Florida heeft gisteren de stranden deels weer open gegooid. Het ging meteen weer mis met mensen die zich niet aan de regels hielden.

Mississippi 3.974 / 134 per 100.000 - 152 doden / 5 per 100.000
Alabama 4.723 / 96 per 100.000 - 147 doden / 3 per 100.000
Vergeleken met andere staten, b.v. in het noordoosten, doen deze staten het tot nu nog goed tot erg goed. Al zijn ze wel veelal veel minder dichtbevolkt. Maar Florida heeft toch meer dan 21 miljoen inwoners (3e van VS) en Texas heeft er bijna 29 miljoen (2e, na California).
Qua densiteit (bevolkingsdichtheid) staat Florida 13e, dus nog redelijk dichtbevolkt. De andere drie staten staan niet in de top 30.
Laten we de komende weken afwachten wat deze beslissing gaat doen met de cijfers.

Trump gaat tactisch gebruik maken van het feit dat de governors heel veel verantwoordelijkheid hebben. Ongeacht het verloop van de crisis. Als de economie instort, dan ligt dat niet aan hem, en als er juist heel veel doden zijn, dan evenmin. Hij hoeft alleen maar te wachten wat er gebeurt om bij zijn achterban (niet de slimste mensen, of mensen die alleen maar lagere belastingen willen en tegen abortus zijn) te scoren. Hij gaat zichzelf sowieso op de borst slaan.

Maar er zijn ook andere aantallen genoemd (150-200 duizend doden) en de hoogste schatting was 1,5-2 miljoen, dus met een beetje keren en draaien praten ze het wel recht voor het grote publiek.
EDIT: De gouverneur van Texas heeft vandaag of gisteren gezegd: "We moeten de economie open gooien, want er zijn belangrijkere zaken dan leven en dood".
Nou ja, iets in die strekking. Een tijdje terug zei hij nog zo ongeveer dat "de ouderen zich maar moesten opofferen voor de Amerikaanse economie" (niet letterlijk maar het kwam er i.i.g. zo ongeveer op neer) als motivatie om de economie open te draaien.

Daar kunnen ze wel ruimschoots overheen gaan.
Ligt er ook een beetje aan hoe serieus de staten het stuk voor stuk aanpakken, sommige gouverneurs (zowel dems als reps) namen / nemen het niet zo serieus en daar kan je dan nog wel een latere / nieuwe piek verwachten denk ik.
Andrew Cuomo heeft het ook wat onderschat in het begin maar hij heeft wel getoond een leider te zijn als het er op aankomt, denk niet dat iemand het in New York hem aanrekent.

"Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has made news of late for calling Nevada’s coronavirus shutdown “total insanity,” but following a Tuesday cable news interview, it’s Goodman’s sanity that should be questioned.
The Independent mayor made wild health assertions while making her case for a reopening of Vegas during an interview with MSNBC’s Katy Tur, saying, “What I assume is that everybody is a coronavirus carrier — that 100% of our population is asymptomatic, but a carrier.” Goodman continued, “My whole opinion is: get our people back to work.”
Tur asked how that protection can be preserved when an open and successful Vegas means crowded casinos with smokers, people touching slot machines, and breathing recycled air, seemingly making it all more susceptible to the coronavirus.

Goodman then pushed back on Tur’s point that social distancing may have helped limit the number of cases in the state thus far. The unqualified health expert mayor then cited Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has recommended the complete opposite of what the mayor is advocating for, saying that she “defers to what he has said.”

Tur then gave Goodman room to make a heartless and nonsensical extended explanation (that Goodman is wholly unqualified to make) about how Vegas should proceed.
“I am making the assumption that everybody’s a carrier. So let’s go forward, open up the city, open up whoever wants to but do it in a very responsible, cautious way,” Goodman said.

"Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has made news of late for calling Nevada’s coronavirus shutdown “total insanity,” but following a Tuesday cable news interview, it’s Goodman’s sanity that should be questioned.
The Independent mayor made wild health assertions while making her case for a reopening of Vegas during an interview with MSNBC’s Katy Tur, saying, “What I assume is that everybody is a coronavirus carrier — that 100% of our population is asymptomatic, but a carrier.” Goodman continued, “My whole opinion is: get our people back to work.”
Tur asked how that protection can be preserved when an open and successful Vegas means crowded casinos with smokers, people touching slot machines, and breathing recycled air, seemingly making it all more susceptible to the coronavirus.

Goodman then pushed back on Tur’s point that social distancing may have helped limit the number of cases in the state thus far. The unqualified health expert mayor then cited Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has recommended the complete opposite of what the mayor is advocating for, saying that she “defers to what he has said.”

Tur then gave Goodman room to make a heartless and nonsensical extended explanation (that Goodman is wholly unqualified to make) about how Vegas should proceed.

"President Donald Trump threatened to fire Dr. Nancy Messonnier, a top official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, after her blunt warnings about the severity of COVID-19 caused the stock market to plunge in February, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

The Times reported that Trump spent the plane ride stewing in anger over both Messonnier's comments and the resulting plummet of the stock market. He called Azar "raging that Dr. Messonnier had scared people unnecessarily," The Times said.
Trump also threatened to fire her from the CDC altogether, according to The Journal.
That day, Azar tried to fix some of the damage by giving a follow-up press conference, but Trump was still incensed.

Vergelijk het met Groningen. Zijn ze daar beter bezig of slimmer dan in Brabant? Nee, ze hebben (heel kort gezegd) het voordeel gehad dat Brabant eerst een volksfeest/uitbraak had, zodat Groningen wel tijdig kon anticiperen.
Als Groningen nu zegt "Fuck Brabant" en ze gaan heel Groningen opengooien, waardoor Groningen op 143 doden per miljoen inwoners zou komen, dan zou Groningen enorm falen en zou het ook een veelvoud dommer zijn dan Brabant, ondanks het feit dat Brabant dan nog slechtere cijfers zou hebben.
Groningen doet dit gelukkig niet omdat ze niet stom zijn, zoals Trump. De VS had vroeg wat gevallen in januari, heeft eind januari ook bepaalde maatregelen genomen, maar heeft vervolgens in februari helemaal niks gedaan met de gewonnen tijd.
Dat is dus enorm slecht van de VS.
En, als we staten als landen zouden rekenen, dan zouden NY State en New Jersey de landen met de meeste doden (1037 respectievelijk 570) ter wereld zijn.
Wij zijn ook het best te vergelijken met New Jersey qua dichtheid. Wij hebben twee keer zo veel inwoners en een twee keer zo groot oppervlak. New Jersey heeft desondanks al aanzienlijk meer geregistreerde doden.

Wat het eigenlijk alleen maar nog schrijnender maakt.
Is het alleen bij design dat mensen zich soms niet kunnen aanmelden, of is het ook by design dat de toekenningen en uitbetalingen nogal achterblijven in sommige staten (Florida had problemen met uitbetalen las ik deze week)?
