Giatsint-S self-propelled gun
The Soviet-era 152-mm Giatsint-S self-propelled gun is designed to conduct counter-battery warfare, destroy firing points and field fortification, self-propelled guns and enemy tanks.

The maximum firing range is 27,000 meters when using conventional ammunition (some sources indicate different data — 28,400 meters).

Losses of the Russian invaders
The Ukrainian troops have repeatedly destroyed such Russian self-propelled guns using various weapons.

The operators of the 73rd Maritime Special Operations Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine aimed the HIMARS system at the Russian Giatsint-S self-propelled gun. The Russian gun was spotted during reconnaissance operations in the southern sector.

The coordinates of the enemy target were promptly transferred to a missile and artillery unit of the Defense Forces.

One of the candidates for his place is Sergei Korolev, First Deputy Director of the FSB, who is associated with the leaders of the Russian underworld, including Russia's "No. 1 assassin" Aslan Gagiyev.

Alexei Komkov, appointed head of the 5th Service, is considered to be Korolev's prot�g�.

A missile has struck a Pantsir-S air defence system launcher near the village of Dubovoe (Russia's Belgorod Oblast).

Details: Local media outlets are posting photos of a damaged Pantsir-S near Dubovoe – the system has been struck by a cluster munition, but the crew managed to survive.

Black smoke was rising over the scene.

A woman said in one of the videos: "It was our air defence. What now? They won't be able to shoot down missiles now".

In addition, Russian pro-war Telegram channel lpr 1 noted: "Dubovoe. The boys are alive".

Meanwhile, Gladkov reported a grass fire in Dubovoe, but one of the media outlets clarified that the fire was at the Pantsir's location.

Novaya Gazeta noted that the smoke started near the City Mall shopping centre, located on the outskirts of Belgorod but de jure part of Dubovoe.

The newspaper said some Telegram channels later removed photos and videos of the smoke in Belgorod Oblast.

Ukrainian army says some Russian troops withdrawing from Vovchansk area
Some of the Russian forces are withdrawing from the area near Vovchansk in Kharkiv Oblast for replenishment due to a loss of combat capability, the spokesperson for the Khortytsia group of forces, Nazar Voloshyn, said on June 22 on national television.

Russia launched a new offensive on May 10 in northern Kharkiv Oblast, and Vovchansk became the scene of some of the heaviest fighting.

Moscow's forces had advanced as far as 10 kilometers (6 miles) in the region but had been halted by the first line of defense.

Russia was "bogged down" in the embattled town of Vovchansk but was constantly replenishing its forces with units from other directions, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi said on June 12.

The withdrawal of Russian units was also seen near the villages of Lyptsi and Tykhe, where the Russian armed forces suffered losses, Voloshyn said.

Voloshin said that the Russian army had lost 60 of its troops, including both killed or wounded, in that direction of the front line.

"This indicates that the enemy has suspended its active hostilities in that area, as they were not conducted over the past day and in the morning," Voloshyn said.

The Russian military yet continues to use guided aerial bombs and missiles against the settlements in the oblast, the spokesperson added.

On June 21, a Russian drone hit an Ukrposhta postal vehicle in the community of Vovchansk in Ukraine's Kharkiv Oblast, killing a courier and injuring a driver, Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported

The injured individual reportedly walked to the nearby village of Buhaiivka, where he was taken to the hospital by Ukrainian military personnel in the area.

Syniehubov said access is restricted to the site of the attack due to constant shelling.

Ukrainian Air Defense Forces shot down not a missile, but most likely a new Iranian Arash-1 or Arash-2 suiside drone on June 20, near Ochakiv, Mykolaiv Oblast. This was reported by the author of the Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channel Vanek Nikolaev.

"An incident happened near Ochakiv the day before yesterday, and everyone rushed to write that a missile was flying. After an interim examination, based on the wreckage we found and other data about this 'missile', we concluded that it was not a missile," he wrote.

There is an assumption that it was another Iranian product called Arash-1 or Arash-2 kamikaze drone. This drone is known to fly faster than Shahed drone. The range of this drone can be up to 1600-2000 km, flying at a speed of 300-500 km/h.

According to the Telegram channel, an unknown flying object maneuvered near Ochakov and was shot down by Ukrainian Navy. It did not cause any damage and there were no victims or major destruction.

The channel's author reported that it is not known for certain what Ukrainian military shot down but the experts will announce it later and will probably publish the information somewhere on their resources.

"But if it is another transfer from Iran, it is the bad news," he summarized.

Earlier Defense Express reported that russia had mentioned its rare Orion UAV in the testing phase of the modernized version.

When Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea to announce a new military partnership a few days ago, he was given the trademark military spectacle that Pyongyang has perfected.

Soldiers marching in unison, thousands of cheering children and highly choreographed groups of dancers and singers.

No expense was spared to give the illusion of grandeur.

Kim Jong Un declared his "full support and solidarity" for Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, while Putin thanked Kim for his "unwavering support".

Then, to top it off, the two signed a surprise military pact declaring each side would assist the other in the face of aggression.

At first glance, the trip could be viewed as a success.

North Korean shells found in Ukraine

It was only a few years ago that Russia was supporting sanctions designed to punish North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

It saw a nuclear-armed Pyongyang as a destabilising figure.

But with sanctions constricting the Russian economy and its war machine, Moscow has been forced to tap into North Korea's abundant supplies of Soviet-era artillery shells.

Both Pyongyang and Russia deny these claims, but satellite imagery and unmistakably North Korean missiles being discovered in Ukraine suggest otherwise.

There is also a concern North Korea could even provide ballistic missiles for Russia, as well as cheap labour and soldiers.

"North Korea's regime shows little regard for human life, even the lives of its own people," North Korea expert Sung-Yoon Lee from the Wilson Centre told the BBC.

"I would not be surprised if Putin and Kim work out a deal for North Korea to send into Russia — not only labourers and technicians — but perhaps even combat troops in the months to come."

North Korea talks tough and often touts its latest military test as a roaring success, but much of this is viewed as bluster, rather than bona fide.

Cut off from the world, North Korea's military is far less advanced than its southern neighbour. Just last month, one of its satellite tests failed spectacularly.

So it's no doubt hoping to access some of Russia's advanced military technology as part of this new partnership.

But, analysts are highly doubtful Russia would ever share its most prized military secrets.

Think of how many decades Australia and its ally the United States have been building trust and cooperation for a deal like AUKUS to be possible.

The new alliance between Russia and North Korea is only just getting started and trust and transparency are in short supply in autocracies.

South Korea warns of red line

The new "comprehensive partnership agreement" signed between Moscow and North Korea is being touted as an alliance between the two.

At first, it was unclear what the deal entailed. There was no detail about what "aggression" would trigger the pact, or what "support" the pact would prompt.

North Korea's official Korean News Agency says the deal means if either country gets invaded and is pushed into a state of war, the other must deploy "all means at its disposal without delay", including "military and other assistance".

South Korea has responded furiously.

It had warned Russia to not cross any "red lines" before the visit.

It appears the red line may have now been crossed.

South Korea's National Security Adviser Chang Ho-jin announced the country would review its stance on not providing military support for Ukraine.

He also announced another 243 Russian items would be subject to sanctions, bringing the total to 1,402.

South Korea could change its stance on supplying Ukraine
South Korea is an emerging global powerhouse for defence exports. In July 2022, the country signed a landmark defence deal with Poland worth $12.4 billion — its largest yet.

Already the ninth-largest arms exporter, Seoul wants to own the world number four spot by 2027.

But so far, South Korea has not provided lethal aid — or weapons — directly to Ukraine due to its Foreign Trade Act, something that only allows it to provide non-lethal support.

South Korean artillery shells have ended up in Ukraine, but only via sales to third-party US.

But Seoul is now talking about a possible change of stance on sending arms to Ukraine — and that is significant.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies recently reported South Korea's stockpiles of howitzer rounds could give Ukraine an important boost.

"Specific measures will be revealed later, and it will be interesting to see how Russia responds, rather than revealing our plans in advance," a presidential official told reporters.

Vladimir Putin warned South Korea that providing weapons to Ukraine would be a "big mistake".

But it's a threat that may do little to change South Korea's thinking given Putin may have already crossed a red line.

Moscow has already shown it's now firmly on the side of North Korea, recently vetoing a United Nations resolution to renew the UN Panel of Experts that monitors sanctions on North Korea.

On his recent trip to North Korea and Vietnam, Vladimir Putin argued he was building an important counterweight to the US hegemony in the region.

But Russia's embrace of North Korea has only pushed the US and its regional allies closer together.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has spent a lot of political capital casting aside historical grievances with former coloniser Japan to forge ahead and build new military ties with Tokyo.

The resolve to make the new trilateral partnership a success will now only be hardened and efforts to deepen military partnerships with others in the region, including Australia, will be made.

South Korea has flagged an interest in cooperating with the defence technology pact AUKUS, something Australia has warmly welcomed.

North Korea's ultimate goal is survival.

It knows it has vastly inferior firepower compared to its rivals. Talk of winning grand wars is little more than empty rhetoric, and perhaps the only distraction it can muster for its impoverished and starving population.

So, any extra friends it can get is likely a good thing.

For Russia, it is clinging to the idea that it is still a global powerhouse. But, as the saying goes: "You are the company you keep."

Ukraine's partisans claim infiltration of Russian air base, leave 'surprises' for pilots

The Ukrainian partisan group ATESH has claimed one of its agents successfully infiltrated a Russian air base and hinted at carrying out sabotage operations.

In a post on Telegram on June 22, the group said it had scouted the Baltimore airfield in Voronezh, around 220 kilometers north-east from the border with Kharkiv Oblast and home to Russia's 47th Guards Bomber Aviation Regiment.

Pictures and videos accompanying the post show several aircraft including a helicopter and what ATESH say are SU-34 fighter-bombers, a plane Russia frequently employs to launch missiles at Ukrainian cities.

"In some of them, Russians now have surprises waiting for them," the post reads.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify the photos or the claims made by ATESH.

The SU-34 is reported to have been the aircraft used in Russia's recent first use of the three ton FAB-3000 high-explosive aerial bomb in Kherson Oblast earlier this month.

A video claims to show a FAB-3000 bomb striking the end of a building used by the Ukrainian army as a temporary deployment point (TDP).

The post accompanying the video explains that the bomb did not succeed in making a direct hit on the target but still caused massive damage.

Ukraine could not confirm that Russia used the bomb, Air Force spokesperson Illia Yevlash said in a comment for the Kyiv Independent.

The ATESH movement is highly-active in both occupied areas of Ukraine and inside Russia itself.

On June 12, the group said a Russian satellite communication station was destroyed in a sabotage attack in Moscow Oblast.

In a video posted by Atesh partisans on Telegram, an Atesh agent is seen pouring a flammable liquid on an R-441 Liven communications satellite. The communications station is seen subsequently catching fire.

The incident allegedly occurred in the Klin district of Moscow Oblast - approximately 85 kilometers (over 50 miles) northwest of the Russian capital.

Putin strengthens ties with North Korea
Putin arrived in Hanoi on Thursday morning from North Korea after signing the strategic pact, which comes as both countries face escalating standoffs with the West and could mark their strongest connection since the end of the Cold War.

The strategic pact pledges mutual aid if either country faces “aggression.”

However, the Russian President said on Thursday he doesn't expect North Korea's volunteers to participate in the special military operation in Ukraine.

Alarm bells for the West
Putin's trip resulted in a sharp rebuke from the US Embassy in Vietnam, which said “no country should give Putin a platform to promote his war of aggression and otherwise allow him to normalise his atrocities.”

If Putin is allowed to travel freely it “could normalise Russia’s blatant violations of international law,” it said in a statement.

The US and its allies have expressed growing concerns over a possible arms arrangement in which North Korea provides Russia with badly needed munitions for use in Ukraine in exchange for Russian economic assistance and technology transfers that could enhance the threat posed by Kim’s nuclear weapons and missile programs.

Both countries deny accusations of weapons transfers, which would violate multiple UN Security Council sanctions that Russia previously endorsed.

Oleksander says he has volunteered to swap his prison cell for a trench for two reasons.

The softly-spoken 43 year old wants revenge against the Russians who have killed several of his family, but after nearly half his life behind bars, he also wants to change his direction.

His decision has seen him go from serving a prison sentence for robbery in Dnipro, to learning weapons drills in a woodland training camp in central Ukraine.

Within weeks, he and his new comrades will be trained up and on their way to join thousands of convict volunteers on the front line.

Oleksander and other prisoners have joined up under a new Ukrainian law allowing inmates to enlist in the hard-pressed army.

“I like my choice, because now instead of lying on a prison bed, I can get some new skills and change my life.”

Under the government’s new offer to inmates, prisoners signing up have their remaining sentences cleared and will be given parole if they agree to serve in the army without leave until the end of the war.

Thousands have already stepped forward according to the justice ministry, and recruits are already going through training.

The prisoner scheme is one of several new initiatives taken by the government as it tries to overcome troop shortages more than two years into Russia’s invasion.

Ukraine’s predatory neighbour has a population more than four times the size and Ukraine’s troops are outnumbered and tired.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, said last month that his army needed more men to boost the forces’ morale.

He said: “We need to staff the reserves... A large number of [brigades] are empty.”

Many Ukrainian soldiers have been fighting for over two years without the possibility of being discharged.

“We need to do this so that the guys have a normal rotation. Then their morale will be improved,” Mr Zelensky said.

Kyiv has recently tightened draft laws to try to mobilise several hundred thousand more soldiers, but that process may take months.

In the meantime, brigades are keen to take convicts.

Denys Maliuska, justice minister, said last month: “There is competition between military commanders to hire [prisoners] since there is a lack of manpower, so they really want to have access to these people.”

In total across the country, nearly 5,000 prisoners are said to have volunteered as part of the scheme. The minister has previously said he expects between 10,000 and 20,000 inmates to sign up in total.

Volunteers told The Telegraph they were driven by different things such as patriotism, revenge, or a chance to turn over a new leaf and end a cycle of crime and punishment.

Oleksander made his choice despite his sentence finishing in three months.

“After three months, I would be free, but I would have to work and hide from the draft officers,” he said.

He admits some fellow inmates thought he was “crazy” for taking the deal.

Some 300 former prisoners will pass through this camp to be trained up for the 59th brigade, which has seen heavy fighting in Kherson, Avdiivka and Krasnohorivka.

Dima, another recruit, says his main motivation is to protect his country.

The 37 year old was serving five years in an open prison for theft and burglary when he took the deal. He only had seven months left to serve and he admits his family think he is an “idiot”.

He says: “I have made many mistakes in my life, I love my country and I have decided to work on my mistakes.

“Also I don’t want the Russians to come here.

“My main goal is not to change my life, my main goal is to protect my country, but of course my life will change. I am looking forward to getting new positive emotions.”

Konstantin, now aged 32, was only 20 when he was first given a prison sentence. His most recent conviction was for stealing a car.

He said: “When I was young, I romanticised crime. Now I am more thinking that if I finish this sentence, I will be 37. If I am 37 and have served so long in prison, what can I do?”

He hopes the army will give him a chance to change his life, as well as to defend his home region of Zaporizhzhia.

He said: “When I made the decision, some of my friends thought I was playing with death. “I let my family know and they were not happy with it. They were worried.

“It was a free choice. We were put under no pressure.”

Ukrainian officials are keen to point out the differences from Russia’s recruitment of convicts to serve in the Wagner mercenary group.

Russian prisoners reported being forced to sign contracts, then being poorly trained and equipped before being thrown into suicidal assaults.

Each of the Ukrainian recruits interviewed by The Telegraph stressed they had volunteered freely, without any pressure.

Nazar, the chief reconnaissance officer for the 59th brigade, who has now switched to training duties, said: “We are not afraid of condemnation from society because compared to Russia, where they force prisoners to fight, these men have come voluntarily.”

Prisoners convicted of certain offences are barred from serving, including the murder of two or more people, manslaughter through drink-driving, sexual crimes, treason and corruption.

Most who sign up have been convicted of thefts, robberies and drug offences. Their applications must be approved by a court.

The prisoners are vetted and assessed in training units and must pass medical checks. After that, they undergo 60 days of training before they can be sent to the front line.

Instructors say the new recruits have been disciplined and they respect the convicts for their decision.

Nazar predicts their new units will also have no problems with them.

He said: “The brigade guys don’t care that much if [the new recruits] were in prison or not. They are normal guys and any one can get into trouble and go to prison. Most of them were in prison for small crimes.”

He complained that the US administration had sent a notice of closure to the visa centres in Washington and New York, calling it a "petty, nasty case".

Instead, Russia is considering possible retaliatory measures in response to the actions of the US authorities.

In his opinion, "the Americans are trying to break" Russia, change its foreign policy and "force diplomats to hide behind the walls of the embassy, not to communicate, not to work".

The Foundation reported that the batch consists of 40 single-shot hand grenade launchers.

Earlier on June 22, Russian forces struck the city of Kharkiv with glide bombs, killing three people and injuring 54.

Three glide bombs hit an enterprise in the Kholodnohirskyi district, and another one struck a five-story residential building in the Osnovianskyi district. The attack was reportedly launched from Belgorod Oblast, the regional prosecutor's office reported.

The platform’s stability is ensured by four hydraulic stabilizers, allowing for horizontal aiming of 180 degrees and vertical aiming from -5 to +72 degrees. The system is designed for a crew of four, but can be operated by just two if necessary.

The Hawkeye’s firing range with standard ammunition is 11.6 kilometers, and it can reach up to 19.5 kilometers with rocket-assisted projectiles. The maximum firing rate is eight rounds per minute for three minutes, with a sustained rate of three rounds per minute. The howitzer can use the full range of 105 mm ammunition utilized by the U.S. Army.

The fire control system includes an M137A2 optical telescope sight and a digital system MG 9000. This digital system comprises an LN-270 inertial navigation system from Northrop Grumman, a DFS-02 direct fire sight camera from Sekai Electronics, Inc, an S67-1575-76 GPS antenna from Sensor Systems Inc, a Weibul Scientific muzzle velocity radar, and a Mandus display unit for the gunner.

He said this during his participation in the KBS television program.

He noted that the transfer of weapons to Ukraine will directly depend on similar actions by Russia, which plans to transfer technology and high-precision weapons to the DPRK.

Russians saw him and threw granade at him wich exploded slightly above and behind Ukrainian soldier wounding his back and legs. The injuries weren't critical so he opened fire and threw his own granade at Russians and then finished them off with his assault rifle to avoid, as he said, checking on them and wasting time.

P.S. He also told how he enlisted. He is from the south of Ukraine and at the very beginnign of the war he went with his 6 years old daughter to check rabbits in their garden. That's when Russian cluster munition hit them, injuring his and his daughters legs. They were taken to the hospital where he decided to enlist.

Twitter Inc. has removed false tweets from the Russian embassy account in London that claimed images from the bombing of a children's and maternity hospital in Mariupol, Ukraine, were fake.

The now-removed tweets claimed the hospital was "used by armed forces and radicals" and that an injured, pregnant woman who had been photographed in the attack was an actor, according to screenshots published by The Guardian.

A Twitter spokesperson said the tweets were taken down because they violated the social media company's policies on hateful conduct and abusive behavior.

Other official accounts linked to the Kremlin have tweeted false information, including a post from the account of the Russian embassy in South Africa that claimed South Africans had sent a "great number of letters of solidarity" to the embassy and said Russia is fighting "Nazism in Ukraine." The post is still live on Twitter.

Twitter said it has taken steps to curb the spread of false information on the war in past weeks, such as pausing Tweet recommendations and advertisements in Ukraine and Russia. Twitter has been restricted in Russia in retaliation for blocking Russian state-owned media content on the service across the European Union.

"More and more people are coming to us with a request: help us after July 1. These are often people who have nothing to return to. Until the outbreak of war, they lived in the zone that is now occupied or in the regions directly bordering the front line," said Igor Hork�w, chairman of the Przemyśl branch of the Union of Ukrainians in Poland.

Hork�w highlighted the uncertain future facing many refugees, noting that two to five thousand Ukrainians arrive in Przemyśl daily , mainly from heavily shelled regions such as Kharkiv, Odessa, and Sumy.

Why?
The Polish government has justified the cessation of the daily benefit by citing difficulties in maintaining the integrity of the system. There were also increasing concerns about applications being submitted by Ukrainian citizens for people who were actually family members.

As of May, over 950,000 Ukrainians residing in Poland had an active national identification (PESEL) number, with the UNHCR forecasting that this number will reach 1.1 million by the end of the year.

Only 17% of Poles would accept Ukrainian refugees with the possibility of a long-term settlement, a decrease from 37% more than a year ago. Some 61% of the respondents want Ukrainians to return to their home country after the war.

"Such results are not surprising, they are the result of discrepancies in the perception of foreigners after a longer period of their stay in the country," Jan Brzozowski, head of the Jagiellonian Center for Migration Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, told Rzeczpospolita.

Russian propaganda has sought to capitalize on skepticism toward refugees in the host countries and demonize the Ukrainians, seeking to drive a wedge between local populations and the governments, the Ukraine Crisis Media Center said.

Professor Duszczyk used to be a researcher at the Migration Research Center at the University of Warsaw before.

We couldn't avoid discussing Warsaw's position on returning draft dodgers and the situation on the Polish-Ukrainian border, as well as the possibility of a new blockade.

For example, if we agreed to provide the Ukrainian government with information about draft-age men in Poland, these people would simply move to other EU countries with better conditions, such as Germany or Spain.

This would clearly not be in the EU's interest, as it would prefer to avoid repeated migration processes.

At the same time, we do not support those who illegally crossed the border.

Among other changes from 1 July only those who crossed the EU border legally can receive refugee status.

However, this rule does not apply to those who have arrived in Poland and received a PESEL number.

Ukrainians committing crimes in Poland are currently being deported to Ukraine. The fact that there is a war in Ukraine is not an obstacle in this case.

Regarding the issue of draft dodging, there is a problem since martial law is in effect in Ukraine, but not in Poland.

In this case, the principle is that extradition to another country requires the crime to be equally recognised in both countries.

However, this is not possible, at least not until Poland inroduces martial law.

An M2 Bradley ODS SA infantry fighting vehicle of the Ukrainian 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade has survived an enemy FPV drone strike, as reported by the brigade’s press service.

“On the video, you can see how the IFV operates against enemy infantry. Already on the way back, the FPV drone hits the vehicle. As you can see, the crew did not even feel this and continued moving,” the Brigade states.

The FPV drone hit the Bradley in the front projection, but the combat vehicle did not stop and continued to move.

It is also noticeable that the combat vehicle is equipped with Bradley Reactive Armor Tiles.

47th Brigade`s Bradley IFV combat engagement
Militarnyi reported on June 7 that the crew of the M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle of the 47th Mechanized Brigade shot down an enemy armored personnel carrier with infantry at close range.

The event took place in the Pokrovsk direction, where an enemy BTR-82A with troops on board was able to break through to a settlement. The Bradley crew immediately advanced to intercept it.

The footage shows how 25mm projectiles fired from the M242 Bushmaster gun hits the hull of the enemy APC, in particular the place where the enemy squad was located.

At one moment, Bradley and the BTR-82A narrowly avoided collision, leaving mere meters between the combat vehicles.

It is reported that some of them immediately expressed a desire not to be exchanged or even to join the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

The “I Want to Live” project was launched in September 2022. Its goal is to help willing Russian servicemen safely surrender to Ukrainian captivity and save their lives.

In case of surrender, the project guarantees detention in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.

In addition, such Russians are also guaranteed that they will not be exchanged or returned to the Russian Federation if they wish.

If a Russian registers with “I Want to Live” in advance, the Ukrainian side registers him as having been captured in combat, meaning that he receives payments and status in Russia.

In late April 2024, Militarnyi reported that a third camp for holding Russian prisoners of war, Center-3, had been opened in Ukraine.

The new camp was opened due to the large number of Russians who surrendered.

In Center-3, Russian army personnel have facilities for work, sports, and leisure activities. The center also includes designated areas for cooking, resting, and interacting with psychologists.

Ukraine regularly grants access to its main prisoner of war camp to the Red Cross, the UN, and international journalists.

The publication states that after the initial use of sea drones by Ukraine, the Russians built larger barriers at the entrance to the port of Sevastopol, making drone strikes almost impossible.

The team of the head of the SBU Vasyl Malyuk then came up with an alternative: laying sea mines, the journalists noted.

This was done using bottom mines, made of plastic and weighing about 180 kg. They are hard to detect as they sink into the silt in shallow waters.

On September 14, the Samum missile corvette hit one of the mines, which punched a hole in its stern. The vessel is still under repair in dry dock.

The publication noted that in the following weeks, Sea Baby drones traveled more than 4,800 kilometers and laid about 15 more mines.

During one of the missions, detected by three Raptor-class patrol boats, the drone opened fire with a grenade launcher, hitting an enemy vessel, according to SBU Brigadier General Ivan Lukashevych, known by the call sign Hunter.

On October 11, the large patrol boat Pavel Derzhavin hit a mine while entering Sevastopol Bay for maintenance. On October 13, the boat was redirected to another port for repairs but encountered another mine while leaving Sevastopol Bay.

Journalists say that a large tugboat sent for its rescue also hit a mine and had to be towed back to port.

The WSJ noted that a few days later, an explosion also damaged the modern minesweeper Vladimir Kozitsky, one of only two in Russian service.

This was the world's first example of successful remote mining, according to journalists.

"Before, naval drones were used mostly for surveillance or logistics. We (SBU – ed.) are doing many things that no one else in the world has done before," a source told the publication.

The European Union proposed a deal to Hungary, allowing the country to opt out of aiding Ukraine while not blocking decisions by other allies, but Budapest rejected this offer, said Josep Borrell, the head of EU diplomacy, to the Financial Times.

He mentioned that the EU offered Hungary a deal similar to the one NATO made with the country's Prime Minister Viktor Orban last week: giving Budapest the option to refrain from activities supporting Ukraine in exchange for not vetoing other allies' aid to Kyiv.

However, according to the top diplomat, Hungary refused a similar proposal from the EU.

"We have offered Hungary: your money will not be used to support Ukraine in any means. Not just lethal, but on anything. Take your money. Put your money out of the box. I don’t want to use your money," Borrell explained about the canceled idea.

According to the official, Budapest's position "has something to do with the strong links that they have with Russia."

A spokesperson for the Hungarian government declined to comment to the FT.

Local media reports, in particular, a strike on a Russian military unit near Yevpatoria.

The Crimean Wind Telegram channel, citing video and photos from eyewitnesses, reported that a large fire had been going on at a military facility of the Russian invaders in the village of Vityno.

OSINT researchers of the CyberBoroshno Telegram channel found out that at least one Krasukha electronic warfare system was located on the territory of this facility, designed to cover command posts and other important Russian facilities.

From a military unit near Yevpatoriia, the Russians control the orbital grouping of their spacecraft. In particular, they provide the GLONASS navigation system and space monitoring.

Previously, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a missile attack on the positions of the Russian S-400 Triumf air defense system in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

The strike took place on the night of June 11-12, and hit a position located almost 2.5 kilometers from the village of Verkhniosadove, Bakhchysarai district.

Caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev and Russia-friendly President Rumen Radev will jointly represent Bulgaria at the NATO summit in Washington next month that is likely to discuss plans for further aid to Ukraine in its fight against the Kremlin's forces.

The announcement appears to be somewhat of an awkward compromise of a dispute between Bulgaria's Council of Ministers and the presidency just ahead of the June 21 deadline for delegations to register for the July 9-11 NATO gathering.

As a parliamentary republic, Bulgaria traditionally would be represented by the head of government, the prime minister.

However, Glavchev, serving in a caretaker role, asked parliament to decide whether he or the president should go to the summit.

The parliament, led Boyko Borisov's GERB party, declined to make a decision in the dispute, leading Glavchev to announced that both will attend.

Delyan Peevski, head of the liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party, said Glavchev should represent Bulgaria to prevent Radev from pressing any pro-Russia positions at the summit.

"Radev should not be allowed to use this highest NATO forum to spread Russian propaganda and instill fear in Bulgarian society, which we have witnessed in scandalous cases," said Peevski, who has been sanctioned by the United States and Britain for alleged corruption but positions himself as a guarantor of "Bulgaria's unwavering value of belonging to Euro-Atlanticism."

Former Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov of the reformist We Continue the Change-Democratic Bulgaria coalition, also called for Glavchev to represent the country at the summit.

Kazakh Nationals Identified As Suspects In Shooting Of Kazakh Opposition Activist In Kyiv

Ukraine's National Police said on June 21 that two Kazakh nationals are suspected of shooting a noted Kazakh opposition activist and journalist Aidos Sadyqov in Kyiv earlier this week.

According to a statement from the National Police, the suspected attackers are Altai Zhaqanbaev, born in 1988, and Meiram Qarataev, born in 1991. The two suspects were added to the international wanted list, with a Kyiv court issuing arrest warrants for them.

The statement added that investigators found Zhaqanbaev and Qarataev arrived in Ukraine on June 2 from Poland. They rented an apartment and bought a car in Kyiv, after which they surveyed Sadyqov's everyday routine.

"On June 18, one of the suspects approached [Sadyqov's] car and shot him, while his accomplice was near the building to act as a lookout. After that they fled the crime scene," the statement said, adding that the two suspects then left Ukrainian territory via the Ukrainian-Moldovan border.

Investigations are underway to find out who ordered the attempt on Sadyqov's life.

The Kazakh Interior Ministry issued a statement right after Sadyqova's YouTube video was published, saying that "Qarataev was dismissed from the organs attached to the ministry in January 2019 and currently is not a police officer."

Earlier on June 19, Sadyqova told RFE/RL that, hours before the attack, she and her husband had issued a new video titled Toqaev Is Putin's Puppet on their YouTube channel.

The video criticizes Toqaev's "pro-Russian politics" and looks at the activities of Russian oligarchs and agents of influence in Kazakhstan, some of whom obtained Kazakh citizenship after Russia launched its ongoing invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

She added that Toqaev stands to be a beneficiary of the shooting "because the Kazakh opposition has been fully cleansed." She did not present any evidence that connected the president in any way to the shooting.

Toqaev's spokesman Berik Uali said on June 21 that the Kazakh president "had ordered law enforcement entities to find the two suspects' whereabouts and undertake corresponding measures."

"Kazakhstan's side is ready to cooperate with Ukraine's law enforcement structures, including via Interpol," Uali said.

The Sadyqovs, along with their children, moved to Kyiv in 2014 after Kazakh authorities launched a case against Natalya, who worked as a journalist for the independent Respublika newspaper at the time. She was accused of slander.

Sadyqov used to lead a branch of the opposition Azat Social Democratic Party in his native Aqtobe region in Kazakhstan's northwest until 2010.

He later headed a group that was a major force for establishing a union to defend the rights of Kazakh workers at the Chinese-owned CNPC-Aktobemunaygaz oil company.

EU countries today approved a first tranche of up to �1.4 billion in military aid for Ukraine coming from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets, according to four diplomats.

The money is channeled to Ukraine through the Ukraine Assistance Fund (UAF), but payments have been blocked by Hungary.

However, the Council's legal service argued that Budapest cannot stop these payments because it abstained in the vote earlier this year creating the UAF. The reason allowing the work-around is that the funds do not come from EU taxpayers, EU officials said.

The money won't be used for reimbursements, as is normally the case with the UAF, but for direct purchases of kit like ammunition and aerial defense systems. A quarter of the amount will be used for purchases from Ukrainian industries.

Countries had until 11 a.m. to voice their opinion, and none cast a negative vote, according to an internal Council message seen by POLITICO. The decision did not require unanimity, meaning Hungary could not block it.

Despite today's agreement, Hungary is continuing to block the payment of �6.6 billion under the UAF as a partial reimbursement for weapons purchased for Ukraine. According to one diplomatic, Budapest is "furious" at what happened today.

The final figure of the amount of profits from the frozen assets that will go to Kyiv is still unclear, but diplomats said it ranges between �1.2 billion and �1.4 billion.

The formal announcement is expected at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday.

A dozen girls have told The Daily Beast that they were kidnapped and sexually abused by Russian paramilitaries.

BOUAR, Central African Republic—A pair of twin sisters were happy to escape a harrowing abduction when Russian paramilitaries rescued them from kidnappers who had snatched them from their home on motorbikes. Their joy was to prove short-lived.

Armed men had abducted Fatou and her twin sister, 17, from their home in the northwestern Central African Republic (CAR) market town of Bouar in September. The girls were being spirited out of town when Russian paramilitaries in a pickup caught up with them, arrested the men and rescued the girls.

“We were so relieved when we saw the white soldiers,” Fatou told The Daily Beast. “We thought we were the luckiest girls in the world.”

But that wasn’t the end of the girls’ terror.

For three days, Fatou said, she and her sister were kept in a small, “dirty,” rat-infested room inside a military base in Bouar. As soon as they arrived, she said, Russian paramilitaries gave them injections which they said were meant to treat any injuries they had sustained. “We were surprised they were giving us injections for wounds because neither of us was injured,” Fatou said.

It wasn’t just the injections—which Fatou believes were contraceptive shots—that were sinister. Fatou also said the girls were given medicine that was intended to make them unaware of themselves and their surroundings.

“They told us we couldn’t return to our home immediately, as they needed to treat the wounds we sustained and be sure we were of sound health before letting us go,” Fatou said. “But whenever they gave us the medicine, which they usually dissolved in water, we slowly became unconscious.”

The girls usually became fully conscious of themselves hours after the drugs were administered, according to Fatou, who said she and her sister often realized their underwear had been removed and that they sometimes felt pain around their vaginas. “On the first day they gave us the medicine, my sister woke up hours later and discovered she was bleeding from her private parts.”

The girls were convinced they had been raped by the Russians. They then confronted the men, who denied the accusation but warned them never to tell anyone about what happened: “They said they’ll find us and kill us if we ever told anyone that we were raped by white soldiers,” Fatou said.

In the three years since the town was recaptured from rebels in February 2021, Russian paramilitaries have drugged, raped and administered contraceptives to hundreds of young women, according to dozens of witness accounts.

The sexual violence continued even after the restructuring of the Wagner Group’s operations in Africa following the death of its founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin, in a plane crash last August. Under the supervision of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which has now named the paramilitary structure Africa Corps, the abuse has not ended.

In many cases, the girls say they were raped after being drugged and injected with contraceptives without their consent. Some say they were forced to take the shot at gunpoint, and were given emergency contraceptive pills after being raped. The victims are mostly teenagers—some as young as 13.

This report is based on interviews with a dozen young women who say they were injected and raped by Russian paramilitaries inside an army base in Bouar, a town about 100 miles from the CAR border with Cameroon. The Daily Beast also interviewed three former rebel fighters who were later recruited by the Russians, and four soldiers from the Central African national army (FACA), including a medical officer who worked in the military base. All were aware of the incidents.

The abuse of young women in the Bouar military base has been happening on a regular basis for three years, according to witnesses. Women who were either rescued from armed male kidnappers or arrested for associating with rebel fighters were held at the base for days or weeks. The victims were often told that the injections and pills were aimed at preventing them from contracting viral diseases. Those who refused to comply were often tortured and then forcibly injected, according to two FACA personnel.

Karmel*, 19, told The Daily Beast that Russian paramilitaries arrived at her compound near a primary school in Bouar two years ago and ordered everyone to leave the premises. The Russians, she said, claimed they had received intelligence that rebels were about to attack the area. The teenager recounted how the paramilitaries then decided to take a few young girls to the Bouar military base, where they said the girls would be safer.

“When we got there, they gave us food and something that tasted like fruit juice which they served in cups for us to drink,” said Karmel, who was 17 at the time. “I fell asleep and when I woke up I was bleeding from my private parts. Someone had raped me.”

Karmel’s neighbor, Bibi*, who was one of five girls taken from their compound by the Russians, confirmed her account. “We knew we had been raped when some of us woke up with pain and blood coming out of our private parts,” Bibi, who was 15 when the incident occurred, told The Daily Beast.

Not every girl who was taken to the military base survived, according to Karmel. She said one of the girls was shot by a Russian paramilitary after she confronted camp officials whom she accused of raping her.

“She was cursing the soldiers and threatening to expose all of them for what they did to us,” said Karmel. “Suddenly, we heard a gunshot and before we knew it our friend was dead on the floor with blood everywhere.”

The event was corroborated by Bibi and Nidal*, another teenager from the same compound who was taken with her friends to Bouar military base on the same day.

“I saw the white soldier pull out a gun and shoot her at close range,” Nidal, who was 14 at the time, told The Daily Beast. “Minutes later, two [FACA] soldiers came and took her body away.”

Russian paramilitaries were not active in the northwest of CAR until early 2021, when FACA forces and the Wagner Group began a campaign to reclaim territories in the region seized by rebels from the Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC), an alliance of CAR’s armed groups formed in 2020 to disrupt the country’s presidential election. Realizing that it needed to boost its size to effectively take on the rebels, Wagner used the Officer’s Union for International Security (OUIS), a Russia-based company sanctioned last year by the United States Treasury Department, to obscure an increase of so-called Russian military instructors operating in CAR. Since their arrival, locals have consistently recounted incidents of human rights abuses.

Whispers about rape started as a trickle when Bouar, CAR’s fifth largest city with about 40,000 inhabitants, descended into conflict in 2020. The trickle became a flood in the years that followed. Young women have been trapped in the fighting between Russian paramilitaries, backed by FACA forces, and rebels from the CPC. In the last three years, tens of thousands have been forced to leave their homes, mostly to camps for internally displaced people. Others who encountered Russian paramilitaries either during rescue operations or when the Russians showed up in their areas ended up in the military base, where they say they were drugged and raped.

Alleged rape survivors in Bouar and their families are trapped in more ways than one, between their trauma and the fear that, in the highly insecure and volatile area they live, they could become victims again.

“It seems everyone who carries a gun in Bouar also carries an intention to rape a woman,” said Nidal, who told The Daily Beast that armed rebels raped her on her way to the market weeks after she and her friends were let go by the Russian paramilitaries who had sexually abused them. “Soldiers are raping us and rebels are doing the same.”

Rebels from the CPC took control of Bouar, which sits strategically on the route leading from the capital Bangui to Cameroon, on Dec. 27, 2020, and immediately began to rape young girls, including a minor, according to a United Nations report (PDF). In February 2021, FACA forces and Russian paramilitaries regained control of the town. The U.N. said the fighters who recaptured Bouar “committed rapes.”

But it is from the Bouar military base, where the Russians are present, that the most devastating stories have emerged.

Two FACA soldiers told The Daily Beast that some of the girls brought to the military base were gang-raped by Russian paramilitaries who often drugged the victims to ensure that they weren’t fully conscious.

“There were often two or three white soldiers raping a little girl,” one of the soldiers said. “The victims were always given pills and injections to make sure they don’t get pregnant.”

This started when FACA and Russian paramilitaries took control of the town in 2021, according to accounts from soldiers. Witnesses said the perpetrators usually kept their victims in the base for days until they were sure that the girls had the required pill dosage to avoid pregnancy.

Dozens of Russian paramilitaries are involved in the atrocities, according to witnesses. The rapes, they said, often occurred in small rooms with two or three fighters sexually abusing between two and six victims.

The abuse did not only occur in Bouar, according to two of the victims who told The Daily Beast how the Russian mercenaries who drugged, raped and injected them in Bouar transported them to B�loko, a town near the border with Cameroon about 70 miles west of Bouar, where Russian paramilitaries at another military camp also sexually abused them.

“After two days [in the Bouar military base], the white soldiers put four of us in their [pickup] vehicle and drove us to B�loko without even telling us why they were taking us there,” said a 17-year-old fruit seller who claimed she was lured by Russian paramilitaries to the Bouar military base last August. “On the night we arrived, they took us to a room, turned off the lights and forced themselves on us.”

A FACA soldier and a former rebel fighter later recruited by the Russians corroborated the claim that girls who had been raped in Bouar were later transported to B�loko, where they faced more abuse.

“Sex trafficking occurred often [at the Bouar military base],” said the former rebel fighter who became part of a group of local recruits commonly referred to as “Black Russians.” “Sometimes, 10 girls could be taken at once to B�loko where the white soldiers [at the military camp] also rape them.”

Since 2021, when they helped FACA to retake the town from CPC rebels who had seized it at the end of the previous year, Russian paramilitaries have been active in B�loko. The town is CAR's first customs checkpoint on the trade corridor between Bangui and the Cameroonian port city of Douala.

Russian and CAR officials did not respond to requests for comment from The Daily Beast on the rape allegations. Attempts to interview Aleksandr Ivanov, director of OUIS which in the past claimed to represent Wagner mercenaries in the country, were unsuccessful. In the same vein, emails sent to the Russian Embassy in Bangui, where Denis Pavlov, an intelligence official deployed by Moscow to keep an eye on Russian operations in the restive African nation, has an office, went unanswered. Russia’s Ministry of Defense, which currently oversees the operations of Russian paramilitaries in the CAR, also failed to respond to requests for comment.

The CAR is one of the most dangerous places in the world for women. Every hour, two people in the country become victims of “gender-based violence,” according to a U.N. report which stressed that the statistics only include cases where survivors had consented to sharing information.

Last year Doctors Without Borders, a charity that provides humanitarian medical care, reported that its teams took care of more than 19,500 survivors of sexual violence across CAR between 2018 and 2022. During the same period, the U.N. documented nearly 15,000 other cases of sexual violence in the country reported by other humanitarian organisations working in CAR, or by state structures.

In May 2019, the Central African government and the U.N. special rapporteur on sexual violence in conflict signed an agreement to tackle sexual violence by armed groups, including bringing attackers to justice and providing necessary services for survivors. But widespread and systematic use of rape as a tactic of war has continued, even by U.N. peacekeepers who’ve long been in the spotlight over allegations of child rape and other sexual abuse. In 2021, Secretary-General Ant�nio Guterres ordered the immediate repatriation of the entire peacekeeping contingent from Gabon following credible reports of sexual abuse by some of its 450 members.

Of the dozen girls who told The Daily Beast that they were raped in Bouar, only half obtained medical care and none disclosed the rapes to medical personnel out of fear that they might be stigmatized, meaning that they were unable to get essential post-rape treatment. The victims said they’ve been depressed and traumatized since the incidents.

Decades of violence and instability, including six coups, have rocked the CAR since independence in 1960. Despite being rich in diamonds and gold, the country is one of the poorest in the world. Its resources have been plundered by those in authority, and rebel groups have funded their operations through the illegal gold and diamond trade. More recently, the Russians have got in on the act, seizing goldmines often through brutal attacks that leave dozens of locals dead, and colluding with CAR’s political leadership, enabling billions of dollars in gold to bypass the Central African state and depriving the fragile nation of hundreds of millions in state revenue.

In 2013, the country was plunged into civil war when a mainly Muslim rebel coalition called S�l�ka took control of Bangui and toppled the government. In response to rebel uprisings and looting, Christian vigilantes began a bloody ethnic cleansing of the country’s Muslim minority. The U.N. imposed an arms embargo on CAR in December 2013 and established a peacekeeping mission in response to widespread human-rights abuses, but much of the fragile nation remains controlled by rebel fighters (who now call themselves ex-S�l�ka) and Christian militants, who struggle for control of territory and rich natural resources in a conflict that has killed and displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

In 2016, Faustin-Archange Touad�ra, who previously served as prime minister, was elected president of the war-torn nation, but not long after he was sworn into office, the former colonial power France—which had sent troops to the country in late 2013 in an effort to prevent violence between the religious militias—ended its military mission in the troubled country. Touad�ra then turned to Russia for help in strengthening his country’s military and overturning the U.N. arms embargo. The Kremlin accepted the request, but not without the African nation agreeing to allow Russia to explore its natural resources. (The U.N. approved a Russian training mission to CAR in 2017.)

Initially, Valery Zakharov, a former Russian military intelligence officer was installed as the national security adviser to Touad�ra, overseeing the operations of Wagner paramilitaries across the country. He quit the role in 2022 and was replaced by his former prot�g�s Dmitry Syty and Vitaly Perfilev.

For months, Syty, who was placed under financial sanctions by the U.S. Treasury in September 2020, acted as Wagner’s operational leader and communications adviser to President Touad�ra, while Perfilev played the role of national security adviser to the CAR leader, supervising all Wagner contractors present in the country. Both men, who oversaw Russian paramilitary operations in the country as the rapes in Bouar and B�loko grew, are still in the country, but their influence has reduced since Russia’s Ministry of Defense created the Africa Corps and took control of its operations.

Syty and Perfilev did not respond to The Daily Beast’s requests for comment.

Two FACA personnel told The Daily Beast that some soldiers who weren’t comfortable with what was going on had written to top government and security officials in Bangui to inform them that young girls were being raped by Russian paramilitaries in Bouar and then trafficked to B�loko where they were further abused.

“The letter was sent to the president, the national security adviser (Perfilev) and to the head of the military, but nothing was done about it,” one of the soldiers said. “Instead, some [FACA personnel] were moved from Bouar and sent elsewhere.”

When contacted, a senior adviser to President Touad�ra told The Daily Beast that the CAR government “is not aware of incidents of rape” by Russia paramilitaries in Bouar and B�loko. “We have not received such a report,” he said.

Some of the victims of rape by Russian paramilitaries in Bouar and B�loko have had very challenging pasts.

Fatou and her twin sister lost their father, a carpenter, and older brother on Dec. 27, 2020, the same day CPC rebels took full control of Bouar after seizing a part of the town a week earlier. Fatou said both father and son left home early in the morning to visit an extended family member not far away from where they lived. In the evening, a neighbor found the bodies of the two men lying on the street. They had both been shot in the head.

“The death of our father, who was our breadwinner, and our brother brought hardship for our family,” said Fatou, who lives with her twin sister and ailing mother near the Bouar main market. “Because of lack of money, my sister and I have been forced to stop secondary school.”

When Russian paramilitaries rescued Fatou and her sister from their kidnappers last September, the girls were asked about their background and their responses proved how vulnerable they are.

“When we told the white soldiers that we had lost our father and that our mother was bedridden, they laughed at us and called us orphans,” said Fatou. “What we told them about ourselves made them believe we were poor children who had nobody.”

The sisters were let go after three days which Fatou described as the “worst days of my life.” The paramilitaries, she said, gave no explanation as to why the girls were finally allowed to go home.

“They came to us in the morning and told us we could go home,” Fatou said. “We were still in pain but we managed to trek home.”

Unlike Fatou and her sister, who were told that the injections and pills the were given at the Bouar military base were meant to prevent diseases, other girls told The Daily Beast that the soldiers forcefully gave them injections and pills without offering any explanation.

“They’ll threaten to kill you if you don’t comply,” one victim told The Daily Beast. “I took the injection because I didn’t want to be killed.”

Two FACA officials—one of them a medical official—who were at the Bouar military base for some time told The Daily Beast that the victims were often given the Depo-Provera contraceptive injection.

Also administered, according to the FACA officials, is Levonorgestrel, an emergency contraceptive that is used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex. A common brand given to the victims in Bouar is Postinor-2, the officials said.

“I didn’t see anyone react adversely to any of the drugs,” said the FACA medical personnel. “But it was necessary that they took them if they were to avoid being pregnant.”

Medical experts told The Daily Beast that women who seek to take Depo-Provera usually need a prescription for the injection from their health-care provider, who would likely review their medical history and possibly check their blood pressure before prescribing the drug.

Research suggests that Depo-Provera might cause a loss of bone mineral density especially in teens who haven't reached peak bone mass. And that the loss may not be reversible.

“There are other side effects like depression, decreased libido, leukorrhea, ectopic pregnancy, retinal thrombosis and pulmonary embolism which may not be noticed immediately,” Dr. Collins Anyachi of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, told The Daily Beast. “That’s why it’s important for those who are given the shot to be closely monitored.”

For some of the rape victims in Bouar and in B�loko, the pain inflicted on them by their rapists will never go away.

“I cry every day when I think about the way I was abused,” Fatou said. “I will never forget what these white soldiers did to me.”

The European Union on Monday slapped new sanctions on Russia over its war on Ukraine, targeting Moscow’s shadow fleet of tankers moving liquefied natural gas through Europe as well as several companies.

At a meeting in Luxembourg, where the sanctions were endorsed, EU foreign ministers also agreed on new financial support to help Ukraine defend itself. Some expressed concern about a rise in hybrid attacks by Russia – including allegations of election interference, cyber-attacks and sabotage.

In an effort to push Russia into using more costly routes for energy purposes, the ministers said in a statement, the EU will “forbid reloading services of Russian LNG in EU territory for the purpose of transshipment operations to third countries.”

The EU estimates that about 4-to-6 billion cubic meters (141 billion-212 billion cubic feet) of Russian LNG was shipped to third countries via EU ports last year. Russia is suspected of running a “ghost fleet” of up to 400 ships to evade sanctions and keep up the flow of energy earnings so that it can finance the war.

The measures will target ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore transfers as well as reloading operations. It also involves a crackdown on the re-export of LNG to third countries via the EU, plus a ban on new investments to help Russia complete LNG projects it is working on.

Borrell said that an agreement was reached to provide Ukraine with 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in July, and a further 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) by the end of the year, to boost its stocks of air defense equipment and ammunition, and to help bolster the country’s defense industry.

The money would be drawn from profits made from frozen Russian assets held in Europe, he said.

Earlier, some ministers had insisted that action must be taken to end hybrid attacks in Europe by Russia that take place in a “grey zone” just below the threshold of military action which are aimed at destabilizing Ukraine’s backers.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said that “there’s a plethora of actions they have been undertaking against European countries.” Finland has closed border crossings with Russia, blaming the Kremlin for an orchestrated campaign exploiting migrants.

“There is no observer status in Europe anymore to Russia’s aggression. We are all victims of Russia’s aggression,” she said. “It is crucial that we keep on aiding Ukraine because Russia only understands power.”

Her Lithuanian counterpart, Gabrielius Landsbergis, said there is “ample evidence” of malign activity by Russia.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think that we are yet sending the right message,” he said. “Moscow has to get a very clear message that whenever they escalate, they will receive an answer from our side.”

NATO warned in May of Russian “hostile state activity” toward both their countries, as well as against the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Poland and the U.K., and said that the Kremlin’s actions “constitute a threat to allied security.”

In a separate move, the EU imposed sanctions on two people accused of online espionage with the “Callisto group,” Ruslan Peretyatko and Andrey Korinets. It said the group has waged cyber operations against EU member countries to try to steal sensitive defense and diplomatic data.

Also targeted for hacking activities and spreading malicious software were members of the “Armageddon hacker” and “Wizard Spider” groups.

Scholz's remarks came in the context of disappointing European Parliament election results for his Social Democratic Party in eastern Germany. However, the chancellor emphasized that there is currently no alternative to Germany's support for Ukraine in the war.

"It is true that there are many citizens who disagree with our support for Kyiv. They also do not agree with the sanctions we have imposed against Russia. This is reflected in the election results, but I believe there is no alternative at the moment," said the German chancellor.

Scholz stressed that it was Russia that committed an act of aggression against Ukraine and that this war is an attempt by Russia to redraw the world map. Therefore, the blame for violating the border agreements that had been in place for decades lies solely with Moscow.

Volodymyr Zelensky has ordered the new chief of Ukraine’s state guard service to purge its ranks after two of its officers were accused of plans to assassinate senior officials.

The state security service (SBU) said last month that it had caught two guard service colonels accused of cooperating with Russia to plot the assassination of the Ukrainian president, military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov and other officials.

Mr Zelensky introduced staff to the new head of Ukraine’s state guard, Colonel Oleksiy Morozov, on Monday and said his main task was to ensure that only those who see their future tied with Ukraine could join the agency.

He said on Telegram: “And, of course, the agency must be cleared of anyone who chooses not Ukraine for themselves or discredits the state guard service.” The guard service provides security for various governement officials.

Mr Zelensky fired Mr Morozov’s predecessor Serhiy Rud in May, two days after the SBU detained agency employees who it said worked for Russia’s Federal Security Service and leaked classified information. There has been no comment from Moscow on the allegations.

In other developments, Russian missiles killed at least four people and wounded 34 others, including two children, in the eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk on Monday, the regional governor, Vadym Filashkin, said.

“This is one of the largest enemy attacks on civilians recently,” Vadym Filashkin said on Telegram.

Pictures shared alongside his post showed single-storey buildings with shattered windows, damaged rooftops and debris scattered around.

Mr Filashkin said Russian troops launched two Iskander-M ballistic missiles at the town which is about 24 kilometres (15 miles) from the front line. The attack destroyed one private house and damaged 16 more, he added.

One missile struck before, half an hour later, a second, the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s office said in a statement. The attacks also damaged a gas pipeline and cars, it added

Meanwhile, the Kremlin directly blamed the United States for an attack on Crimea with U.S-supplied ATACMS missiles that killed at least four people and injured 151.

Moscow formally warned the US ambassador that retaliation would follow.

Blaming the United States for a deadly attack on Crimea – which Russia annexed in 2014 and now considers to be part of its territory, although most of the world considers it to be part of Ukraine – is a step further than the Kremlin has gone before.

“You should ask my colleagues in Europe, and above all in Washington, the press secretaries, why their governments are killing Russian children. Just ask them this question,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters of the attack.

At least two children were killed in the attack on Sevastopol on Sunday, according to Russian officials. People were shown running from a beach near Sevastopol and some of the injured being carried off on sun loungers.

Russia said that the United States had supplied the weapons, while US military specialists had aimed the weapons and provided data for them.

In Moscow, two people jumped to their death from the top floors of a burning eight-storey former Russian electronics research institute on Monday.

At least six others died in the fire, state-run TASS news agency reported. Black smoke billowed from the building outside Moscow and flames roared up its walls. Some people were trapped on the top floors but were unable to escape.

One man was shown jumping from the upper floor of the building by the Baza Telegram channel. Another, with serious burns, fell from the upper floors, footage published by Shot Telegram channel showed.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.

The EU has agreed to use �1.4bn (�1.2bn) in profits from Russian frozen assets for arms and other aid to Ukraine.

EU governments had already decided in May to use profits from the assets frozen in the EU to help Ukraine, with 90 per cent of funds earmarked for military aid.

But Hungary, which maintains warmer relations with Moscow, has been holding up approval of the necessary legal measures, diplomats say.

Hungary does not give arms to Ukraine and Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban has criticised other EU and Nato members for doing so, saying they are fuelling the war.

At a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg on Monday, chief diplomat Josep Borrell said the usual unanimity for foreign policy decisions was not needed as Hungary had opted out of previous decisions underpinning the scheme.

“Since Hungary didn’t participate in the decision, it is not necessary that they ... participate in the implementation,” Mr Borrell told reporters as he arrived for the meeting.

Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto said little as Mr Borrell laid out the plan, they said.

A Ukrainian startup says it’s on the brink of revolutionizing warfare with an AI-driven drone swarm capable of coordinated attacks on enemy tanks and intelligence gathering, potentially giving Ukraine a significant advantage in its war with Russia, as per The Times’ report.

“It’s the equivalent of bringing the steam engine into the factory all those years ago,” said Serhii Kuprienko, the founder of the startup. “Our core mission is to get robots to do the fighting, not humans.”

These drones can communicate with each other, make decisions on where to attack, and gather intelligence “faster than any human could,” Kuprienko said.

American expert Singer suggests that Ukraine may have already used AI to autonomously destroy targets. He mentions a sophisticated American drone system that identifies enemy vehicles, even if camouflaged, and coordinates automatic strikes.

Singer recalled politicians assuring that this was a line they would never cross but added that it has now been crossed with little controversy.

The ethical debate over autonomous weapons continues among military experts, lawyers, and ethicists, as outlined in the report. Kuprienko repeats the official stance that a human commander must approve each attack. However, he concedes that some commanders might prefer full autonomy to maximize the swarm's effectiveness, adding “We’re fighting a war here, and we want to win.”

Like Bornyakov, he envisions a “kill box”—an area containing only enemy targets—where a swarm could operate independently.

As Ukraine pushes the boundaries of military technology, the world watches closely, aware that this innovation could reshape the landscape of modern warfare.

Brig Gen Ivan Lukashevych, the mastermind behind Ukraine's fleet of naval drones, described the move in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

He said the squads, each with about 10-20 drones, will work in concert to combine multiple separate functions.

"We do have a fleet, but it's divided into smaller elements," Lukashevych told the outlet.

Ukraine was left without a conventional navy in 2014, after Russia's annexation of Crimea.

The move stripped Ukraine of the bulk of its ships and any control of the port of Sevastopol, the headquarters of Russia's much-feared Black Sea Fleet.

In response, and under Lukashevych's direction, Ukraine has developed several types of naval drones.

These include the Sea Baby, credited with damaging the crucial Kerch Bridge last fall, and the Magura V5, six of which hunted down the corvette Ivanovets in February.

Ukraine has also mounted a Grad multiple-launch rocket system on the back of a home-developed Sea Baby drone to hit land targets, as the Financial Times' Christopher Miller reported in May, citing an unnamed official.

The idea of a drone squad replicating the tasks of a full warship is just the latest iteration in Ukraine's rapid development of sea drone capabilities.

Under Lukashevych's direction, Ukraine has notched up a series of successful attacks using naval drones, and along with long-range anti-ship missiles they've destroyed or damaged a large portion of Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

In February, the UK said that 25% of Russia's vessels in the Black Sea had been sunk, damaged, or destroyed. Ukraine puts that number even higher.

As a result of the regular strikes, Russia's fleet has been forced to limit operations out of Sevastopol and moved many of its warships to more distant ports, such as Novorossiysk last fall.

Novorossiysk has notably poorer facilities than Sevastapol, and though the ships are still within cruise-missile striking distance of Ukraine, the time lag allows Ukraine's air defenses crucial time to react, as the Journal reported.

"I wrote a letter to the SBI with a call to open an investigation into one military general who, in my opinion, killed more Ukrainian soldiers than any Russian general," Krotevych wrote in a post on the Telegram channel.

According to the chief of staff, he reported on the situation in the offices, passed on information to "everyone who had the opportunity." Krotevych also stated that he does not care whether an investigation will be launched against him or whether he will be sent to prison.

"Furthermore, when testifying, in those cases on which I cannot speak, I directly declared about, in my opinion, "war crimes", - he declared.

Krotevych added that "all the military now understand" who the person is, "because 99% of the military hate him for what he does."

"The conditions under which the brigades are currently fighting, I will say this, is unreal heroism, first of all, of soldiers, platoon commanders, companies, battalions and brigades. And their heroism is based on the fact that they restrain the enemy not because of it, but in spite of it." - he noted.

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) officially confirmed the receipt of such a statement to the Interfax-Ukraine agency.

"It arrived yesterday, the investigators got to work," the department's press service said.

The SBI did not specify in relation to whom the application was submitted, as it became known, it is about Yuriy Sodol.

The Russian subsidiary of the Chinese state-run Bank of China has stopped accepting payments from Russian banks, the state-controlled media outlet Kommersant reported on June 24, citing unnamed sources.

The U.S. and other countries unveiled a new wave of sanctions earlier in June that targeted Russian financial institutions, as well as entities and individuals based in China and elsewhere that help Moscow circumvent the existing restrictions.

Trade between Russia and China has surged by 121% since 2021, underscoring the Chinese role as Moscow's economic lifeline. A functioning payment system is necessary for maintaining trade relations, and Russia was cut off from the international SWIFT system in 2022.

According to Kommersant's sources, Bank of China will refuse to accept payments from any sanctioned Russian bank starting on June 24.

The problems associated with the suspension of payments will likely "go beyond the banking sector, resulting in the state having less and less control over it, creating rising risks of fraud."

After the new U.S. sanctions were announced earlier in June, the Russian state-run media outlet RIA Novosti published an interview with a Chinese economics expert, who conceded that the sanctions would have a "certain impact on the Russian economy," but claimed that it would not be "serious."

At the same time, Peter Harrell, who served as White House senior director for international economics in 2021 and 2022, said the new sanctions were a "paradigm shift" that could lead to a "major retreat" of the remaining non-Western banks that still do business with Russia.

In the published video, four M270 rocket launchers launch eight ATACMS missiles.

Presumably, the missiles were launched to hit Russian targets in occupied Crimea.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces received these MLRS from the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Italy and France.

At the same time, the French version of the American M270, designated LRU (lance-roquettes unitaire), immediately had software and a modification of the launch platform that allows the use of ATACMS missiles without additional training.

Denmark commits to train 20 Ukrainian pilots.
Around 20 Ukrainian pilots will be trained to fly F-16 fighter jets when the training mission at Skrydstrup Air Base concludes by the end of 2024. This was announced by Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen during a press conference with Norway’s Defense Minister, Bj�rn Arild Gram. Poulsen explained that it will not be possible to continue training Ukrainian pilots in Denmark after 2024, as Skrydstrup’s capacity will be needed for Denmark’s transition to F-35 fighter jets.

Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized that Denmark will still be able to contribute to the training of Ukrainian pilots, but this will happen outside the country’s borders. Currently, some of the training takes place in Romania, but a final decision has not yet been made on how Denmark will contribute to this training effort in the future.

The international training coalition, led by Denmark and the Netherlands, has played a crucial role in educating Ukrainian pilots on the use of F-16 fighter jets. Denmark has also committed to donating 19 F-16 jets to Ukraine, with the first four expected to arrive this summer.

Norway is also committed to supporting Ukraine and has pledged to donate F-16 jets. Additionally, Norway is participating with two F-16 jets in the training of Ukrainian pilots at Skrydstrup Air Base.

During the press conference at the Ministry of Defense in Copenhagen, Troels Lund Poulsen and Norway’s Defense Minister signed a declaration of intent to increase cooperation in defense between the two countries. Poulsen highlighted the potential for closer collaboration between Denmark and Norway, especially regarding experiences with gender equality in the military and conscription. Denmark plans to introduce gender equality in conscription by 2026, while Norway has had this in place since 2015.

Ukrainian troops repulsed a Russian armored attack near the village of Pobieda, Donetsk region.

The 33rd Mechanized Brigade said that the Russian invaders had launched an offensive early in the morning on the Ukrainian border.

For this purpose, the Russian command chose tanks and infantry fighting vehicles, which were equipped with additional protection.

This additional protection consisted of protective grilles and electronic warfare systems installed on the vehicles.

The Ukrainian military spotted the Russian invaders on the move near the occupied town of Mariinka and began to strike.

To destroy the Russian troops, anti-tank missile systems were actively used to stop the vehicles.

“Our ATGM operators worked effectively: they hit five units of equipment. The unfinished armor was finally stopped by drone attacks,” the military said.

“The invaders who tried to take our positions burned brightly on the battlefield,” the brigade noted.

To recap, the 46th Separate Airmobile Brigade is also actively suppressing Russian attacks in the Mariinka sector. On June 20, the paratroopers repulsed a hostile assault attempt in the Mariinka sector.

More than a hundred various drones were destroyed during a missile strike on the training grounds of the 726th Air Defense Training Center in Yeysk, Krasnodar Krai.

As previously reported, the attack on the training center took place on June 21, 2024. The Center trains Russian military personnel to operate reconnaissance and attack drones.

According to the General Staff, a training building and a UAV control center were hit.

According to the Dosye shpiona Telegram channel, instructors and technical staff from the Yelabuga drone factory that produces Geran-2 kamikaze drones were killed at the facility; their surnames are Gunya, Sadreev, and Kazhanov.

There is no information on casualties among the Russian military.

At the same time, analysts from the Astra community reported, citing their sources, that 9 Russian servicemen were wounded in the strike.

According to the source of the Dosye shpiona Telegram channel, 20 Geran-2 kamikaze drones, 50 Lancet drones and 40 Zala reconnaissance drones were destroyed.

On the night of June 24, the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit a long-range space communications center in the village of Vityne. The Center’s full name is the 40th separate command and measurement complex as part of the Titov Main Test and Space Systems Control Center of the Russian Aerospace Forces (military unit #81415). This facility was seized by the Russians during the annexation of Crimea.

OSINT researchers of the CyberBoroshno Telegram channel found out that at least one Krasukha electronic warfare system was located on the territory of this facility, designed to cover command posts and other important Russian facilities.

From a military unit near Yevpatoria, the Russians control the orbital grouping of their spacecraft. In particular, they provide the GLONASS navigation system and space monitoring.

Ukrainian Defence Intelligence Received CB90 Armored Boats

Donors have equipped the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine with CB90 armored boats.

The boats were donated as part of Metinvest’s Steel Front military initiative. The benefactors stated that the three CB90 boats cost UAH 165 million.

“It took us a long time to deliver them here—about six months—but today they have finally been delivered and the guys can perform combat missions,” stated Metinvest representatives.

The soldiers have also been trained to properly own and operate these combat boats.

CB90 boats are designed to perform a multitude of tasks. They can be used for amphibious operations, surveillance, and as patrol boats or special fire support craft.

“The boats are good, very powerful. They will be used to destroy the enemy,” the DIU representative commented.

The CB90 high-speed armored landing craft was developed by the Swedish company Dockstavarvet.

It can also be used for reconnaissance, mining, surveillance, and intelligence data gathering. For the latter, a surveillance radar is installed on board.

The boat is capable of carrying up to 21 marines in full combat gear, or cargo up to 4.5 tons. The troops are placed in the central part of the boat under the wheelhouse and disembark via the bow ramp. Due to its shallow draft, the boat can land on an unprepared shore.

The CB90 is armed with three turrets located behind the wheelhouse and one on each side. They can be equipped with a Browning M2HB 12.7mm machine gun or a 40mm automatic grenade launcher. In addition, the boat can be armed with RBS 17 SSM (Hellfire) light anti-ship missiles for strike or sabotage missions, and can carry four 2.8-ton sea mines or six depth charges.

The combat boat is equipped with two 600 kW diesel engines and two water-jet propulsions, which allow it to perform sharp maneuvers and reach speeds of up to 45 km in shallow coastal waters.

It’s worth noting that the Dutch government is set to deliver several dozen of these boats to Ukraine.

Russian officials blame the West for the slayings, following the same script used after the Crocus City Hall mass shooting in March.

A local official in Russia’s Dagestan region was sacked on Monday after two of his sons were reported to be among the gunmen who attacked religious sites there on Sunday.

Regional Governor Sergei Melikov told journalists that the head of Dagestan’s Sergokala district, Magomed Omarov, had been removed from his post, without giving details on his connection to Sunday’s attacks.

Omarov’s dismissal came as the death toll from the assaults climbed to at least 20 in what Melikov called “terrorist аcts” and a “tragedy for Dagestan and the whole country.”

Police raided Omarov’s home on Sunday evening and took him in for questioning as media reported that two of his sons had been among the gunmen. Omarov also was expelled from the regional chapter of ruling United Russia party, while his profile was deleted from the official website.

Sunday’s attacks targeted two synagogues and two Orthodox churches as well as a police checkpoint in the regional capital Makhachkala and the city of Derbent, a UNESCO World Heritage site on the Caspian Sea.

Among the victims was a 66-year-old Russian Orthodox priest whose throat was slit, according to a local official. The regional Health Ministry also reported that at least 46 people were taken to hospital with injuries.

Three days of mourning have been declared in Dagestan, with large events and television programs canceled across the North Caucasus region.

Sunday’s assault was the second mass shooting in Russia this year, after gunmen in March opened fire on a large crowd in the Crocus City Hall music venue in Moscow. That massacre, which killed 145 people, was claimed by Islamic State.

From exile, Kremlin critics blamed Russia’s security services for being distracted by President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and the political persecution of his enemies instead of thwarting real threats at home.

Russian officials and media, however, used the Crocus attack to serve their own ends, claiming to have found evidence of a “Ukrainian trace.” Ever since Moscow launched its full-scale assault on Ukraine in February 2022, Russian officials and state media have referred to Ukrainians as “terrorists.”

Еarly signs suggest a similar smokescreen might be fabricated this time as well.

Late on Sunday, State Duma Deputy Abdulkhakim Gadzhiyev claimed that Ukraine and unspecified NATO countries “were no doubt behind the attacks” in an effort to “destabilize our country from within” due to what he described as Russia’s success on the battlefield.

In his Monday post, Melikov appeared to convey a similar message, saying: “We understand who is behind the organization of the terrorist attacks and what goal they pursued.”

“The war has come to our homes,” he added.

But some independent analysts suggested the Crocus and Dagestani shootings could presage a descent into the sort of violence common in Russia in the 1990s and 2000s.

“In [events] in the Caucasus, we see another instance of the Russian regime’s loss of control in various places, which come as a surprise to the regime itself,” Alexander Baunov, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center and a former Russian diplomat, wrote in a post on Telegram.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the idea that Russia risks sliding into instability.

“Today’s Russia is different, society is consolidated, the sort of terrorist manifestations we saw in Dagestan are not supported by society, not in Russia nor in Dagestan,” Peskov told journalists on Monday.

While saying it was too early to draw conclusions on who was behind the Dagestani shootings, Peskov bought up a Sunday attack on Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula annexed by Russia. Four people died and more than 150 people were injured there after fragments, likely from a U.S.-supplied missile, fell on beachgoers in the city of Sevastopol, Russian media reported.

“We understand perfectly who is behind it,” Peskov said, telling reporters to ask Europe and the United States why they were “killing Russian children.”

Ukraine Used Prized ATACMS Missiles To Strike Unique Cold War-Era Space Communications Station
The NIP-16 space communications and tracking facility is an intriguing target for a Ukrainian ATACMS strike that may point to its new purpose.

Ukraine struck the NIP-16 Deep Space Communications site in Vitino, Crimea on Saturday, one of two attacks it carried out on the occupied peninsula over the weekend.

Those strikes were carried out by U.S.-made Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) short-range ballistic missiles, Russian and Ukrainian sources claim.

The first attack over the weekend struck a space communications facility where there about 20 radar dishes, with some arrays packing eight dishes combined in giant fixtures. Low-resolution satellite imagery obtained by The War Zone shows that it was indeed attacked. However, the quality of the images makes it is hard to determine the exact extent of the damage. One was taken on June 22, before the attack, and the other after on June 24.

Videos emerged on social media overnight of a large-scale fire reportedly at the space tracking site.

NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) confirms fires were burning there.

The site is now officially known as the 40th Separate Command and Measurement Complex and it is part of the Titov Main Test and Space Systems Control Center of the Russian Aerospace Forces, according to the Ukrainian Militanaryi news outlet.

It was originally built during the Cold War-era to track Russian space launches. You can get a better sense of what it looks like now in this image below.

Construction on the facility began in March, 1960 by 5,000 Russian naval conscripts, according to Russian Spaceweb.com.

“The facility performed its real duty for the first time in February 1961, supporting the mission of the Venera-1 spacecraft,” the publication explained. “The center then played a critical command and control role in all Soviet planetary missions to the Moon, Venus and Mars. From 1967 to 1975, the Yevpatoria site served as the USSR’s main mission control center.”

Control operations for manned missions were moved in 1975, to a newly built facility in Podlipki, near Moscow, just meters away from the campus of NPO Energia, the USSR’s prime developer of manned spacecraft, according to Russian Spaceweb.com. Since then, “it became a backup center for manned space flight.”

After it was seized by Russia following the 2014 takeover of Crimea, it was turned over to its Aerospace Forces, which began the modernization of the facility, the Ukrainian Defense Express news outlet reported.

“As of 2017, reports stated the center had received 10 new systems and the upgrading was still proceeding,” the publication continued. “The initial plan was to spend 1.8 billion rubles on the reconstruction of one radio telescope alone: at the exchange rate of that time, cost about $28 million.”

It is now being “used by Russia for ballistic missile early warning looking towards the Middle East, Africa and Southwest Asia,” the Kyiv Post reported.

However, Fabian Rene Hoffmann, a Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Oslo, suggested a different use.

“I haven’t found anything that indicates that it would serve as a downlink for space-based early-warning satellites, so I assume it plays no role in ballistic missile defense,” he told The War Zone on Monday.

Instead, he suggested that “a plausible explanation appears to be that the site is used for maintaining and controlling Russian satellites, including GLONASS [GLObalnaya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema in Russian] satellites,” the Russian version of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS).

“This makes sense to me and also explains why it would be a priority target for Ukraine.”

Whatever it is being used for, Ukraine clearly thought it was important enough to Russia’s fighting capabilities, or to them just as a strategic asset, to spend precious ATACMS missiles trying to put it out of action.

Last month, we reported that Ukraine attacked a Russian strategic early warning radar site in the southwestern end of the country. It was substantially damaged in a reported Ukrainian drone attack. It appeared to be a first-of-its-kind attack on a site linked to Russia’s general strategic defense.

“As such, it points to a new and worrisome dimension to the conflict, especially when it comes to the potential use of nuclear weapons,” we wrote at the time.

A satellite image taken on May 23 that The War Zone obtained from Planet Labs of the Armavir Radar Station in Russia’s southwestern Krasnodar Krai shows significant debris around one of the site’s two Voronezh-DM radar buildings.

That attack was met with consternation from the Federation of American Scientists, which you can see below.

In the second attack on Russian facilities in Crimea over the weekend, the occupation governor of Sevastopol said at least four people were killed, including two children and 82 hospitalized in a strike that vacationers scrambling from a crowded beach.

The Russian Defense Ministry (MoD) blamed the U.S. for the attack on Sevastopol, a frequent target of Ukraine.

“…a terrorist missile strike by five U.S.-made ATACMS operational-tactical missiles equipped by cluster warheads was deliberately delivered at Sevastopol,” the Russian MoD stated on Sunday. “The alerted air defense units intercepted four U.S.-made ATACMS missiles. The explosion of the fragmentation warhead of the fifth U.S.-made missile in the air led to high number of casualties among peaceful residents of Sevastopol.”

U.S. “specialists input all flight tasks in the U.S.-made ATACMS operational-tactical missiles on the basis of data of the U.S. satellite reconnaissance,” the Mod complained. “That is why Washington is mostly responsible for the deliberate missile strike at peaceful residents of Sevastopol by delivering this weaponry to Ukraine, as well as the Kyiv regime, from the territory of which the strike was launched.”

“Such actions are not going to be left unanswered,” the MoD threatened.

The Pentagon dimissed the acccusations.

“Ukraine makes its own targeting decisions and conducts its own military operations,” Maj. Charlie Dietz, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Monday.

U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy was summoned to the foreign ministry and faced accusations that Washington was “waging a hybrid war against Russia and has actually become a party to the conflict,” Reuters reported The attack, Russia told Tracy, would “not go unpunished. Retaliatory measures will definitely follow.”

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Monday called the strike “barbaric” and accused the US of “killing Russian children,” the BBC reported.

He pointed towards comments by President Vladimir Putin, who recently vowed to target countries supplying weapons to Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials meanwhile blamed the deaths and injuries on a Russian air defense missile.

Meanwhile, Kyiv scoffed at Russian complaints that its civilians were targeted.

“Crimea is also a large military camp and warehouse, with hundreds of direct military targets, which the Russians are cynically trying to disguise and cover with their civilians. Which, for their part, are civilian occupiers,” said Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Mikhail Podolyak.

In the coming days, we will learn more about the damage at the antenna site. Ukraine has been steadily striking Russian air defenses and radar systems on Crimea. This included an S-400 Surface-to-Air (SAM) system taken out last year near the space tracking site. That area of the western Crimean coast is of high strategic value as it provides an ideal place from which to monitor the western Black Sea and the airspace above it that flows into Ukraine. Blinding sensor and air defense systems in this area give long-range drones and missiles a far better shot at reaching their targets.

In response to Ukraine’s long-range ballistic missiles supplied by the U.S., Russia has now reportedly deployed an S-500 anti-ballistic missile-capable system to southern Crimea. With ATACMS still clearly getting through, it appears Ukraine is overcoming the S-500’s capabilities, exploiting its limitations, or striking just outside of its effective anti-ballistic missile range.

The U.S. is expected to announce Tuesday it is sending an additional $150 million in critically needed munitions to Ukraine, as Russia accuses Ukraine of using U.S.-provided munitions to strike inside Russia or Russian-held territory, according to two U.S. officials.

On Monday, Russia summoned the American ambassador to protest what it says was the use of U.S.-made advanced missiles in a Ukrainian attack on Crimea on Sunday that reportedly killed four people and wounded more than 150.

Crimea, which Russian seized from Ukraine in 2014 in a move that most of the world rejected as unlawful, long had been declared a fair target for Ukraine by its Western allies.

However, the Pentagon said last week that Ukraine’s military is also now allowed to use longer-range missiles provided by the U.S. to strike targets inside Russia if it is acting in self-defense. Since the outset of the war, the U.S. had maintained a policy of not allowing Ukraine to use the weapons it provided to hit targets on Russian soil for fear of further escalating the conflict.

The continued flow of U.S. munitions, which will be drawn from existing stockpiles, is intended to help Ukrainian forces repel intensified Russian attacks.

The upcoming shipment is expected to include munitions for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS. That system is capable of firing the longer-range missiles from the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, which Russia has said would prompt retaliation and risk escalating the conflict. One of the U.S. officials said they could not verify whether this aid package included ATACMS munitions, but said the aid did not include cluster munitions.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide details that had not yet been made public.

The package also includes anti-armor weapons, small arms and grenades and the highly sought-after 155 mm and 105 mm artillery rounds, among other support.
