Arctic Monkeys is een Britse indie-rockband uit Sheffield, Engeland en actief sinds 2002. De band bestaat uit zanger/gitarist Alex Turner, gitarist Jamie Cook, bassist Nick O'Malley en drummer Matthew Helders. Tot 2006 was Andy Nicholson bassist van de band.

In 2004 en 2005 kreeg de band bekendheid door het verspreiden van hun demo's via het internet. Dit zorgde voor een mediahype rondom Arctic Monkeys en maakte hun debuutalbum Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not in 2006 het best verkopende debuut ooit in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Evenals het album bereikten de singles "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" en "When The Sun Goes Down" de nummer 1-positie in het land. Een jaar later volgde het tweede album Favourite Worst Nightmare, met leadsingle "Brianstorm". In 2009 verscheen het derde album Humbug, geproduceerd door Josh Homme en James Ford.

De band werd op hun debuutalbum gekenmerkt door hun snelle, agressieve post-punk en Turner's teksten die gebaseerd waren op eigen observaties en ervaringen in Sheffield. Met de komst van hun twee laatste albums evolueerde het geluid meer richting psychedelische- en alternatieve rock.

Alex: 'There are so many. Bonnie & Clyde by Serge Gainsbourg springs to mind! And Johnny Cash obviously has an entire army of crime songs."

Have you ever done anything illegal?
Alex: 'I once stole a 'Dip Dap'. I walked out of the shop immersed in thought and when I came to the next crossing, while I was enjoying my lolly, I suddenly realised that I hadn't paid for it. So I walked back to the shop and kindly paid for it.'

Which AM song is the most criminal?
Jamie: 'The Bad Thing.'
Alex: 'Yes, yes, clearly. But that one's dead and buried.'

Imagine: you're a little fairy and you're skipping through the forest with a little lantern in your hand, when suddenly you bump into three gnomes. One of them's called Eelco and he asks you the way to the nearest brothel. Would you show them the way?
Alex: 'To makes things less complicated I'll assume I know the way. That I'm a clever fairy. But then, since I'm a clever little fairy, I would wisely tell them that it's not about the destination so much as the road leading towards it. This all, of course, neatly in rhymed verse. It's a lesson in life. A 'rite de passage' in the life of a gnome. One should fine one's own way. I might just send them away with a cryptical message, which, when solved, would point them in the right direction. I'm also assuming that the lantern is, in fact, lit. Otherwise I would have to carefully re-think this whole thing.'

What was your first conscious thought this morning or, in your case, afternoon?
Alex: 'I haven't seen daylight for two days, so I'm wondering if I might see some today.'
Jamie: 'That I could well have choked last night. Apparently I fell asleep with my ipod still on and somewhere in the night the wire had wrapped itself around my neck. Then I wondered how many people have already died this way.'
Alex: 'But thinking about that robbery... Eh, I'm not interrupting anything important, am I?'
Jamie: 'No no, I nearly died, but go ahead.'
Alex: 'I think it would be great if we'd name ourselves after members of Black Sabbath. We'd shout stuff at each other, like: "Tony, pass that thing!" and "Ozzy, look out!"'
