The Russian military has broken the stalemate in the Ukraine war, Robert Gates, former CIA director and secretary of Defense, said Wednesday, following Moscow’s successful push to take the front-line city of Avdiivka.
“It’s no longer a stalemate. The Russians have regained momentum,” Gates told The Washington Post’s David Ignatius in a streaming interview. “Everything I’m reading is that the Russians are on the offensive along the 600-mile front.”
Russia has suffered staggering losses in the war, he noted, but with Ukraine now confronting artillery shortages due to flagging U.S. support, “the Russians are feeling that the tides have turned, and while there is much to be done, the initiative has passed to them,” Gates said.
“They have more and more supplies coming in — I’ve read that for every artillery shell fired by Ukrainian forces, the Russians fire 10,” he added.
Russian officials announced Monday that its forces finalized their capture of the key Ukrainian city of Avdiivka after taking full control of the city’s large coke plant. The costly operation marked Russia’s first major victory in months, and its most significant gain since taking nearby Bakhmut last spring.
President Biden pinned the blame for Ukraine battlefield losses directly on House Republicans, who have refused to back additional aid to Kyiv without major immigration reform.
Gates noted that European allies in NATO, “who we so often criticize,” have stepped up their support to Ukraine, but lack the ability to immediately send weapons. Production timelines will see NATO support reach the battlefield in 2025, he estimated.
Right now, “the only real military lifeline comes from the United States. And as we all know, that is, shall we say, on pause right now,” he said.
Aid to Ukraine still lingers in the House, where Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is caught between moderates who support Ukraine and far-right members who oppose it without major concessions from Democrats on the border.
Gates called out Congress specifically for being too slow on approving key battlefield capabilities throughout the war, such as missile systems that have allowed strikes against Russian-occupied Crimea, which he called a “no-brainer.”
“Congress will debate for a year or more whether to send the Ukrainians tanks, and after a year, they’ll send tanks,” he said. These weapons could have arrived “a year and a half” earlier, and their delay has restrained Ukraine’s abilities, he said.
The timing of the current aid package — Biden requested a $60 billion supplemental, which was part of a bipartisan Senate package passed earlier this month — is going to be a determining factor in Ukraine’s survival against a revived Russian offensive in 2024, Gates said.
“One of the main values of the package of assistance that’s on the Hill right now, is it would provide Ukraine with significant air-defense capacity, and the wherewithal to establish a strong defensive barrier so they don’t lose any more territory,” Gates said.
Passing the package would send a message to Russia that “they’re not going to be successful in achieving their goals,” a necessary step toward a cease-fire, rebuilding Ukraine and its eventual induction into NATO, he added.

Al is het geen verassing dat Oekrane de grens beveiligd natuurlijk. Er gaan geruchten dat Putin weer een aanval op Kiev wil proberen (al betwijfel ik dat dat daadwerkelijk gaat gebeuren, ging de vorige keer ook al zo goed tenslotte). En dan zou het niet de eerste keer zijn dat dit ook vanaf Wit-Russisch grondgebied gebeurd.
En NATO vliegtuigen die het grondgebied van Wit-Rusland binnen vliegen? Lijkt me stug.

In addition, the Belarusian defence minister said that a Russian-Belarusian regional forces group will hold exercises in Belarus in 2025.

Er gaan geruchten dat Putin weer een aanval op Kiev wil proberen (al betwijfel ik dat dat daadwerkelijk gaat gebeuren, ging de vorige keer ook al zo goed tenslotte). Consumption of products of Russian origin, thus supporting the criminal regime either directly or indirectly is incompatible with the morals of society," Latvian lawmaker Janis Reirs told the parliament.
The ban will come into force in two weeks, and the government will decide in the meantime which products will be included.

Ik dacht eerst dat dit om extra hulp ging. Maar dit is de volgende stap voor de pakket van 50 miljard waar begin deze maand over gestemd was onder de lidstaten. Als ik het goed begrijp zal er volgende week op 27 februari nog een stemming plaatsvinden, maar dit zou geen probleem moeten zijn.

Oekrane moet een plan opstellen over waar ze dit geld voor nodig hebben/voor willen gebruiken. Het hoofddoel van dit geld is om de economische activiteiten weer op peil te krijgen, dus om te beginnen met de herbouw van het land/de infrastructuur. Zodat Oekrane minder afhankelijk hierin zal worden van hulp van andere landen.
Een ander doel van dit geld is om te moderniseren en zich klaar te gaan maken om te voldoen aan de eisen die aan Oekrane gesteld worden om bij de EU te kunnen komen.
Nog een doel is om om gevluchte Oekraners weer terug te kunnen laten keren en bij het heropbouwen te laten helpen. Ook kunnen de salarissen van kritiek personeel hiervan betaald worden als dat nodig is.
Natuurlijk zal er strenge controle vanuit de EU zijn op hoe dit geld besteed wordt.

Volgens de Youtuber was dit wegens "hate speech" Omdat hij Russen de bezetters noemden. En omdat hij zich tegen de Russen uitsprak. Russische bots/trolls hebben hem waarschijnlijk massaal gemeld hiervoor.
Een andere reden die Patreon gaf was omdat hij de Oekraense militairen financieel ondersteunde. En Patreon gaf aan dat hij daar hun platform voor gebruikte (hij heeft meer dan 1/2 miljoen verzameld en gedoneerd aan Oekrainse doelen, maar niet via Patreon zegt hij zelf).

Patreon cancels lots of our volunteer organisations. It is a popular fundraising platform but it has lots of content censoring and strict rules. If you send something to army they would think you also use them for it. One of Ukrainian funds got 500k USD frozen and totally millions are blocked there. Buy me a coffee is a good alternative.
Combat Veteran Reacts also lost his page a year ago and created his website for donations to be independent of the platform policies. In his case as I remember it was a combat content with hard videos to watch. In general judging on modern trends in social media they want us to film about Pink Ponies and people between 35-65 to watch it 😅. We are indeed risking as creators because Social media is our only job now. And platforms may shut us up at any moment. But no worries, Artur, you will rebuild your community 👍 Cheers 🥂

While transit by road was not allowed, legal guidance released by the EU said that rail transport could not be subject to an outright ban.
Kaliningrad borders Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic Sea and is home to over 1 million people.
Seized by the Red Army from Germany in the closing stages of World War II, Kaliningrad became separated from the Russian mainland following the break-up of the Soviet Union when Lithuania became an independent state.
