zijn. Verhoogde toegangsprijzen? Een uitverkoop van de spelers? Niemand die het eigenlijk weet. Want niemand die ook maar precies kan vertellen wat Malcolm Glazer precies met hun club wil. Omdat niemand de miljardair eigenlijk écht kent.

Natuurlijk, vermoedens zijn er wel. Glazer zal willen pogen om de winst van Manchester United te vergroten, door het merk ManU in Amerika en vooral Azië te gelde te maken. Hoe? Door de duels van de club live aan te bieden op mobiele telefoons in Japan, Korea en China, bijvoorbeeld. Daarnaast zou hij de tv-rechten van de club zélf willen gaan exploiteren, en niet samen met de overige clubs, zoals nu nog gebeurt. 'Voor transfers blijft dan nog een bedrag over van twintig miljoen pond (dertig miljoen euro)', aldus Glazer. Ongeveer hetzelfde als wat de club nu te besteden heeft.

Malcolm Glazer dus. Wie is deze Amerikaanse cowboy eigenlijk, die dik een jaar bezig is geweest om Manchester United te kopen? Glazer is de zoon van Joods-Litouwse immigranten. Hij werd in 1928 geboren in Rochester, New York en woont tegenwoordig in het zonovergoten Palm Beach, Florida. Hij werd in 1943 hoofd van de familie én baas van het familiebedrijf (horloges), dat hij uitbouwde tot First Allied, een holding die zich intussen bezighoudt met zaken als gezondheid, internet, onroerend goed, banken, aardgas en -olie en aandelen. Vooral dankzij hem werd een vermogen verworven van zo'n anderhalf miljard dollar. Op de Forbes-lijst van rijkste stinkerds ter wereld, prijkt Glazer op nummertje 240.

In 1995 zette Glazer zijn eerste stappen in de sport, en dat niet zonder succes. Hij kocht in dat jaar footballclub Tampa Bay Buccaneers voor een bedrag van 192 miljoen dollar, terwijl de waarde van die franchise momenteel wordt geschat op 675 miljoen, waarmee de Bucs zich de zevende rijkste footballclub in de NFL mag noemen. Maar niet alleen financieel gaat het de club onder Glazer naar den vleze: in 2003 veroverde Tampa Bay de 37ste Super Bowl ten koste van Oakland Raiders.

Nadat hij er in 2003 niét in slaagt om honkbalclub LA Dodgers over te nemen, stort Malcolm Glazer zich vervolgens op voetbal. Manchester United, de rijkste club ter wereld, is de vereniging waar hij zijn zinnen op heeft gezet, en stukje bij beetje vergroot hij z'n belang: van 16,69 procent op 25 februari 2004, via 18,3 in april en 28,11 procent in oktober, slaat hij op 13 mei van dit jaar zijn grote slag. De Ierse tycoons John Magnier en JP MacManus gaan overstag en Glazer verwerft een meerderheid. De gewenste 75 procent-plus-één laat dan nog maar even op zich wachten.

De fans zijn door het dolle heen en vrezen het ergste voor hun club. 'Ik hou nog steeds van de club, maar ik weiger om ook nog maar een penny in dit bedrijf te steken', zegt de furieuze Nick Towle, voorzitter van de fanclub die zich het felst tegen de overname van Glazer verzette, alvorens zijn seizoenkaart in de brand te steken. Volgens Towle zijn er nog wel '20.000 fans bereid om de club de rug toe te keren'.

Maar dat geldt niet alleen voor de fans. Oķk manager Sir Alex Ferguson lijkt maar weinig trek te hebben om bij het Manchester United nieuwe stijl van Glazer te gaan werken. De Schot liet zich in het verleden ook al regelmatig negatief uit over de overnamepogingen van de Amerikaan. Glazer grijpt dan ook in en biedt Ferguson volgens The Sun een blanco cheque: noem maar een bedrag om te blijven. Uiteraard met als belangrijke oogmerk: als Sir Alex blijft, dan trek ik misschien de fans ook wel over de streep. Vooralsnog is er echter geen ManU-fan te vinden die de plannen van Malcolm Glazer toejuicht of de miljardair ook maar het voordeel van de twijfel gunt. Integendeel, zoals we komende zaterdag vanuit Wales ongetwijfeld zullen gaan zien.

Roy Carroll moet weg bij Manchester United. De 27-jarige doelman, wiens contract afloopt, krijgt geen nieuwe verbintenis aangeboden. Carroll speelde sinds 2001 voor Man United.

De Noord-Ier begon zijn eerste drie seizoenen als stand in, maar was afgelopen seizoen de doelman met de meeste wedstrijden bij Man U. Toch maakte hij zelden de indruk de juiste man op de juiste plaats te zijn.

Naast Carroll heeft manager Alex Ferguson ook geen plaats meer voor Ricardo. De Spaanse doelman die in de zomer van 2002 overkwam van Real Valladolid, kwam in Manchester maar tot één Premiership-optreden.

The 34-year-old has agreed a two-year deal and will join the club on 1 July, providing he passes a medical.

United have been looking for a new goalkeeper after releasing Roy Carroll at the end of May.

Van der Sar, who has 95 international caps, moved to Fulham from Juventus for Ŗ5m in August 2001 and went on to make 153 appearances for the Cottagers.

He was linked with a move to United in January but agreed a contract extension with Fulham until summer 2006 instead.

The Dutchman is United's first new signing since the club's takeover by Malcolm Glazer and he is likely to join the squad for July's tour of the Far East.

He will become the latest in a long line of keepers to have been tried by manager Sir Alex Ferguson since the loss of Peter Schmeichel in 1999.

Mark Bosnich, Massimo Taibi, Raimond van der Gouw, Fabien Barthez and Carroll have all come and gone while Ricardo's contract expires this summer.

United's other keeper, American Tim Howard, agreed a new contract until 2009 in May.

Rude Nistelrooy has decided to stay at Manchester Soccer side for another year.

The offenseman, whose nickname is The Van for some reason (due to his poor turning circle, I think) says he is committed to the Buccaneers for another series, despite interest from Portuguse club Realmadrid.

Nistelrooy played garbage in the FA Super Bowl championship loss to the London Arsenals, failing to kick a goal on a number of occasions. But I'm so happy he is staying at the Nike Trafford Ballpark. I mean, he achieved 16 scores in the last series! That's awesome man! That's even more than Lewis Saha and David Bellion combined!

The Dutchman (pictured below, bravely blocking a free-shot) says his poor year was because Sir Ferguson played him with a sore heel. Another reason to cut Sir Ferguson. Give Sir Michael Phelan the job! Then we'll start winning some pennants!

De krant meldt dat Glazer Ferguson het ondenkbare wil laten overwegen, namelijk de terugkomst van voetbalster David Beckham naar Old Trafford. Dit zou een geweldige marketing-stunt zijn en de aandelenkoersen explosief laten stijgen.

Beckham zou dé kans voor Glazer zijn, om Manchester United ook te verkopen in de Verenigde Staten, omdat hij bekend staat als "de enige voetballer die ook beroemd is in Amerika." En ondanks dat de oud-United-ster nog een tweejarig contract heeft in Madrid, zou hij altijd al een terugkeer naar Manchester gekoesterd hebben.

3. Glazer zal de helft van de club verkopen
Aandelen van Manchester United zouden in drie tot vijf jaar weer op de markt zijn. De Amerikaanse multimiljonair is van plan de aandelen eerst in prijs zo hoog mogelijk te laten stijgen - dit met de komst van Beckham en de "baan voor het leven" van Ferguson - om vervolgens er 49 procent van te verkopen.

Chief executive David Gill has pleaded with fans to be patient over Rio Ferdinand's ongoing contract negotiations.

Sections of fans have labelled Ferdinand 'greedy' as the saga rumbles on, but Gill has defended the player's right to consider his options.

"It may be reflecting badly on Rio, but not with me it isn't," he said. "It is a big commitment he is making. Yes, it is a lot of money by any stretch of the imagination but it is still a big commitment.

"I know people would snap your hands off if you are offered that kind of money, but it does have to be right. You have to think about your worth and all that. I respect him for that and he has to get the right advice. It is easy from the outside to say it is a hell of a lot of money and that you'd sign without thinking.

"But it is a crucial time in his career and he needs to be happy with that. Would we like it cleared up? Yes we would, but I am not going to criticise a player and he won't criticise the club - we are just going through the process.

"It may look bad, but I don't think it is. It is a timing thing we will get through and we will resolve it.

"He is a professional and he is a great lad and I get on very well with him. You have to be slightly more patient in these situations and then get it done."

"He is a fantastic finisher and his performances in the reserves tell you that. Hopefully he will get even better.

Roy Keane's lawyer has denied that the Republic of Ireland midfielder missed Manchester United's tour of Asia after a row with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Newspaper reports said the 33-year-old was omitted after a bust-up at the Red Devils' training camp in Portugal.

"He remained in Manchester to continue his treatment for a hamstring injury," said Keane's adviser Michael Kennedy.

"Any disagreement he may have had with his manager is a private matter and will not be the subject of comment."

United refused to comment on the reports.

Keane was allegedly annoyed over the fact that families were allowed to travel with players for the camp.

Reports suggested he was angry he had cut short a family holiday to attend the camp - only to find out it was a relatively informal affair.

United began their tour on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Hong Kong and will travel to China for a match against Beijung Hyundai on Tuesday.

The Reds then fly to Tokyo for two more games against Kashima Antlers on Thursday and Urawa Reds next Saturday.

A Paul Scholes brace in the first half and Park Ji-sung's header in the second, handed United a comfortable victory in Beijing on Tuesday.

With just two weeks remaining until the crucial Champions League qualifier on 9 or 10 August, Sir Alex Ferguson gave his players an extended run out.

Five players completed the full 90 minutes, while another four played over an hour, in Beijing's intense humidity at the Workers' Stadium.

Despite playing at a pace slower than most pre-season friendlies - due to the stifling conditions, United managed to carve numerous chances early on.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was first to test the keeper with a rare long-range strike after a neat interchange with Park Ji-sung. The Dutchman should have got his first goal of the tour when, after 25 minutes, Rooney weighted a precision pass into the Dutchman's path.

Striking the ball across the keeper into the far corner is normally preached by any goalscoring coach. But the Dutchman, usually so clinical in front of goal, went for the top corner at the keeper's near post. His shot went high and wide.

It took until three minutes before half-time for United to make the breakthrough. Darren Fletcher's left-footed cross found Scholes' perfectly-timed run, and the 30-year-old midfielder glanced a header into the far corner.

Scholes doubled the lead two minutes later, tapping in from Ruud's mis-hit volley.

Whereas in United's previous pre-season friendlies Ferguson has made wholesale changes at half-time, this time he made just one.

Ronaldo, who only arrived in Beijing on Monday, replaced Paul Scholes and immediately set about picking holes in the home side's defence.

Within two minutes the Portuguese winger had skipped effortlessly past two defenders and floated a cross to the far post. The Korean midfielder's header should have been saved, but the goal is his first for his club and secured a 3-0 victory.

Manchester United shrugged off a minor earthquake in Tokyo but fell to the first defeat on their Far Eastern tour at the hands of Kashima Antlers.
Masashi Motoyama's spectacular volley fired the J-League leaders into an early lead.

Ronaldo spurned a second-half chance to level for United when Kleberson dropped a cross onto his head eight yards out but he failed to hit the target.

Howard had the busiest night of any United keeper on the tour and he produced two sharp saves to deny Motoyama his hat-trick.

Despite the second-half introduction of Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith and Ruud van Nistelrooy United failed to find a cutting edge in front of goal.

United finished strongly and Ji-Sung Park was guilty of an horrendous miss when he blazed over from eight yards out after being set up by van Nistelrooy's clever backheel.

Club officials have not commented on the terms of the deal. However, now the dispute has been resolved, Ferdinand is set to play in United's Champions League qualifier against Debrecen on Tuesday at Old Trafford.

Ferdinand moved to Old Trafford from Leeds United in July 2002 for Ŗ29.1m.

Manchester United heeft z'n zinnen gezet op de 25-jarige Braziliaanse verdediger Cicinho, afkomstig van São Paulo. De rechtsback zou twaalf miljoen euro moeten kosten, meldt de BBC.
Man United is overigens niet de enige gegadigde voor Cicinho, want ook AC Milan en Juventus zitten op het vinkentouw. De Mancunians, die de verdediger al hebben ingevlogen om te praten over een vierjarig contract, hebben echter de leiding in de jacht.

Bijkomend voordeel voor Cicinho, zesvoudig Braziliaans international en indrukwekkend op het toernooi om de Confederations Cup, is dat hij dankzij zijn Italiaanse grootvader in aanmerking komt voor een Europees paspoort.

Cicinho wordt in zijn vaderland getipt als de opvolger van Cafu. Indien hij kiest voor Manchester United, zou dat wel eens het einde kunnen betekenen voor Gary Neville op Old Trafford. Zijn broer Phil koos twee weken geleden al voor Everton.

De kleur rood staat Manchester City tegen. Het doet denken aan aartsrivaal Manchester United. En dus moet alles wat rood is vermeden worden. Zo ook in het wagenpark.

Bij het bestellen van de nieuwe auto's heeft de directie erop toegekeken dat er geen rode bolide komt voor een van de medewerkers van Manchester City. Het zou namelijk kunnen wijzen op een lichte voorkeur voor rivaal United.

De rivaliteit neemt daags voor de stadsderby weer ludieke vormen aan. Zo wijzen de United-fans hun rivalen met het spandoek '29 jaar' fijntjes op de prijsloze periode van City. City-fans hebben zich voorgenomen de Amerikaanse vlag mee te torsen, verwijzend naar de commotie over de Amerikaanse eigenaar van Manchester United Malcolm Glazer.

Roy Keane mist niet alleen het duel in de Champions League met Villarreal. De Ierse aanvoerder van Manchester United zal zeker zes weken aan de kant zitten.

Keane kampt met een hamstringblessure, die hij afgelopen zaterdag opliep tijdens de derby tegen Manchester City. In totaal mist de 34-jarige Keano naar verwachting zes competitieduels en drie wedstrijden in de Champions League.

Spelen zonder Keane bleek de laatste jaren een probleem voor Man United. In totaal miste de onverzettelijke middenvelder 23 duels in de laatste twee seizoenen, waarin The Mancunians liefst 31 van de 69 punten verspeelden.

Roy Keane heeft donderdagavond zijn afscheid van Manchester United aangekondigd. Na twaalf jaar vindt hij het welletjes op Old Trafford. In januari 2006 wil hij zijn nieuwe club bekendmaken. Waarschijnlijk is Celtic zijn volgende bestemming, de club waarvan de Ier als kind al supporter was.

'Er komt altijd een tijd om verder te gaan', verklaarde Keane op MUTV. 'Mijn contract loopt aan het einde van het seizoen af en ik denk niet dat de club me een nieuw zal aanbieden. Ik zou er door verrast zijn, als ze het wel zouden doen. En mochten ze zoiets van plan zijn, dan zullen ze dat toch pas aan het einde van het seizoen doen. Maar dat is te laat, omdat ik ergens in januari al iets geregeld hoop te hebben.'

Keane zegt nog twee jaar te willen voetballen. 'Komende zomer ben ik 35 en er breken een hoop aardige spelers door. Er bestaat altijd het gevaar dat je te lang blijft. En misschien zijn er al mensen die denken dat ik een jaar of twee te lang ben gebleven. Als je naar je hart luistert wil je zo lang mogelijk blijven, maar je moet ook naar je verstand en naar je lichaam luisteren.'

'Als ik 't heb over een andere club, dan hoeft dat geen Engelse club te zijn. Ik denk dat dat heel moeilijk zou zijn voor mij om mee te leven. Ik zou het niet leuk vinden om op Old Trafford terug te keren en in de uit-kleedkamer te gaan zitten.'

Man U-manager Alex Ferguson zou hem gevraagd hebben om de technische staf van The Mancunians te versterken. Maar Keane wil daar vooralsnog niet aan denken. 'Het zou een goede ervaring voor me zijn: een andere club, een ander land, een andere kleedkamer. Als ik ooit manager wil worden, dan zou het goed voor me zijn een andere omgeving te ervaren.'

De Portugees Cristiano Ronaldo is gisteravond aangehouden op verdenking van verkrachting. De speler werd gister na het duel van zijn club Manchester United tegen het Franse Lille meegenomen naar het bureau voor verdere ondervraging.
De beschuldigen dateren van 1 oktober. Manchester United speelde toen een uitwedstrijd tegen Fulham, die met 3-2 werd gewonnen. Cristiano Ronaldo overnachtte daarna in een hotel in Londen. De exacte feiten waarvan de Mancunian verdacht wordt zijn vooralsnog niet bekend.

Manchester United weigert te reageren op de beschuldigingen van haar pupil. “Op dit moment weerhouden wij ons nog van elk commentaar”, meldt woordvoerder Phil Townsend. Cristiano Ronaldo zal waarschijnlijk op borgtocht vrij komen in afwachting van het onderzoek.

The Portuguese international is being questioned about claims a woman was sexually assaulted at a central London hotel on 2 October. Manchester United said it was "not commenting at the moment".

Ronaldo, 20, attended the station and was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police's specialist Sapphire team. He is being held in custody while he is interviewed about allegations made by a woman that she was raped in the penthouse suite of a hotel the day after Manchester United played Fulham.

A man in his 30s also kept an appointment at the police station, but has not been arrested.

BBC crime correspondent Neil Bennett said normal procedure was for the police to interview the alleged victim and alleged perpetrator and send a file to the Crown Prosecution Service to decide whether anyone should be charged.
