Poland to change aid for Ukrainian refugees starting July 1
As Poland adjusts its support mechanisms for Ukrainian refugees, significant changes will take effect on July 1.

These changes, part of amendments to the Law on Aid to Citizens of Ukraine, will see the ending of several financial benefits that have been provided to Ukrainian refugees since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.

The new legislation will discontinue the one-time allowance of PLN 300 (EUR 69) for basic living expenses and the daily benefit of PLN 40 (EUR 9) for those providing accommodation and food to Ukrainian citizens.

"More and more people are coming to us with a request: help us after July 1. These are often people who have nothing to return to. Until the outbreak of war, they lived in the zone that is now occupied or in the regions directly bordering the front line," said Igor Horków, chairman of the Przemyśl branch of the Union of Ukrainians in Poland.

Horków highlighted the uncertain future facing many refugees, noting that two to five thousand Ukrainians arrive in Przemyśl daily , mainly from heavily shelled regions such as Kharkiv, Odessa, and Sumy.

Why?
The Polish government has justified the cessation of the daily benefit by citing difficulties in maintaining the integrity of the system. There were also increasing concerns about applications being submitted by Ukrainian citizens for people who were actually family members.

As of May, over 950,000 Ukrainians residing in Poland had an active national identification (PESEL) number, with the UNHCR forecasting that this number will reach 1.1 million by the end of the year.

In more than two years of the full-scale war, Poles approach Ukrainian refugees more negatively in almost all measured aspects, except for accepting Ukrainian children to schools, according to a survey by the University of Warsaw and the University of Economics and Humanities in Warsaw published by Rzeczpospolita on June 18.

Around 4.2 million Ukrainian refugees reside in the EU under temporary protection status, of which almost 1 million took shelter in Poland.

Poles welcomed the refugees after the outbreak of the full-scale war, and Warsaw has recently extended their legal stay in the country along with various support programs.

According to the survey, the social benefits for Ukrainian refugees have always been the most problematic aspect, as the vast majority of Poles (95%) believe that they should be reduced.

Only 17% of Poles would accept Ukrainian refugees with the possibility of a long-term settlement, a decrease from 37% more than a year ago. Some 61% of the respondents want Ukrainians to return to their home country after the war.

"Such results are not surprising, they are the result of discrepancies in the perception of foreigners after a longer period of their stay in the country," Jan Brzozowski, head of the Jagiellonian Center for Migration Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, told Rzeczpospolita.

The law, which will come into effect on 1 July, focuses of the extension of the legal stay of Ukrainian refugees in Poland until 30 September 2025.

European Pravda reminds you that Ukrainians who fled the war to the EU are not officially "refugees" because the EU's temporary protection mechanism provides a different legal status. However, this term has become commonly used in Europe regarding Ukrainians.

An M2 Bradley ODS SA infantry fighting vehicle of the Ukrainian 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade has survived an enemy FPV drone strike, as reported by the brigade’s press service.

“On the video, you can see how the IFV operates against enemy infantry. Already on the way back, the FPV drone hits the vehicle. As you can see, the crew did not even feel this and continued moving,” the Brigade states.

The FPV drone hit the Bradley in the front projection, but the combat vehicle did not stop and continued to move.

It is also noticeable that the combat vehicle is equipped with Bradley Reactive Armor Tiles.

More than 300 Russian soldiers have surrendered to Ukraine under the “I Want to Live” project.

Andrii Yusov, a representative of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, stated this during a telethon.

“The number of people willing to surrender has increased. Within the framework of this project alone, more than 300 Russian invaders have already surrendered to Ukrainian captivity,” Yusov detailed.

It is reported that some of them immediately expressed a desire not to be exchanged or even to join the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
