Hi A.J., how are you? It’s a pleasure to talk to you today.
I’m just fine.

Although I have to say that I didn’t expect to be talking to you this week.
(laughs) I don’t think anybody did! (laughs)

How did you come to be on the show?
Actually, it was kind of a fluke. I was contacted on Myspace. I was going to school in LA and
I got this message, an email from the casting directors. They said, “Do you want to try out for it?” and I thought, “That is hilarious, yes I want to try out for it” because first of all, I had never seen the show before. I’ve never modeled before. I thought, what a hilarious thing to do, basically.

What was your favorite photoshoot?
Probably the cannibal one. It’s pretty obvious I was really excited that they were giving me such a…I guess “scary” is what you would characterize it as. What they thought was scary I thought was awesome. I was excited that there was a naked boy in my cage and blood and meat and stuff. I just thought it was so funny. (laughs)

What was the atmosphere like in the house?
Overall, there were two groups of people: there were the girls I hung out with, and then there were the girls who were just kind of there. I had my friends and we would hang out and cope with it as best we could.

Who were you closest to in the house?
My closest friends were Megg and Caridee. I also really loved the twins and Anchal. But Megg, definitely, number one. She’s my buddy. We have a lot in common and we could tell it immediately. She’s just a very real person.

What with the “Smellrose and Mel Stank” – was there anyone in the house who got along with Melrose?
I don’t know, I think that people will choose their alliances for more than one reason whether they a actually want to be friends or they just want to be political. I’m not really sure. I wasn’t close to Melrose, and I don’t know who she was close to. (laughs)

Who came up with all the names, or was that something that just sprung up from everyone?
You know, I noticed that. I was watching, and they said something like “smellrose” and the way they panned to my face made it look like I said that, but I didn’t say that, someone else said it. I don’t know who was making up those names, honestly. (laughs) Because I don’t do that, so that was disappointing, actually. I saw that, and I was like, “Dude.” (laughs)

Maybe a producer whispered it in there.
Probably. (laughs)

Can you give us your insight into the other women in the house? I’d like to read off their names and you could give me a few words or a sentence about them.
Sure!

Amanda: She’s sweet. She struck me as quiet but I think as I was watching the show last night and seeing what Michelle was mentioning, it’s very easy to close down – I went through it too - and not be completely who you are when you’re in that environment because it is so not reality. It’s reality TV but it’s not a reality you’re used to, so you’re actually kind of forced to become a little bit different than you normally are, and it’s odd. I can understand why people would think she was quiet, but I think she’s a sweetheart.

Brooke: She’s a sweetheart too. I wasn’t close to her, but I thought she was funny. She had a lot of spunk. She struck me as one of those people that in high school I would have just thought, “Oh my God” but she was quite nice. (laughs)

Caridee: Wonderful spirit. She’s just amazing. She’s a great girl and she’s just out there. She’s just really, really great.

Eugena: Didn’t really get close to her. It’s hard to form opinions of people I wasn’t close to, but she struck me as kind of – I guess Tyra wanted to paint her as the girl who thought she was better than everyone, and I sort of got that vibe from her.

Jaeda: Jaeda…again, I didn’t know her that well personally, so it’s hard to comment. I don’t know. (laughs)

Let’s just move on to Megg: Oh, I don’t know what I can say more about her. I just think she’s awesome. Rock n’ roll Megg, love her! (laughs) We’re buddies, we’re great.

Melrose: I don’t know, I think the show wanted to play up a lot but I wasn’t too into Melrose. It wasn’t so much “I hate this girl, she’s making everyone miserable.” I think Melrose has a very good way of portraying herself to the judges, and she’s very good at turning it on when she needs to turn it on. That’s all I want to say about that, I guess.

Anchal: I told her the first time I met her, “You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.” And she needs to remember that. They showed me comforting her when everyone was talking smack about her, and part of that was because I sympathize. I know what that’s like, and it’s okay, we got your back. She’s a sweetheart, she’s a really, really nice girl.

Megan: Megan, I loved her too. She was very real. I was upset that she went so soon, because I didn’t get to experience more of her, but I’ve actually hung out her after the show and she’s a great girl. We went to a show together.

Michelle: Michelle is very outgoing. I like her personality a lot. She’s very funny, just a comedic girl. She always had something funny to say, and I liked her a lot.

Monique: People want to paint her as the ultimate bitch or whatever, but in my opinion, she was just kind of there. She didn’t bother me because she didn’t do anything to me. We all wanted to use the phone, right, so that was annoying, but she just struck me as incredibly immature. Nothing past that. (laughs)

You got J Lo and Marc Anthony…was that any worse or better than what the other girls were given?

I think it was ridiculous that they gave me that. I think it was funny but I also think it was Honestly, how do you play Marc Anthony? J Lo, you have some idea how to portray that, but Marc Anthony? He doesn’t do anything, he just stands there. It was totally awkward and part of it was that I didn’t feel I could play the part because they didn’t make me look the part. They just painted my face, and I looked ridiculous. (laughs)

Was that booty photoshopped or was that all you?

You know what they did? It was hilarious. I think on the show you only saw a split second where I was saying “Ow” and they were doing something with the wedding dress. They shoved a pillow in my butt to make it like J Lo butt, because I have no butt, so that was awesome. (laughs)

So A.J., now that you're eliminated which girl are you rooting for?
Either Anchal or Caridee. Yeah. Definitely.

So what do you think of the Tyra now that you’ve been through this experience?
Personally she was never anything but nice to me to my face so I have no other opinions of her other than the few occasions we got to be with her, and she always struck me as being very open and very nice. I think she’s genuinely trying to give girls a shot at this life, and I respect that. I think that’s very cool.

Is there anything else you’d like the fans to know?
I just want to give a shout out to my supporters. I think it’s awesome and I totally read the support, and I appreciate it.

This week saw the expulsion of Brooke, who bubbled happily through the competition but failed at conveying sadness while she clung to Fabio (yes, that Fabio)’s leg like a recalcitrant toddler. Now, if she’d upped the drama just a tad, maybe there would have been hope for Brooke. What kind of reality show contestant doesn’t want to wipe her panties on people?

Hi Brooke, it’s a pleasure to talk to you today!
Oh, it’s good talking to you to!

I had pegged you to go all the way to the end, so I was surprised at your elimination.
Awww – well thank you, that’s sweet of you. I expected to go a little bit further than I did, but what’s past is past! (laughs)

How did you come to be on the show?
Ironically enough, one of my best friends, Lisa, was the one who wanted to do the show. She looked up all the information and figured out what to do and where to go, and just dragged me along with her. I was only 17 at the time, so technically I wasn’t old enough to be there. But I was going to be 18 by the time the show started filming so they let me audition. One thing led to another, and somehow I ended up in Los Angeles on the show. It was a crazy process.

How far did your friend Lisa get?
She didn’t even make it past the first day, so it was kind of sad. But she’s in L.A. doing her fashion design thing, so she’s living it up.

What did you think of the huge pictures of Tyra all around the house?
(laughs) There were definitely a lot of big pictures of Tyra around the house, and a lot of people were like, “I bet you got so fed up with it” – but it’s her show. She is obviously a great business woman, and has made a name for herself not only as a model but as a business woman. So, it’s her show. She produces it, and I guess she deserves to have those pictures if that’s what she wants. (laughs) And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

Do you think the striptease challenge with Dita von Teese was good preparation for the romance book cover shoot?
I guess if you take it in context, yeah, because they wanted you to be sexy on the cover of a magazine, so they’re going to teach you how to be sexy. I don’t know – sexy is different things to different people. I don’t necessarily consider sexy to be burlesque dancing or stripping or whatever you want to call it. I think it was good preparation, though. I’m game. (laughs)

Who were you close to in the house?
I was actually close to Jaeda, and when I tell people that they’re always surprised, but Jaeda was a comedian. They never showed that side of her on the show, but she was a cut-up, I mean like a complete ham,, the most laid back – we had a really similar background, a similar upbringing, and we got along really well.

I hate when I hear that about one of the girls and they didn’t show it on the episodes, you just have to wonder, why?
I know, I know! I’m hoping that in the upcoming recap episode they’ll show more. We had so much fun. We did impersonations of Tyra, and panel, and just cut up all the time. So I hope that you guys get to see that side of her because she was so much fun.

Absolutely!

A.J.: I didn’t really get along with AJ at first. Actually, I shouldn’t say that I didn’t get along with her, I just didn’t know her that well. She was so opposite of me. I’m kind of the bubbly, loud personality and she sort of kept to herself. A lot of people saw her as the dark, tortured soul, but once we started talking and became friends, I ended up loving her. She became so dear to my heart just because she is such a smart girl, and smart-witted. And she can take a beautiful photograph, so I love A.J.

Amanda and Michelle: They were such sweet girls. Michelle was more the comedian, and Amanda was the quieter, softer twin, but both of them were great. It was really cute to see how close the two sisters were during the competition – I wish I had a twin sister there with me, because they were each other’s support. It was sweet seeing their relationship unfold.

Did you feel like it was an advantage that you didn’t have to have a sister in the competition?
Oh, absolutely! We always gave them a hard time, saying we wished we had a twin sister. It would have been so much more bearable to have someone to talk to about the whole experience, and someone to go through it with you. I wish I had had a twin sister to go through the whole thing with me! (laughs)

Caridee: Caridee was such a character, I loved her. She has a groovy spirit. Very free-spirited, and fun, and loud and energetic. She can take a darn good photograph too, so I just loved her.

Eugena: Oh, people make her seem like she’s so mean, but she was one of the people I was really close to in the house. She kind of told it like it is, and you either liked her or you didn’t for it. I appreciated someone so honest and blunt in the house.

Jaeda: She was a ham, like I said, she was a cut-up and we had a really good time together. She would always talk about how she didn’t know if modeling was what she really wanted. She missed her boyfriend and her family back home all the time. I told her, “Girl, if you have passion for this, combined with your amazing look” – because I thought she was really striking – “you’re really going to go far.” I was always talking to her about wanting it more in the competition. I told her that she has the goods and she’s really got to want it, she’s got to have the passion behind it.

Megg: Rock and roll Megg. She said it just as much as they showed it on the show, if you’re wondering. (laughs) It’s all about rock n’ roll. I wasn’t super duper close to her, but I definitely appreciated her rock and rollness. Game for anything!

Melrose: We were close at the beginning, but I think she wanted to be the mother figure for everyone, and I got sick of it really fast. I think she’s a wonderful model, and I think she knows what she’s doing and does it well – but sometimes,(sounding reluctant) she would really get on my nerves. (laughs)

Hey, that’s nothing. Monique called her a monster.
(laughs) Yeah, I’m not about to accuse anyone of being a monster. All in all, I got along pretty well with all the girls. I never had too much drama, and it was easier that way because I think drama was just a burden when you’re trying to compete and you have drama back at the house, you just want to get away from it.

Anchal: She is such a stunningly beautiful girl. Obviously, I mean, everyone thinks she’s beautiful. So with Anchal, it was just trying to get her to believe in herself. I was like, “Oh, you’re beautiful, you just have to own that, baby!” She was fun, though. She slept right next to me – our beds were right next to each other – so every night we had our little ritual, we would tell each other good night. We were close.

How about Monique?
Monique wasn’t as psycho crazy as everyone makes her sound. She was crazy. She just wasn’t flat out malicious all the time. She did some crazy things, though. I was really grossed out when she wiped her panties on Melrose’s bed because I slept right next to Melrose, too. I remember all that drama unfolding. We were like, “This is so unnecessary, we’re here to model, not to wipe our panties on people and things.” (laughs)

What did you think of Tyra scolding you for saying you missed graduation?
You know, a lot of people took it as Tyra scolding me, but I really didn’t. I think that was her way of saying, “Just be proud of how far you got, no regrets.” A lot of people have said to me, “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe Tyra had the audacity to tell you not to be sad, that you should be happy that you’re here over your graduation;” but I didn’t see it so much as scolding as just, “Be happy you got as far as you did, don’t be sad.” I think she was trying to be nice about it, but it came off in a roundabout way. (laughs)

You mean that’s what you thought at the time? But what did you think when you saw it on television?
I was in California so I actually saw it two hours later than all my friends back home in Texas, and they called me to say, “I can’t believe Tyra said that” -- so I was worried. I thought, “Oh my gosh, is that how it’s going to come off, that I was ungrateful for the whole experience and Tyra was mad about it?” But when I watched it, I didn’t see anything wrong with it. I was genuinely expressing myself that I was sad at how unfortunate it was that I got eliminated on the actual night of my graduation. I think she was just was just trying to say, “Hey, you knew that coming in that you were going to give that up, just be glad that you’re here because there are a lot of girls who wanted to be where you are.” And she was right, you know? I don’t regret anything for a second. I don’t have a regret in the world. Looking back, I had a wonderful time. Getting to go and live the whole Top Model experience – I wouldn’t have traded it. A graduation is a ceremony. I got my diploma, I didn’t need the five hour ceremony. (laughs)

Do you think you’ll get a phone call from Atoosa Rubenstein?
I would love it. I would totally love to hear from Atoosa again. I had the most fun out of the whole experience doing the Seventeen photoshoot. Seriously, that was the highlight of the whole experience for me, just because I think that’s the kind of modeling I was made for, not the high-fashion really edgy stuff, just the fun, commercial, Seventeen kind of stuff. So I would love to hear from Atoosa again!

Can you tell me about your plans in the future?
I’m actually in college right now, my first semester at the University of Texas in Austin. I’m majoring in broadcast journalism. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of modeling opportunities come my way, and hopefully, some do! I’m very open to pursuing modeling if the right thing comes along.

Is it hard to go nearly all the way and then lose so close to the finish?
No, because my goal was not specifically to win the competition. I just wanted to go as far as I could. Making the top three is a big accomplishment, I understand that. I wasn’t sad at all. I’m free right now, I can work with whoever I want to work with, I can do whatever I want to do, I’m not under contract. There’s always a good side and a bad side. The bad side is that I didn’t win the competition, but the up side is that I have complete freedom over my career, and I can take the different avenues that I want to take, and have control over my career. That’s the good part. I made it to the last episode, and that’s a great thing.

You pulled off the CoverGirl commercial so well – do you consider yourself more suited to acting than modeling?
I can do both. Acting and modeling go hand in hand. You can see that the photo shoots we had to do, they were so out of character, they were so outlandish, you really had to come out of yourself to do them. I don’t think I pulled that off so well, but towards the end, I sort of realized that. You’ve got to just put yourself out there – it’s a job, it’s acting, and you’ve just got to do it. The CoverGirl commercial was basically what modeling is all rolled into one, and that’s why it was an easy thing for me. (laughs) If that makes any sense.

What do you think about your “edit”? It doesn’t seem like we got to know you very well on the show.
Yeah, exactly. I would say that being in those situations, where you’re being stripped of everything that makes you an individual, makes you unique as a person, you turn into someone who is just trying to survive and get through the day. And I think that that’s what I turned into. You know what I’m saying? It didn’t bring out the best in me at all — like all those cat-fights, and being sequestered, and being on camera, it didn’t bring out the best in me at all. I’m not an introvert, I’m not serious all the time. I’m very bubbly and happy and fun, all of those things! In that situation it was just hard for me to adapt to it. When I was in that situation, when I was in the competition, yes it portrayed me accurately because that’s the way I was in the competition. But outside, as a person, me as a whole, no, it didn’t portray me—I didn’t come across as Eugena in real life, you know?

Was there any point where you felt sure you were going to be eliminated?
No. There’s always a chance when you’re in the bottom two, but in my heart, I didn’t see myself going home until the top 3, honestly. And I was going to do whatever I had to do to keep from going home. With Brooke, that was a tough elimination for everybody because nobody wanted to see either of us go. I’m sad that she went, but I’m happy that she went, because I got to stay and make it to the top three. That was one of the times where I really thought I was going to go home, but I didn’t feel it in my heart. I had my doubts about it.

What do you think of Tyra after this experience? What can you tell us about her that we wouldn’t necessarily know from watching her on TV?
Tyra is a smart woman. She’s a hard worker, and she’s a professional. She’s knows what she’s doing; she knows her craft, and she knows it well. That’s what I would say about her. I thank her for the opportunity, and I really didn’t get to know her from the TV show because it was a TV show. Everybody wore their masks. So I can’t say, “Tyra’s mean” or “Tyra’s so nice” because I don’t even know her! But I do know that she’s a smart businesswoman, and she does her job well.

Do you resent her for asking if you want to be a model?
You know what, that made me so upset! At the time, that made me so mad, yes! Yes, I kind of did resent her because to me, it was just like, you and the judges talked so badly to me this whole time. I mean, I got the most criticism out of everybody and I didn’t quit, you know what I’m saying? I kept going, I tried my best after each and every challenge and each and every photo shoot I improved and I improved. And all of the sudden at the end you’re asking me if I even want to be here? And I’m like, “I didn’t sit here and catch hypothermia in this cold freezing pool to not be here!” I went through all that stuff, to not even be here? So it’s like my actions should speak louder than my words, but I guess she wanted to hear me say that, or break down and cry and I was not going to do that. I guess it looked like I didn’t want to, but I really did, and I really tried my hardest, I put my best foot forward every single chance I got. So yes, I resented Tyra for saying that because it was a slap in my face, and I didn’t appreciate it.

Anyway, since the previous cycle had an African American winner, I was wondering if you think it gave the two blonde finalists an edge over you.
The question, wow! I haven’t heard that one yet. Honestly, yeah, I did. I did think so. I mean, I knew it was my time to go after the CoverGirl photo shoot. I knew it was my time to go, I knew I was going to be eliminated. Part of it was because Danielle won before, and congratulations to her, and she’s doing a great job and all that – I’m not trying to take anything away from her. But, you know, you have to have variety. You have to have to be diverse in a situation like this where there’s a lot of viewers. I think that although CariDee and Melrose both deserved to be in the top two, because overall their performance was great all the way through, it still did have some type of influence over it.
