quote:18 year old Wigan midfielder Luke Joyce has agreed to stay with Carlisle United following a very successful trial period this week. The central midfielder, who played in both of the Reserve team's very impressive victories recently, will have his scholarship taken over until the end of this season and will sign a 12 month first year professional contract in July.
Joyce signed as a trainee for Wigan in July 2004 and was given a squad number this season, taking his place on the bench for the FA Cup 3rd Round replay at Elland Road and in the Premiership match against Liverpool. The Leeds match went in to extra time with the score locked at 2-2, and Joyce made his only first team appearance when he came on in the 100th minute. A second goal on the night for Roberts and an equaliser from Kelly saw the game go to penalties, with Wigan winning the shoot out 4-2.
Paul Simpson said, "he has played very well and shown good awareness on the ball, and he has definitely done enough for us to want to take it further. We're looking forward to working with him and to getting him involved either this season, or the next."

“Since I’ve been manager here, the first trophy we won was the Cumberland Cup, then there was the Isle of Man Trophy, then we got promotion, which was a big achievement.
“But Sunday is a major final for a football league club, and to win it would be one of the best rewards we could possibly get.
“Swansea are a very forward-thinking team and with players like Robinson, Trundle, Akinfenwa and Britton, they are very attack-minded. But I believe that’s the way the game should be played and I think Sunday will be an open game.
“We know it will be a tough game. Swansea are a very good side. But we are not going there with any fear. We are looking forward to pitting ourselves against a good side from the next level and if we put on a performance like we have in our nine-game unbeaten run in the league, we can get something out of it.
“All the hype that goes before it is very nice and everyone wants to be a part of it.
“But I’ll be making sure the preparation is right, because the game is the important thing. We’ve got to be professional and go and do ourselves justice.”

quote:Simpson to sign as Preston boss
Paul Simpson is expected to become the new manager of Preston North End.
Simpson, 39, joins the Deepdale club from Carlisle and replaces Billy Davis, who has left Preston to become the new boss at Derby County.
Simpson, whose previous clubs include Rochdale, Blackpool and Walsall, is tipped to sign a three-year deal with the Deepdale club.
Preston are expected to unveil the 39-year-old at a press conference on Monday morning.
A statement on the official Carlisle website reads: "The board of Carlisle are disappointed to lose such a good manager as Paul Simpson but we are very grateful for the part he has played at the club and the team's progress made under his management.
"Negotiations between all parties have been amicable and we wish Paul every success in a career which promises and deserves to go far."
quote:McDonald appointed Carlisle chief
Carlisle have appointed ex-Newcastle and Everton midfielder Neil McDonald as their new first-team manager. The 40-year-old was assistant to Iain Dowie at Crystal Palace last season but left his post following Dowie's switch to Premiership outfit Charlton.
Carlisle were seeking a replacement for former boss Paul Simpson who left Brunton Park to take up the Preston vacancy earlier in the month.
McDonald began his coaching career at Preston before joining Bolton in 2000.
The former England under-21 international made a £525,000 switch from Newcastle to Everton in 1988 before joining Oldham four seasons later.

Carlisle United has admitted it got its sums wrong when it proclaimed a 35-year attendance record had been broken.
Saturday's season opener against Doncaster at Brunton Park marked The Cumbrians' return to League One.
As fans celebrated the 1-0 victory, they were further elated by news that the 12,031 attendance was the biggest for an opening game in 35 years.
But it later emerged only 9,433 were in attendance. Officials said season ticket holders had been counted twice.
In a statement, the club blamed an "accounting error".
The statement said: "Carlisle United would like to confirm that the attendance figure was actually 9,433 and not the figure that was announced at the game.
"The initial figure announced was an accounting error, which came about when the season ticket numbers were double counted.
"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

quote:Striker Michael Bridges has ended his relatively short stay at Brunton Park by sealing a deadline day move to Hull City after Carlisle United accepted a £350,000 offer that was tabled this afternoon.
The 28 year old made 31 appearances for the Cumbrians since joining the club, initially on loan, in November 2005. The then Bristol City player was looking to kick start his career by moving back up North, and did just that with a strike ratio of 15 goals in just 25 games last season. Bridges has been used more in a play making role in an attacking front three in this campaign and has been the subject of much speculation in recent months.
Fred Story told us, "we really did want to keep him, but Michael was determined that he wanted to join a Championship club, and we cannot hold him back from realising that ambition. We are not a selling Club, and whilst money is always welcome, we would have much rather have kept the player. However, you can't stand in a player's way and I am happy to thank Michael for his contribution to Carlisle United, and wish him well for the future. We do have a small squad now, but we are in a strong position to bring players in when the loan window opens, and we have committed players and coaches here at the Club, so I am confident that we can move on."
Neil McDonald told us, "it is disappointing, but in the end he was determined to go to a Championship Club, and we only want players here who want to play for this football Club. We will be looking to bring players in when the emergency loan window opens next Thursday, and that is ongoing, but we aren't just going to go out there and get anybody. It has to be the best that we can get and players who will improve the squad that we have."
quote:Carlisle's Murray joins Torquay
Torquay have signed 25-year-old Carlisle midfielder Adam Murray. The former Derby player, who requested a transfer during pre-season and has not featured for Neil McDonald's team this season, cost the Gulls £10,000.
"I must admit I'm surprised that the chairman has stuck his neck out financially," Torquay boss Ian Atkins told the club's website. But Adam will make a big difference to us. He has played at a high level and the quality will show on the pitch."
The midfielder has been at Brunton Park since March 2005 and has also had spells with Mansfield, Kidderminster, Notts County and Burton Albion.

The second is the injury-time winner scored by goalkeeper Jimmy Glass against Plymouth that saved the club from relegation to the Conference, in the 1998-1999 season.
The third, arguably, is Carlisle's recent promotion to League One, under the guidance of former boss Paul Simpson.
The latter was a tremendous achievement considering the Brunton Park side had only just regained their League status the previous season.
quote:Midfielder Paul Thirlwell has joined Carlisle United today on a 93 day loan that will see him play for Carlisle until the middle of December.
The 27 year old, who joined Derby County in August last year, has made 23 appearances for the Rams since his move from Sheffield United.
He initially started his career at Sunderland, making 77 first team appearances, and enjoyed a loan spell with Swindon prior to signing for the Blades in the summer of 2004.
Neil McDonald told us, "this is a player who has played at a decent level for a number of years and he will be an excellent addition to our squad. We are looking forward to working with him and we're sure that this will be a good move, both for him and for Carlisle United." (CUFC)

Carlisle United assistant manager Greg Abbott has been fined £250 and warned as to his future conduct by the Football Association. Abbott had admitted an FA charge of using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official at Carlisle's game at Northampton on 13 January.
Cumbrians boss Neil McDonald criticised the officials after the 3-2 defeat, claiming they were "all rubbish". McDonald felt two of Northampton's goals should have been disallowed.
