“Toni? He is a great player and at this moment he is the best forward in the League,” stated the 34-year-old.

“I see him making a great partnership with Francesco Totti in the national team,”

Chiesa also lamented the effect injuries had on his own international career. “I had bad luck when I was injured at one of my better points in my career at Fiorentina,” he said.

“Missing the World Cup in Japan and South Korea is my one great regret.”

The former Sampdoria, Parma and Lazio man was also full of praise for his teammates. “I don’t feel like a phenomenon, the squad are what makes things work for me,” he added.

“The secret of the job is carried out during the week on the training pitch.”

Ferruccio Valcareggi, the coach who led Italy to success at the 1968 UEFA European Championship, died today at the age of 86.

Respected coach
After a successful playing career with his hometown club US Triestina Calcio and ACF Fiorentina, Valcareggi coached the Azzurri between 1966 and 1974, leading them to European glory in 1968 as well as the runners-up slot at the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

Replay success
Appointed as Italy coach immediately after the Azzurri's early elimination by North Korea in the 1966 FIFA World Cup, Valcareggi led the Italian team to their first European crown two years later, beating Yugoslavia 2-0 in a replay, after the first final between the two sides ended 1-1.

Memorable victory
Two years later, Italy lost 4-1 to Brazil in the World Cup final after one of the most memorable games in footballing history, their 4-3 win against West Germany in the semi-finals. Under Valcareggi's guidance, the Azzurri lost just six games in eight years.

High praise
"I shared with Valcareggi my best memories in the Azzurri shirt," said former Italy left-back Giacinto Facchetti. "I was the team captain and we had a great relationship. It's a pity that we did not manage to win the World Cup in 1970 but our semi-final against Germany will always be one of the best moments in the history of Italian football."

'Most loved'
Gianni Rivera added: "Italy achieved great results under Valcareggi. He was mostly a champion as a human being. Everyone in the team had a fantastic relationship with him. That's why that national team was probably the most loved ever by Italian fans.”

Milan welcome Brescia in the opening tie of the Coppa Italia Fourth Round on November 29, while Fiorentina-Juve is on December 1.

The big clubs enter the fray in the last 16 and face some tough tests if they wish to progress in the competition.

Berlusconi reveals bomb threat

Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi claims to have been targetted by a suicide bomber in a football stadium.

Berlusconi, who is also the Italian Prime Minister, revealed in an interview with Conservative newspaper Libero that the threat on his life happened at a football match.

“I am the subject of a direct threat," he said on Friday. “A suicide bomber in a stadium aiming at me."

Mr Berlusconi, who was present at the San Siro on Saturday night to watch his side beat Juventus, didn’t reveal where the incident took place but did express concerns that Italy may soon be the subject of terrorist attacks.

Ever since Italy sent troops to Iraq following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, many Italians have feared an attack on their country.

Berlusconi, who has always rejected this theory in the past, now seems genuinely concerned for both his own safety and that of his fellow countrymen.

"It's not about me,” he continued. “This is about Italy. We are exposed to deadly terrorist attacks."

Tellingly, Berlusconi claimed on television recently that he tried to dissuade US President George Bush, whom he is due to meet tomorrow, from invading Iraq.

In addition to stating that he never wanted war in the first place he also urged that his words be heard across the Arab world.

These are troubles times for Italy’s foreign office, which is also experiencing deteriorating diplomatic ties with Iran, whom they have requested be ejected from the UN over remarks by its {resident, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that Israel be “wiped off the map”.

With the Winter Olympics set to take place in Turin early next year fears are growing that the event may be chosen as a terrorist target.

Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti has not given up on controversial striker Antonio Cassano remaining at the club and has vowed to play him again.

Cassano, who has had numerous run-ins with the Giallorossi over his contract situation, seems destined to leave Rome for either Juventus or Inter in January after barely featuring in the side this term.

But Spalletti, speaking at Italy’s national training headquarters in Coverciano where he was awarded the Golden Bench award for best Coach of 2004-05, insisted on Monday that Cassano is not a lost cause.

"I think we can resolve the Cassano problem," he said. "We are evaluating every possible solution every day.

"I am thinking about playing him," added the former Udinese tactician. "A player like Cassano is a prize asset to any side, even Roma.

"We remember what it was like with Cassano in the side and there are still a few weeks to go and a few matches to play (before the January transfer window).

"Obviously, much depends on what sort of form he is in."

These comments come in stark contrast to those of the club, who said only last week that Cassano had burnt his bridges with Roma once and for all.

"The Cassano case is closed," said club secretary Rosella Sensi, reiterating her stance of October 19 when she went so far as to launch a personal attack on the Bari-born 23-year-old.

"He is a liar and I refuse to talk to somebody that changes his story from one day to the next," she had declared.

Cassano’s current contract expires in June 2006 and the Ł20m signing could leave on a free transfer if no renewal is agreed.

There are early signs that the feud between Antonio Cassano and Roma is coming to an end.

Cassano - who has been at loggerheads with the outfit over his contract negotiations - has been out of the side for most of the season, but it now seems that there may be a calming of the waters between the player and his club.

The Bari-born forward’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but the Giallorossi have so far refused to agree to the 23-year-old’s financial terms to sign an extension.

It now appears that Cassano is prepared to backtrack slightly from his initial request of Ł2.7m a year to Ł2.16m and agree to a minimum release fee clause in a new agreement of between Ł10m and Ł12m.

Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti stated on Monday that he was keen to restore the player to the side.

However, any new contract agreement is only really seen as a move to ensure that the club receive payment for the player when he almost certainly moves on in January – probably to Juventus.

Inter have also been associated with the Ł20m investment who left Bari for the capital in the summer of 2001.

Treviso have officially sacked Coach Ezio Rossi and handed the reins of the newly promoted squad to former Lecce and Fiorentina boss Alberto Cavasin.

It is a return to the Stadio Omobono Tenni for the tactician, who had already played for his hometown club and acted as Coach between 1990 and 1993.

The 49-year-old will be joined by Gianni Bortoletto and fitness Coach Daniele Farnedi, while goalkeeping trainer Paolo De Toffol and assistant manager Albino Pillon remain in their jobs. Cavasin's contract expires at the end of this season.

There had already been newspaper talk of Cavasin’s appointment over the last couple of weeks and Sunday’s 0-0 draw away to Cagliari proved enough to sack Rossi and fitness Coach Andrea Bellini. The club had denied a dismissal was imminent, but this evening the official confirmation came through.

Rossi had helped Treviso to their first promotion into Serie A in the summer, although it was only confirmed after Genoa and Torino were demoted due to a match-fixing scandal and bankruptcy respectively.

Juventus are reportedly planning a raid for three Ajax players, with Maxwell, Hatem Trabelsi and Nigel de Jong all targets for the Turin club.

After the successful signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Ajax, it seems that Juve are ready to go Dutch again, having set their sights on no fewer than three of his former teammates.

Director general Luciano Moggi spent nearly Ł11m on the rangy Sweden striker in 2004, but is renowned for his determination to maintain a healthy balance sheet at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

Maxwell, Trabelsi and de Jong are all out of contract at the end of the season and it seems that Moggi is keen to snap them all up at give-away prices.

Left-sided full-back Maxwell has long been coveted by the Bianconeri and his is thought to be a done deal with a four-year agreement worth Ł1.7m a season already in place.

Trabelsi, who operates on the opposite flank and can also play on the right wing, will be of particular interest once he receives European citizenship in January.

He is expected to replace Jonathan Zebina, whose list of bizarre injuries and excessive wage demands have left him out of favour with La Vecchia Signora.

De Jong is a highly-rated midfielder whose father played for Holland. It is thought he has also agreed a move to Turin, where he may have to fight for a place with Cristiano Zanetti.

The latter, who is out of favour at Inter, is also near the end of his contract and is held in great esteem by boss Fabio Capello given their past together at Roma.

German champions Bayern Munich are planning a January raid for Fiorentina star Luca Toni, according to reports in Italy.

The Viola’s top marksman has got off to a fantastic start to the season with his new club, scoring 13 Serie A goals already and also proving a big hit with the Italian national side.

Now it seems that Toni’s goalscoring feats have attracted the interest of Bayern boss Felix Magath, who is primed for a January swoop on the former Brescia and Palermo man.

Should the burly Modena-born centre-forward leave for Bavaria, Fiorentina fans will be up in arms, with the club already beginning to backtrack on public promises to bring in new signings in January.

Viola dismiss New Year signings

Fiorentina have announced that they are unlikely to make any new signings in the January transfer window.

Speaking on Italian television programme Diretto Stadio, Pantaleo Corvino told viewers that it would be problematic to bring in reinforcements in the New Year.

"It will be very difficult to make important signings in January," said the outfit’s sporting director. "Clubs simply won’t release players."

The news will come as a huge blow to supporters of the Tuscan side, whose President Andrea Della Valle has repeated over recent weeks that funds will be made available to Coach Cesare Prandelli after Christmas.

Robert Pires, Cristiano Zanetti and even Antonio Cassano have been linked with a move to the Stadio Artemio Franchi, but it now seems that Serie A’s third-placed side will be putting their cheque-book away.

"We will try to make a move if the opportunity presents itself," added Corvino. "But only if it is worthwhile. Certain transfers could cause unrest in the dressing room."

If the latter statement suggested a move for Cassano was not in the club’s plans, the following one confirmed as much unequivocally.

Spartak Moscow ace Nemanja Vidic is on the verge of completing his January move to Fiorentina.

The highly-rated defender has been strongly linked with the high-flying Viola and his agent has confirmed that a switch is possible.

"I prefer to wait before announcing that a deal is done because nothing is concrete at the minute," Silvano Martina told Radio Fiorentina.

"However, there is a good chance that the transfer will be completed. Vidic is a rare talent, a young defender who is unbeatable in the air, has great technique and can start moves.

"He does seem slow but he is almost impossible to get past. He would be a guarantee for the Viola defence."

However, Palermo and Liverpool have also been associated, while his asking price of around Ł5m may prove problematic.

Vidic may not be the only new arrival at the Stadio Franchi in the New Year, given the club’s search for a new midfielder.

Ternana ace Jimenez, a Chilean international, is rumoured to have been targeted this week with an offer.

Inter fans in racist incident

Messina’s Marco Andre Zoro has explained why he threatened to walk off the field after he was hit by racist abuse from travelling Inter fans.

“I don’t want to grab headlines, but I will not accept people coming to my home stadium to insult me,” slammed the Ivory Coast international.

The defender picked up the ball and demanded action from the fourth official on the 66th minute of today’s 2-1 home defeat to Inter.

He threatened to walk off the pitch if the offensive monkey chants continued, but was convinced to reconsider by Adriano and Obafemi Martins, who also appealed to the supporters to stop.

“We are not animals – we are people who love sport and give everything for our teams,” continued Zoro. “I understood Martins and Adriano trying to keep me on the pitch and they told me not to give those fans the satisfaction. I only accepted because it was a shame to call off the game and ruin Inter’s result through no fault of my colleagues. The club has nothing to do with these people who decide to travel hundreds of miles just to insult someone.”

The Nerazzurri have hit the headlines this week after newspaper ‘La Padania’ accused the club of losing its Italian spirit by fielding an entirely foreign line-up against Artmedia Bratislava in the Champions League.

“They can do what they like in their own home, but not when they come to my city,” added the defender. “These things often happen to me, but this time I just couldn’t keep calm.”

Inter President Giacinto Facchetti personally apologised to Zoro and an inquest has been opened into this shameful incident, so the club could be given a heavy fine or even forced to play on neutral turf.

“On behalf of the club, I apologise to Zoro,” noted Facchetti. “Unfortunately, these things happen all too often, but Inter have always tried to battle racism.”

Nerazzurri Coach Roberto Mancini also added: “If Zoro had walked off the pitch, he would’ve given the moral victory to the couple of idiots who always seem to find a way in.”

Helaas wegens de overgrote dreiging van rellen verplaatst naar 15.00 uur ipv 21.00 uur.
Stadion uitverkocht, worden maar weinig Roma fans verwacht, ca. 1000, er is namelijk afgeraden naar Napoli te reizen ivm de angst voor rellen.

De ontmoeting heeft iig een historie van (soms zeer extreme) rellen en de beide supporterskernen staan ook niet erg best te boek.

Serie A minnows Livorno have decided to retire their No 10 shirt in honour of former fan favourite Igor Protti.

The striker, who netted 144 goals in all competitions for the outfit, decided to hang up his boots at the end of last season.

President Aldo Spinelli was instrumental in the move and an official ceremony will take place before Sunday’s match against Lazio – one of Protti’s former clubs.
