http://music.ibiblio.org/(...)BDs/jh69-02-22.shnf/

Doet hij het niet dat heeft de server het maximaal aantal logins waarschijnlijk bereikt (max 80)

Voor de mods. Het is geen warez. Hendrix is tradefriendly.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jimi Hendrix, regarded as one of the greatest electric guitar players and known as a prodigious womanizer, lied about being gay to get out of the U.S. Army and pursue his true love -- music, according to a new biography of the rock legend.

"Room Full of Mirrors," written by Charles Cross and published by Hyperion, recounts the life of Hendrix, from a troubled childhood in a black Seattle neighborhood, to brushes with the law and a fast climb to the top of the rock world with hits such as "Purple Haze," and "Hey Joe," and "The Wind Cries Mary."

"It's almost hard to believe what a big, colorful life he led," said Cross, who interviewed more than 300 people for the book, which goes on sale on Wednesday.

Hendrix did not begin playing guitar until he was 15. Three years later, Hendrix enlisted in the 101st Airborne Division in 1961 as a court-offered alternative to jail for riding in stolen cars.

He claimed he was discharged after 13 months after breaking his ankle in a parachuting drill, but military records showed he was discharged for "homosexual tendencies."

According to the records, he told the base psychiatrist he had sexual fantasies about his bunkmates, grew addicted to masturbating and was in love with a member of his squad, Cross writes.

"He wanted to get out," Cross said in an interview. "Music just had become his calling."

Hendrix's career picked up speed after he left Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He began touring the South with a band and played back-up for headliners like Otis Redding, the Isley Brothers and Little Richard on the so-called 'Chitlin' Circuit.'

Being in the background proved stifling for Hendrix, who moved to New York to develop his style. In 1966, he headed to London where he led a trio known as the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Four months after arriving in London came the group's first single, "Hey Joe." Nine months later, their smash album "Are You Experienced?" was released.

An eye-popping performance by Hendrix at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival launched his star in the United States and he closed the 1969 Woodstock Festival with his famed solo version of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

An outlandish showman with lightning-fast fingers, Hendrix enthralled audiences with his blend of blues, R&B and rock styles and a stage show in which he would pick strings with his teeth, play behind his back or light his guitar on fire.

The fascination with Hendrix lives on, with more than 50 million albums and compact discs sold since his death, caused by choking on his own vomit after taking too many sleeping pills, according to a London coroner.

"He was so on the cutting edge," said Cross. "He embraced the Chitlin' Circuit where everyone dressed alike and then he managed to cross over into white culture and the outrageous dress and wild culture of the '60s. His life is a very unique window into white and black America of the '50s and '60s."

Notes:

The Flamingo Club recording is the earliest known recording of the band in concert in England. It's really very good for a recording of this vintage with clear enough vocals and guitar and it's the closest we are likely to get to the experience of the band in a small club situation as they broke new ground in the early months of 1967. The Chelmsford tracks from the same month are taken from a tv programme recorded for Dutch tv. If the whole of the concert was professionally recorded the only surviving footage is represented by these two tracks. The final three tracks come from the last concert played by the Experience in the UK in 1967.

NB: There is some wobble in the sound during Wild Thing but this recording comes from the unfinished footage of the track.

Cover included.

Jimi Hendrix

"When I die, I want people to play my music, go wild, and freak out an' do anything they wanna do."

This musical genius died at 27 years old, leaving behind only 4 completed albums.

Although he was staying in a London hotel at the time, on September 18th, 1970 Jimi was sleeping in his girlfriend Monika Danneman's flat, in Lansdowne Crescent, Notting Hill, London. Hers was number 22. She left for cigarettes around 10:20, came back and saw him covered in vomit. She could not wake him. Monika called Jimi's good friend Eric Burdon and explains that she could not wake Jimi up, and he's covered in puke. Eric shouted into the phone, "CALL THE FUCKING AMBULANCE!" Monika wasn't sure she should, because Jimi might get mad about the scandal. Burdon repeated his order. The ambulance attendants arrived about 20 minutes later, wrapped him up, and carried Jimi up from the garden apartment.

The following is and excerpt from David Henderson's " 'Scuse Me While I Kiss The Sky":

"Instead of laying him down in the ambulance, they sat him in a chair and strapped him upright. He tried to bend over so he could vomit, but one of the attendants quickly pushed his head back and strapped him in tighter. Jimi's head lolled back as the ambulance driver took off. The speeding ambulance pressed his body back in the chair and made it even more difficult for him to get his head down. He felt bile and vomit near his Adam's apple. Jimi was unable to speak. Even if he could, the ball of vomit in his throat prevented him. The vomit massed in his vocal chords. His lungs became congested. His heart began to pump harder, and the right ventricle dilated. Fluid began to seep into his lungs. He was rushed from the ambulance into St. Mary Abbots Hospital. The doctors work on him for over an hour, to no avail."

He was pronounced dead at 11:25 am. His last meal was a tuna sandwich.

View the Death Certificate

Jimi was buried on October 1st, in Greenwood Memorial Cemetery, outside Seattle, Washington.

Hendrix was the first rock star to be awarded an English Heritage plaque. It was erected on September 15th, 1997, at 14 Brook Street, Mayfair. This is the flat he lived in with a different girlfriend, Kathy Etchingham. Unveiled by Pete Townshend, Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd, and Ray Davies of the Kinks, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

Now here comes the bizarre part. The two ex loves of Mr. Hendrix, Kathy Etchingham and Monika Danneman, had a "war of the words" going on. Kathy accused Monika of not calling the ambulance for hours. Monika called Kathy a liar and a cheat, and that Kathy told Jimi she would leave her husband, if he would take her back. Kathy sued for libel, and won. The deal was £1000 fine, and an agreement never to repeat the allegation. Well, Monika DID repeat it in her book. In 1996, Kathy sued and won again. Monika walked away from this one with a £30,000 fine. Get this, two days later she sucks the exhaust pipe of her Mercedes, and gasses herself to death.

In 1995, Jimi's case was reopened, and Monika was cleared of any blame.

Trivia: His mother was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian.
pi_29501180
