Datzelde beweerde men toen de Russen door een bestaande buis bij Shoemy (bij Toretsk) tevoorschijn kwamen, en een paar weken later idem toen de Russen door een zelf gegraven tunnel bij Niu York tevoorschijn kwamen. Gewoon wat extra troepen ten oosten van Niu York zetten en we snijden ze in het zuiden met een tang af.
En wat zeiden de Oekraners toen de Russen in juli een puist kregen bij Prohres. Juist ja, dat sluiten wij even in.

Kherson terugtrekking werd vooral uitgevoerd door de VDV, onder leiding van een capabele generaal (Popov?). Deze terugtrekking gebeurt onder Lapin, of de KGB, of de vriend van Putin.

Ja dat snap ik, maar uiteindelijk zijn de wat meer sobere analyses die je leest allemaal niet zo heel erg onder de indruk van dit soort vermeende doelen afgezien van het feit dat het een mooie morele opsteker is. De houdbaarheid is twijfelachtig. Ingegraven stellingen ver van de eigen luchtafweer zijn enorm kwetsbaar voor glide bombs, dus het beste wat men kan doen is een kleine bufferzone net over de eigen grens aanhouden waarschijnlijk. Poetin politiek verzwakken of Rusland op de kosten jagen lijken gezien de politieke situatie en het verloop van de oorlog weinig realistische doelen. De Russische propagandamachine doet prima z'n werk en de gemiddelde Rus krijgt het daadwerkelijke verloop van zaken bijna niet mee. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk leidt het eerder tot meer dan tot minder steun voor de oorlog onder de bevolking op deze manier.
Oekrane is er al goed in geweest om de kosten hoog te maken, er is een enorme hoeveelheid Russisch materiaal vernietigd, van voertuigen tot boten. Alleen hebben de Russen dit wel kunnen opvangen, door oud materieel op te knappen en door nieuw materiaal te maken en in het buitenland te kopen.
Eigenlijk heeft Poetin maar twee grote gevaren. Het eerste is het grote tekort aan (geschoolde) arbeiders, zowel in de fabrieken als op het front. Het tweede is de olieprijs, als die te ver zakt, kan het wel eens onbetaalbaar worden om het front en de oorlogseconomie overeind te houden.
Overigens is het grootste gevaar voor Oekrane dat de buitenlandse steun opdroogt. En dan gaat het vooral om VS, omdat zij dominant zijn qua militaire steun.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces have received Bulgarian RTB-7LDMA thermobaric ammunition for RPG-7 grenade launchers.
Soldiers of the Khoryv Battalion of the “Bureviy” National Guard Brigade demonstrated the ammunition on their weapons.
The Khoryv Battalion holds positions on the front line in the Serebryansky Forest in the Luhansk region.
There have been no reports of their transfer to Ukraine by Bulgaria or use by the Defense Forces.
The 40/90-mm RTB-7LDMA thermobaric grenades are designed to be used with Soviet 40-mm RPG-7 grenade launchers and their copies.

The munition was developed and manufactured by the Bulgarian defense company Arsenal.
The RTB-7LDMA is designed to destroy enemy manpower and equipment located primarily in field-type shelters, ready-made fortifications, and stone or brick structures.
Thermobaric ammunition uses the effect of a volumetric explosion of an aerosol cloud of flammable substance. Due to the cloud’s large size, the energy of the shock wave retains its damaging effect over a greater distance.
The explosion occurs in two stages: first, a small charge is detonated, which distributes the flammable cloud over the area, and then a second charge is detonated with a short delay, which causes the aerosol cloud to detonate.
The RTB-7LDMA, weighing 3.1 kg, is equipped with an SM-71 sustainer motor and an AF72 fuse with a super quick and graze (anti-ricochet) function, regardless of the impact angle.
The manufacturer claims that the maximum aiming range is 2000 meters, and the maximum range of direct fire is 250 meters.

The Defense Procurement Agency has delivered 154 Great Wall Wingle 5 pickup trucks to the military.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine said that the SUVs were received as a result of procurement in the Prozorro system.
It is noted that the vehicles can carry up to five people and cargo weighing up to one ton.
“They are also capable of towing a trailer weighing 850 kilograms. The body can accommodate up to 4 personnel and additional equipment for weapons,” the Defense Ministry shared.
The tender to purchase pickup trucks had 11 participants. The supplier won with a price of UAH 996 thousand per vehicle, including VAT.
The total value of the contracts is UAH 153 million, of which approximately UAH 40 million is duties, taxes, and fees that will be returned to the country’s budget.
The pickup trucks have all-wheel drive and a 143 horsepower two-liter diesel engine that meets the Euro 4 standard and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.

The Come Back Alive Foundation, together with Ukrnafta, has delivered a batch of machine guns to the soldiers of the 82nd Air Assault Brigade.
The Foundation reported that 40 FN Minimi machine guns were purchased for the paratroopers of this unit.
Their cost is UAH 25,267,620, and this is not the only contribution of Ukrnafta to arm the 82nd Air Assault Brigade, the Foundation shared.
“Together with Ukrnafta, we have transferred 40 FN Minimi machine guns to the 82nd separate air assault brigade, which is currently participating in an offensive in the Kursk region,” the Come Back Alive Foundation team noted.

Dus voor elke meter die Rusland hen zal terug dringen zal dit hopelijk tegen zulke groot mogelijke kosten gebeuren. En de deadline van Putin van 1 oktober zal sowieso niet gehaald worden. Dus ook dat zal weer een grote nederlaag betekenen voor hem.
Ook ligt het deel onder de rivier voor het oprapen, waardoor ze het bezette gebied bijna kunnen verdubbelen.
Oekrane zal met de inval in Kursk voor het einde van deze week meer grond innemen dan Rusland in 2023 en 2024 (tot nu toe) bij elkaar heeft ingenomen.
Ook is de vraag wat de kosten voor Rusland zullen zijn om Povresk in te kunnen nemen. Want er zitten in elk geval nog twee verdedigingslinies tussen het front en de stad in. En ook de stad zelf zal als verdedigingslinie gebruikt worden natuurlijk.
Het heeft Rusland een week gekost om 2-2.5 kilometer dichter bij de stad te komen. En dat was zonder zware verdedigingslinies.

Militarnyi recently reported that the soldiers of the 80th Separate Galician Air Assault Brigade captured the previous T-90M Proryv in the Kursk region.
This happened during one of the raid operations when the soldiers had to clear enemy positions.

During this operation, the military spotted a T-90M Proryv tank, which one of the Russian soldiers tried to start but failed.
Militarnyi previously reported that the Russian military lost its 100th state-of-the-art T-90M tank. According to publicly available information, the analyst could count 100 destroyed and damaged T-90M tanks.

The list also includes vehicles that were captured by the Ukrainian Defense Forces and abandoned by Russian crews on the battlefield without severe damage.
Publicly available photos and video materials were used to calculate the losses of the aggressor country.

The Czech Ministry of Defense is preparing to launch a new initiative to supply Ukraine with artillery rounds in 2025.
The tentatively titled Initiative 2025 project will involve five Czech arms companies and suppliers from various non-NATO and EU countries.
In July, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsk stated that the Czech Republic is seeking funds to purchase ammunition for the Ukrainian Defense Forces as part of its initiative.
Russian revenues should become an important funding source for the initiative, as the estimated value of frozen Russian sovereign assets in the EU is almost 211 billion. The EU, G7 countries, and Australia have frozen a total of approximately 260 billion in securities and cash.
As part of this year’s initiative, the Czech Republic is to provide about 50,000 rounds of ammunition in August, and 80,000 to 100,000 per month from September to the end of the year. In total, Ukraine will receive a total of 500,000 rounds by the end of the year.
Lipavsk said that 18 countries have already joined the initiative, of which 15 have fulfilled their obligations and contributed.

The invaders are building a parallel structure near the Kerch Bridge in temporarily occupied Crimea.
Analysts from the Crimean Wind Telegram group published photos of the facility.
“Construction of a parallel structure, which also resembles a bridge, is underway near the Kerch Bridge,” the analysts say.
In early August, photos appeared showing builders driving piles for this structure.
Also, satellite images clearly show the boom barriers on both sides of the bridge structure.

The new structure is likely to increase the bridge’s protection against potential Ukrainian attacks.
The Crimean bridge is of strategic importance and is a symbol of Russia’s imposition of its will in occupied Crimea.
It is also of tactical value, as part of the logistics passes through it.
Additional barriers
In May, the Russian invaders added more barriers around the Kerch Bridge to protect it from Ukrainian naval drones.

Presumably, according to the invaders, this could protect the structure from Ukrainian naval drones, which have a powerful warhead for blowing up structures.
Even earlier, the occupiers installed protective floating barriers around the Kerch Bridge. The first barrier consisted of special anti-sabotage booby traps. Such structures are designed to protect against surface and underwater drones.

However, such barrel barriers with cables are easily torn down by storms. Tied plastic barrels from this barrier were recently washed up on the Kerch embankment.

According to reports, a 24-year-old Russian FPV pilot with the callsign “Silver” made contact with the Legion “Freedom of Russia” in the winter of 2024. His decision to cooperate with Ukraine was driven by systemic crimes committed by the battalion’s command, including extrajudicial executions, beatings, and extortion.
As part of his cooperation with Ukrainian forces, “Silver” provided valuable intelligence on the location, strength, and intentions of enemy forces on a specific front. In May 2024, he executed a plan involving the throwing of grenades into the ventilation shaft of the battalion’s underground headquarters, where the battalion commander and other officers were sleeping. The explosion resulted in serious injuries to several officers.
Following the operation, “Silver” used a pre-planned escape route to flee and crossed into Ukrainian-controlled territory. He is currently undergoing basic training as a recruit in the Legion “Freedom of Russia.”
The “I Want to Live” project, which facilitates the voluntary surrender of Russian soldiers to Ukrainian forces, reports that there have been over 300 successful surrender operations in nearly two years.

Military personnel and law enforcement officers are encouraged to turn off Telegram's "People Nearby" feature, remove photos, and change nicknames that indicate their affiliation with the military or government. They are also advised to conceal personal data, remove geotags from social media, and avoid linking photos to their locations.
Employees in the energy and nuclear sectors are advised to hide their professional affiliations on social media to prevent identification by Ukrainian intelligence.
The Russian government announced a so-called "counter-terrorist operation" on Aug. 10 in Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod oblasts.
Kyiv’s ongoing operation aims to establish a "buffer zone" on Russian territory, prevent cross-border strikes, and divert Russian reinforcements from Ukraine's east, according to Ukrainian officials.

Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported the incident via his Telegram channel. According to the regional administration’s press service, the children’s caf was directly hit, leading to the injuries of three children, with one in critical condition.
The air raid alert in the region lasted for ten minutes, from 15:47 to 15:57. The military had warned of a potential threat from ballistic weaponry.

A 14-year-old boy died in the hospital
Russian occupiers struck a children's cafe in Malokaterynivka, Zaporizhzhia Oblast - four children and an 18-year-old girl were injured, with a 14-year-old boy in serious condition, as reported by the regional authorities and relevant agencies.
Later it became known that the boy had died and two more children were hospitalized.
The head of the regional administration, Ivan Fedorov, reported that the Russians hit directly into a children's cafe in Malokaterynivka. At that time (6:15 PM Kyiv time), three injured children were known about.
Later, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) reported that due to the Russian shelling, children aged 11, 14, 15 and 17, as well as an 18-year-old girl, were injured. They were hospitalized in one of the Zaporizhzhia hospitals, and the 15-year-old boy was reportedly delivered to the hospital unconscious. Medics were performing resuscitation measures. The condition of the other victims was described by the SESU as stable.

The missiles targeted 5,197 civilian sites and 1,988 military targets.

“The enemy maintains a high intensity of artillery shelling at the positions of our troops in eastern and southern Ukraine. Currently, it is using up to 45,000 rounds of ammunition daily,” said Syrskyi.
At the same time, according to the data provided by Syrskyi, the ratio of 3:1 consumption of artillery ammunition in July–August 2024 is significantly better than the situation in January–May 2024: 7:1, or about 70,000 to 10,000 daily.

Syrsky recalled that in October–December 2023, Russian troops were spending over 30,000 artillery rounds per day, while the Armed Forces of Ukraine were spending up to 10,000. In August–September 2023 the Russians were firing about 20,000 rounds per day, compared to approximately 13,000 rounds spent daily by Ukrainian defenders.

The IRIS-T air defense system boasts very high target interception efficiency by itself, and when complemented by the skill and experience of Ukrainian operators, an episode when this efficiency exceeds 100% becomes possible
German-made IRIS-T surface-to-air missile systems in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to prove their high efficiency in intercepting cruise missiles which are commonly regarded as difficult targets. In some unique cases, the efficiency of the complex can exceed 100%, thanks to the skill of the team operating the system and luck.
This is exactly what happened to a unit under the Air Command "West" of the Ukrainian Air Force. This Command's press service published a really interesting story of the career of a battery commander, Lieutenant Colonel Oleksandr, who met the outbreak of the russian full-scale invasion operating a Soviet Buk M1 missile system, and later on switched to another type of air defense system.

Although the Air Command "West" did not specify which one exactly, it mentions multiple hints, like the training Oleksandr had undergone in Germany or the attached photo of the battery commander himself next to the equipment he operates with markings representing all the aerial threats his team has eliminated.
It looks exactly like the command vehicle from the IRIS-T system, although it could be part of either a medium-range SLM or a short-range SLS system. The hatch that looks like a door is actually a ventilation outlet — see the reference photo below. There are also other minor details, such as technical markings or fasteners.

The most interesting of them, though, is the doubled cruise missile marking among the intercepted threats.
"We spend one missile per one target. That is, the efficiency is one hundred percent. We even managed to destroy six enemy missiles with five of ours. The russian missile exploded after being hit by our missile and destroyed another cruise missile with its debris," Oleksandr said. Overall, he added, a total of 45 aerial targets have already been neutralized by this battery in six months of operation.
In contrast with this statement, only 39 marks were painted on this command vehicle. The reason is, the photo was made much earlier: for the first time a photo of this vehicle appears among the posts by Air Command "West" on July 3rd, it's around this time when it was taken alongside with the interview. By the time it was published, the statistics were updated. Logically, within this 1.5-month lag, Oleksandr's unit shot down six more russian aerial weapons.
Aside from these achievements, the very fact that the IRIS-T SLM is apparently used exclusively against cruise missiles is an interesting aspect, as it speaks of a clear hierarchy among various types of air defense systems in Ukraine's arsenal, with defined roles based on the type of target each one is supposed to engage. It also indicates that the "lower-tier" anti-aircraft systems and weapons handed to mobile fire groups are effective enough for the assigned tasks.
The post mentions that throughout his military career, Oleksandr has destroyed 75 airborne threats. Accordingly, prior to his switching over to IRIS-T, the Buk M1 under his command intercepted exactly 30 hostile airborne units. Among those listed are two Su-34 tactical bombers and four helicopters, including a Mi-28 attack helicopter, all of them downed during the defense of Kyiv in early 2022. In addition, he is credited for ten cruise missiles and attack drones shot down when he was guarding the skies of Odesa Region.

Gazprom in 2023: financile verliezen bereiken recordhoogte

In mei publiceerde Gazprom zijn jaarlijkse financile rapport voor 2023, waaruit een verlies van 629 miljard roebel (ongeveer $ 7 miljard tegen de huidige wisselkoers) bleek.
Dit is de eerste keer dat het bedrijf sinds 1999 een negatief resultaat rapporteert.
De grootste daling werd waargenomen in het gassegment, waar de inkomsten daalden van 7,72 biljoen roebel naar 4,41 biljoen roebel op jaarbasis (equivalent aan een daling van $ 87 miljard naar $ 50 miljard). De olie- en energiesegmenten zagen echter bescheiden stijgingen.
Het rapport merkte ook een daling op van de buitenlandse verkoop van 7,3 biljoen naar 2,9 biljoen roebel. Daarnaast rapporteerde Gazprom een daling van de gasproductie in 2023 met 13% op jaarbasis tot 359 bcm, wat een historisch dieptepunt is.
Om al deze redenen heeft de raad van bestuur van het bedrijf besloten om in 2023 geen dividenden uit te keren aan investeerders.
Dividenden werden consequent uitgekeerd van 1998 tot en met 2022, hoewel besloten werd om de betaling voor 2021 achterwege te laten en in 2023 de betalingen te beperken tot alleen de eerste helft van 2022. Deze stap had een impact op de aandelenkoers van Gazprom op de Moskouse effectenbeurs; de prijs daalde van 150 roebel per aandeel begin mei tot bijna 115 roebel per aandeel op 13 juni, een daling van bijna 25% en het laagste niveau sinds 2017.

Het ongekende financile verlies van Gazprom is het resultaat van twee belangrijke factoren: het aanzienlijke verlies van marktaandeel in Europa als gevolg van politiek gemotiveerde beslissingen van Rusland om de gasleveringen in die richting te beperken (terwijl het nog steeds onmogelijk was om ze naar andere markten te herleiden) en een daling van de grondstoffenprijzen op de wereldmarkten na het bereiken van recordhoogtes in 2022. In 2023 bedroeg de Russische gasexport naar Europa via pijpleidingen iets meer dan 26 bcm, vergeleken met bijna 150 bcm in 2021.
De meest drastische daling was te zien in 2022, toen de gasverkoop met bijna 90 bcm daalde in vergelijking met het voorgaande jaar, maar de negatieve financile impact van deze vermindering werd verzacht door de hoge koolwaterstofprijzen ( ' Gazprom in 2022: productie en export omlaag, winst omhoog ' ).
Het financile resultaat van Gazprom in 2024 zal naar verwachting verbeteren als gevolg van een opleving van de internationale verkoop.

Dus zolang die russische overtuiging blijft bestaan, gaan ze dit om x jaren herhalen. vooral ook doordat een beleid gebasseerd op conservativisme en nationalisme van meerdere jaren altijd heeft geleidt tot culturele erosie en economische stagnatie. Wanneer landen in de omgeving een democratisch (klassiek) liberaal beleid voeren, ontstaat de drang naar interventies om het consertvatieve wereldbeeld instand te houden / te brengen heel erg snel.
De voorbeelden zijn eindeloos. China, Japan (2e wereld oorlog),Sovjet Unie, Nazi Duitsland, oosterijk_Hongarije, Napoleon etc.
Het Duitse imperialisme is uiteindelijk samen met Pruissen ten grave gedragen. Het Europese deel van Rusland en de daar levende, oorlogshitsende bevolking vertolken een vergelijkbare rol en hebben een reservoir van tientallen miljoenen slaven (niet het volk, maar de rol die zij vervullen) in de deelrepublieken die ze voor hun imperialistische karretje kunnen spannen.quote:

En de MRLS systeem is artillerie maar dan met raketten in plaats van shells. Al kan hij dus ook ballistische raketten afvuren (ATACMS)
En die pontonbruggen en de voertuigen die die kunnen leggen zijn belangrijk om uit te schakelen. Hierdoor blijkft het zuiden van de rivier voor het oprapen en kan Rusland moeilijk de soldaten en materieel daar terug trekken of versterken.
Het gaat om een gebied van meer dan 600km2 die dus voor het oprapen ligt. En door de rivier zal deze veel gemakkelijker te verdedigen zijn.
Sowieso heeft Oekrane geen toestemming om ATACMS op Russisch grondgebied te gebruiken volgens mij.

The schism between the Ukrainian and Russian-linked churches was triggered by Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the war between Kyiv and Moscow-backed separatists in the east.
The Istanbul-based head of the Eastern Orthodox Church granted a breakaway wing, called the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), autocephaly – religious independence – from the Moscow Patriarchate in 2019.

A military court in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don found Korchinsky guilty of undergoing training and preparing to commit a terrorist attack, as well as illegal possession of weapons.

Russia has introduced new drone technology in response to Ukraine’s operation in the Kursk region, utilizing drones guided by fiber optics—immune to radio jamming. This marks the first known use of such weapons in combat.
Ukraine’s advance into the Kursk region was facilitated by an electronic warfare blitz, which effectively disabled Russia’s reconnaissance drones and neutralized their FPV drones. The success of Ukraine’s operation in Kursk required extensive preparation, including the identification of all active frequencies and the deployment of sufficient jamming equipment to temporarily neutralize all drones in the area.
The Russian army has been working on innovative technology to overcome the issue of jamming with wire guidance, where the drone deploys a fiber-optic cable as it moves. This method, akin to the wire-guided missiles like the TOW system, allows the transmission of high-resolution video signals without relying on radio frequencies. As a result, fiber-optic drones can effectively counter assaults that depend on electronic warfare to protect armored vehicles.

Combat footage started to appear, suggesting the first operational use of this type of weapon.
On August 12, videos circulated on social media purportedly showing fiber-optic FPV drone attacks on Ukrainian BTR-4 reconnaissance vehicles in Giri. While this cannot be independently verified, the videos exhibit an unusual clarity and absence of interference.
“These screenshots of the Ukrainian BTRs from the point of view of the Russian FPVs at Giri are unprecedented in terms of resolution and clarity,” said Roy, a Twitter/X analyst specializing in Russian weapon systems.
On August 18, the Russian military Telegram channel Siberian Army released another attack video, providing more details. They claim the new fiber-optic drone is named “Prince Vandal of Novgorod,” developed by the Ushkuynik Scientific and Production Center in Novgorod. “The attack video shows higher resolution than usual and no interference, similar to the Russian attack at Giri,” Roy noted.
Meanwhile, Skywalker Technology, a company specializing in drone technology, has begun offering fiber-optic drone controllers on the open market. Their latest product is a fiber-optic guidance system designed to replace traditional radio control.
As with other FPV components, often sourced from Far Eastern suppliers, this new technology is likely to be easily available to purchase and deploy to the battlefield in a matter of weeks.
Ukraine officially announced carrying out an operation in the Kursk region on August 12. As of August 20, the Armed Forces control more than 1,260 square kilometers of territory and 93 settlements in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, according to Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Earlier, on August 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy introduced the bill to the Ukrainian Parliament regarding the ratification of the Rome Statute.
The Rome Statute aims to ensure criminal prosecution for the gravest international crimes, including genocide, aggression, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

A new law has come into force in Hungary which threatens to push thousands of Ukrainian refugees on to the streets or back to Ukraine.
The regulation restricts state support for Ukrainians to those who come from parts of Ukraine directly affected by the fighting caused by Russia's invasion.
Thirteen regions in Ukraine are on the list, which will be updated monthly by the Hungarian government.
It is not known how many of the 31,000 Ukrainians taking shelter in Hungary will be affected by the new law.
Human rights groups say the most vulnerable are those from the Roma ethnic minority from the westernmost Transcarpathian region, who are still living in shelters which will now close.
Their situation is complicated by the fact that many are dual Ukrainian-Hungarian citizens, who have been refused help elsewhere in the European Union on the grounds they are Hungarian citizens.
The UN refugee agency said the law change will mean an estimated 2,000-3,000 refugees will "lose access to subsidised accommodation".
"Many face significant barriers in securing alternative housing due to lack of financial means but also reluctance of owners to rent," the UNHCR said.
"For many, the change will result in job losses and impact school enrolment, jeopardizing the positive integration achievements obtained so far."

A Russian general dismantled a council charged with overseeing security in Russia's Kursk Oblast in the spring, weakening border defenses before Ukraine's unprecedented incursion, the Wall Street Journal reported on Aug. 21.
Citing an official in the Russian security services, the outlet said Colonel General Alexander Lapin claimed the Kremlin's military could effectively defend the border on its own.
As a result, he dissolved an interagency council consisting of military officers and local and regional security officials which would have been tasked with helping Moscow form a coherent response to an incursion by Ukraine.
The report stresses that Russia would likely still have struggled to respond to the events which have since unfolded in Kursk Oblast, but it added to the confusion and disorganization on show as Moscow has tried to oust Ukraine's army from Russian soil.

Since 2015, Russia has designated numerous foreign charities, think tanks, and civil society organisations as "undesirable." This legislation specifically targets entities perceived as antagonistic to President Vladimir Putin's regime. Organisations marked as "undesirable" are prohibited from operating within Russia, and Russian banks and companies are barred from engaging with them, effectively isolating these groups from the Russian public.

"The supply of ammunition to Poland was blocked – more or less directly – by the South African government due to fears that it could be sent to Ukraine. However, South Africa is closer to Russia, with which, among other things, it is a member of the BRICS alliance," the newspaper explained.
Poland signed a contract with Rheinmetall for 155-mm artillery shells a few months after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It is now August 2024, but Poland has received none, Rzeczpospolita notes.
The Armament Policy Department, a division of the Polish Ministry of Defense, told the outlet that the contract was terminated on July 20, 2023 due to problems related to its implementation by a subcontractor.
Rheinmetall did not respond to the newspaper's questions.
However, it turned out that ammunition for Poland was to be produced by the South African company Rheinmetall Denel Munition. And this is exactly the "problematic" subcontractor that the representatives of the ministry are referring to.

In mid-August, it was reported that the private Polish company ZSP Niewiadw sp. z o. o. plans to build a factory for the production of 155-mm artillery shells with a capacity of 180,000 shells per year. The estimated cost of the project is 1 billion zlotys (over $250 million).
On February 12, 2024, Germany's Rheinmetall began construction of a new Werk Niedersachsen ammunition plant in Germany. According to plans, it will start working in a year, and in three years it will reach the planned capacity of 200,000 artillery shells.
On July 24, Rheinmetall announced that it had received a contract for the construction of an ammunition plant in Ukraine.

Russian propaganda is spinning an unusual theory to explain the recent Ukrainian advances in the Kursk Oblast.
The latest claim suggests that Ukrainian soldiers have received special uniforms from Western allies that render them invisible, both day and night, as part of an alleged international conspiracy.
According to reports from the Military Portal, this theory is being pushed as a way to rationalize Ukraine's success in the region.
But this explanation is far from credible, as the large amount of equipment that Ukrainian forces have moved into Kursk Oblast would be difficult to conceal, even if the soldiers themselves were invisible.
The Reality of Ukrainian Forces in Kursk
Retired military intelligence officer Lt. Col. Maciej Korowaj wrote on X:
"At night, sounds travel for many kilometers, which is why the sound of Ukrainian engines on the night before the operation from August 5 to 6, 2024 was clearly audible in the Sumy district."
Even if the Ukrainians had used special camouflage for their soldiers and equipment, the presence of Ukrainian forces near and across the Russian border would be hard to miss.

These materials are designed to bend light around the object, effectively masking it from visible, ultraviolet, infrared, and shortwave light. Such technology also reduces the thermal signature of soldiers, making it harder for enemy night vision and thermal imaging to detect them.
In late 2023, Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, introduced a real-world example of this technology via Telegram.
He showcased an "invisibility cloak" designed to help Ukrainian soldiers evade detection by Russian thermal imaging, especially from drones. Weighing just 2.5 kg, this cloak offers protection against various weather conditions and is made from non-flammable material.
Poland's Contributions
Similar innovations are being developed in Poland, where a camouflage net was tested by WP Tech journalist Norbert Garbarek.
This net, part of the INVISI-TEC IR system, effectively stops heat radiation, blending and reflecting the temperature generated by a soldier back to its source.
This technology makes it nearly impossible for the heat to "escape" and reveal the soldier's position.

According to him, on the night of 21 August 2024, the Russian occupiers attacked Ukraine with two Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles from the Voronezh region, an Kh-59/Kh-69 guided missile from the airspace of the Kursk region, and 69 Shahed-type attack UAVs (launch areas: Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Yeysk, Kursk).
A total of 72 air targets were detected and tracked by the Air Force's radio-technical units.
The enemy's air attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units of the Air Force and mobile fire groups of the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
As a result of the air combat, 51 air targets were shot down: one Kh-59/Kh-69 guided missile and 50 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs in Khmelnytsky, Poltava, Cherkasy, Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kherson, Donetsk, Kirovohrad, Sumy and Chernihiv regions.
Another 16 enemy UAVs were lost in the area - presumably, they fell under the influence of electronic countermeasures. The information is being clarified.
In addition, an enemy attack drone was spotted crossing the state border with the Republic of Belarus in Chernihiv region, and another Russian UAV returned to its ‘homeland’ in Belgorod region, Oleshchuk added.
As of 11:15 a.m., one hostile UAV was in the airspace in Cherkasy region. Combat operations are ongoing.
As Ukrinform reported earlier, an enemy Shahed was shot down by air defence forces over Kirovohrad region during an air alert.

The Russian opposition publication Agenstvo reported that Russian forces have captured more territory in Ukraine within a week than at any time since the end of May, with most gains in the Pokrovsk sector.
Evacuations from Pokrovsk have been ramped up, and since Aug. 20, it has become mandatory for families with children. Around 59,000 residents remain in the city, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.
Serhii Dobryak, the head of the Pokrovsk City Military Administration, stated that residents have about a week or two to evacuate. He urged civilians to leave while it is still possible to do so calmly.

Dat de Hongaarse minderheid in Oekrane (tenminste in de grensregio met Hongarije) Hongaarse paspoorten hebben gekregen was een goede deal voor beide partijen. Zij kunnen nu in de gehele EU aan het werk/en wonen. En Orban heeft zich verzekerd van meer dan 100.000 extra potentiele stemmen die hem ook nog eens flink dankbaar zijn.

The news of the bridge’s damage became known on August 19, 2024 from a statement by Russian propagandist Vladimir Romanov, who published this information on his Telegram channel, Romanov Light.

Background on the Nord Stream explosions
Overnight on Sept. 25, 2022, three out of four threads of Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 were destroyed by explosions in the Baltic Sea's neutral waters. Although the pipelines were not operational at the time, they were filled with technical gas.

The Department of Justice has begun a broad criminal investigation into Americans who have worked with Russia’s state television networks, signaling an aggressive effort to combat the Kremlin’s influence operations leading up to the presidential election in November, according to American officials briefed on the inquiry.
This month, F.B.I. agents searched the homes of two prominent figures with connections to Russian state media: Scott Ritter, a former United Nations weapons inspector and critic of American foreign policy, and Dimitri K. Simes, an adviser to former President Donald J. Trump’s first presidential campaign in 2016. Prosecutors have not announced charges against either of the men.
More searches are expected soon, some of the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss investigations. Criminal charges are also possible, they said.
The investigation comes in the wake of the Biden administration’s official intelligence findings that Russia’s state news organizations, including the global news channel RT, are working with its intelligence agencies to sway elections around the world.

The government’s investigation is politically fraught, reprising the furiously partisan debate over Russia’s influence in the 2016 presidential campaign. By targeting Americans working with news organizations, even if they are state-run, the inquiry could also bump up against the First Amendment’s protection of rights to free speech.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence warned on July 29 that Russia was exploiting “witting and unwitting Americans” to create and spread narratives that were favorable to the government of President Vladimir V. Putin.
“These personalities,” the office said in a statement, “post content on social media, write for various websites with overt and covert ties to the Russian government, and conduct other media efforts.”
The government investigation is not targeting ordinary Americans who watch Russian state media or post about it online, but rather is focused on individuals intentionally spreading disinformation from Moscow, some of the officials said.

Mr. Ritter, who has worked as a contributing writer for RT, said in a telephone interview that an hourslong search of his house in Delmar, N.Y., on Aug. 7 seemed to be an effort to intimidate him for expressing his political views about the United States, Russia and the war in Ukraine.
F.B.I. agents and state police seized mobile phones, computers and hard drives but did not arrest him. “It’s an absolute frontal assault on the Constitution of the United States,” he said.
The extent of the crackdown remains unclear, and the Justice Department and other officials across Washington declined to discuss it when asked. In recent months, however, the Biden administration has grown increasingly alarmed by Russia’s influence operations targeting the United States — and seems willing to act more forcefully.
Last month, the Justice Department moved to shut down a furtive campaign aimed at sowing discord in the United States and other countries and spreading Russian propaganda about the war in Ukraine.
Working with the governments of Canada and the Netherlands, as well as with officials at Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, the department took down 968 inauthentic accounts. The Russians created and operated the accounts using commercially available artificial intelligence tools.
In affidavits released with the announcement, officials explicitly linked the effort to Russia’s Federal Security Service and RT.
Russia’s state television networks broadcast in English and other foreign languages, acting as a global megaphone for the views of Mr. Putin, who routinely depicts the United States and its allies as a hegemonic power bent on world domination.
Mr. Ritter, who traveled to Russia and to occupied parts of Ukraine in January, said the warrant to search his home made reference to an investigation that involved the Foreign Agents Registration Act, the federal law that requires Americans to disclose lobbying and political activities on behalf of foreign governments.
Mr. Simes, a Soviet-born American citizen, is being investigated for, among other crimes, violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, the legal foundation for imposing economic sanctions, some of the officials said.
On Aug. 13, agents descended on a wooded 132-acre estate near the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia that Mr. Simes and his wife had bought in July 2021, according to Rappahannock News, a local newspaper that first reported the search.

Mr. Simes, 76, has been a fixture of American foreign policy debates in Washington since he emigrated from the Soviet Union as a young man in 1973.
He served as an informal adviser on Soviet affairs to President Richard M. Nixon, who, in 1994, appointed him to a think tank he founded, now known as the Center for the National Interest.
In 2016, Mr. Simes hosted Mr. Trump, then a presidential candidate, for a speech in which he called for improved relations with Mr. Putin’s government. He also introduced Mr. Trump to the Russian ambassador at the time.
Mr. Simes also passed on to Mr. Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner what he believed to be incriminating information that the Russians knew about former President Bill Clinton, the husband of Mr. Trump’s Democratic opponent at the time, according to the final report of the investigation by Robert S. Mueller III into Russia’s interference in the 2016 campaign.
Although Mr. Simes was interviewed by Mr. Mueller’s investigators and cited repeatedly in the report in 2019, he was not accused of wrongdoing. He stepped down from the Center for the National Interest in 2022, and, according to an interview on Friday on Sputnik, another of Russia’s television networks, he has been in Russia since October 2022.
Since 2018, he has hosted a weekly talk show, “The Big Game,” on one of Russia’s state television broadcasters, Channel One.
In the interview on Sputnik, Mr. Simes said that he did not know the reason for the search, but speculated that it was an attempt to stifle anyone who would improve relations between Russia and the United States. He said his bank accounts had been frozen, except one where his Social Security checks were deposited, and expressed concern that agents had seized paintings in his home from Soviet and Russian avant-garde artists.
“It clearly is an attempt to intimidate, not only somebody from Russia, but just anyone who goes against official policies and particularly against the deep state,” Mr. Simes, who could not immediately be reached for comment, said during the interview.
Since 2017, the Department of Justice has required RT to register as a foreign agent, not as a news organization, reflecting the government’s control over its operations. There is no clear legal precedent that dictates whether journalists working for a news organization would fall under the requirements of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
Mr. Ritter, in the interview, said he had been a contributing writer for RT, among other news organizations, since 2020. He said he was paid per article — a sum he described as an industry norm of $150 to $300 — but faced no more editorial control than what editors typically did in assigning and editing work.
When the war in Ukraine broke out in 2022, he became an outspoken defender of Russia’s invasion, often reflecting Russia’s effort to blame the United States and NATO for the conflict.
“The only reason why I can believe that they’re doing this,” he said, “is if there’s some national security interest where they believe somehow I am actively conspiring with Russia against the interests of the United States, that I have become more than just a propagandist, that I become something more like, you know, a weapon of disinformation.”

Issues were reported with at least 20 services monitored by Downdetector.su. The service "sboy.rf," typically used to track outages, was also down.
"This typically happens when they turn on the so-called 'anti-messenger mode'," said Mikhail Klimarev, director of the Internet Protection Society, to Agentsvo.Novosti. He noted similar issues occurred in Dagestan during riots, in Yakutia, and Bashkiria during protests. "I have a strong feeling something significant happened, but now on a federal level," Klimarev added.
Users from the Central Asian countries neighbouring Russia also reported problems with Telegram. Klimarev explained that network transit to these countries goes through Russia. He sees no other explanation besides actions taken by Russian authorities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday hailed “flourishing” trade ties with China during a meeting with a top Chinese official in Moscow as the two countries bolster their partnership in the face of mounting frictions with the West.
Speaking to Chinese Premier Li Qiang, Putin said Russia-China “large-scale joint plans and projects” in economic and humanitarian areas would “continue for many years,” according to a Kremlin readout.
Li, China’s No. 2 official under leader Xi Jinping, had traveled to Moscow for a longstanding annual meeting with Russia’s prime minister, which focused on economic and practical cooperation as the Kremlin continues to look to Beijing for economic partnership as its war with Ukraine grinds on.
In his remarks to Putin, the Chinese premier hailed efforts by the Russian leader and Xi to “inject strong momentum” into “deepening bilateral relations and cooperation,” according to Chinese state media.
Li’s four-day trip, which will include a stop in Russian ally Belarus, is the first visit to Russia by a high-level Chinese official since the Kremlin’s war with Ukraine took on a new dimension following a surprise, ongoing military incursion by Ukrainian forces into the Russian border region of Kursk two weeks ago.

An official readout from the meeting released by China’s Foreign Ministry did not mention the war in Ukraine.
Speaking to Li, Mishustin said Russia and China were “in a difficult external situation” as Western countries impose “illegitimate sanctions under far-fetched pretexts” and seek to “contain the economic and technological potential of Russia and China.”
“That is why it is important to concentrate efforts on protecting our common interests, building a multipolar world order and strengthening coordination on international platforms,” he said, according to Russian state media.
Record trade
Beijing has faced mounting scrutiny and pressure from the West to curtail the export of dual-use goods such as aerospace, manufacturing and technology equipment to Russia, which Western leaders and Kyiv have alleged are propping up the Russian war effort.
Chinese officials have sought to present the country as a neutral, aspiring peace broker in the war, but have had limited high-level contact with Kyiv while continuing to deepen relations with Moscow across trade, diplomacy and security.
China last month hosted a top Ukrainian official for the first time since Russia’s invasion of the country nearly two and half years ago.
Last week, in response to a media inquiry on the situation in Kursk, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry called on “all parties” not to expand the battlefield, escalate fighting and “fuel the flame,” saying China would continue to work for a “political settlement of the crisis.”
Wednesday’s meeting between Li and Mishustin is part of annual talks held since 1996, typically focused on economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation and seen as a means to implement broader policy direction set by Xi and Putin.
Following Wednesday’s talks, the two sides signed a host of cooperation documents in areas including science and technology, chemical industry, maritime search and rescue, and cross-border cargo transport, according to Chinese state media.
Trade between China and Russia hit record highs last year, surpassing a target of $240 billion ahead of schedule. Russia has grown hugely reliant on China’s market, goods and investment since it was slapped with broad international sanctions following its Ukraine invasion.
Bilateral trade increased by more than a quarter year-on-year in 2023 from 2022, but has only grown about 1.6% between January and July this year over the same period last year, according to China’s customs data.
Li is expected to end his four-day trip in Belarus, where he will meet Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko for an “in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and cooperation in various fields,” China’s Foreign Ministry said Monday.
