quote:Gill Calls For Calm In Rio Storm
Chief executive David Gill has pleaded with fans to be patient over Rio Ferdinand's ongoing contract negotiations.
The Ŗ30million England defender has been abused by sections of the United support in pre-season wins over Clyde and Peterborough.
Gill said: "I understand the fans want to know what is going on. We will sit down when it has quietened down and I am sure we will sort something out."
The Reds supremo is confident that, with all parties eager for the same outcome, the matter will eventually end with Ferdinand remaining at Old Trafford.
He said: "Rio has said he wants to stay, Alex obviously wants him to stay, the owners want him to stay and so do the board. In my experience, when you have all that, then things invariably work their way through and you get a resolution.
"There is no real pressure on it. It is not as if he can leave in a year's time. He has two years to go on his present deal and we are not in a rush to sell in order to realise that capital. When we were a quoted company, there may have been a bit more pressure."
Sections of fans have labelled Ferdinand 'greedy' as the saga rumbles on, but Gill has defended the player's right to consider his options.
"It may be reflecting badly on Rio, but not with me it isn't," he said. "It is a big commitment he is making. Yes, it is a lot of money by any stretch of the imagination but it is still a big commitment.
"I know people would snap your hands off if you are offered that kind of money, but it does have to be right. You have to think about your worth and all that. I respect him for that and he has to get the right advice. It is easy from the outside to say it is a hell of a lot of money and that you'd sign without thinking.
"But it is a crucial time in his career and he needs to be happy with that. Would we like it cleared up? Yes we would, but I am not going to criticise a player and he won't criticise the club - we are just going through the process.
"It may look bad, but I don't think it is. It is a timing thing we will get through and we will resolve it.
"He is a professional and he is a great lad and I get on very well with him. You have to be slightly more patient in these situations and then get it done."

And Bayern insist United have not made an offer for the Germany captain.
Ballack, 28, whose contract expires next year, said: "I'll be playing for Bayern until 2006. We're aiming high, and I want to be a part of it."
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: "Ballack has a contract until 30 June, 2006. We won't be letting him go before then."

Smith als verdedigende middenveld.quote:Fergie: Smith Can Replace Keane
Sir Alex Ferguson admits Alan Smith is a viable option to replace Roy Keane in centre midfield.
The firebrand Yorkshireman, accustomed to leading the line upfront, has starred in the middle of the park in pre-season friendlies against Clyde and Peterborough.
And Ferguson told Sky Sports: "Alan's young and obviously it's something we're possibly looking at in terms of maybe the replacement for Roy eventually. We keep talking about it.
"You don't get Roy Keanes obviously but Alan Smith is Alan Smith and he brings a different type of character than Roy."
"We see a lot of potential for him too. He's only 24."
Fergie's admission comes after Edwin van der Sar had told ManUtd.com that Smith had revelled in his new midfield role in training.
The Dutch goalkeeper said: "Alan has impressed me. He's focusing himself on a different position and he's doing a really good job on that."
Another youngster to catch the eye pre-season has been Giuseppe Rossi.
The Italian-born striker scored with a scorching left-footed drive against Peterborough, and Sir Alex sees a great future for him.
Ferguson said: "He's a good, young player. He is only 18 and he has a great future I hope.
"He is a fantastic finisher and his performances in the reserves tell you that. Hopefully he will get even better.
"But he's a striker and it will get more difficult, because it is hard to make it in that position."

Klinkt gezelligquote:Keane lawyer plays down tour row
Roy Keane (left) and Sir Alex Ferguson
Roy Keane's lawyer has denied that the Republic of Ireland midfielder missed Manchester United's tour of Asia after a row with Sir Alex Ferguson.
Newspaper reports said the 33-year-old was omitted after a bust-up at the Red Devils' training camp in Portugal.
"He remained in Manchester to continue his treatment for a hamstring injury," said Keane's adviser Michael Kennedy.
"Any disagreement he may have had with his manager is a private matter and will not be the subject of comment."
United refused to comment on the reports.
Keane was allegedly annoyed over the fact that families were allowed to travel with players for the camp.
Reports suggested he was angry he had cut short a family holiday to attend the camp - only to find out it was a relatively informal affair.
United began their tour on Saturday with a 2-0 win over Hong Kong and will travel to China for a match against Beijung Hyundai on Tuesday.
The Reds then fly to Tokyo for two more games against Kashima Antlers on Thursday and Urawa Reds next Saturday.

Pre-Season Friendly
Beijing Hyundai 0
Manchester United 3
The Workers' Stadium, Beijing
A Paul Scholes brace in the first half and Park Ji-sung's header in the second, handed United a comfortable victory in Beijing on Tuesday.
With just two weeks remaining until the crucial Champions League qualifier on 9 or 10 August, Sir Alex Ferguson gave his players an extended run out.
Five players completed the full 90 minutes, while another four played over an hour, in Beijing's intense humidity at the Workers' Stadium.
Despite playing at a pace slower than most pre-season friendlies - due to the stifling conditions, United managed to carve numerous chances early on.
Ruud van Nistelrooy was first to test the keeper with a rare long-range strike after a neat interchange with Park Ji-sung. The Dutchman should have got his first goal of the tour when, after 25 minutes, Rooney weighted a precision pass into the Dutchman's path.
Striking the ball across the keeper into the far corner is normally preached by any goalscoring coach. But the Dutchman, usually so clinical in front of goal, went for the top corner at the keeper's near post. His shot went high and wide.
It took until three minutes before half-time for United to make the breakthrough. Darren Fletcher's left-footed cross found Scholes' perfectly-timed run, and the 30-year-old midfielder glanced a header into the far corner.
Scholes doubled the lead two minutes later, tapping in from Ruud's mis-hit volley.
Whereas in United's previous pre-season friendlies Ferguson has made wholesale changes at half-time, this time he made just one.
Ronaldo, who only arrived in Beijing on Monday, replaced Paul Scholes and immediately set about picking holes in the home side's defence.
Within two minutes the Portuguese winger had skipped effortlessly past two defenders and floated a cross to the far post. The Korean midfielder's header should have been saved, but the goal is his first for his club and secured a 3-0 victory.
Starting line-up: Van der Sar; G. Neville, Ferdinand, Silvestre, O'Shea; Rooney, Fletcher, Smith, Scholes, Park; Van Nistelrooy.
Substitutions: Ronaldo for Scholes (45), Giggs for Park (60), P. Neville for G. Neville (61), Dong for van Nistelrooy and Richardson for O'Shea (69), Steele for van der Sar (76).

quote:Kashima Antlers 2-1 Man Utd
Manchester United shrugged off a minor earthquake in Tokyo but fell to the first defeat on their Far Eastern tour at the hands of Kashima Antlers.
Masashi Motoyama's spectacular volley fired the J-League leaders into an early lead.
United responded immediately with Ryan Giggs tapping in Cristiano Ronaldo's cross, only for Motoyama to volley Antlers back in front before half time.
Ji-Sung Park missed United's best second-half chance of an equaliser.
After keeping four clean sheets on the tour to date, it took Antlers just five minutes to breach United's defence.
Motoyama controlled a crossfield pass with his first touch and with his second lashed a superb volley over keeer Tim Howard into the far corner.
United's response was immediate, with Louis Saha threading a pass to Ronaldo who darted into the area before rolling the ball across the face of goal for Giggs to tap in.
A minor earth tremor midway through the first half was hardly noticed by the players as the action swung from end to end.
United fell behind again before half-time to another spectacular goal from Motoyama.
Mitsuo Ogassawara's canny flicked pass gave Motoyama the space to fire in a powerful angled volley from eight yards.
Ronaldo spurned a second-half chance to level for United when Kleberson dropped a cross onto his head eight yards out but he failed to hit the target.
Howard had the busiest night of any United keeper on the tour and he produced two sharp saves to deny Motoyama his hat-trick.
Despite the second-half introduction of Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith and Ruud van Nistelrooy United failed to find a cutting edge in front of goal.
United finished strongly and Ji-Sung Park was guilty of an horrendous miss when he blazed over from eight yards out after being set up by van Nistelrooy's clever backheel.

Man Utd v Hajduk Split/Debrecen
Tues 9 Aug, 2000, BBC1
Manchester United get their season under way with a Champions League qualifier against Hajduk Split or Debrecen of Hungary.
With entry to the lucrative group stage the prize for the winners, the 1999 European champions will be looking to build a sizeable lead before the return leg in a fortnight's time.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side look likely to play Debrecen who hold a 3-0 lead over Hadjuk.
The clubs have never met before, but a potential trip to Hungary will bring back memories of one of Sir Alex Ferguson's worst European nights when his side lost 1-0 to Zalaegerszeg at the same stage in 2002 before crusing to victory in the second leg.

4/8/2005 12:31
quote:Royal Antwerp 1-6 Man Utd
United won 6-1 against the Belgian side as defender Rio Ferdinand was again booed by the Old Trafford club's fans. "Both Wayne and Cristiano took knocks to the ankle, but they will be okay," said United manager Ferguson. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a hat-trick with Paul Scholes, Ronaldo and Darren Fletcher also scoring.
Roy didn't flag at any stage and I thought he coped with it very well. Ryan Giggs, Louis Saha and Park Ji-Sung did not figure but Ferguson expects the pair to be back for the Champions League qualifier against Debrecen on 9 August.
Ferguson added: "We left Ryan at home because he had a bit of a virus and Louis got a bit of a knee knock, but we hope they will be fine.
"Park Ji-Sung will definitely be fit for next week after the blow he took to the head."
Midfielder Roy Keane returned to the United first-team fold following reports of a bust-up with his manager.
"Roy got through the full 90 minutes, which was the most important thing," said Ferguson.
"He didn't flag at any stage and I thought he coped with it very well."
Van Nistelrooy's goals also pleased Ferguson as the Dutchman has been worryingly short of form recently.
He had already seen a couple of opportunities go begging before he tapped home Ronaldo's low cross to start the rout.
Scholes and Ronaldo netted either side of Van Nistelrooy's next effort, a thunderous penalty after he had been brought down by Antwerp keeper Yvan Willockx.
The Dutchman completed his hat-trick with a 20-yard free-kick that flicked off a home defender and into the top corner.
Some brilliant footwork from Rooney left Fletcher with a close-range tap-in to wrap things up.

quote:Ferdinand signs new Man Utd deal
Rio Ferdinand has signed a four-year deal which will keep him at Manchester United until June 2009. The 26-year-old England defender has ended speculation about his future following protracted contract talks. Ferdinand was booed by some fans during pre-season as he failed to sign a deal reportedly worth Ŗ100,000 per week.
Fans were angry at the player's stance after United stood by him during his eight-month ban from football for missing a drugs test. Ferdinand insisted he had always wanted to stay at Old Trafford, and said he wanted to put the matter behind him. "I said all along that I wanted to stay at the club and this has now put that issue to bed," he told United's website.
"I'm looking forward to the start of what I expect will be a great season. "It's good to get this matter out of the way to allow me to concentrate on playing for United." United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he was delighted Ferdinand's contract saga was at an end. "It's great news that Rio has agreed a contract. The reality of negotiations today is that they take time," the Scot told United's website. "But these have always been conducted in a good spirit and we are very pleased with the outcome. We can now look forward to the future."
Club officials have not commented on the terms of the deal. However, now the dispute has been resolved, Ferdinand is set to play in United's Champions League qualifier against Debrecen on Tuesday at Old Trafford.
Ferdinand moved to Old Trafford from Leeds United in July 2002 for Ŗ29.1m.
