The subject being debated in Washington is whether or not deposit-taking U.S. banks should be permitted to trade in physical commodities like oil, minerals, and agricultural products. At issue is how regulators can effectively assess the safety of citizens’ bank deposits in the incredibly complex and volatile world of commodity trading. Such a ruling to take deposit banks out of commodities would eliminate players like JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs from the commodity trading business. In fact, the 10 biggest banks on Wall Street earned about $6 billion in commodity trading revenue last year, proving that American banks are more than just sideline players in the commodity markets.
Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley were both historically permitted to trade in commodities because they were investment banks, but during the American financial meltdown of 2008, they became bank holding companies which had retail banking subsidiaries. At the time, the U.S. Federal Reserve gave them a five-year grace period to exit physical commodity trading, and that grace period expires in September 2013. With $7.7 billion in commodity holdings in their March 31 financial statement, it certainly does not appear that Goldman Sachs has been exiting the commodity business approaching the September deadline. To be clear, most of the invested capital is in energy and minerals, but agriculture still holds a portion of this portfolio.

Significant risks to the nation’s financial system and to taxpayers are the potential consequences of continuing to allow the country’s largest financial institutions to own commodities units that store and ship vast quantities of metals, oil and the other basic building blocks of the economy, several witnesses warned a Senate panel on Tuesday.
The ability of those bank subsidiaries to gather nonpublic information on commodities stores and shipping also could give the banks an unfair advantage in the markets and cost consumers billions of dollars, the witnesses said.
The Senate Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection subcommittee convened the hearing to explore whether financial companies should control power plants, warehouses and oil refineries.

Five months earlier, Masters had been given a spreadsheet predicting that this line of business would generate profits of $1.5 billion to $2 billion by 2018.
Francis Dunleavy, the Houston-based executive in charge, replied in an e-mail that he would handle the matter, but added that “it may not be pretty.”
On Tuesday, JPMorgan Chase agreed to a record $410 million settlement of accusations by government regulators of manipulating electricity prices in California and the Midwest.
quote:'Taking Responsibility': German Banking Giant Quits Food Speculation
The DZ Bank decision highlights the deep differences among German financial institutions when it comes to the controversial practice of speculating on foodstuffs. Commerzbank and several Landesbanken (state-owned savings banks) had previously announced their intention to back out of food commodities speculation. But neither Deutsche Bank nor Allianz has followed them. Both say that it has not been proven that speculation on foodstuffs results in hunger and shortages.
Organizations such as Foodwatch disagree, pointing to studies showing that speculation leads to price bubbles. For DZ Bank, the risk was simply too great. The bank quietly announced in January that it was suspending such trading indefinitely, but few took notice. In its letter to Foodwatch, board member Lille was much clearer. He said the bank welcomes the fact that the effects of speculation on food prices are being intensively studied.
The letter says that DZ Bank will allow securities based on agricultural commodities to expire in 2013 and has ceased purchasing agricultural derivatives from other banks. The same holds true for funds managed by Union Investment.
Hille also made clear in the letter that his bank supports the creation of stricter financial market regulations. DZ Bank would like to see "controls on transaction volumes, particularly the introduction of effective position limits for exchanges and central clearing platforms." In other words, DZ Bank would like to limit the degree to which hedge funds and other speculators participate in so-called over-the-counter, or off-exchange, trading. Such limits existed until the beginning of the 2000s, but were then eliminated as deregulation progressed. Since then, the share of speculators on agricultural commodities markets has risen from 30 percent to 80 percent.

Reconciling Gandhi With Ambedkar
The historian Ramachandra Guha of the London School of Economics details a complicated yet complementary relationship between two of India’s dynamic founding fathers.
According to Professor Guha, while both Mr. Gandhi and Mr. Ambedkar fought against the caste system — a form of human taxonomy Professor Guha deemed “the most sophisticated, subtle, and diabolical form of social exclusion and discrimination invented by human beings” — their approaches were vastly different. Mr. Gandhi, an upper-caste member of the elite, challenged the caste system from above, in its highest echelons, as Mr. Ambedkar, the 14th child of a Dalit sepoy in the Indian Army, challenged it from below. And while Mr. Gandhi’s views on caste evolved slowly over the years, he remained deeply spiritual and sought social change within Hinduism. Mr. Ambedkar, on the other hand, favored using the state as an instrument for establishing forward-thinking social policies. Though he was born a Hindu, he often swore he wouldn’t die one, and, true to his word, he converted to Buddhism along with 200,000 of his followers weeks before his death in 1956.
Professor Guha said that Mr. Ambedkar’s selection as an architect of the Constitution was truly ahead of its time: “that a person who, under traditional Hindu law was not allowed into someone’s home, was now writing the Constitution, was as radical a step as Barack Obama becoming president of the United States 60 years later.”

Dr. Ambedkar has evaluated that the endogamy (absence of intermarriage) is the only one that can be called the essence of caste and only characteristic that is peculiar to caste.
Kastenstelsel
• Brahmanen, de priesterlijke en geleerde klasse;
• Kshatriya's, de strijders en de heersers;
• Vaishya's, de landbouwers en de handelaars;
A revivalist for Buddhism in India, Ambedkar inspired the Modernist Buddhist Movement in Maharashtra which is spreading all across India is also called Dalit Buddhist movement.

Mensen zien overal patronen in.

The open Society and it's enemies".

quote:Freedom from Fear speech by Aung Sang Suu Kyi, 1990
It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.
Most Burmese are familiar with the four a-gati, the four kinds of corruption. Chanda-gati, corruption induced by desire, is deviation from the right path in pursuit of bribes or for the sake of those one loves. Dosa-gati is taking the wrong path to spite those against whom one bears ill will, and moga-gati is aberration due to ignorance. But perhaps the worst of the four is bhaya-gati, for not only does bhaya, fear, stifle and slowly destroy all sense of right and wrong, it so often lies at the root of the other three kinds of corruption.
Just as chanda-gati, when not the result of sheer avarice, can be caused by fear of want or fear of losing the goodwill of those one loves, so fear of being surpassed, humiliated or injured in some way can provide the impetus for ill will. And it would be difficult to dispel ignorance unless there is freedom to pursue the truth unfettered by fear. With so close a relationship between fear and corruption it is little wonder that in any society where fear is rife corruption in all forms becomes deeply entrenched.
Public dissatisfaction with economic hardships has been seen as the chief cause of the movement for democracy in Burma, sparked off by the student demonstrations 1988. It is true that years of incoherent policies, inept official measures, burgeoning inflation and falling real income had turned the country into an economic shambles. But it was more than the difficulties of eking out a barely acceptable standard of living that had eroded the patience of a traditionally good-natured, quiescent people - it was also the humiliation of a way of life disfigured by corruption and fear.

Slavery and the Making of America is a four-part series documenting the history of American slavery from its beginnings in the British colonies to its end in the Southern states and the years of post-Civil War Reconstruction. Drawing on a wealth of recent scholarship, it looks at slavery as an integral part of a developing nation, challenging the long held notion that slavery was exclusively a Southern enterprise. At the same time, by focusing on the remarkable stories of individual slaves, it offers new perspectives on the slave experience and testifies to the active role that Africans and African Americans took in surviving their bondage and shaping their own lives.

Ameriquest was one of the United States' largest sub-prime mortgage lender until it was shut down in September 2007. Many of these stated income loans were the catalyst to the ultimate failure of Ameriquest itself, and a key factor in the 2007 subprime mortgage financial crisis.
In February 2005, reporters Michael Hudson (reporter) and Scott Reckard broke a story in the Los Angeles Times about “boiler room” sales tactics at Ameriquest. Their investigation found evidence that the lender had in various questionable practices, including “deceiving borrowers about the terms of their loans, forging documents, falsifying appraisals and fabricating borrowers' income to qualify them for loans they couldn't afford.”
Subprime lenders made $587 billion in new mortgages in 2004, up from $390 billion in 2003, according to National Mortgage News. Ameriquest's share of that is estimated at over $50 billion.

Of Venus Project.

quote:Kabir was a 15th century mystic poet of north India who defied the boundaries between Hindu and Muslim. He had a Muslim name and upbringing, but his poetry repeatedly invokes the widely revered Hindu name for God – Ram. Who is Kabir’s Ram? This film journeys through song and poem into the politics of religion, and finds myriad answers on both sides of the hostile border between India and Pakistan.
quote:Ram
Rama, one of the most widely worshipped Hindu deities, the embodiment of chivalry and virtue. Although there are three Ramas mentioned in Indian tradition--Parashurama, Balarama, and Ramachandra--the name is specifically associated with Ramachandra, the seventh incarnation (avatar) of Vishnu. His story is told briefly in the Mahabharata ("Great Epic of the Bharata Dynasty") and at great length in the Ramayana ("Rama's Journey").
quote:In the book Between Debt and the Devil Adair Turner challenges the belief that we need credit growth to fuel economic growth, and that rising debt is okay as long as inflation remains low.
In fact, most credit is not needed for economic growth--but it drives real estate booms and busts and leads to financial crisis and depression.
Turner explains why public policy needs to manage the growth and allocation of credit creation, and why debt needs to be taxed as a form of economic pollution. Banks need far more capital, real estate lending must be restricted, and we need to tackle inequality and mitigate the relentless rise of real estate prices.
Turner also debunks the big myth about fiat money--the erroneous notion that printing money will lead to harmful inflation. To escape the mess created by past policy errors, we sometimes need to monetize government debt and finance fiscal deficits with central-bank money.
Between Debt and the Devil shows why we need to reject the assumptions that private credit is essential to growth and fiat money is inevitably dangerous. Each has its advantages, and each creates risks that public policy must consciously balance.
