Siena striker Enrico Chiesa has hailed Fiorentina’s Luca Toni as the best hitman in Serie A.

The two striker’s lead the way in the Serie A scoring charts, Toni with 12 goals and Chiesa with 8.

But the man who once played for Fiorentina – currently the leading active scorer in Serie A – sees his Tuscan rival as a cut above the rest of the field at present.

“Toni? He is a great player and at this moment he is the best forward in the League,” stated the 34-year-old.

“I see him making a great partnership with Francesco Totti in the national team,”

Chiesa also lamented the effect injuries had on his own international career. “I had bad luck when I was injured at one of my better points in my career at Fiorentina,” he said.

“Missing the World Cup in Japan and South Korea is my one great regret.”

The former Sampdoria, Parma and Lazio man was also full of praise for his teammates. “I don’t feel like a phenomenon, the squad are what makes things work for me,” he added.

“The secret of the job is carried out during the week on the training pitch.”

Ferruccio Valcareggi, the coach who led Italy to success at the 1968 UEFA European Championship, died today at the age of 86.

Respected coach
After a successful playing career with his hometown club US Triestina Calcio and ACF Fiorentina, Valcareggi coached the Azzurri between 1966 and 1974, leading them to European glory in 1968 as well as the runners-up slot at the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.

Replay success
Appointed as Italy coach immediately after the Azzurri's early elimination by North Korea in the 1966 FIFA World Cup, Valcareggi led the Italian team to their first European crown two years later, beating Yugoslavia 2-0 in a replay, after the first final between the two sides ended 1-1.

Memorable victory
Two years later, Italy lost 4-1 to Brazil in the World Cup final after one of the most memorable games in footballing history, their 4-3 win against West Germany in the semi-finals. Under Valcareggi's guidance, the Azzurri lost just six games in eight years.

High praise
"I shared with Valcareggi my best memories in the Azzurri shirt," said former Italy left-back Giacinto Facchetti. "I was the team captain and we had a great relationship. It's a pity that we did not manage to win the World Cup in 1970 but our semi-final against Germany will always be one of the best moments in the history of Italian football."

'Most loved'
Gianni Rivera added: "Italy achieved great results under Valcareggi. He was mostly a champion as a human being. Everyone in the team had a fantastic relationship with him. That's why that national team was probably the most loved ever by Italian fans.”

Coppa Italia: Calendar drawn up

Milan welcome Brescia in the opening tie of the Coppa Italia Fourth Round on November 29, while Fiorentina-Juve is on December 1.

The big clubs enter the fray in the last 16 and face some tough tests if they wish to progress in the competition.

This stage is made up of two legs, home and away, but so far the League has only confirmed the dates of the first legs.

Reigning Coppa Italia holders Inter travel to Parma’s Stadio Tardini on the evening of November 30 to defend their title.

Berlusconi reveals bomb threat

Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi claims to have been targetted by a suicide bomber in a football stadium.

Berlusconi, who is also the Italian Prime Minister, revealed in an interview with Conservative newspaper Libero that the threat on his life happened at a football match.

“I am the subject of a direct threat," he said on Friday. “A suicide bomber in a stadium aiming at me."

Mr Berlusconi, who was present at the San Siro on Saturday night to watch his side beat Juventus, didn’t reveal where the incident took place but did express concerns that Italy may soon be the subject of terrorist attacks.

Ever since Italy sent troops to Iraq following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime, many Italians have feared an attack on their country.

Berlusconi, who has always rejected this theory in the past, now seems genuinely concerned for both his own safety and that of his fellow countrymen.

"It's not about me,” he continued. “This is about Italy. We are exposed to deadly terrorist attacks."

Tellingly, Berlusconi claimed on television recently that he tried to dissuade US President George Bush, whom he is due to meet tomorrow, from invading Iraq.

In addition to stating that he never wanted war in the first place he also urged that his words be heard across the Arab world.

These are troubles times for Italy’s foreign office, which is also experiencing deteriorating diplomatic ties with Iran, whom they have requested be ejected from the UN over remarks by its {resident, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that Israel be “wiped off the map”.

With the Winter Olympics set to take place in Turin early next year fears are growing that the event may be chosen as a terrorist target.

Ballardini was the Sardinian club’s third boss of the campaign after the dismissal of Attilio Tesser and the resignation of Daniele Arrigoni.

Cagliari, who are in deep relegation trouble, could now turn to veteran tactician Carlo Mazzone.

Spalletti: I’ll play Cassano

Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti has not given up on controversial striker Antonio Cassano remaining at the club and has vowed to play him again.

Cassano, who has had numerous run-ins with the Giallorossi over his contract situation, seems destined to leave Rome for either Juventus or Inter in January after barely featuring in the side this term.

But Spalletti, speaking at Italy’s national training headquarters in Coverciano where he was awarded the Golden Bench award for best Coach of 2004-05, insisted on Monday that Cassano is not a lost cause.

"I think we can resolve the Cassano problem," he said. "We are evaluating every possible solution every day.

"I am thinking about playing him," added the former Udinese tactician. "A player like Cassano is a prize asset to any side, even Roma.

"We remember what it was like with Cassano in the side and there are still a few weeks to go and a few matches to play (before the January transfer window).

"Obviously, much depends on what sort of form he is in."

These comments come in stark contrast to those of the club, who said only last week that Cassano had burnt his bridges with Roma once and for all.

"The Cassano case is closed," said club secretary Rosella Sensi, reiterating her stance of October 19 when she went so far as to launch a personal attack on the Bari-born 23-year-old.

"He is a liar and I refuse to talk to somebody that changes his story from one day to the next," she had declared.

Cassano’s current contract expires in June 2006 and the £20m signing could leave on a free transfer if no renewal is agreed.
