The deal buys out Hernandez's two remaining years of arbitration plus three years of free agency at an average annual salary of $15.6MM. FanGraphs says Felix's performance was worth exactly double that in 2009, and has been worth at least that every year since 2007. It's hard not to love this deal for the Mariners, and it sure isn't bad for a 23-year-old pitcher either.

He had no negotiating leverage then, but is guaranteed to increase his salary by more than twelvefold even if he loses his case because he is eligible for arbitration as a so-called "Super 2" -- a player in the top 17 percent of service time between two and three seasons.

Lincecum's case could be most similar to Howard, who won a $10 million award in his first time in arbitration in 2008. Howard won the NL MVP in 2006 when he led the league with 58 home runs and followed that with 47 homers in 2007. The Phillies offered $7 million, while Howard won with his $10 million request.

The contract is $16 million for two years. The New York Mets are believed to have offered $15 million for two years, and they might have been willing to go a little higher to seal the deal. News of the the agreement was first reported by Newsday.

Pineiro went 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA for the St. Louis Cardinals last season. He walked just 27 batters in 214 innings and posted a 60.5 percent groundball rate due to a newfound sinker.

The Angels hope Pineiro will help fill a hole created by the departure of John Lackey, who left the AL West champions for a five-year, $82.5 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. Pineiro joins a rotation that includes Jered Weaver, Joe Saunders, Scott Kazmir and Ervin Santana.

In 158 games with the Astros last season, Tejada hit .313 with 14 home runs and 86 RBIs. Tejada, 35, is a six-time All-Star and has hit .289 with 285 home runs and 1,185 RBIs in his career.

Tejada became a free agent after the Astros declined to offer him arbitration last month.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the deal is pending a physical, which will take place in the next couple of days.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—The Oakland Athletics have added another veteran arm to their young rotation, agreeing to terms with free-agent righty Ben Sheets on a $10 million, one-year contract.

The 31-year-old Sheets has been plagued by injuries. The four-time NL All-Star didn’t pitch in the majors last season while recovering from elbow surgery but last week held a pitching session for several scouts in Louisiana.

Sheets spent his first eight major league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 86-83 with a 3.72 ERA.

Oakland, which recently re-signed Justin Duchscherer, still had a spot to fill in the rotation. The A’s were to formally introduce Sheets at a news conference later Tuesday.

Nathan may get a second opinion Dr. James Andrews, the surgeon who operated on his elbow last October to remove bone chips.

Nathan hurt his ulnar collateral ligament. Injuries to that ligament have led to season-ending Tommy John surgery in other pitchers.

Nathan flew back to Minneapolis Sunday after feeling soreness in the elbow in Saturday’s game against the Red Sox.

Nathan was 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA with a career-high 47 saves last year.

The 35-year-old right-hander signed a $47 million contract two years ago that guarantees him $11.25 million both this season and next. The Twins have a $12.5 million option for 2012, with a $2 million buyout.

Nathan has set his sights on returning at the start of the 2011 season.

Span returned to the plate and struck out on the next pitch. The Twins originally said Span would leave the game, but his mother was sitting in a different seat by the bottom of the first inning and he went to play center field.

Span flied out in the second inning, then left in the bottom of the third, telling a team official he wasn’t mentally into the game. Span and his mother spent time together after he departed.

The AL co-leader in triples last season was born and raised in Tampa. Span regularly volunteers to make the long trip from the Twins’ spring training home in Fort Myers when Minnesota visits the Yankees so he can see his family.

Ben wel bang dat de Wild Card misschien naar de AL Central gaat. Indians en Royals zijn zo slecht dat de Twins en White Sox daar veel Wins kunnen pakken.
