In de tijd woonde ze in de wijk Wesselerbrink. Ze vroeg zich af waarom ze er zo weinig Turkse vrouwen op straat zag, terwijl de straat in Turkije de ontmoetingsplek bij uitstek is. De openbare ruimte in Nederland is niet ingericht voor ontmoeting, concludeert zij in haar onderzoek.

Turkse vrouwen gaan hier alleen groepsgewijs naar buiten en op de rustige momenten, omdat ze zich anders onveilig voelen. Ze gaan in Enschede samen naar de weekmarkt en in het weekend met hun familie naar het park of de rand van de stad. Om er lang te verblijven, ontbreken faciliteiten als banken, picknickplaatsen en barbecuemogelijkheden voor grotere families, constateerde de planologe.

Enschede heeft zich deze kritiek direct aangetrokken, laat wethouder Ed Wallinga weten. Hij kondigt aan de publieke ruimte meer voor ontmoeting in te richten. ‘Barbecuen wordt gezien als een evenement, waarvoor je een vergunning moet aanvragen. Dus ik kan het verbieden. Maar dat ga ik niet doen, integendeel: we gaan het park op een goede manier inrichten.’

“The start of this dialogue was a success. It was an open meeting with controversial debates, which is a sign of a new beginning,” said Schäuble.

The Muslim representatives attending the conference described this initiative as “positive”.

“It is a new ground for the dialogue between Christians and Muslims,” they underlined.

Other representatives said that the conference was a historic event, which integrates the Muslim community in the German sociopolitical issues.

“Muslims must be recognized as an equal religious community,” they added.

For their part, German officials said that the Muslim communities must be open and get away from “conspiracy circles”.

Most of the German political figures stressed the necessity for the Muslim community to master the German language for a better integration. Some have even suggested that preaching should be in German.

Among the subjects treated was the under-representation of the Muslim community in the German parliament.

It is also felt that one of the biggest problems of the Muslim community is the abundance of associations (more than 2,500) and the absence of a central structure uniting all the organizations and associations to form one official spokesbody for the community.

Aware of these difficulties, Schäuble said “It will be a stony path ahead, both for Muslims and for the state.”

The government estimates there are between 3.2-3.5 million Muslims living in Germany. Turkish immigrants or their descendants form the majority of the Muslim community in the European country.
