Trump gaat tactisch gebruik maken van het feit dat de governors heel veel verantwoordelijkheid hebben. Ongeacht het verloop van de crisis. Als de economie instort, dan ligt dat niet aan hem, en als er juist heel veel doden zijn, dan evenmin. Hij hoeft alleen maar te wachten wat er gebeurt om bij zijn achterban (niet de slimste mensen, of mensen die alleen maar lagere belastingen willen en tegen abortus zijn) te scoren. Hij gaat zichzelf sowieso op de borst slaan.

“After weeks of diplomatic discussions and procurement efforts, the State of Maryland has acquired *500,000* COVID-19 tests from LabGenomics in South Korea,” Hogan spokesman Mike Ricci tweeted Monday.

"NEW YORK — After feeling unwell with what seemed like symptoms of the coronavirus, Luis Arellano first tried going to a nearby hospital in Brooklyn, where he was told to come back if his condition worsened.
Days later, as his health deteriorated, his family took him to a New Jersey hospital. He waited eight hours, and after being told they’d have to wait another seven to nine hours, the family left, they said.
By the time Arellano, 65, was finally determined to be sick enough to be immediately admitted into a hospital, his body had already been ravaged by COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.
He died of cardiopulmonary arrest on April 5 after five days in the hospital. Two days before that, his virus test had come back positive.
“If they would have admitted him, they would have found that he was gravely ill,” said Bolivar Arellano, his brother.
Luis Arellano’s prolonged attempts to receive care illustrate the quandary nurses and doctors in New York and New Jersey, the two hardest-hit states in the coronavirus pandemic, have faced as they have tried to ration limited resources.
In many cases, health care workers have had to determine in a matter of minutes who was sick enough to receive urgent care in a hospital and who could recover at home. For some patients, the decision was the difference between life and death.
The complicated and still mysterious nature of the virus has made those initial determinations difficult. The condition of a patient whose symptoms might not appear severe at first can deteriorate rapidly."

Elective medical procedures would also resume. By Monday, movie theaters may resume selling tickets, and restaurants limited to takeout orders could return to limited dine-in service.
Republican Gov. Brian Kemp said it was important to allow businesses that had been shut down a chance to get some revenue flowing. Bars, live performance venues and amusement parks will remain closed.

Ik hoor/lees steeds het getal 60.000 overledenen die voorspeld worden in de VS door de modelleurs. Ik zie echter dat de VS nu al op 45.000 overledenen zitten en sinds 14 dagen bijna onafgebroken op >2000/dag zitten. Misschien dat er een razendsnelle afname zal komen van het sterftecijfer, maar het lijkt me dat op korte termijn die 60.000 wel zullen passeren en hier ruimschoots overheen zullen gaan?

Nee, je ziet niets over het hoofd. De 60.000 gaat ruimschoots gehaald worden inderdaad. Zeker nu zuidelijke (meest republikeinse) staten de economie vanaf vrijdag weer deels open gaan gooien (Georgia, Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, Kentucky uit mijn hoofd).quote:

Maar er zijn ook andere aantallen genoemd (150-200 duizend doden) en de hoogste schatting was 1,5-2 miljoen, dus met een beetje keren en draaien praten ze het wel recht voor het grote publiek.
EDIT: De gouverneur van Texas heeft vandaag of gisteren gezegd: "We moeten de economie open gooien, want er zijn belangrijkere zaken dan leven en dood".
Nou ja, iets in die strekking. Een tijdje terug zei hij nog zo ongeveer dat "de ouderen zich maar moesten opofferen voor de Amerikaanse economie" (niet letterlijk maar het kwam er i.i.g. zo ongeveer op neer) als motivatie om de economie open te draaien.

Daar kunnen ze wel ruimschoots overheen gaan.
Ligt er ook een beetje aan hoe serieus de staten het stuk voor stuk aanpakken, sommige gouverneurs (zowel dems als reps) namen / nemen het niet zo serieus en daar kan je dan nog wel een latere / nieuwe piek verwachten denk ik.
Andrew Cuomo heeft het ook wat onderschat in het begin maar hij heeft wel getoond een leider te zijn als het er op aankomt, denk niet dat iemand het in New York hem aanrekent.
