Miguel Tejada will return to Baltimore after agreeing to a one-year deal with the Orioles, The Baltimore Sun and The Associated Press have reported, citing unnamed team sources.

The free agent shortstop played in Baltimore from 2004-07, before being traded to the Houston Astros in December 2007 for five players.

He is now tabbed for third base with the release of Melvin Mora. Cesar Izturis is expected to stay at shortstop.

In 158 games with the Astros last season, Tejada hit .313 with 14 home runs and 86 RBIs. Tejada, 35, is a six-time All-Star and has hit .289 with 285 home runs and 1,185 RBIs in his career.

Tejada became a free agent after the Astros declined to offer him arbitration last month.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the deal is pending a physical, which will take place in the next couple of days.

The 31-year-old Sheets has been plagued by injuries. The four-time NL All-Star didn’t pitch in the majors last season while recovering from elbow surgery but last week held a pitching session for several scouts in Louisiana.

Sheets spent his first eight major league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, going 86-83 with a 3.72 ERA.

Garland will make $4.7 million this season, with a mutual option for $6.75 million in 2011. If the Padres decline, he gets a $600,000 buyout. If Garland rejects it, the buyout is $300,000.

The Yankees reached an agreement with outfielder Randy Winn on a one-year deal, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. SI's Jon Heyman tweets that the deal is worth $2MM. The Winn signing definitively closes the door on Johnny Damon, tweets Sherman.

Winn, 35, slipped to .262/.318/.353 in 597 plate appearances for the Giants last year (including a brutal 125 PAs against lefties). His corner outfield defense still rates well; that was probably the draw for Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

10:32am: Joe Mauer may soon sign a contract extension with the Twins, believes Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Two Christensen sources take the good vibes even further, suggesting the number of years and guaranteed money is already agreed upon. Christensen's take on a Mauer extension: "It's a matter of when, not if."

If Mauer is locked up, Victor Martinez will jump to the top of the projected free agent catcher class for the 2010-11 offseason.

Thomas did not play in 2009, and had a .240/.349/.374 line in a 2008 season split between Oakland and Toronto.

With 1,311 games at designated hitter, and just 971 at first base, the debate will begin as to whether a primary DH belongs in the Hall of Fame. From this view, it will be hard to keep a hitter as dominant as Thomas out of the Hall.
