NEW YORK (AP) -- As a top prospect for the Oakland Athletics, outfielder Grant Desme might've gotten the call every minor leaguer wants this spring.
Instead, he believed he had another, higher calling.
Desme announced Friday that he was leaving baseball to enter the priesthood, walking away after a breakout season in which he became MVP of the Arizona Fall League.

The free agent shortstop played in Baltimore from 2004-07, before being traded to the Houston Astros in December 2007 for five players.
He is now tabbed for third base with the release of Melvin Mora. Cesar Izturis is expected to stay at shortstop.
In 158 games with the Astros last season, Tejada hit .313 with 14 home runs and 86 RBIs. Tejada, 35, is a six-time All-Star and has hit .289 with 285 home runs and 1,185 RBIs in his career.
Tejada became a free agent after the Astros declined to offer him arbitration last month.
According to The Baltimore Sun, the deal is pending a physical, which will take place in the next couple of days.

quote:OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—The Oakland Athletics have added another veteran arm to their young rotation, agreeing to terms with free-agent righty Ben Sheets on a $10 million, one-year contract.
The 31-year-old Sheets has been plagued by injuries. The four-time NL All-Star didn’t pitch in the majors last season while recovering from elbow surgery but last week held a pitching session for several scouts in Louisiana.
Sheets spent his first eight major league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 86-83 with a 3.72 ERA.
Oakland, which recently re-signed Justin Duchscherer, still had a spot to fill in the rotation. The A’s were to formally introduce Sheets at a news conference later Tuesday.

Nady will get a $3.3 million base salary from the Cubs, with performance bonuses that could bring his deal to $5.35 million, a source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
quote:SAN DIEGO -- Free-agent right-hander Jon Garland and the San Diego Padres have agreed to a $5.3 million, one-year contract, people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.
The three people spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the agreement had not been announced.
Garland was 11-13 with a 4.01 ERA last year with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Southern California native was with the Chicago White Sox when they won the 2005 World Series.
Garland will make $4.7 million this season, with a mutual option for $6.75 million in 2011. If the Padres decline, he gets a $600,000 buyout. If Garland rejects it, the buyout is $300,000.

By Tim Dierkes [January 27 at 2:39pm CST]
The Yankees reached an agreement with outfielder Randy Winn on a one-year deal, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. SI's Jon Heyman tweets that the deal is worth $2MM. The Winn signing definitively closes the door on Johnny Damon, tweets Sherman.
Winn, 35, slipped to .262/.318/.353 in 597 plate appearances for the Giants last year (including a brutal 125 PAs against lefties). His corner outfield defense still rates well; that was probably the draw for Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

By Tim Dierkes [February 1 at 3:05pm CST]
3:05pm: WCCO TV's Mark Rosen reports that Mauer and the Twins reached a preliminary agreement on a 10-year extension. Such a contract would take him through the 2020 season, at which point he'd be 37.
10:32am: Joe Mauer may soon sign a contract extension with the Twins, believes Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Two Christensen sources take the good vibes even further, suggesting the number of years and guaranteed money is already agreed upon. Christensen's take on a Mauer extension: "It's a matter of when, not if."
If Mauer is locked up, Victor Martinez will jump to the top of the projected free agent catcher class for the 2010-11 offseason.

According to Putz, the Mets told him not to discuss the injury with reporters, saying:
“I knew that I wasn’t right. I wasn’t healthy. The toughest part was having to face the media and tell them that you feel fine, even though you know there’s something wrong and they don’t want you telling them that you’re banged up.”

The million-dollar prize is believed to be the largest ever offered for this type of contest - a skill-based challenge, rather than a random drawing. 2K Sports isn't putting up the money believing its game is so tough that no one can meet the challenge. It fully expects someone to pitch a perfect game - retiring all 27 batters without a single one reaching base by any means - and cash in during the contest period from March 2 (the game's date of release) and May 2.
Essentially, the studio is devoting $1 million of its marketing budget to the claim that its pitching simulation is the most authentic and enjoyable.

Lincecum, who was arbitration-eligible for the first time as a Super Two player, filed for $13MM. The Giants countered with $8MM.
Lincecum will make $8MM this year and $13MM next year. He'll also receive a $2MM signing bonus spread over the course of two seasons.
The Giants offered a three-year $37MM deal in advance of Friday's expected hearing, but Lincecum and agent Rick Thurman rejected it. The club had offered Lincecum a two-year $21MM deal before, only to see his representatives counter with $25MM for the same period.

Thomas did not play in 2009, and had a .240/.349/.374 line in a 2008 season split between Oakland and Toronto.
With 1,311 games at designated hitter, and just 971 at first base, the debate will begin as to whether a primary DH belongs in the Hall of Fame. From this view, it will be hard to keep a hitter as dominant as Thomas out of the Hall.

General Manager Bill Smith says the plan is to shut Nathan down for two weeks, eliminate the soreness and build up the strength in his elbow before making any decisions about surgery.
Nathan may get a second opinion Dr. James Andrews, the surgeon who operated on his elbow last October to remove bone chips.
Nathan hurt his ulnar collateral ligament. Injuries to that ligament have led to season-ending Tommy John surgery in other pitchers.
Nathan flew back to Minneapolis Sunday after feeling soreness in the elbow in Saturday’s game against the Red Sox.
Nathan was 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA with a career-high 47 saves last year.

quote:The Nationals have optioned 2009 first overall pick Stephen Strasburg to Double-A Harrisburg according to a team press release. He performed as expected in Spring Training, striking out 12 and allowing just two runs in nine innings pitched.
Strasburg would have to remain in the minors for approximately two weeks to have his free agency pushed back one year, and about two months to push his arbitration years back. His salaries are already set for the next three years by the Major League contract he signed out of the draft, so in 2013 the Nats would not be able to offer him less than 80% of the $3MM he will earn in 2012, even if he is still in his pre-arbitration years.
ESPN's Keith Law has also mentioned that the Nationals could be helping out their minor league affiliates, as a Strasburg start would surely drive up attendance.
Een big blow voor de Twins.....quote:FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP)—Minnesota Twins closer Joe Nathan will miss the 2010 season because of a right elbow injury that will require surgery.
Nathan, who leads the major leagues with 246 saves since 2004, made the decision after playing catch with Twins pitching coach Rick Anderson for 10 minutes on Sunday.
“It didn’t go like we hoped,” Nathan said. “We knew it was a long shot, but I think this will clear my head. There definitely was no gray area. It was definitely on the dark side. We know now that we’re going to need to go in and have some surgery done and get this thing taken care of.”
Nathan hopes to have Tommy John surgery within two weeks to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He was injured on March 6 during a 20-pitch outing in a spring training game against the Boston Red Sox.
The 35-year-old right-hander signed a $47 million contract two years ago that guarantees him $11.25 million both this season and next. The Twins have a $12.5 million option for 2012, with a $2 million buyout.
Nathan has set his sights on returning at the start of the 2011 season.
