Ukrainian defenders defeated a Russian offensive in the Zaporizhzhia sector near the village of Robotyne.
The Telegram channel of the Operational Command West reported this.
Russians attempted to storm Ukrainian positions west of Verbove and Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
They engaged about 30 armored vehicles and a large number of personnel in the offensive.
Ukrainian defenders repelled four enemy attacks in the Zaporizhzhia sector.
In addition, the video published by the Operational Command West captures the destruction of the Russian invaders’ equipment, including T-55 tanks, BTR-82A armored personnel carriers, and a rather rare variant of the MT-LB 6MB, equipped with a 6MB turret, borrowed from the BTR-80А.
The turret is armed with a 30mm 2А72 autocannon and a 7.62mm PKTM machine gun. Such a system significantly increased the firepower of the vehicle.
A gunner’s position equipped with controls and combined sights is located inside the combat compartment below the roof of the hull.
It should be noted that the enemy suffered heavy losses due to the prompt actions of the defense and aerial reconnaissance units.
The Ukrainian defenders destroyed about 18 units of equipment, including three tanks, using FPV drones.
In addition, the invaders lost about 70 servicemen, and 80 were wounded of varying degrees of severity.
Militarnyi previously reported that soldiers of the 128th Brigade repelled an attack by Russian troops and captured 11 invaders in the Zaporizhzhia sector.
Ukrainian troops successfully halted the invaders’ attack on the approach to Ukrainian positions, damaging the advancing Russian armored vehicles with artillery fire. After that, the disoriented enemy infantry sought refuge in shelters.
quote:ISW: Russia could replicate Avdiivka's capture tactics if West continues to delay aid
Russia could replicate its successful tactics in Avdiivka on a larger scale if the West continues to delay military assistance, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on Feb. 17.
The ISW notes that Russian forces secured air superiority during the Avdiivka offensive, while Western delays have hindered Ukraine’s air defense.
After Ukraine's withdrawal from Avdiivka, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that Ukraine needs modern air defense systems against Russian glide bombs, long-range weapons to destroy Russian formations, and more artillery shells.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed that Russian forces had “full control” over Avdiivka on Feb. 17. Moscow’s success was largely down to localized air superiority and a new tactic of launching mass glide bomb attacks to support advancing infantry troops, according to the ISW.
Ukrainian Sergeant Yehor Firsov said on national TV that Russian troops launched up to 500 glide bombs at Avdiivka in the last few days.
Oleksandr Borodin, the spokesman of the 3rd separate assault brigade, told public broadcaster Suspilne on Feb. 16 that Russia dropped 60 KAB bombs in one day. “(This) is a very large number on a relatively small area of the front,” he said.
Glide bombs have a 70-kilometer range and allow Russia to launch strikes from further behind the front line.
Ukrainian Air Force Spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said the only way Ukraine can combat glide bombs is by shooting down the Su-34 and Su-35 planes that drop the bombs.
“Otherwise we will not have enough means to hunt such bombs separately,” he said on national TV.
Ukrainian officials have long stressed the need for further air defense support as supplies are dwindling due to delays from Ukraine’s key allies.
“Ukraine’s military was forced to withdraw from Avdiivka after Ukrainian soldiers had to ration ammunition due to dwindling supplies as a result of congressional inaction, resulting in Russia’s first notable gains in months," U.S. President Joe Biden said on Feb. 17.
Assistance from the U.S., once Ukraine's largest military donor, has mostly run dry as Republicans in Congress refuse to approve additional funding. The Senate recently advanced a foreign aid bill including $60 billion for Ukraine, but the Republican-led House of Representatives has already voiced strong opposition to the legislation
U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby warned on Feb. 15 that an artillery shortage on Ukraine's front lines could lead to the loss of Avdiivka.
Russian forces launched a heavy assault against Avdiivka in October 2023. The city, which lies only kilometers away from Russian-occupied Donetsk, is largely in ruins due to intense fighting.

Russia’s losses in the area of responsibility of the Tavriia Operational Strategic Group of Forces, which includes the Avdiivka front, comprise 20,500 military personnel since 1 January 2024. Ukraine did not suffer heavy losses while withdrawing its defence forces from Avdiivka.
Source: Dmytro Lykhovii, spokesman for the Tavriia Operational and Strategic Group of Forces, on Ukrainska Pravda’s UP.Pidsumky (Ukrainska Pravda Summary)
Quote from Lykhovii: "Russia’s losses on the Avdiivka front are enormous. My colleagues and I have made an estimate based on archival data from the beginning of this year. This covers not only the Avdiivka front, but also the enemy’s overall losses across the operational area overseen by the Khortytsia Operational and Strategic Group of Forces (presumably the spokesperson was referring to the Tavriia Operational Strategic Group – ed.), which stretches from Avdiivka to the boundary of the Odesa Operational and Strategic Group of Forces in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. But the majority of these numbers relate specifically to the Avdiivka front.
The enemy’s total losses between 1 January and 16 February inclusive amounted to 20,607 personnel, 201 tanks and 492 armoured combat vehicles."
Details: Lykhovii said that Avdiivka "has fulfilled its mission of draining the Russian reserve".
He also said that as of the evening of Saturday, 17 February, "all the units of [Ukraine’s] Defence Forces that were in danger of being encircled in Avdiivka have been transferred to more favourable defensive positions, where they continue to carry out combat missions and to prevent the enemy from advancing further".
Lykhovii stressed that the encirclement of Ukrainian soldiers has been prevented.
He did not specify how many Ukrainian soldiers were killed or taken prisoner by Russian forces while they were withdrawing from Avdiivka. He said this data has yet to be verified and some of those who are currently missing might yet establish contact with their units over the course of the coming days, since Ukrainian forces "had technical difficulties with communication devices" overnight.
Quote from Lykhovii: "This operation did not turn into a tragedy for the Ukrainian forces. It’s nowhere near what happened in Ilovaisk, Mariupol or other instances when our forces ended up encircled. We were not encircled here [...]
The overall number of losses over the course of the day gives us no cause to describe this as something extraordinary. It’s similar to the average daily losses."
Background:
• On the night of 16-17 February, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, announced the withdrawal of Ukrainian units from Avdiivka.
• President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia's losses in Avdiivka were seven times higher than Ukraine's.
• Meanwhile, Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, Commander of the Tavriia Operational and Strategic Group of Forces (OSGF), reported that Ukraine will be appealing to international humanitarian organisations and intermediary countries regarding the "certain number" of Ukrainian soldiers captured in Avdiivka.
• Oleksandr Borodin, spokesman for the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, said that as of the evening of Saturday, 17 February, most Ukrainian forces had left Avdiivka. The brigade is not aware of large numbers of Ukrainian soldiers being taken prisoner by the Russians.

Novaya Gazeta Europe has learnt that the body of Alexey Navalny is in the morgue of the Salekhard District Clinical Hospital. As of Saturday, no autopsy had yet been performed, sources said.
Following Navalny’s sudden death on Friday, his body was initially taken to the town of Labytnangi, 36 kilometres away from the penal colony where he died in the village of Kharp in Russia’s far northern Yamalo-Nenets autonomous district. However, sources say that the body was later on Friday transferred to the District Clinical Hospital in the regional capital of Salekhard.
“Usually the bodies of people who die in prison are taken straight to the Bureau of Forensic Medicine on Glazkova Street, but in this case it was taken to the clinical hospital for some reason," said a paramedic in the Salekhard ambulance service.
“They drove him to the morgue, brought him in, and then stationed two policemen in front of the door. They might as well have put up a sign saying ‘something mysterious is going on here!’ Of course, everyone wanted to know what had happened, what all the secrecy was about and whether they were trying to hide something serious.”
It soon emerged that the body delivered had been that of Alexey Navalny and that his death was “not of criminal nature”, a term used to indicate that firearms were not involved. Word then spread that hospital pathologists had been banned from performing an autopsy, the source added.
“At this point opinion becomes divided,” the paramedic said. “Some said that an order had come from Moscow to await the arrival of specialists from the capital, while others said that the hospital doctors themselves had refused to perform an autopsy. The case is political, and it is not clear how it will turn out. And if you perform an autopsy and receive a direct order to change the result, you can’t get out of it. And you can also be made the guilty party. … But if there was no autopsy, there’s nobody to ask.”
The paramedic also said that he’d been told Navalny’s body showed signs of bruising, and although the bruises did not appear to have been from beatings, Navalny must have still been alive for bruising to appear, he added.
“As an experienced paramedic, I can say that the injuries described by those who saw them appeared to be from convulsions. … If a person is convulsing and others try to hold him down but the convulsions are very strong, then bruising appears. They also said he had a bruise on his chest — the kind that comes from indirect cardiac massage.”
“So they did try to resuscitate him, and he probably died of cardiac arrest,” the paramedic said. “But nobody is saying anything about why he had a cardiac arrest.”

In the span of two days, Ukrainian forces have shot down four Russian fighter jets, a dozen kamikaze drones, and a cruise missile.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) claim to have shot down a fourth Russian fighter aircraft in less than 48 hours. On early Sunday morning, video of aircraft reported to be a Russian Su-34 crashing in the Luhansk region made the rounds of social media.
Ukrainian defenders “brought down” another Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber. It happened this morning, according to Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of the Air Forces of the AFU, cited by the RBC Ukraine news outlet.
Kyiv Post has not been able to independently verify the video.
“The Muscovites have ‘no losses’ again. Around 6:00 this morning, another Su-34 ‘successfully returned’ to base,” Oleshchuk wrote.
The Air Force clarified that this happened on the eastern front.
Artem Lysohor, the Luhansk region governor, posted a sardonic account of the incident on his Telegram channel.
“Yesterday, the pilot of a Russian fighter jet dropped several guided aerial bombs on the positions of Ukrainian defenders,” he wrote.
“And when they fried him, he thought only of himself, directing the damaged plane not into the fields and forests, but to the settlements of the Antratsyt community in the occupied Luhansk region.”
Lysohor added: “Residents of the village of Dyakove saw this Russian fighter jet killing civilians.
“It is reported that he fell on the street where Lyubov Mykolaivna lives.
“The number of victims is currently unknown.”
Ukrainian air defense also destroyed 12 Shahed attack drones and a Kh-59 cruise missile.
Yesterday, Feb. 17, Ukrainian forces reportedly shot down three Russian fighter aircraft – two Su-34s and one Su-35 – over Donetsk Oblast.
The Sukhoi Su-34 (NATO reporting name: Fullback) is Russia’s top, front-line fighter bomber.
It’s primary mission as designed is to launch laser-guided bombs or long-range guided missiles in precision strikes at ground targets, however, it also carries advanced radars and can be fitted with modern air-to-air missiles.
Costing around $36 million a copy, the aircraft is one of the Russian military's most expensive.
The AFU General Staff claims to have shot down 335 Russian military aircraft since Feb. 24, 2022.

Ukraine’s air defense downed 12 Shahed drones, a Su-34 plane, and one Kh-59 missile on the morning of Feb. 18, the Ukrainian Air Force reported.
The plane was shot down at 6 a.m. over eastern Ukraine. The drones and missile were downed in Chernihiv, Sumy, Poltava, Kirovohrad, and Dnipro oblasts during an overnight and morning attack.
During the attack, Russia launched six S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles, three Kh-22 cruise missiles, a Kh-59 guided air missile, and 14 Shahed attack drones.
The Air Force doesn't disclose what targets were hit by the missiles and drones that weren't intercepted.
One drone struck an infrastructure facility in Poltava Oblast, according to the Head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration Philip Pronin.
“This caused a fire, which has already been extinguished. There were no casualties or injuries,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Russian shelling on the evening of Feb. 17 killed one person and injured another in Sumy Oblast. Russian missile strikes also killed at least two people in Sloviansk and Kramatork in Donetsk Oblast on the same evening.
During the afternoon of Feb. 17, Russian aerial bombs killed at least one person and injured five in Kupiansk, Kharkiv Oblast.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and others have advocated passage of the $60 billion in aid at the Munich Security Conference, which coincided with Ukraine withdrawing troops from the eastern city of Avdiivka after months of intense combat.

Ukraine will be able to receive its first F-16 fighter jets in the summer of 2024. According to Foreign Policy, this likely refers to June.
The agency analyzed statements from European leaders at the Munich Security Conference.
"I think that in June, we will see them in Ukraine," said Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anusauskas.
Another European official present in Munich also confirmed these timelines.
"The Ukrainian government expects that 12 pilots will be trained on the fighter jets by the end of the U.S. fiscal year," the authors note.
F-16s for Ukraine
Earlier, Ukraine's allies announced the formation of an aviation coalition to transfer modern F-16 fighter jets to the country. The Netherlands and Denmark lead the coalition.
Recently, it became official that the first group of Ukrainian pilots completed their basic training program in the UK and started training on F-16 fighter jets in Denmark.
At the end of December, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced that the government had decided to prepare the first 18 F-16 fighter jets for transfer to Ukraine.
Rutte also stated that transferring the fighter jets is proceeding according to schedule. He emphasized that Ukraine will receive at least 24 aircraft, possibly more, but not fewer.

quote:As The Ukrainians Fling 50,000 Drones A Month, The Russians Can’t Get Their Drone-Jammers To Work
When Russia-aligned Republicans in the U.S. Congress began blocking U.S. aid to Ukraine starting in October, they deprived Ukrainian forces of one of their main sources of artillery ammunition.
The Ukrainians adapted as best as they could, tapping the growing domestic supply of two-pound first-person-view drones, each packing a pound of explosives. By December, workers in Ukraine were building around 50,000 FPVs a month at a cost of a few hundred dollars apiece.
Ranging as far as two miles from their operators, the tiny drones plink Russian vehicles and even chase down, and blow up, individual Russian soldiers who swat at them with rifles and sticks.
Today the FPV might be the most casualty-producing weapon in the Ukrainian inventory. And the Russians know it. It’s not for no reason they’re bolting radio-jammers onto more and more vehicles. In theory, a jammer should block the radio signal between an FPV and its operator, throwing the drone off course.
The problem, for the Russians, is that their jammers simply don’t work. The first generation of battlefield jammer, the RP-377, mostly failed to stop FPVs. Now the second-generation Volnorez jammer is failing, too.
It’s an open question whether a third generation of jammer, the Saniya, might improve on its predecessors. It’s fair to say it’s an existential question for many Russian troops in Ukraine.
As FPV drones replaced artillery as the most serious threat to Russian ground forces late last year, the Russian military responded by attaching, to its armored vehicles, whatever radio-jammers it had on hand.
At first, that meant RP-377 man-portable jammers, which the Kremlin developed to protect its troops in Syria from radio-detonated bombs. The RP-377 had the advantage of being available in fairly large numbers.
There was some risk the jammers would thwart Ukrainian drone operations. “I saw the spectrograms,” Ukrainian drone expert Serhii Beskrestnov wrote after inspecting a captured RP-377. “The interference is very high quality.”
But “the price for this is a small range of protection,” Beskrestnov added. The RP-377 usually is a backpack system: it draws power from portable batteries rather than from a vehicle’s engine. So when an RP-377 tries to jam multiple frequencies—a power-hungry mode of operation—it sacrifices range.
Yes, a Ukrainian FPV might go blind as it barrels toward its target. But it goes blind when it’s already on course for a crippling hit. The RP-377 works, but it doesn’t work far enough. How far, exactly? Maybe just tens of yards.
This apparently was the weakness in Russian jamming that Ukrainian drone-operators exploited late last year and early this year as they flew their FPVs right through the electromagnetic interference. It’s to their credit that they figured out the RP-377’s vulnerability in time to take advantage of it.
But the Ukrainians’ advantage looked like it might end as the Russians adapted. When the RP-377’s flaws became apparent, the Kremlin began installing more and more purpose-built, vehicle-mounted Volnorez jammers that reportedly have a range of half a mile.
But a Volnorez is useless if it isn’t built right. And by now it’s apparent many of them are very badly made. “Dismantling several burnt-out Volnorez products led to discoveries that left the experts completely surprised,” a Russian blogger wrote in a missive translated by @wartranslated.
“Absolutely poor build quality,” the blogger complained. “The mean time between failures is the same as in children’s transistors.”
Equally troubling, the Volnorez jammers tend to overheat. And their antennae leave a dead zone in a cone above the jammers—a vulnerability “Ukrainians spoke about,” according to the blogger.
So now the Russians are moving on from their practically brand-new Volnorez jammers, which were state of the art mere months ago, and replacing them with even newer Saniya jammers theoretically ranging nearly a mile.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. If the Saniyas are well-made and adequately-powered and actually offer reliable protection, they could begin to blunt Ukraine’s drone advantage, which is one of its few advantages as Russia’s wider war grinds into its third year and Republicans continue to deprive Ukrainian forces of artillery ammunition.
Behalve Finland. Die zijn er al decennialang klaar voor.quote:Op zondag 18 februari 2024 08:25 schreef Aether het volgende:

Ukrainians who came to the UK following the Russian invasion will be able to apply for 18-month extensions to their visas, the government has announced.
Since the invasion, the second anniversary of which is next week, some 200,200 Ukrainians and family members have come to the UK.
New arrivals were granted three years to remain, meaning the first visas were due to expire in March 2025.
It means those on the earliest visas can stay until at least September 2026.
The government said it would provide people with "certainty and stability".
The extension will apply to all three visa schemes set up following the invasion: the Homes for Ukraine scheme, the Ukraine Family Scheme, and the Ukraine Extension Scheme.
Those on the schemes will continue to have the same rights to access work, benefits, healthcare, and education.
Applications for the extensions will be open from early 2025, and people will be able to apply once they are in the last three months of an existing visa.
Migration minister Tom Pursglove said: "Families across the country have opened their homes and their hearts to the people of Ukraine, showing extraordinary generosity, including offering shelter to those fleeing from the horrors of war."
The UK will "continue to provide a safe haven for those fleeing the conflict," he added.
The government also said the extension underlined its "strong belief that Ukraine will be safe again" and the hope of the Ukrainian government that its citizens will "eventually return to the country, when it is safe to do so".
Eduard Fesko, charge d'affaires at the Ukrainian embassy in the UK, said it was a "clear signal" of the UK's support for Ukraine, adding: "We appreciate all the help and assistance that our UK friends so generously provide for the temporarily displaced Ukrainians."
The announcement comes as senior political figures from around the world attend the Munich Security Conference to discuss the biggest global security challenges.
Speaking at the conference on Saturday, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky made an urgent appeal for more weapons, saying they would help avoid a "catastrophic" situation in Europe.
Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron said Britain was "absolutely in the lead" in providing support to Ukraine and urged all of Ukraine's allies, particularly the US, to maintain their own support.
Republicans in the US Congress are currently refusing to pass a $60bn package of aid to Ukraine until more steps are taken to secure the US-Mexico border.
"If you add up our economies, we outmatch Russia 25-to-one," he said. "We've got the ability to give that diplomatic military, economic, moral support. We have just got to make that difference count."
