quote:The ATP Finals in London -- and the conclusion of the 2017 tour schedule -- produced the sort of matchup that few casual tennis fans would deign to watch: David Goffin versus Grigor Dimitrov.
Dimitrov, who won the title, is a remarkable, fluid athlete. Goffin is plucky enough. But if you were looking to spot more familiar stars at the O2 Arena, then you were long out of luck. The list of top players who finished the season either newly injured or recovering from injuries has never been longer: Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Nick Kyrgios… the roll call of absentees is seemingly endless.
The only relatively healthy player? That would be 36-year-old Roger Federer, who carefully managed his 2017 schedule, skipping the clay-court season while entering a total of only a dozen tournaments.
There is no mystery here, and never was. The men – and women, for that matter – need to play less often, in order to remain fit enough to compete in the long run. The best players are more vulnerable to fatigue problems, because they go deeper into knockout tournaments and therefore must play more matches.
John McEnroe, among many others, has suggested shortening the season and lengthening the offseason. But that would require the entire elimination of tour stops that will not easily agree to disappear.
Instead, tennis needs to change the way it ranks players, diminishing the need to participate in so many tournaments. It should employ a system similar to the World Golf Ranking, which rewards players for average performance rather than aggregate appearances.
This is more than a subtle, statistical distinction. Back in 1989, golf officials realized that older players such as Tom Watson were faring quite well in major events, yet were being punished in the rankings because they entered fewer tournaments. The result was the average-points concept, a brilliant way of rewarding quality of performance rather than quantity. The bigger events were still weighted more heavily in the average. A minimum of 40 events entered over the course of two years became the divisor in golf, to determine the average.
In tennis, the minimum number of events entered (the divisor) would have to be lower – anywhere from 12 to 15 tournaments per year. A maximum number of entered events would also be set lower, perhaps at 18 (golf sets it at 52, over a two-year period). But the idea would still be the same.
