De volgende Hendrix CD die ik ga aanschaffen is First Rays Of The New Rising Sun.

-freedom
-ezyrider
-my friend
-angel
-room full of mirrors
-drifting

van de meeste nummers op deze cd zijn toch de live versies beter luister maar naar rainbow bridge cds early en late concert die ezyrider,in from the storm, dolly dagger, freedom.new rising sun klinken gewoon veel beter

Freedom
recorded: Electric Lady studio's June 25, 1970; July 14, 19, 1970, august 14, 20, 1970
Engineer: Eddie Kramer

Mixed by Jimi Hendrix an Eddie Kramer
Electric Lady studio's, august 24 1970
originally issued as part of The Cry Of Love

A staple of the 1970 U.S. and European tours, the basic track for Freedom was recorde june 25 1970. After some final adjustments to the song's arrangement, particularly te repositioning of the bass guitar during the introduction, a lively sitxh take yielded the master. "Originally, all Jimi had was just that opening riff," remembers Billy Cox. "I remember him playing it to me at his apartment during the time of the Band of Gypsys. We spent a lot of time working that song out before we finally recorded is at Electric Lady."

Had Electric Lady been ready to accomodate them, the group might have finished Freedom one month earlier. When technical problems at the new studio forced Hendris an company to the Record Plant on May 14 and 15, the Experience came close to achieving a master take. intent on maximizing the superior sound of his new facility, Hendrix set aside his earlier effort and called for new takes on June 24, and again on the 25th before his satisfaction was complete.

While Hendrix prepared a mix of Freedom on august 24, the song fell just short of completion. According to Eddie Kramer, Jimi intended to replace a rhythm guitar guide track, recorded July 19, and lasting from 2.22 until 2.30 on the master, with a final guitar overdub, but he passed away before he could complete the work

The New York Session en Woke up this Morning o.a.

quote:
EXPERIENCE HENDRIX TO RELEASE JIMI HENDRIX: LIVE AT WOODSTOCK [THE DELUXE EDITION] ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2005
SOURCE: Experience Hendrix, L.L.C.
DATE: July 14, 2005

SEATTLE, WA (July 14, 2005) - Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. in association with Universal Music Enterprises is pleased to announce the release of Jimi Hendrix: Live At Woodstock [The Deluxe Edition] on September 13, 2005.

This special two-disc DVD presentation of Jimi Hendrix: Live At Woodstock stands as the definitive record of one of Jimi's most celebrated performances. This all-new deluxe set features all of the existing film footage from Jimi's unforgettable August 1969 Woodstock concert newly re-edited and presented uninterrupted and in its original performance sequence. Live At Woodstock includes never-before-seen versions of "Foxey Lady," "Message To Love," "Hey Joe," "Spanish Castle Magic," and "Lover Man," and an all-new 5.1 and 2.0 stereo soundtrack mixed by Eddie Kramer, Jimi's original studio engineer.

Where 1994’s original VHS [and subsequent DVD] release of Hendrix’s Woodstock performance ran for only 57 minutes, Experience Hendrix has teamed with Warner Bros. to restore all of the existing film footage from Hendrix's legendary Woodstock performance. This new edition was entirely re-edited by Jere Huggins, one of the original editors of the 1970 Academy Award winning Woodstock documentary. Huggins worked extensively with Experience Hendrix's Janie Hendrix and John McDermott, as well as noted Warner Bros. film restoration specialist Bill Rush to incorporate a variety of previously unseen camera angles and coverage. Rush has been involved in the careful, critically acclaimed restoration of many classic films, including Public Enemy, Casablanca, and Out Of The Past. The result is a frame by frame digital restoration that presents Hendrix in vibrant color and detail.

In addition to the full-length feature Live At Woodstock, this deluxe two DVD collection features a multitude of special bonus features including:

THE ROAD TO WOODSTOCK
A new documentary featuring Hendrix performance footage and new interviews with Woodstock promoter Michael Lang, and Hendrix band members Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, Larry Lee, and Juma Sultan among others.

JIMI HENDRIX: LIVE AT WOODSTOCK:
A SECOND LOOK
In addition to the newly re-edited color footage featured on DVD one, A Second Look offers a totally unique perspective of Jimi's Woodstock performance that has never before been shared. A Second Look combines never before seen black and white video footage of Jimi’s legendary Woodstock performance intercut with alternate camera angles filmed in color.

A Second Look features uninterrupted footage of every performance featured on DVD One in its original performance sequence. In addition, A Second Look presents never before seen video footage of “Hear My Train A Comin’”--a performance missed by the film crew and presented here for the very first time.

JIMI HENDRIX PRESS CONFERENCE:
Filmed at Frank’s Restaurant, Harlem on September 3, 1969 two weeks after Woodstock. At a press conference called to announce his upcoming benefit performance on behalf of the United Block Association, a Harlem based youth organiziation, Jimi spoke about the festival and his memorable rendition of “Star Spangled Banner”.

NASHVILLE ROOTS
Band members Billy Cox and Larry Lee recall their friendship with Jimi Hendrix and their shared journey from the fabled R&B 'chitlin circuit' to the greatest rock festival ever conceived.

RECORDING WOODSTOCK:
Engineer Eddie Kramer details the recording of the entire epic festival.

RARE ARTIFACTS & MEMORABILIA:
Collection includes original Woodstock poster, festival tickets, and Hendrix's own handwritten set list draft, and poem about the festival, "500,000 Halos."

Jimi Hendrix: Live At Woodstock [The Deluxe Edition] is scheduled for release on September 13, 2005 by Experience Hendrix/UMe at a suggested retail price of $19.98. Pre-orders for this title are now being accepted by Authentic Hendrix online at www.authentichendrix.com or by calling toll-free 1-888-EXP-JIMI (or outside North America at +1-206-988-6866) and requesting item #622-002-016.

The Paupers!

The Paupers were originally formed as the Spats in 1965 by lead guitarist Chuck Beale, bassist Denny Gerrard, guitarist Bill Misener and vocalist Skip Prokop. In 1966, Adam Mitchell replaced Misener and in 1968 bassist Brad Cambell joined the band after Gerrard departed. After two albums recorded in the late '60s, Magic People and Ellis Island, the Paupers broke up in 1969. Adam Mitchell went on to release a solo record in 1979, Redhead in Trouble, for Warner Bros..

These are some things that Jimi said.

"IMAGINATION IS THE KEY TO MY LYRICS. THE REST IS PAINTED WITH A LITTLE SCIENCE FICTION."

"MY GOAL IS TO BE ONE WITH MUSIC. I JUST DEDICATE MY WHOLE LIFE TO THIS ART."

"THE TIMES I BURNED MY GUITAR IT WAS LIKE A SACRIFICE. YOU SACRIFICE THE THINGS YOU LOVE. I LOVE MY GUITAR."

"MY PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY IS MY MUSIC. NOTHING BUT MUSIC - LIFE - THAT'S ALL."

"I'VE COME TO THE END OF ONE MUSIC CIRCLE, IT'S NOW TIME TO GO TO ANOTHER. THE TROUBLE IS PEOPLE WON'T LET ME CHANGE. YOU'RE STILL SUPPOSED TO ENTERTAIN NO MATTER WHAT'S HAPPENING TO YOU AS A MUSICIAN."

"YOU HAVE TO FORGET ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY, WHEN YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DIE, OR WHEN YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE LOVING. YOU HAVE TO FORGET ABOUT ALL THESE THINGS. YOU HAVE TO GO ON AND BE CRAZY. CRAZINESS IS LIKE HEAVEN."

"IF I'M FREE IT'S BECAUSE I'M ALWAYS RUNNING."

"IN LITTLE WING WE PUT THE GUITAR THROUGH THE LESLIE SPEAKER OF AN ORGAN, AND IT SOUNDS LIKE JELLY BREAD."

"MUSIC MAKES ME HIGH ON STAGE, AND THAT'S THE TRUTH. IT'S LIKE BEING ALMOST ADDICTED TO MUSIC."

"I STARTED THINKING. THINKING ABOUT THE FUTURE. THINKING THAT THIS ERA OF MUSIC - SPARKED OFF BY THE BEATLES - HAD COME TO A END. SOMETHING NEW HAS GOT TO COME, AND JIMI HENDRIX WILL BE THERE."

"THE BLACK PEOPLE PROBABLY TALK ABOUT US LIKE DOGS...UNTILL WE PLAY...WHEN I SEE SOME OF THEM IN THE STREET, THEY SAY, 'I SEE YOU GOT THESE TWO WHITE BOYS WITH YOU'...I TRY TO EXPLAIN TO THEM ALL ABOUT THIS NEW MUSIC. I PLAY THEM SOME RECORDS. FIRST I PLAY "CREAM"...AND WHEN THEY SAY, 'HEY, THAT'S GREAT, WHO IS THAT PLAYING THE GUITAR ?', I TELL THEM IT'S ERIC CLAPTON AND HE'S AN ENGLISHMAN. THEN I PLAY THEM SOME OF WHAT WE (THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE) DO. SOMETIMES THEY STILL THINK WE'RE CRAZY."
pi_28847081
Most of Jimi's poems were eventually made into songs (e.g. - Drifting) and I haven't included such poems on this page. You can find those ones on the lyrics page.

Aha!

Voodoo Child eruit.

Hendrix is tradefriendly.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jimi Hendrix, regarded as one of the greatest electric guitar players and known as a prodigious womanizer, lied about being gay to get out of the U.S. Army and pursue his true love -- music, according to a new biography of the rock legend.

"Room Full of Mirrors," written by Charles Cross and published by Hyperion, recounts the life of Hendrix, from a troubled childhood in a black Seattle neighborhood, to brushes with the law and a fast climb to the top of the rock world with hits such as "Purple Haze," and "Hey Joe," and "The Wind Cries Mary."

"It's almost hard to believe what a big, colorful life he led," said Cross, who interviewed more than 300 people for the book, which goes on sale on Wednesday.

Hendrix did not begin playing guitar until he was 15. Three years later, Hendrix enlisted in the 101st Airborne Division in 1961 as a court-offered alternative to jail for riding in stolen cars.

He claimed he was discharged after 13 months after breaking his ankle in a parachuting drill, but military records showed he was discharged for "homosexual tendencies."

According to the records, he told the base psychiatrist he had sexual fantasies about his bunkmates, grew addicted to masturbating and was in love with a member of his squad, Cross writes.

"He wanted to get out," Cross said in an interview. "Music just had become his calling."

Hendrix's career picked up speed after he left Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He began touring the South with a band and played back-up for headliners like Otis Redding, the Isley Brothers and Little Richard on the so-called 'Chitlin' Circuit.'

Being in the background proved stifling for Hendrix, who moved to New York to develop his style. In 1966, he headed to London where he led a trio known as the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Four months after arriving in London came the group's first single, "Hey Joe." Nine months later, their smash album "Are You Experienced?" was released.

An eye-popping performance by Hendrix at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival launched his star in the United States and he closed the 1969 Woodstock Festival with his famed solo version of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

An outlandish showman with lightning-fast fingers, Hendrix enthralled audiences with his blend of blues, R&B and rock styles and a stage show in which he would pick strings with his teeth, play behind his back or light his guitar on fire.

The fascination with Hendrix lives on, with more than 50 million albums and compact discs sold since his death, caused by choking on his own vomit after taking too many sleeping pills, according to a London coroner.

"He was so on the cutting edge," said Cross. "He embraced the Chitlin' Circuit where everyone dressed alike and then he managed to cross over into white culture and the outrageous dress and wild culture of the '60s. His life is a very unique window into white and black America of the '50s and '60s."

Notes:

The Flamingo Club recording is the earliest known recording of the band in concert in England. It's really very good for a recording of this vintage with clear enough vocals and guitar and it's the closest we are likely to get to the experience of the band in a small club situation as they broke new ground in the early months of 1967. The Chelmsford tracks from the same month are taken from a tv programme recorded for Dutch tv. If the whole of the concert was professionally recorded the only surviving footage is represented by these two tracks. The final three tracks come from the last concert played by the Experience in the UK in 1967.

NB: There is some wobble in the sound during Wild Thing but this recording comes from the unfinished footage of the track.

Cover included.

Jimi Hendrix

"When I die, I want people to play my music, go wild, and freak out an' do anything they wanna do."

This musical genius died at 27 years old, leaving behind only 4 completed albums.

Although he was staying in a London hotel at the time, on September 18th, 1970 Jimi was sleeping in his girlfriend Monika Danneman's flat, in Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill, London. Hers was number 22. She left for cigarettes around 10:20, came back and saw him covered in vomit. She could not wake him. Monika called Jimi's good friend Eric Burdon and explains that she could not wake Jimi up, and he's covered in puke. Eric shouted into the phone, "CALL THE FUCKING AMBULANCE!" Monika wasn't sure she should, because Jimi might get mad about the scandal. Burdon repeated his order. The ambulance attendants arrived about 20 minutes later, wrapped him up, and carried Jimi up from the garden apartment.

The following is and excerpt from David Henderson's " 'Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky":

"Instead of laying him down in the ambulance, they sat him in a chair and strapped him upright. He tried to bend over so he could vomit, but one of the attendants quickly pushed his head back and strapped him in tighter. Jimi's head lolled back as the ambulance driver took off. The speeding ambulance pressed his body back in the chair and made it even more difficult for him to get his head down. He felt bile and vomit near his Adam's apple. Jimi was unable to speak. Even if he could, the ball of vomit in his throat prevented him. The vomit massed in his vocal chords. His lungs became congested. His heart began to pump harder, and the right ventricle dilated. Fluid began to seep into his lungs. He was rushed from the ambulance into St. Mary Abbots Hospital. The doctors work on him for over an hour, to no avail."

He was pronounced dead at 11:25 am. His last meal was a tuna sandwich.

View the Death Certificate

Jimi was buried on October 1st, in Greenwood Memorial Cemetery, outside Seattle, Washington.

Hendrix was the first rock star to be awarded an English Heritage plaque. It was erected on September 15th, 1997, at 14 Brook Street, Mayfair. This is the flat he lived in with a different girlfriend, Kathy Etchingham. Unveiled by Pete Townshend, Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd, and Ray Davies of the Kinks, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

Now here comes the bizarre part. The two ex loves of Mr. Hendrix, Kathy Etchingham and Monika Danneman, had a "war of the words" going on. Kathy accused Monika of not calling the ambulance for hours. Monika called Kathy a liar and a cheat, and that Kathy told Jimi she would leave her husband, if he would take her back. Kathy sued for libel, and won. The deal was £1000 fine, and an agreement never to repeat the allegation. Well, Monika DID repeat it in her book. In 1996, Kathy sued and won again. Monika walked away from this one with a £30,000 fine. Get this, two days later she sucks the exhaust pipe of her Mercedes, and gasses herself to death.

In 1995, Jimi's case was reopened, and Monika was cleared of any blame.

Trivia: His mother was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian.
pi_29501180

Jimi Hendrix Experience - The Blues Project Outtakes.

1994 saw the release of the Alan Douglas produced "Blues" album.
This was seen as one of his better efforts during his time managing Jimi's music. A cassette containing three outtakes was sent to a couple of high profile collectors shortly after.
This tape contained Villanova Junction Blues, Hear My train A Comin' and Belly Button Window. For a while this tape was in very limited circulation amongst a few hard core collectors. Later the tracks saw the first light of day on the bootleg "500000 Halos"which was named after line in a poem written by Jimi post Woodstock. However there were more outtakes than those three and more has leaked out over the years (albeit in limited circulation).

I am slightly dubious about the generation of this material but it is nevertheless of extremely high quality. There is a certain amount of tape hiss present here and there but that could just be from the transfer to cassette. The cassette I originally received with the three tracks exhibited slight hiss as well. The tracks on this disc are taken from a set of 11 CDRS titled the Blues Project Outtakes
Notes

Hear My train A Comin' is a composite made by Douglas of two different takes.
New Rising Sun and the 27 minute Band Of Gypsys Villanova jam are not in general circulation as far as I know.
Country Blues was released on the EH Box Set but this version of the straight mix is longer.

1. New Rising Sun (8.26)
2. Country Blues (straight mix) (8.37)
3. Hear My train A Comin' (8.07)
4. Belly Button Window (2.25)
5. The Things That I used To Do (5.45)
6. Villanova Junction Blues Jam (27.34)
7. 3 Little Bears- South Saturn Delta (12.44)

***************QUOTE****************

From Chris Dixon's 30th Anniversary Series © C S Dixon
June 5, 1998 marks 30 years since the Experience's appearance on the 'It Must Be Dusty (Springfield)' TV show in the UK. They did just three songs:

Quick and somewhat breathless intro by Dusty and they do 'Stone Free'. Verses show off Mitch's stick-on-rim snare work, a subtlety lost in the big concerts. Jimi prefaces the song with a dedication to Brian Jones (maybe he was there?), then instead of going into the solo with the usual "turn it loose, baby" he interjects "get off my cloud, baby" !!

Next up is a duet with Dusty on 'Mockingbird' though it doesn't sound very rehearsed! Such as it is, still one of the very few vocal 'duets' Jimi ever did with a female vocalist (maybe the Newport 6/69 jam, and are we counting '9 To The Universe' with Devon?) though he used background singers in the studio.

First media performance of Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Apparently aware of TV time constraints, Jimi skips the muted-string-strummed wah intro and goes right to the opening line (turns on wah on second line). Does one verse then a short but intense solo then last verse and another short solo ending in some trademark dental work!

Release Notes:

The long-awaited Deluxe Edition of the 1973 theatrical documentary
Jimi Hendrix is loaded with extras and completely remastered and
remixed to provide exceptional sound and picture quality This is
the biography of Jimi Hendrix, the world famous guitarist who died
much too young. Featuring the guitar wizard on stage and behind
the scenes, classic concert footage is interspersed with
interviews with friends and prominent musicians giving first-hand
recollections, including Pete Townshend, Mick Jagger, Eric
Clapton, Little Richard, Lou Reed, Buddy Miles and more. Includes
songs "Hey Joe," "Rock me baby," "Like a rolling stone," "A Star
Spangled Banner" from Woodstock `69 and many more, from his
beginnings to his Monterey, Woodstock and Isle of Wight
performances.

If any artist deserved a hagiography it was Jimi Hendrix, and Joe
Boyd's 1973 "authorized" tribute adequately sanctifies the legend.
Perversely for a documentary, it achieves this simply through
well-chosen concert footage rather than through the insights of
the various talking heads. Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Mick
Jagger, Lou Reed, and Germaine Greer are all wheeled out to wax
lyrical about their days with Jimi, but nothing is more eloquent
than watching and listening to him play. From "Hey Joe" in grainy
black and white on the Ready Steady Go TV show, classic footage of
Monterey, Woodstock (yes, "The Star-Spangled Banner"), and the
Isle of Wight festivals to an acoustic 12- string rendition of
"Hear My Train a' Comin'," Hendrix the musician speaks for
himself.

But if Hendrix the musician shines through, this is not the most
insightful profile of Hendrix the man. The circumstances
surrounding his death, for example, are hardly touched upon
(girlfriend at the time Monika Dannemann gets only a few seconds
of screen time). Interview footage with Hendrix himself plus some
occasionally rambling and incoherent comments from such intimates
as his father, army buddies, ex-girlfriends (including Linda
Keith, who "discovered" him in New York and brought him to
England), and fellow musicians all take second place to the music
itself. The most sensible quote comes from Little Richard, who
proves once and for all that he's utterly bonkers when he says of
Jimi's music: "At times he made my big toes shoot up into my

This collection of instrumental recordings reveal just a few of
the creative explorations Jimi Hendrix was undertaking throughout
the first half of 1969.

Never intended for release in their present state, this collection
shines further light on his creative development and unending
quest for new musical challenges. The diversity of these
recordings-from solo demos to group efforts with The Experience to

music and interacting with fellow musicians in any setting
whatsoever.

This insightful 11-song release features "Slow Version," "Ezy

"PURPLE HAZE" - THE JIMI HENDRIX STORY
Originally broadcast January 2002
Presented by Gary Moore

01. part 1 (46:55)
02. part 2 (39:13)

Gary Moore tells the story of the greatest guitarist of all time and one of the most influential figures in rock music.

"I put on my Hendrix album and my son said 'Daddy, who's that' and I said 'well son, that's God'"- Robert Plant

The story of Hendrix's life unfolds over two parts, from his troubled boyhood in Seattle, through his days in the army and his early career as a jobbing musician supporting everyone from the Isley Brothers to Little Richard. True fame came when he was discovered by Chas Chandler of The Animals in a Greenwich Village café - Chandler offered to manage him, took him to swinging London and formed the Experience with Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell.

The release of Are You Experienced in 1967 announced the arrival of a major new talent, taking the British rock world by storm and setting new standards in guitar playing. Over the next four years Hendrix would revolutionise music, release a trio of groundbreaking studio albums and perform some of the most (often literally) incendiary live shows in the history of rock. There can be no better elegy for the war torn, drugged up, crazy sixties than Jimi's Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock.

When Jimi Hendrix died in London on September 18th, 1970, he left behind a legacy of music which still influences musicians to this day. It's worth remembering that everything on which Hendrix's reputation rests was recorded in just three years. The flood of albums released posthumously are testament to his prolific talent.

The programme features archive interviews with Jimi himself, and we also hear from Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding, Chas Chandler, Brian May, Robert Wyatt and Jimi's longstanding girlfriend, Kathy Etchingham.

Biography of rock star Jimi Hendrix chronicles his early career, including a stint with Little Richard who fired him for getting too flamboyant, to his tragic failure. Struggling to find a niche, he moves to England where he becomes friends with musician and producer Chas Chandler (Christian Portenza). Chas then teams him with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding (Krit Holdenreid, Christopher Ralph) to form the Experience. As Hendrix gets public attention, Chas then introduces him to a major record producer (Billy Zane) who takes over his career. While this gets Hendrix international exposure, it also places him in the hands of people interested only in the money aspects that his career offers them. One of the early disasters foisted on him by the record company is an opening bill for "The Monkees" on an American tour. His then unknown act is booed by teens just wanting to see their idols. A genius and a perfectionist, Hendrix drives everyone crazy as he starts making albums himself without producers or the Experience. Pushed by the record executives beyond his limits, he turns to drugs and wild parties for release which ultimately leads to his demise.

Jimi Hendrix was an exceptional musician and songwriter, certainly one of the most outstanding artists of the twentieth century. The interpretation of him as simply a great or greatest guitarist has in a way overshadowed the sheer beauty of his music.
It is true that he transformed the whole approach to electric guitar playing with his audacious fusion of Chicago blues, R&B, rock and roll, free jazz, you name it. In his wake came to the fore Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Peter Green, Niel Young, Johnny Winter, Billy Gibbons and Frank Zappa (to name but a few personal favourites). His success also launched a thousand imitaters, such as Robin Trower, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Frank Marino. It has even been evoked that Jimi (and Cream) must take the blame for inspiring hoards of turgid heavy metal bands and a plethora of fast fingered fools who though it was just about speed across the fret board. Forget the guitar, Hendrix's real peers were the likes of John Coltrane, Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, James Brown, Prince, Muddy Waters, Marvin Gaye, Miles Davis…

He had an enormous influence on musicians in many fields, not only in rock and blues circles. Miles Davis felt compelled to abandon traditionnal "Jazz" structures, even putting a wah-wah pedal on his trumpet, to get the "Hendrix sound" into his music. Soul artists such as The Temptations, Curtis Mayfield and subsequent Oscar winner Isaac Hayes, soon featured funky Hendrix style "wakka wakka" or fuzzy guitars in their arrangements. Black artists adopted Jimi's look, from Sly Stone to Little Richard. In 1970, a young Michael Jackson and his brothers, and later Earth Wind & Fire, took the stage sporting psychedelic costumes and afros, looking like Hendrix clones. Back in 1967, even Clapton had an afro perm, making him look like a white Hendrix fronting Cream !

The fact that he acheived so much in a short time, with such influence, is amazing. There again, what he did get down is frustratingly short of the real measure of his talents. His blossoming as a songwriter in 1967 and 1968 had established him as a major international artist. His three classic albums as The Jimi Hendrix Experience had perfectly suited and even defined their epoch. Two unbeleivable years of creativity and fun, like one long party, which couldn't have lasted forever.
The whole psychedelic "thing" had burned itself out by the end of 1968. The Beatles looked for a fresh start with the blank sheet of "The White Album", The Rolling Stones wisely came back to their first love of blues-rock, Pete Townsend wrote his legendary rock opera "Tommy". For Jimi, the psychedelic "wild man" personna was by then old hat. The dream was over (to paraphrase John Lennon). He had to move on.

Relations within the band began to deteriorate also. The relentless crafting of his masterpiece "Electric Ladyland" in 1968, amidst a hoard of partying hangers-on, drove Chas Chandler away and further alienated Noel Redding. On the last Experience tours of Europe and America in 1969, Jimi had tired of putting on a physical show, adopting a static, more serious approach on stage, concentrating fully on his playing. He lost patience with fans who came to see the "Wild Man", demanding just the hits. He felt trapped in his own image and rather pompously wished that audiences would sit and pay attention as though they were in church ! His "Electric Church" as he called it, to convey his desire to touch people's very souls.

To top it all, in May 1969, while in Toronto, hard drugs were found in his luggage and consequently he faced severe penalties. This troubled him and certainly sobered his mood in general (he was however cleared of all charges in 1970 ).

Finally, the heavy demands of his management and record companies led him to reclusion in his homeland in mid 1969 after Noel and eventually Mitch quit to continue with their own projects. The band had been touring solidly for two and half years, so it is fair to say that they needed a break aswell. After the wild escapade to London and around the world, Jimi was back home and now felt more comfortable with his original bass partner Billy Cox by his side again, just like in the old days (they had spent years touring the States in the early sixties). Through 1969, now without Chas Chandler's keen ear and music business know-how, Jimi was seen to be losing focus on his work, spending months on songs (instead of the few days or hours in which he put things down in 1967). The two new groups he formed with Cox, called Gypsy Son and Rainbows and Band Of Gypsys, soon fell apart through lack of conviction, error of judgement.

A tour was on the cards in September 1969, but Jimi declared that he didn't feel up to the challenge and cancelled it, obliging him to pay the organizers a large compensatory sum. So in the studio, he worked on at his own pace (to hell with them) and this period was perhaps seen unfairly as a creative block, though it was only six months, and he did return with a radically different sound.

He had given himself a hard act to follow. After the intoxicating euphoria of swinging '67 and '68, his songwriting may have lost some of its biting originality but then he had perhaps said it all in terms of psychedelic rock. He came back to a more earthy R&B feel in his work, with more social awareness in his lyrics, while aspiring to move on towards the liberties of jazz-rock, a field that would have suited his phenomenal talents of improvisation. His new music looked forward into the new decade. It was soulful, funky and richly arranged. Modern.

Another project he had in mind was a "Tommy"-like concept album with the working title of "Black Gold". He had ideas to expand the theme to poetry, an animated film, and an illustrated book. A cassette of musical ideas was unfortunately stolen from his appartment after his death and has never resurfaced, not even unofficially to my knowledge (the bootleg with that title is merely a collection of rarities and outtakes).

In 1970 he began to get his act together. He was recording at a quicker pace as he got to grips with the next phase of his music. On stage, with Mitch Mitchell again in the drum seat and Billy Cox on solid bass, even though some of his new music didn't really fit the three piece format, he was back playing great power trio rock 'n' roll and blues across America, sometimes even reviving some of his old stage antics. However, by the time The Cry Of Love Tour reached Europe at the end of summer 1970, it seemed like he had had enough, putting on disappointing shows at each date. Billy Cox then became ill and the tour was mercifully grounded.

Everyone wanted a piece of Jimi: PPX Entrerprises (demanding another settlement album), The Black Panthers (pressuring him to do more for the black cause), the hangers-on, the drug pushers. His sanctuary was to be his own state-of-the-art Electric Lady Studios in New York (which still operates to this day - see Links) but sadly he didn't live long enough to fully appreciate it. Friends remarked how tired and confused JImi appeared, whereas others found him enthusiastic about new projects (Electric Lady, "Black Gold", colaborations ahead with Gil Evans or Roland Kirk, his plans to expand the group, his upcoming new album nearing completion, ...). Whatever his mental state on that fateful eve of September 18 at The Samarkand Hotel, Jimi Hendrix did not comit suicide or take a "drug overdose" (he was never an addict either). Evidence showed that he had taken a few sleeping pills (as he might have often done), then maybe a few more, certainly not enough to show an intention to cop out. He didn't know that those pills, belonging to his German girlfriend, were much stronger than the usual ones. They didn't mix well with the wine he'd had at dinner either. A tragic accident. Or was there foul play afoot ? Interviews with ambulance staff and the doctor who examined Jimi, talk of enourmous quantities of wine ingurgitated while the alcohol level in his blood was low.

Let's remember him as Chas Chandler did, as someone who's life was full of fun. Jimi Hendrix lives. His music remains fresh, exiting, inspiring.
Who am I to judge him. I just hope this site serves its purpose in clarifying the jumble of material that constitutes his musical legacy on record.
I think I had better stop there or I'll never get this thing on-line.

Mooi stukje tekst

Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Plays Berkeley
(Experience Hendrix)

Jimi Hendrix played two shows at Berkeley on 30 May 1970, which have long been both legendary and unreleased. Some legendary recordings maintain their fascination only by being unavailable. In this case the recordings have been oft-heard in remarkable quality on bootlegs, and the few officially released individual tracks (including ''Johnny B Goode'', and the Rainbow Bridge LP version of ''Hear My Train a Comin''') have been magnificent.

The weakest point in the set, as so often with gigs from the era, is the start. First tracks were often presented as a warm up lap rather than the pyrotechnic rabble-rouser we expect today. This opener, an early incarnation of ''Straight Ahead'', is too obviously half-built to achieve much momentum. After that, however, there's very little to complain about. ''Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)'' is a strong candidate for the best recorded version, studio included (though it's a shocking change of pace when Jimi reverses it at full tilt into the In The West classic ''Lover Man''). With Billy Cox on bass, songs like ''Stone Free'' and ''Hey Joe'' are short punchy performances, unlike the epic versions the 68-69 Experience would offer. Breathing space is instead given to fresher classics such as ''Machine Gun'' and ''Voodoo Child (Slight Return)''.

The pace of the show is great, with every song is presented complete and in sequence (many live Hendrix releases, particularly before Experience Hendrix took over his estate, have suffered bizarre editing and re-ordering). The sound quality is as good as any live Hendrix, certainly putting the likes of Woodstock and existing Berkeley bootlegs to shame. The DVD release of the (shamefully poor) film of this show comes with a bonus 5.1 surround-sound mix of the whole CD album and is a treat if you have the equipment.

The only disappointment of this release is that only one of the two Berkeley shows has been released. The first set is arguably as strong, and was the source for the prior releases of ''Hear My Train'' and ''Johnny B Goode''. None the less, this is the strongest newly-released Hendrix material in a long time.

Jimi Hendrix
The Dick Cavett Show (DVD)
(MCA)

Accompanied by a 55-minute documentary about the circumstances surrounding these appearances, you may think that a scant three live numbers and brief interview footage barely merit anyone's attention. How wrong could you be? Sure, this is a post-Woodstock Hendrix in the grip of insecurities and anxieties, but also still ably demonstrating why he was the world's most exciting guitarist who still had a lifetime of great music stretching ahead of him.

Unable to attend Cavett's Woodstock celebrations at the close of the festival in mid-1969, Jimi gracefully re-scheduled his first appearance on US television the following month, and the historic results are recorded here along with a set from later in the year. Performances of new numbers "Machine Gun" and "Hear My Train A Comin'" are politely truncated and sonically subdued but Hendrix still sets flame to fretboard in a way that must have been somewhat alarming to middle America. And that's not to mention the turquoise kimono our hero is sporting! Backed by a new line-up of Mitch Mitchell (drums) assisted by newcomers Billy Cox (bass) and Juma Sultan (percussion) - whom Jimi had christened the Gypsy Sun & Rainbows for the set at Yasgur's Farm - this is Jimi in the very process of trying to shake the flashy pop star tag that had dogged him since his acceptance in his homeland at Monterey in 1967.

Even more revealing is the interview that follows. Gripped by a palpable fatigue due to work pressure (famously bad management at the hands of Mike Jeffries was pushing the goose to lay far too many golden eggs to order) Jimi remains eloquent and sweetly amusing, despite complaining of sleep deprivation. A remarkably hip Cavett (despite appearances) quizzes Hendrix on his stint as a paratrooper and also his reaction to criticism over the famous overhauling of "The Star Spangled Banner" (Hendrix: "I thought it was beautiful"). But the most poignant moment is when Cavett refers to Jimi as: "the worlds greatest guitarist". Modest to a fault Hendrix shifts uncomfortably in his seat insisting Cavett amend the phrase to "the greatest guitarist in this chair".

And that's why people who knew Jimi still remember him as the charmingly unassuming genius whose only desire was to explore life through his music's development. The restless creativity that led to such frustration in the face of his 'wild man of pop' persona would eventually see him grow tired of rock's straightjacket. Thereby hangs the huge question mark. What kind of cosmic funk-jazz would he be making today? We can only be grateful that footage like this exists to remind us that, for a short while, we shared the planet with a such a remarkably gentle man.

Jimi Hendrix
Blue Wild Angel
(MCA)

Hendrix's legacy has not been well represented by his live releases. Hitherto, the most widely available sets, Woodstock and Band of Gypsies, were both recorded with flawed one-off line-ups cobbled together for individual events.

Jimi's August 1970 Isle of Wight show was an eagerly anticipated return to the UK with a well-honed trio offering long-awaited new material to an audience of 600,000 people. Sadly, given such auspicious circumstances, he arrived jet-lagged, studio-lagged, deeply troubled and about as grouchy as any usually-charming-genius can become.

The fact that Hendrix would die within weeks of this festival could be claimed to add to its significance, but adds only poignancy to a performance which is very uneven, lacking the passion and spontaneity which were his trademark. Previously released recordings of this show, in 1971 and 1991, failed through dismal editing and re-sequencing to showcase the best of the material. This new attempt, under the auspices of the Hendrix estate, could hardly fail to improve on its predecessors but equally cannot be expected to turn lead into gold.

On offer are two formats: a limited edition double CD comprising all 120 meandering minutes, and a single CD which omits most of the second half of the set. The highlight of both is the oft-compiled finale ''In From The Storm'' - the only new song which captures the Experience's original intensity. Other 'new' compositions struggle without the glorious polyrhythmic overdubs the studio offered to ''Dolly Dagger'', ''Freedom'' and ''Ezy Ryder''. Unfortunately Hendrix by now felt jaded towards his earlier material - after an unfocussed ''Foxy Lady'' he complains to the audience about the demand for him to play such oldies.

There are still joys here for afficionados (who will buy the double), and the single CD is the most flattering release of the show yet achieved - but if you crave a live 'greatest hits' then wait in hope of a release for the stunning but mysteriously unavailable Berkeley shows from May 1970, or try the Feb 24 1969 Albert Hall show on the 3 CD The Last Experience set recently released by Charly/Snapper.

JIMI HENDRIX'S CHILDHOOD HOME UNDER THREAT

JIMI HENDRIX’s boyhood home is under threat following a US judge’s refusal to extend an order barring its demolition.

However, plans to turn the legendary guitarist’s house into a community music centre have been deemed as worthwhile.

The house’s owners have been given until September 1 to appeal the decision.

The Hendrix Foundation has claimed that city officials have refused to work with them during the long-running dispute, whilst the Seattle authorities have said that deadlines to move or renovate the house have been missed, warranting demolition.

Henry Lewis, a long-standing friend of the Hendrix family, said: “We have people who are willing to chain themselves to that house to prevent them from tearing it down if we have to.”

According to BBC News, the foundation’s plans for the property include a facility that will offer music lessons, practice rooms and a library of musical instruments.

Officials in the suburb of Renton, where Hendrix is buried, have agreed to allow the house to be moved to a plot there, the foundation’s lawyer said in court.

A formal approval for this plan is expected on August 31, though the judge would not agree to extend the demolition ban until the end of September because it was impossible to determine how long the deal with Renton would take to be approved.

Earlier this year, Hendrix’s family said that they still hoped a road would be named after him.

Hendrix died in 1970 at the age of 27.

So, Jimi Hendrix didn't just influence players, he influenced a whole new form (Fusion/Jazz-Funk) and for a good example listen to what Miles does on his album _Agharta_ (along with _Pangea_ were his last recordings before hiatus) where they settle into a deep rhythmic groove thing invoked by Sly Stone and James Brown and then Miles starts invoking Hendrix through his two guitar players (Cosey and Lucas) along with his own wah-way drenched trumpet. One guitar player invokes Jimi's R&B, blues, funk leanings while the other gets into that ornamental, ethereal thing...the influence is unmistakable.

Jimi Hendrix: The Greatest Guitarist of All Time
The bridge between the blues and modern sounds
By Pete Townshend

I feel sad for people who have to judge Jimi Hendrix on the basis of recordings and film alone, because in the flesh he was so extraordinary. He had a kind of alchemist's ability; when he was on the stage, he changed. He physically changed. He became incredibly graceful and beautiful. It wasn't just people taking LSD, though that was going on, there's no question. But he had a power that almost sobered you up if you were on an acid trip. He was bigger than LSD.
What he played was fucking loud but also incredibly lyrical and expert. He managed to build this bridge between true blues guitar -- the kind that Eric Clapton had been battling with for years and years -- and modern sounds, the kind of Syd Barrett-meets-Townshend sound, the wall of screaming guitar sound that U2 popularized. He brought the two together brilliantly. And it was supported by a visual magic that obviously you won't get if you just listen to the music. He did this thing where he would play a chord, and then he would sweep his left hand through the air in a curve, and it would almost take you away from the idea that there was a guitar player here and that the music was actually coming out of the end of his fingers. And then people say, "Well, you were obviously on drugs." But I wasn't, and I wasn't drunk, either. I can just remember being taken over by this, and the images he was producing or evoking were naturally psychedelic in tone because we were surrounded by psychedelic graphics. All of the images that were around us at the time had this kind of echoey, acidy quality to them. The lighting in all the clubs was psychedelic and drippy.

He was dusty -- he had cobwebs and dust all over him. He was a very unremarkable-looking guy with an old military jacket on that was pretty dirty. It looked like he'd maybe slept in it a few nights running. When he would walk toward the stage, nobody would really take much notice of him. But when he walked off, I saw him walk up to some of the most covetable women in the world. Hendrix would snap his fingers, and they followed him. Onstage, he was very erotic as well. To a man watching, he was erotic like Mick Jagger is erotic. It wasn't "You know, I'd like to take that guy in the bathroom and fuck him." It was a high form of eroticism, almost spiritual in quality. There was a sense of wanting to possess him and wanting to be a part of him, to know how he did what he did because he was so powerfully affecting. Johnny Rotten did it, Kurt Cobain did it. As a man, you wanted to be a part of Johnny Rotten's gang, you wanted to be a part of Kurt Cobain's gang.

He was shy and kind and sweet, and he was fucked up and insecure. If you were as lucky as I was, you'd spend a few hours with him after a gig and watch him descend out of this incredibly colorful, energized face. There was also something quite sad about watching him. There was a hedonism about him. Toward the end of his life, he seemed to be having fun, but maybe a little bit too much. It was happening to a lot of people, but it was sad to see it happen to him.

With Jimi, I didn't have any envy. I never had any sense that I could ever come close. I remember feeling quite sorry for Eric, who thought that he might actually be able to emulate Jimi. I also felt sorry that he should think that he needed to. Because I thought Eric was wonderful anyway. Perhaps I make assumptions here that I shouldn't, but it's true. Once -- I think it was at a gig Jimi played at the Scotch of St. James [in London] -- Eric and I found ourselves holding each other's hands. You know, what we were watching was so profoundly powerful.

The third or fourth time that I saw him, he was supporting the Who at the Saville Theatre. That was the first time I saw him set his guitar on fire. It didn't do very much. He poured lighter fluid over the guitar and set fire to it, and then the next day he would be playing with a guitar that was a little bit charred. In fact, I remember teasing him, saying, "That's not good enough -- you need a proper flame-thrower, it needs to be completely destroyed." We started getting into an argument about destroying your guitar -- if you're going to do it, you have to do it properly. You have to break every little piece of the guitar, and then you have to give it away so it can't be rebuilt. Only that is proper breaking your guitar. He was looking at me like I was fucking mad.

Trying to work out how he affected me at my ground zero, the fact is that I felt like I was robbed. I felt the Who were in some ways quite a silly little group, that they were indeed my art-school installation. They were constructed ideas and images and some cool little pop songs. Some of the music was good, but a lot of what the Who did was very tongue-in-cheek, or we reserved the right to pretend it was tongue-in-cheek if the audience laughed at it. The Who would always look like we didn't really mean it, like it didn't really matter. You know, you smash a guitar, you walk off and go, "Fuck it all. It's all a load of tripe anyway." That really was the beginning of that punk consciousness. And Jimi arrived with proper music.

He made the electric guitar beautiful. It had always been dangerous, it had always been able to evoke anger. If you go right back to the beginning of it, John Lee Hooker shoving a microphone into his guitar back in the 1940s, it made his guitar sound angry, impetuous, and dangerous. The guitar players who worked through the Fifties and with the early rock artists - James Burton, who worked with Ricky Nelson and the Everly Brothers, Steve Cropper with Booker T. -- these Nashville-influenced players had a steely, flick-knife sound, really kind of spiky compared to the beautiful sound of the six-string acoustic being played in the background. In those great early Elvis songs, you hear Elvis himself playing guitar on songs like "Hound Dog," and then you hear an electric guitar come in, and it's not a pleasant sound. Early blues players, too -- Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert King -- they did it to hurt your ears. Jimi made it beautiful and made it OK to make it beautiful.

Jimi Hendrix
In 1966, he arrived in London an unknown. A week later, he was a superstar
By CHARLES R. CROSS

Jimi Hendrix took his first footsteps on British soil on Saturday, September 24th, 1966, arriving at Heathrow at nine in the morning. As he walked off the plane, he carried a small bag that contained a change of clothes, his pink plastic hair curlers and a jar of Valderma cream for the acne that still marred his twenty-three-year-old face. These few items, along with his precious guitar, were all he owned.
Escorting Jimi was Chas Chandler, formerly the bassist for the Animals, who was launching himself as a manager. Chandler had come upon Jimi in a Greenwich Village club and spilled a milkshake on himself, convinced that Jimi was his ticket to riches. Jimi was penniless at the time, having spent the previous three years as a backup musician on the chitlin circuit. Though Jimi had been born in Seattle, and didn't even begin to play guitar until he was fifteen, by the time Chandler met him he had already toured the nation with countless R&B combos, including Little Richard and the Isley Brothers. In Greenwich Village, fueled by both LSD and Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde, Jimi was attempting to re-create himself as a solo act. He was playing to twenty teenagers when Chandler arrived, yet Jimi still only agreed to follow him to England if he promised to introduce him to Eric Clapton.

Once in England, Chandler immediately set out to turn Jimi into a star. On the way from the airport, they stopped by the house of bandleader Zoot Money. Jimi attempted to play his Stratocaster through Money's stereo, and when that failed, he grabbed an acoustic guitar and began to wail. Andy Summers, who a dozen years later would help form the Police, lived in the basement and heard the commotion. When he came upstairs to join the informal party and found himself mesmerized by how Jimi's huge hands seemed at one with the instrument's neck, he became the first of Britain's guitar players to be awed by Jimi's phenomenal skill.

Also rooming in the house was twenty-year-old Kathy Etchingham, who would soon also be smitten by Jimi. She worked as a part-time DJ and had dated Brian Jones, Keith Moon and a few other rock stars. Money's wife tried to wake her to tell her about the new sensation in the living room. She said, "Wake up, Kathy. You've got to come and see this guy Chas has brought back. He looks like the Wild Man of Borneo." The tag would later end up as one of Jimi's nicknames in the tabloids, a consequence of his unkempt physical appearance and his race, both of which were so unusual on London's music scene that he might as well have been a new anthropological discovery. The name was racist, of course, and the description would never have been used for a white musician. Still, Jimi enjoyed the nickname, as it sounded mysterious and foreign, qualities he hoped to cultivate.

Etchingham was too tired to take a peek at the so-called wild man, but later that evening she went for a drink at a club and discovered Jimi onstage. As he started to play blues tunes, the club went silent and the crowd watched in a sort of shared rapture. "He was just amazing," Etchingham recalled. "People had never seen anything like it." Eric Burdon of the Animals was one of the many musicians at the club that night. "It was haunting how good he was," Burdon said. "You just stopped and watched."

Walking out of the club, Jimi -- unaware that British cars drove on the left side of the street -- stepped in front of a taxi. "I managed to grab him and pull him back, and the taxi just brushed him," Etchingham said. Later, Jimi asked her to come to bed with him. She found him charming and handsome, and consented. They would stay together for the next two years, and Etchingham would be one of Jimi's longest-term girlfriends. She knew everyone on the scene, and she became his entree into Swinging London and friendships with the Who, the Rolling Stones and many other bands.

Jimi had been in England less than twenty-four hours and he'd already wowed a key segment of London's music scene, bedded his first English "bird" and narrowly avoided death. He had spent twenty-three years of his life struggling in an America where black musicians were outcasts within rock music. In one single day in London, his entire life had permanently been recast.

Chas Chandler's partner was Michael Jeffrey, the Animals' manager and a former British intelligence officer who did little to defuse sinister rumors that he had killed people as a spy. They placed a "musicians wanted" ad in Melody Maker, which drew in a twenty-year-old guitar player named Noel Redding. He had never before played bass, but Jimi liked Redding's frizzy hair, which reminded him of Dylan, and he was hired.

Even after Redding was hired, Chandler phoned Brian Auger, who led the blues-based jazz band the Brian Auger Trinity, and proposed a radical idea. "I've got this really amazing guitar player from America," Chandler told him. "I think it would be perfect if he fronted your band." Auger declined. As a fallback, Chandler asked if Jimi could at least jam with the Trinity at a show that evening. To this, Auger agreed.

The Trinity's guitarist, Vic Briggs, was setting up his gear when Jimi came onstage. Briggs was using one of the first Marshall amplifiers, an experimental model that had four six-inch speakers -- smaller than the later Marshall stacks but still capable of tremendous power. When Jimi plugged his guitar into the amp, he turned the amplifier volume knobs to their maximum, much to Briggs' amazement. "I had never had the controls up past five," Briggs said. Seeing Briggs' look of horror, Jimi said, "Don't worry, man, I turned it down on the guitar." He shouted out four chords and began.

The sound was a wall of feedback and distortion, which itself was enough to turn every head in the club; the moment also marked the beginning of Jimi's love affair with Marshall amplifiers. "Everyone's jaw dropped to the floor," Auger said. "The difference between him and a lot of the English guitar players like Clapton, Jeff Beck and Alvin Lee was that you could still tell what the influences were in Clapton's and Beck's playing. There were a lot of B.B. King, Albert King and Freddie King followers around in England. But Jimi wasn't following anyone -- he was playing something new."

Just a week after Jimi landed in England, Cream were playing a show at the Polytechnic in central London. Chandler bumped into Clapton a few days before and told him he'd like to introduce Jimi sometime. Meeting Clapton, of course, was the one promise Chandler had made to Jimi before they left New York. Clapton mentioned the Polytechnic gig and suggested Chandler bring his protege. In all likelihood, Clapton meant he would be glad simply to meet Jimi, but Jimi nonetheless arrived with his guitar. Chandler, Jimi and their girlfriends stood in the audience during the first half of the show, and Chandler called up to the stage and summoned Clapton over to ask if Jimi might jam. The request was so preposterous that no one in Cream -- Clapton, Jack Bruce or Ginger Baker -- knew quite what to say: No one had ever asked to jam with them before; most would have been too intimidated by their reputation as the best band in Britain. Bruce finally said, "Sure, he can plug into my bass amp."

Jimi plugged his guitar into a spare channel and immediately began Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor." "I'd grown up around Eric, and I knew what a fan he was of Albert King, who had a slow version of that song," recalled press agent Tony Garland, who was at the show. "When Jimi started his take, though, it was about three times as fast as Albert King's version, and you could see Eric's jaw drop -- he didn't know what was going to come next." Remembering the show later, Clapton said, "I thought, 'My God, this is like Buddy Guy on acid.' "

When Bruce told his version of the fabled event, he focused on Clapton's reaction and alluded to graffiti in London that proclaimed, "Clapton is God." "It must have been difficult for Eric to handle," Bruce said, "because [Eric] was 'God,' and this unknown person comes along and burns." Jeff Beck was in the audience that night, and he, too, took warning from Jimi's performance. "Even if it was crap -- and it wasn't -- it got to the press," Beck later said. Jimi had been in London for eight days and he had already met God, and burned him.

Hendrix and Dylan

They became famous playing very different music, but there are remarkable similarities between Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix. Both grew up in backwater locales — Bob in Hibbing, Minnesota and Jimi in Seattle, Washington. Each was immersed in 1950s rock 'n' roll — Jimi loved Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan was a big fan of Buddy Holly.
I used to play rock and roll a long time ago, before I even started playing old-fashioned folk.

— Bob Dylan, 1965 (Bob Dylan: In His Own Words by Christian Williams, © 1993 Omnibus Press).

After leaving their respective small towns, both young musicians eventually found their way to New York's thriving Greenwich Village club scene, which each was able to use as a springboard to international acclaim.

The first time I saw him, he was playing with John Hammond (Jr.). He was incredible then. I'd already been to England and beyond, and although he didn't sing, I kinda had a feeling he figured into things…

— Bob Dylan, from the liner notes to the Biograph CD box set, © 1985 CBS Inc.

Though Dylan and Hendrix eventually followed different musical paths, both artists spoke unique musical languages and were ahead of their time. Dylan made his name as a post–beat generation poet/folk rebel, whereas Hendrix combined Chitlin' Circuit showmanship with psychedelic blues and extreme volume to form a new type of music altogether.

Though they were not close friends, Jimi was a huge fan of Bob Dylan and covered at least four of his tunes, both live and in the studio. These tracks include "Like a Rolling Stone," "All Along the Watchtower," "Drifter's Escape" and "Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" In addition, Dylan's free-form lyrical style had a profound influence on Jimi's original material. Hendrix songs such as "Angel," "The Wind Cries Mary" and "Little Wing" all show a distinct Dylan-esque approach. Jimi had an effect on Bob's music as well, as evidenced by the live version of "All Along the Watchtower" from Dylan's 1974 live album Before the Flood. When comparing this later version with the original from 1967's John Wesley Harding LP, it is immediately apparent that Bob and his band had been listening to and implementing the structure of Jimi's interpretation of the song.

I love Dylan. I only met him once, about three years ago, back at the Kettle of Fish [a folk-rock era hangout] on MacDougal Street. That was before I went to England. I think both of us were pretty drunk at the time, so he probably doesn't remember it.

— Jimi Hendrix, Rolling Stone magazine interview, November 15, 1969.

He did a lot of my other songs too from that period… "Drifter's Escape," "Like a Rolling Stone," "Crawl Out Your Window"…

— Bob Dylan, from the liner notes to the Biograph CD box set, © 1985 CBS Inc.

Sometimes I do a Dylan song and it seems to fit me so right that I figure maybe I wrote it. Dylan didn't always do it for me as a singer, not in the early days, but then I started listening to the lyrics. That sold me.

— Jimi Hendrix, from Beat Instrumental magazine, 1969.

Like a Rolling Stone

"Like a Rolling Stone" was a huge hit for Bob Dylan in 1965. It was also the first track on an album that defined a generation, Highway 61 Revisited. Until Dylan released that album, rock 'n' roll's aim had been pure fun, periodically interrupted with a song or two about sappy heartache. Rock was music to dance to — catchy tunes that sounded great on your car's AM radio. Generally speaking, music containing personal and social commentary had been left to folk artists such as Woody Guthrie. However, "Like a Rolling Stone" changed all that. Here was a guy singing words he wrote himself, about things he really felt, with a big thumping rock beat behind it. Jimi picked up on it in a big way, and quite possibly, it could have been the very moment he first dropped the needle on the copy of that 1965 LP pictured here.

Jimi's incendiary version of "Like a Rolling Stone" from Live at Monterey starts with a few thrashing chords, and then settles into a nice groove — one that even he enjoys enough to ask the audience to "excuse me for a minute, just let me play my guitar!" Just before the first verse, he introduces the song as a "little thing by Bob Dylan… and that's his Grandma over there," jokingly referring to bass player Noel Redding. Listening to Jimi's version of the first chorus, it's hard not to wonder if he didn't relate closely to Dylan's lyrics:

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
No direction home
Look at you, a complete unknown
Yeah, like a rolling stone

The Monterey gig was the first performance of the Jimi Hendrix Experience on US soil after he took England and the rest of Europe by storm. Prior to this epic performance, Jimi was virtually unknown to the US music audience, having only previously worked as an almost invisible sideman in various American R&B bands throughout the mid-sixties. But by the time the final notes of "Wild Thing" (the set's closing number, played on Jimi's hand-painted Stratocaster, to which he then set fire and destroyed) faded into the Monterey night, Jimi had transformed himself into a bona fide international rock sensation.
pi_30349812
All Along the Watchtower

Hendrix was able to truly transform a cover tune and make it his own. This is particularly evident on "All Along the Watchtower" from 1968's Electric Ladyland. It is remarkable that Jimi was able to extract original, flowing guitar melody lines out of Bob's relatively skeletal harmonica part. Listen carefully to the very beginning of each version of the song.
Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower"

Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower"

In Dylan's version from 1967's John Wesley Harding, a slight harmonica part wafts in and out as the song builds momentum. In the Hendrix version, Jimi deftly appropriates a melody from Dylan's original harmonica line and sends it to the stratosphere. His confident lead guitar lines weave their way through the tune, making it hard to imagine that the song wasn't Jimi's all along. What was definitely Jimi's all along was the copy of John Wesley Harding pictured here, which comes from the guitarist's personal record collection
pi_30349913
Drifter's Escape

On "Drifter's Escape," Jimi Hendrix takes a different approach entirely. Dylan's original features the tried and true formula of drums, bass, and acoustic guitar — with the odd harmonica riff thrown in between each verse. Jimi, however, recorded the song as an all-out funk-rock assault, rife with searing lead guitars which begin during the first verse and don't let up until the song's blistering finale.

This previously unreleased track was originally recorded at Electric Lady Studios in July of 1970 and can now be heard on 1997's South Saturn Delta. Like "All Along the Watchtower," Dylan's original take of "Drifter's Escape" comes from the album John Wesley Harding. The EMP Collection happens to contain Jimi Hendrix's handwritten lyrics to "Drifter's Escape" and one can imagine Jimi jotting down the lyrics as he played the cut over and over from his copy of the LP.

Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?

"Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?" as performed by Hendrix on BBC Sessions follows Dylan's original take fairly closely. The Experience rarely performed this track live, and they seem to be enjoying a leisurely blast through the up-tempo tune during a late 1967 BBC radio session.

Jimi changes a few lyrics around on this one — during the chorus he adds a word: "Please come crawl out your window" and exchanges "arms and legs" for "hands and legs" during the second line of the chorus.

All Along the Watchtower '74

In closing, a comparison must also be made between Dylan's original studio version of "All Along the Watchtower" and his live version recorded with The Band on 1974's Before the Flood. The most notable difference is that the 1974 version is a 100–mile–per–hour barnburner when compared with the mid-tempo original. Robbie Robertson's furious lead guitar and Garth Hudson's synthesizer can be heard copping Hendrix's guitar solo parts throughout the song.

"All Along the Watchtower" became a US Top 20 hit for Jimi Hendrix during the fall of 1968, and by 1974 it had become an FM radio staple. Had his version become the quintessential representation of the song? Could it be that by that time even Dylan wasn't able to separate the two versions? He answers these questions in the following quote:

I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way. Funny though, his way of doing it and my way of doing it weren't that dissimilar, I mean the meaning of the song doesn't change like when some artists do other artists' songs. Strange though how when I sing it I always feel like it's a tribute to him in some kind of way.
