WASHINGTON -- The FBI is investigating whether the community activist group ACORN helped foster voter registration fraud around the nation before the presidential election.
A senior law enforcement official confirmed the investigation to The Associated Press on Thursday. A second senior law enforcement official says the FBI was looking at results of recent raids on ACORN offices in several states for any evidence of a coordinated national scam.
Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because Justice Department regulations forbid discussing ongoing investigations particularly so close to an election.
ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, says it has registered 1.3 million young people, minorities and poor and working-class voters -- most of whom tend to be Democrats.
Republican accusations about the group were raised during Wednesday's presidential debate between Democrat Barack Obama and GOP candidate John McCain.
Some ACORN employees have been accused of submitting false voter registration forms -- including some signed `Mickey Mouse' or other fictitious characters.
Those voter registration cards have become the focus of fraud investigations in Nevada, Connecticut, Missouri and at least five other states. Election officials in Ohio and North Carolina also recently questioned the group's voter forms.
ACORN has said the "vast majority" of its workers are conscientious, but some might have turned in duplicate applications or provided fake information to pad their pay. Workers caught submitting false information have been fired, ACORN officials say.
ACORN says laws in a number of states require it to submit all registration cards it collects even dubious ones, so its workers segregate applications with missing, suspicious or false information and flag them so state election officials can quickly check them further.

And the winner of the final presidential debate was … Joe the Plumber.
The suddenly famous Joe the Plumber, whose real name is Sam Joe Wurzelbacher, was invoked 23 times by John McCain and Barack Obama as they battled for the hearts and minds of voters during Wednesday night's debate.
"It floored me. It's not something I expected ever," Wurzelbacher said in an exclusive interview with Diane Sawyer on "Good Morning America." "My son is digging it. It's kind of neat."
Wurzelbacher has become the focal point of the presidential election because of his objections to Obama's plan to boost taxes on people who earn more than $250,000. Ironically, the plumber currently has an income level that would make him eligible for Obama's proposed tax cut rather than the tax increase.
Wurzelbacher said he had a couple of plumbing jobs scheduled for today and hoped he would get more calls before the day was out.
He will need the money. Wurzelbacher's new notoriety has brought to light the fact that he owes nearly $1,200 in unpaid taxes.
"There is a judgment lien against him for nonpayment of income tax," Barb Losie, deputy clerk of the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas, told ABCNews.com. "The state files hundreds of liens a day. It means he owes that money."
Losie said Wurzelbacher owes $1,182 from January 2007, but no action has been taken against him outside of filing the lien.
"There is no judge pulled, there is no attorney assigned... There is a 99 percent chance he doesn't know about the lien, unless he did a credit report or was ready to pay his taxes," Losie said.
A second lien has been filed in the courhouse against Wurzelbacher for $1,261 that he apparently owes St. Charles Mercy Hospital. That lien was filed in March 2007.

ELON, N.C. -- Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said Thursday that God blessed the nation with oil and gas resources and other forms of energy that should be tapped to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign suppliers.
The Alaska governor told supporters at Elon University that she and GOP presidential nominee John McCain will develop new energy sources.
"God has so richly blessed this land, not just with the oil and the gas, but with wind and the hydro, the geothermal and the biomass," Palin said. "We'll tap into those."
Palin said some of the countries the U.S. relies on for energy use their resources "as a weapon." And she said the billions spent each year on oil imports should be circulated within the country "for the sake of the nation's security."
"We need to drill here and drill now," Palin said as the crowd chanted "drill baby, drill." A protester at the back of the crowd shouted "No blood for oil."
Palin has visited North Carolina twice in the past two weeks as McCain's campaign ramps up efforts to defend the state, which has not voted for a Democrat for president since 1976 but is trending toward Democrat Barack Obama this year. Obama is counting on his heavy investment in the state and its bloc of black voters to help turn the tide on Nov. 4.
But Palin remains an asset to McCain in the South, where GOP voters had remained skeptical of him until he put her on the ticket. Nearly a dozen states and the FBI are looking into allegations against the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which is registering voters in swing states. ACORN officials have denied charges of concerted, widespread fraud.

Obama has denied any significant ties to ACORN, and has said the group is not advising his campaign.
