Chavez dreigt met Peru te breken

President Chavez van Venezuela heeft gedreigd de betrekkingen met Peru te verbreken als Alan Garcia tot president wordt gekozen. In dat geval roep ik mijn ambassadeur terug, zei Chavez tegen een menigte aanhangers. Garcia uitte onlangs kritiek op Chavez.

Garcia wordt waarschijnlijk de uitdager van Omala Huntala in de tweede ronde van de presidentsverkiezingen van eind mei of begin juni. Chavez heeft openlijk de kant van Humala gekozen. Garcia is meer Westers georiënteerd dan Humala.

Nu bijna alle stemmen van 9 april zijn geteld, staat Humala op 30,65%,Garcia op 24,32% en Lourdes Flores op 23,75%.

Congress members arrested at Darfur protest

WASHINGTON (AP) — Five Congress members were willingly arrested and led away from the Sudanese Embassy in plastic handcuffs Friday in protest of the Sudanese government's role in atrocities in the Darfur region.

"The slaughter of the people of Darfur must end," Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., a Holocaust survivor who founded the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, said from the embassy steps before his arrest.

Four other Democratic Congress members — James McGovern and John Olver of Massachusetts, Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas and Jim Moran of Virginia — were among 11 protesters arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful assembly, a misdemeanor subject to a fine.

"We must hold the Sudanese government accountable for the attacks they have supported on their own citizens in Darfur," Olver said.

Dozens of demonstrators carried signs, some reading "Stop the slaughter" and "Women of Darfur suffer multiple gang rapes," in front of the embassy Friday morning.

The protesters cheered as the Congress members and others were cuffed, hands behind their backs, with plastic ties and quietly led to a white police van by U.S. Secret Service uniformed officers.

The arrests were expected. Lantos' office issued a news release about them in advance.

The protesters called on the Sudanese government to accept a U.N. peacekeeping force in Darfur and allow humanitarian relief organizations full access to victims. The three-year-old conflict between rebels and government-backed militias has left at least 180,000 people dead, mostly from war-related hunger and disease, and some 2 million homeless.

President Bush on Friday renewed his call for a stronger international presence in Darfur.

"The message to the Sudanese government is: We're very serious about getting this problem solved," Bush said at the White House. "We don't like it when we see women raped and brutalized. And we expect there to be a full effort by the government to protect human life and human condition."

The United States has authorized more than $300 million for victims of the violence and to support peace talks.

Rallies against the violence in Darfur are planned in more than a dozen U.S. cities this weekend, including on Washington's National Mall on Sunday.

Mannen domineren de top van het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven. In de directies van de top 100 van Nederlandse ondernemingen is slechts 3% vrouw. Van hen is bovendien meer dan de helft buitenlands. In de Raden van Commissarissen is het aantal vrouwen zelfs gedaald. Nederland neemt in dit opzicht een opmerkelijke uitzonderingspositie in. In een vergelijkend onderzoek naar het percentage vrouwen in senior managementposities -bij 6900 middelgrote ondernemingen in 26 landen- kwam Nederland als laatste uit de bus, een gedeelde plaats met Pakistan. Stagneert hier de emancipatie?

KID POLITICS | Whiny children, claims a new study, tend to grow up rigid and traditional. Future liberals, on the other hand ...

Remember the whiny, insecure kid in nursery school, the one who always thought everyone was out to get him, and was always running to the teacher with complaints? Chances are he grew up to be a conservative.

At least, he did if he was one of 95 kids from the Berkeley area that social scientists have been tracking for the last 20 years. The confident, resilient, self-reliant kids mostly grew up to be liberals.

The study from the Journal of Research Into Personality isn't going to make the UC Berkeley professor who published it any friends on the right. Similar conclusions a few years ago from another academic saw him excoriated on right-wing blogs, and even led to a Congressional investigation into his research funding.

But the new results are worth a look. In the 1960s Jack Block and his wife and fellow professor Jeanne Block (now deceased) began tracking more than 100 nursery school kids as part of a general study of personality. The kids' personalities were rated at the time by teachers and assistants who had known them for months. There's no reason to think political bias skewed the ratings — the investigators were not looking at political orientation back then. Even if they had been, it's unlikely that 3- and 4-year-olds would have had much idea about their political leanings.

A few decades later, Block followed up with more surveys, looking again at personality, and this time at politics, too. The whiny kids tended to grow up conservative, and turned into rigid young adults who hewed closely to traditional gender roles and were uncomfortable with ambiguity.

The confident kids turned out liberal and were still hanging loose, turning into bright, non-conforming adults with wide interests. The girls were still outgoing, but the young men tended to turn a little introspective.

Block admits in his paper that liberal Berkeley is not representative of the whole country. But within his sample, he says, the results hold. He reasons that insecure kids look for the reassurance provided by tradition and authority, and find it in conservative politics. The more confident kids are eager to explore alternatives to the way things are, and find liberal politics more congenial.

In a society that values self-confidence and out-goingness, it's a mostly flattering picture for liberals. It also runs contrary to the American stereotype of wimpy liberals and strong conservatives.

Of course, if you're studying the psychology of politics, you shouldn't be surprised to get a political reaction. Similar work by John T. Jost of Stanford and colleagues in 2003 drew a political backlash. The researchers reviewed 44 years worth of studies into the psychology of conservatism, and concluded that people who are dogmatic, fearful, intolerant of ambiguity and uncertainty, and who crave order and structure are more likely to gravitate to conservatism. Critics branded it the "conservatives are crazy" study and accused the authors of a political bias.

Jost welcomed the new study, saying it lends support to his conclusions. But Jeff Greenberg, a social psychologist at the University of Arizona who was critical of Jost's study, was less impressed.

A 10,000-strong crowd gathered in the central Punjab region last month to hear opposition leader Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman call a visit by Bush an attempt at "enslaving the Pakistani nation and rewarding General Musharraf for his patriotism to America."

Newspapers have carried critical pieces on U.S. foreign policy in Pakistan and one has a "Mush & Bush" column lampooning the two leaders' relationship.

Asked by the Guardian if he had the "teeth" to bite back at his Western allies, Musharraf said: "Yes sir, I personally do -- a lot of teeth. Sometimes the teeth do not have to be shown. Pragmatism is required in international relations."

Pakistan has captured or killed hundreds of al Qaeda members since Musharraf joined a U.S.-led war on terrorism after the September 11 attacks on the United States.

Anger has been building in Pakistan over repeated U.S. attacks in the country, including an airstrike in January which killed 18 civilians in the remote Bajaur region.

Musharraf told the Guardian: "The strike was an infringement of our sovereignty and I condemned it."
