Het klinkt mij meer in de ogen alsof Giuliani een juridische tactiekwijziging doet. In plaats van ontkennen dat de betaling gedaan is zoals het standpunt eerst was, betoogde hij direct dat er geen campagnegeld bij betrokken was (want dan is het waarschijnlijk niet strafbaar).quote:
Trump en Giuliani moeten zijn optreden bij Hannity van tevoren overlegd hebben. Je gaat daar niet blanco naartoe en dingen roepen die haaks staan op wat Trump tot dan toe had geroepen. Ik heb niet zo'n hoge dunk van Giuliani, maar ook zeker niet zo laag dat hij zomaar zonder enige kennis van zaken wat zou gaan roepen op prime time.
Daarbij ontstaan nu twee problemen: dat Trump dit alles eerder ontkende en dat hij de betaling op had moeten geven (zie tweets van Seth). Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat Giuliani expres deze risico's neemt, tenzij hij reden heeft om te geloven dat dit beter is dan het alternatief.
Dat laatste zal ongetwijfeld het geval zijn. Maar dan is het wel vreemd dat Trump aangeeft dat Giuliani nog niet van alles op de hoogte zou zijn en dat hij zich nog moet inlezen. Ik denk dat ze Cohen in bescherming willen nemen om te voorkomen dat die van kant wisselt. Anders was Cohen zijn licentie kwijtgeraakt (want betalen zonder dat je cliënt het weet) en in de problemen gekomen met die campagne financieringsregels. Het eerdere verhaal was bedoeld om Cohen de schuld op zich te laten nemen, maar dat heeft denk ik iets te goed gewerkt. En aangezien Cohen al jaren voor Trump de vuile klusjes oppakt heeft Trump nu liever dat hij (weer) betrapt wordt op een leugen dan dat de druk op Cohen te groot wordt.quote:

Voormalige ministers/presidenten worden alleen ingeschakeld uit opdracht van de regering zelf. Bijv. een Carter, Kissinger of een Bill Clinton die een diplomatiek bezoek brengt.
John Kerry heeft geen enkel mandaat om dit te doen. Daarbij is Iran aangemerkt als vijand van de VS. In tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld Rusland.

Akkoord met Taiwan is verdere vervreemding van China. Het nut ervoor is er niet. Handelsoorlog wint niemand wat mee. NK benaderde Trump, niet andersom. NK deed dit al met alle andere zittende presidenten sinds de jaren 60 en raad eens waarom die niet ingingen op onderhandelingen zonder voorwaarden vooraf met een stalinistische despoot. TTP is weer een goed voorbeeld van de absolute kortzichtigheid van Trump.quote:

One of the people who spoke to AP said the questioning focused entirely on two officials from Trump’s campaign who have been indicted by Mueller: Trump’s former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and Manafort’s longtime deputy, Rick Gates. Gates agreed to plead guilty to federal conspiracy and false-statement charges in February and began cooperating with investigators.
This person said Barrack was interviewed “months ago” and was asked a few questions about Gates’ work on Trump’s inaugural committee, which Barrack chaired, and but there were no questions about the money raised by that committee.
A second person with knowledge of the Barrack interview said the questioning was broader and did include financial matters about the campaign, the transition and Trump’s inauguration in January 2017.
Barrack’s spokeswoman, Lisa Baker, declined comment.
Barrack has rare access and insight into Trump going back decades, since their days developing real estate. Barrack played an integral role in the 2016 campaign as a top fundraiser at a time when many other Republicans were shunning the upstart candidate. Barrack later directed Trump’s inauguration.

It was Mr. Trump, of course, who pardoned Mr. Arpaio last year almost immediately after he was found guilty of criminal contempt for ignoring a federal judge’s order to halt his office’s systematic racial profiling patrols in Maricopa County, in and around Phoenix. That pardon was a milestone in Mr. Trump’s ongoing assault on the norms and traditions of legality. Mr. Arpaio had expressed no contrition nor even applied for a pardon, let alone been reviewed for one by the Justice Department — the usual process by which presidential pardons have been granted.

Once, the question of what Mr. Pence really stands for was a nuanced one. Now, not so much.
