After Two Years Of War, Ukraine Still Has A Thousand Tanks
The 31 M-1 Abrams tanks the United States pledged to the Ukrainian war effort arrived in Ukraine back in the fall.
At least four months later, the 68-ton tanks—with their 120-millimeter smoothbore guns, high-end day-night optics, composite armor and powerful but thirsty gas-turbine engines—still are somewhere behind the front line.
We don’t know when Ukrainian commanders plan to commit the 2000s-vintage, four-person M-1A1SAs to combat. We don’t even know which brigade they belong to.
What we do know is that, two years into Russia’s wider war on Ukraine, Ukrainian forces have as many active tanks as they had before Russia attacked in February 2022: around a thousand.
And it’s largely because of foreign donations of tanks such as the M-1s. “Overall, we estimate that two years after the full-scale invasion, the number of [main battle tanks] in service in the Ukrainian armed forces remains near pre-war levels,” the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London reported.
But there’s a catch. The Ukrainian ground forces have doubled in size since 2022. Today there are roughly a hundred army, air-assault, marine, territorial and national guard brigades, each with at least 2,000 people and scores of vehicles.
So while Ukraine has managed at least to maintain its overall tank inventory even after losing around 700 tanks in combat, according to Oryx, its tank needs are much greater today than they were in 2022.
If every brigade had a single battalion with 31 tanks, Ukraine would need more than 3,000 tanks.
It doesn’t have 3,000 tanks. Subtracting 700 losses from a pre-war strength of 1,000 then adding 500 tanks the Ukrainians captured from the Russians, several hundred ex-Soviet tanks Ukrainian technicians recovered from long-term storage and another 600 tanks Ukraine so far has received from its allies results in a current inventory of maybe 2,000 tanks.
Cut that number in half to take into account the heavy volume of tanks passing through rear-area workshops for repairs and upgrade and you arrive at the same number IISS arrived at. A thousand tanks.
But that’s enough for 30 front-line battalions or slightly fewer than a hundred front-line companies. Equipping every Ukrainian brigade with tanks means equipping most of them with at best a company.
All that is to say, according to IISS, “Ukrainian efforts to field additional combat elements have outpaced equipment supply, leaving some units lacking equipment to be even close to full strength.”
As Russia’s wider war grinds into its third year, Ukraine is going to need more tanks. And given that Ukrainian industry still isn’t producing new tanks, it’s going to have to get them from its allies.
Just not the United States. The Americans haven’t donated any new vehicles in nearly two months. Not since Russia-aligned Republicans in the U.S. Congress began blocking a bill authorizing $60 billion in fresh aid to Ukraine.
Those 31 M-1s, lingering somewhere behind the front line, might be the only M-1s Ukraine ever gets.

Ukraine War Stories is a set of visual novels about the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Set in the early months of the war, it tells the stories of civilians trapped on Russian-occupied territory. In their shoes, you will not be a fighter, only a survivor.
The novels will take you from the first volleys of the war in Hostomel, to the terror in Bucha, to the defiant resistance in Mariupol. You will have to keep yourself and your loved ones safe, and eventually escape to safety. This will take courage and resourcefulness — and sometimes, sacrifices.
Based on real events
Every novel is a dramatization of eyewitness accounts and real events recorded in the area, condensed into one story.
The gameplay is text-based and accompanied by music and illustrations. The game's art comes from authentic war photographs taken in the areas where the stories take place.
Truly free — no catch
The full game is completely free (no in-app purchases, etc) + a free Demo is available until the full game is released. We do not try to profit from this project. Our goal is to share the recent experiences of the people of Ukraine with a worldwide audience.
Devs are from Ukraine
Developed by a small team located in Kyiv, Ukraine, working from our office despite the wartime conditions. As a Ukraine-based company, we could not sit idly by as the war rages in our country, with enemy forces stopping 3 km short of Kyiv itself, and a large portion of Ukraine being occupied.
One of the guys from our team was caught by the Russian invading forces in Bucha (where one of our stories takes place) and had to hide in a garage basement for a week with his family until they managed to evacuate. His house was plundered and looted by the Russians along with many other houses in the town. He told us his eyewitness account, which we used along with other public sources. A lot of our relatives' or friends' lives were also affected. Fortunately, everyone on our team survived so far, but the war continues…
THREE STORIES
The game includes three interactive novels about some of the first towns that were hit during the invasion: Hostomel, Bucha, and Mariupol. In each story you will play a civilian, completely outmatched against the invading Russians. Your only task is to keep yourself and your loved ones safe, and escape with your lives. But remember: as a civilian, you can only do so much.

quote:1/ The recently-sacked Admiral Viktor Sokolov was reportedly dismissed for ordering the large landing ship Caesar Kunikov to go to sea without a working propulsion system. The Ukrainian sea drone attack on 14 February is said to have ambushed the ship while it was under tow. ⬇️
2/ Sokolov's sacking took place without an official explanation, and there was also no explanation of what the Caesar Kunikov was doing off Alupka in Crimea at the time it was sunk. The VChK-OGPU Telegram channel has published an (unconfirmed) explanation of both occurrences.
3/ According to a source quoted by the channel, the Caesar Kunikov had suffered a serious technical malfunction and had left Novorossiysk on the night of 12 February to go to Sevastopol for repairs. It was unable to provide independent propulsion, so it was accompanied by tugs.
4/ Sokolov, who was until this week the commander of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is said to have been well aware of the threat from sea drones (USVs), particularly to a vessel with reduced capabilities, but still issued the order. It resulted in the loss of the ship.
5/ According to the source, there were no fatalities during the attack on 14 February – the crew was rescued or evacuated before the ship went down – but a number of them were seriously injured and are "still fighting for their lives."
6/ The large landing ship Novocherkassk was also under repair when it was destroyed at Feodosiya, which is much closer to Novorossiysk. The Caesar Kunikov's voyage to Sevastopol suggests that the ship repair facilities at Feodosiya may be inoperable after that attack. /end
quote:Dutch PM: Russia is 'nothing compared to the collective EU economy'
The EU's collective economic power is by far superior to Russia, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte told the Kyiv Independent on Feb. 17 in an interview on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, adding that European nations must invest more in defense and support for Ukraine.
"It always takes time in a democracy to take those decisions," Rutte told a Kyiv Independent reporter, responding to a question whether there are regrets that allies did not provide key defense systems before Russia had a chance to dig in on the front line and mobilize its economy.
As the full-scale Russian invasion nears its two-year mark, Ukraine finds itself in a precarious position. While the assistance from the U.S., a key military donor, remains blocked, Russia is increasing pressure on the front and ramping up its defense industry capacities.
Rutte noted that Russia's economic potential should not be overestimated: "Russia's economy is not more than the Netherlands and Belgium combined. Nothing compared to Germany, nothing compared to France, nothing compared to the collective EU economy."
Nevertheless, the allies must respond to recent developments in the war "and that means more spending on defense, more production of military capabilities," the prime minister added.
While the relatively small Netherlands took a proactive role in supporting Ukraine, for example, by spearheading the fighter jet coalition, major players like Germany came under criticism for hesitancy in providing some crucial systems, namely long-range Taurus missiles.
Rutte pointed out that Germany is providing massive aid to Ukraine, especially in comparison to other partners. This support also maintains the flow of air defenses and artillery shells to Ukraine, Rutte said, pointing out there is no controversy on supplying these two vital items.
The prime minister also hinted that "things are moving" in regard to other military systems.
Rutte further told the Kyiv Independent that the Netherlands is intensively discussing bilateral security guarantees with President Volodymyr Zelensky's team, voicing optimism that the "discussions should be closed fairly soon."
Kyiv had already finalized similar deals, based on G7 commitments made last July, with Germany, France, and the U.K.

The European Union should work on a plan to issue ¤100 billion ($107.8 billion) in eurobonds to boost the continent's defense industry, and in the meantime do more to get weapons to Ukraine, Estonia's prime minister said.
