Club in attendance record gaffe
Carlisle United has admitted it got its sums wrong when it proclaimed a 35-year attendance record had been broken.

Saturday's season opener against Doncaster at Brunton Park marked The Cumbrians' return to League One.

As fans celebrated the 1-0 victory, they were further elated by news that the 12,031 attendance was the biggest for an opening game in 35 years.

But it later emerged only 9,433 were in attendance. Officials said season ticket holders had been counted twice.

In a statement, the club blamed an "accounting error".

The statement said: "Carlisle United would like to confirm that the attendance figure was actually 9,433 and not the figure that was announced at the game.

"The initial figure announced was an accounting error, which came about when the season ticket numbers were double counted.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Striker Michael Bridges has ended his relatively short stay at Brunton Park by sealing a deadline day move to Hull City after Carlisle United accepted a £350,000 offer that was tabled this afternoon.

The 28 year old made 31 appearances for the Cumbrians since joining the club, initially on loan, in November 2005. The then Bristol City player was looking to kick start his career by moving back up North, and did just that with a strike ratio of 15 goals in just 25 games last season. Bridges has been used more in a play making role in an attacking front three in this campaign and has been the subject of much speculation in recent months.

Fred Story told us, "we really did want to keep him, but Michael was determined that he wanted to join a Championship club, and we cannot hold him back from realising that ambition. We are not a selling Club, and whilst money is always welcome, we would have much rather have kept the player. However, you can't stand in a player's way and I am happy to thank Michael for his contribution to Carlisle United, and wish him well for the future. We do have a small squad now, but we are in a strong position to bring players in when the loan window opens, and we have committed players and coaches here at the Club, so I am confident that we can move on."

Neil McDonald told us, "it is disappointing, but in the end he was determined to go to a Championship Club, and we only want players here who want to play for this football Club. We will be looking to bring players in when the emergency loan window opens next Thursday, and that is ongoing, but we aren't just going to go out there and get anybody. It has to be the best that we can get and players who will improve the squad that we have."

Carlisle's Murray joins Torquay

Torquay have signed 25-year-old Carlisle midfielder Adam Murray. The former Derby player, who requested a transfer during pre-season and has not featured for Neil McDonald's team this season, cost the Gulls £10,000.

"I must admit I'm surprised that the chairman has stuck his neck out financially," Torquay boss Ian Atkins told the club's website. But Adam will make a big difference to us. He has played at a high level and the quality will show on the pitch."

The midfielder has been at Brunton Park since March 2005 and has also had spells with Mansfield, Kidderminster, Notts County and Burton Albion.
