Kent State Shootings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings

quote:
The Kent State shootings (also known as the May 4 massacre or the Kent State massacre) were the shootings on May 4, 1970 of unarmed college students by members of the Ohio National Guard during a mass protest against the Vietnam War at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Twenty-eight guardsmen fired approximately 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.

Some of the students who were shot had been protesting the Cambodian Campaign, which President Richard Nixon announced during a television address on April 30. Other students who were shot had been walking nearby or observing the protest from a distance.

There was a significant national response to the shootings: hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closed throughout the United States due to a student strike of 4 million students, and the event further affected public opinion, at an already socially contentious time, over the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.

Trump’s Pick to Lead Indian Health Service Withdraws Nomination
quote:
President Trump’s nominee to lead the Indian Health Service has withdrawn his name from consideration for the position, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Humans Services said Wednesday.

The withdrawal of the nominee, Robert Weaver, follows Wall Street Journal reports that said he had inaccurately represented his qualifications to the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs after his nomination in October. Mr. Weaver joins a growing list of Trump nominees who have withdrawn from consideration after questions arose about their fitness for their assigned posts.

Senator Tom Udall, Democrat of New Mexico and the vice chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee, said in a statement that the move seemed “appropriate given the serious questions recently raised about his suitability to lead a vitally important health agency.”

Mr. Udall has not yet received a formal notice of the withdrawal.
SPOILER
The Indian Health Service could not immediately be reached for comment. Neither could Mr. Weaver.

According to The Journal, Mr. Weaver, a member of the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma, claimed that he had previously held a supervisory position at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo. But former hospital officials said that they did not recognize his name, The Journal said, and that they believed Mr. Weaver’s role had involved entry-level duties, such as registering patients.

The Journal later reported that Mr. Weaver, who had asserted his financial management skills to the Senate committee, had failed to perform important financial duties in a recent position.

The Indian Health Service, a branch of the Department for Health and Human Services, provides care for 2.2 million American Indians and Alaska Natives in 36 states. The agency, tasked with providing health services to some of the nation’s most rural regions, has long been plagued by financial and leadership troubles. A 2016 inspection by the Department of Health and Human Services revealed that staffing shortages at some Indian Health Service hospitals “sometimes force the hospital to turn patients away” and affect the ability of the hospitals to “ensure a sanitary environment.”

In a statement Wednesday night, Mr. Udall urged the Trump administration to conduct a more comprehensive review of its next nominee to lead the agency.

“Now the Trump administration must honor its trust responsibilities to American Indians and Alaska Natives and nominate — and fully vet — a director with the strongest possible combination of leadership and fiduciary skills as well as experience running a large public health system,” Mr. Udall’s statement said.

“I urge the administration to work to prioritize upholding the government-to-government relationship by seeking tribal input as it begins the process of selecting a replacement nominee,” it continued. “Indian Country deserves better.”
The Indian Health Service has not had a permanent leader since 2015.

quote:
NY police officers bought sobbing friend-of-the family her plane ticket home

Jordana Judson heard the news that a family friend was killed in the Parkland school shooting near her childhood home. She jumped in a Lyft and raced over to New York’s LaGuardia Airport thinking it might be easier to buy a ticket and get on a flight home if she was there in person.

When her ride dropped her off at the airport early Thursday morning, Judson, 23, stood on the curb sobbing for a moment thinking about her family friend, Meadow Pollack, 18, and her former high school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the site of the deadly rampage.

“She was hysterically crying. We approached her and asked if she was all right,” said New York State Trooper Thomas Karasinski, 26. “She wasn’t able to get a lot of words out, but she was talking about the shooting in Florida.”

Karasinski and his partner, Trooper Robert Troy, who were on duty patrolling the curbside area of the airport, pointed the distraught Judson toward the ticket counter.

Judson made her way inside, and a ticket agent told her a one-way flight that would get her to Meadow’s vigil later that day would cost $700, an expense she couldn’t afford. She called her mother and cried into the phone.

With the phone pressed against her cheek, she looked up and saw the two troopers who had helped her outside by the curb. They were handing the ticket agent their credit cards to pay for her flight.

“I said, ‘You don’t need to do that,’ ” Judson said. “ ‘I can’t let this happen.’ ”

They said: “It’s done. Go be with your family.”

Teenage survivor quits Facebook because of death threats from 'NRA cultists' (Independent UK)
quote:
Shortly after the February 14 school shooting at Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida, the survivors started getting harassed online.

One of them, Cameron Kasky, who is 17 years old, said he just quit Facebook over it, saying he's received death threats from anti-gun control activists.

"Temporarily got off Facebook because there's no character count so the death threats from the @NRA cultists are a bit more graphic than those on twitter," Kasky wrote on Twitter.

A representative for Facebook told INSIDER that it removes harassing content as soon as its moderators are aware of it. "We want Facebook to be a safe and respectful environment," a spokesperson wrote in an email. "Bullying and harassment run counter to those goals, and have no place on Facebook or Messenger. We remove this content as soon as we’re made aware of it."
SPOILER
Following the shooting, Kasky has been outspoken about changing gun laws to prevent school shootings. In an op-ed for CNN, he attacked the National Rifle Association, which lobbies for dismantling gun ownership regulations, and the Republican party, which allies itself with the NRA.

"I'm just a high school student, and I do not pretend to have all of the answers," Kasky wrote. "However, even in my position, I can see that there is desperate need for change — change that starts by folks showing up to the polls and voting all those individuals who are in the back pockets of gun lobbyists out of office."

In the past week, survivors of the shooting — which took 17 lives — have organized to persuade politicians to pass stricter gun control regulations with the #NeverAgain movement. They're planning a March For Our Lives event in Washington, DC, on March 24.

Kasky isn't the only student-turned-protester who's experiencing online harassment. David Hogg, another survivor of the attack, is at the center of a false conspiracy theory circulating in right-wing media that he's a "crisis actor" paid to fight against gun control laws.

Waarom?

The economics of arming America’s schools

quote:
Sitting with students and parents on Tuesday — including some students who were at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week when a shooter killed 17 people — President Trump explored possible ways in which mass shooting incidents at schools could be prevented.

Among them? Arming teachers.
realDonaldTrump twitterde op donderdag 22-02-2018 om 13:26:28 I never said "give teachers guns" like was stated on Fake News @CNN & @NBC. What I said was to look at the possibility of giving "concealed guns to gun adept teachers with military or special training experience - only the best. 20% of teachers, a lot, would now be able to reageer retweet
In the abstract, adding armed staff to schools does seem like it could help curtail mass shooting incidents. Not prevent them, mind you; even Trump’s aim in that quote is ending mass shootings faster, not preventing them. That difference echoes a report prepared by the National School Shield Task Force in 2013. That document, funded by the National Rifle Association, similarly argued that incidents in which other armed individuals had been able to confront school shooters resulted in fewer deaths.

It’s worth considering, though, what Trump is proposing. What does it mean in economic terms for one out of every five teachers to be prepared to engage with an armed individual intent on murdering students at a school? Or, if you prefer, a proposal from former House speaker Newt Gingrich to hire “six to eight” guards to patrol every school. What’s the tab for that?

SPOILER
A fifth of teachers

Data from the Department of Education indicates that there are an estimated 3.1 million public school and 400,000 private-school teachers in the United States. In total, there are about 3.6 million teachers.

One-fifth of that total is 718,000 — a bit fewer than the number of people in the Army and the Navy combined as of last December. We’d essentially be adding 50 percent to the size of the military by mandating that three-quarters of a million people be trained and prepared to take up arms to defend civilians.

The first cost that needs to be considered is training. What sort of training would be required isn’t clear. Do we want to simply teach the teachers how to target an individual and fire a weapon? Or do we want something more expansive?

Let’s say we want the bare minimum, just enough to pass the safety requirement for gun ownership. In Maryland, there’s a company that will charge you $100 for that training. The cost, then, would be about $71.8 million for all of our teachers.

There are groups that do trainings specifically designed to train teachers for active-shooter scenarios. One is the Ohio-based Faculty/Administrator Safety Training & Emergency Response program (FASTER) run by the Buckeye Firearms Foundation. Its program is free for teachers, funded by corporate and individual donors. It includes 26 hours of training over three days and aims to “allow teachers, administrators, and other personnel on-site to stop school violence rapidly and render medical aid immediately.”

In an email to The Post, the group’s program director, Joe Eaton, said that the cost of the training is about $1,000 per trainee. It covers more than just a scenario in which a shooter is on campus, mind you, but that is part of the program.

That more robust training means that the cost for our 718,000 teachers spikes to $718 million. There would almost certainly be some efficiencies of scale that would come into play here — systems would be developed to train teachers quickly and at less cost — but the figure would still likely run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Assuming that this particular school supply is covered by districts, we need to account for the cost of the firearms as well.

Let’s consider the Glock G17, which the manufacturer touts as the world’s most popular pistol. It runs $500 apiece, meaning that our price tag for arming our teachers just went up by $359 million. Maybe Glock, too, would give the Department of Education a discount, perhaps cutting the price in half. That changes the total to $180 million.

Our grand total? If we assume the cheapest training and the discounted Glock, we’re at $251 million to arm 718,000 teachers. If we instead assume the full-price, more expansive training and the full-price firearm, the tab creeps past $1 billion.

Update: At about the same time this story was published, Trump took to Twitter to explain his comments.
realDonaldTrump twitterde op donderdag 22-02-2018 om 13:26:28 I never said “give teachers guns” like was stated on Fake News @CNN & @NBC. If the schools are providing only the guns and not the training, the costs obviously come down — though it seems likely that either you’d need to recruit a lot more military veterans to teach or train a lot more teachers to shoot in order to hit Trump’s 20 percent density goal.

It’s also worth noting that “giving teachers concealed guns” doesn’t seem to conflict with “give teachers guns.”

Six to eight guards

What about Gingrich’s proposal? How much would that cost?

As of the 2013-2014 school year, there were about 132,000 public and private schools in the United States, including about 24,000 public high schools. Six to eight guards in those schools means between 791,000 and 1 million guards in place — a bit lower than the size of the armed forces.

To figure out the cost of guarding those schools, we need to know how much those positions would cost. A 2013 analysis of adding armed guards to schools completed by professor Ned Hill of Cleveland State University estimated that school resource officers would run between $75,000 and $97,000 annually. That’s about $80,000 to $103,000 today.

The cost of those officers, then, would run between $63 billion (six guards per school at $80,000 a year) and $109 billion (eight guards at $103,000).

Let’s assume, though, that we don’t need as many guards in non-high schools. Still some, of course; since 2000 there have been at least 61 shootings at elementary and middle schools in the United States in addition to at least 68 shootings at high schools. If we weight the number of guards needed toward older students, we need between 367,000 and 490,000 guards and the range of costs ends up between $29 billion and a bit over $50 billion.

Hill’s analysis, incidentally, estimated that fewer guards were needed — about 156,000 total — and calculated a price tag of between $12 billion and $15 billion.

Annually.

Other considerations

This is also not a comprehensive look at the costs involved. There’s ammunition, for example, and the costs of annual training programs or hiring new teachers and guards.

And of course there’s insurance. Insurance rates increase when armed guards are hired. Why? In part because the risks of accidents also increase.

“When insurers evaluate the use of armed officers, they quite often see risks outweigh the benefits for the average company or organization,” Tory Brownyard wrote for Security magazine in 2013, “risks that have a significant impact on both the availability and cost of insurance coverage.” Some insurers recommend against armed guards entirely.

The added cost is hard to estimate without knowing what schools currently pay, but the increase would likely not be minimal.

What none of the figures above include is the psychological cost of arming teachers. After Trump’s statement was reported, some weighed in on social media.

JoshuaGrubbsPhD twitterde op woensdag 21-02-2018 om 23:51:00 Guys, I’m a college professor.I’ve also been shooting guns my entire life and own multiple guns now.I don’t trust myself to be able to capably defend a classroom against a shooter, and I’m a good shot. Why would we expect teachers everywhere to bear this responsibility? reageer retweet
PatrickIber twitterde op donderdag 22-02-2018 om 01:30:13 Speaking as a former classroom teacher: if we arm teachers, 1) teachers will accidentally kill or injure themselves and students; 2) weapons will be stolen; 3) a teacher will shoot a student having a fight or something; 4) teacher suicide is going way way way up. reageer retweet
Certainly some teachers would embrace the idea of arming and preparing themselves — FASTER has a steady stream of clients — but many wouldn’t. Others noted that schools are already strapped for resources and questioned whether adding firearms and training to the mix made sense.

Remember: These costs would ultimately trickle down to taxpayers. About 100 million taxable returns were filed with the IRS for the 2015 fiscal year, 41.5 million of which were from married couples filing jointly. This is a rough division, but it suggests that the price of arming teachers would cost 121 million taxpayers between $2 and $9 to train and arm a fifth of the America’s teachers (excluding the other costs above) or between $96 and $900 annually for six to eight armed guards to be stationed in schools.

To prevent what, despite the attention these tragedies receive, are still happily rare incidents.

McMaster could leave WH after months of tension with Trump

quote:
With tensions flaring between President Donald Trump and national security adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, the Pentagon is considering options that would allow the President to potentially move the three-star general out of his current role and back into the military, according to half a dozen defense and administration officials.

A search is quietly being conducted by the Pentagon to see if there is a four-star military job suited for McMaster, these officials said.

Several sources told CNN that the push for a replacement comes after months of personal tension between McMaster and Trump. The task of easing McMaster out of his role as national security adviser presents a unique challenge for the White House.

While administration officials have privately said the preference is to move McMaster into a position within the Army or Defense Department that qualifies as a promotion, some within the Pentagon feel he has become politicized in the White House and have expressed reservations about him returning to the military in a prominent role. Some defense officials caution that the President could also go as far as not to offer him a fourth star and force him to retire.

Poll: Few voters report seeing bigger paychecks after tax changes

quote:
Most voters aren’t noticing more money in their paychecks under the new tax law, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.

Just a quarter of registered voters, 25 percent, say they have noticed an increase in their paycheck, the poll shows. A majority, 51 percent, say they have not.

Among employed voters — those working in the private and public sectors, plus those who are self-employed — a larger percentage, 37 percent, have noticed an uptick on their pay stubs. But 53 percent say they haven’t.

Self-identified Republicans are more likely to say they have seen a larger paycheck under the new law (32 percent) than Democrats (21 percent) or independents (22 percent).

Opponents have attacked the new tax law as primarily benefiting the wealthy and corporations, and there is some evidence in the new poll that higher-income voters are seeing more benefits in the early days of the law’s enactment.

“Our polling shows high-income earners are more likely to have noticed an increase in their paychecks as a result of the tax bill," said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult’s co-founder and chief research officer. “For example, 40 percent of voters who earn more than $100,000 said they have noticed a pay increase in the past several weeks. In contrast, 33 percent of voters who earn between $50,000 and $100,000 and 16 percent of voters who earn under $50,000 said the same.”

While other public surveys suggest the tax law is getting more popular over time, the POLITICO/Morning Consult poll support is stagnant, though still exceeding opposition. In the new poll, 45 percent of voters support the law enacted late last year, and 35 percent oppose it. The remaining 19 percent are undecided or have no opinion.(....)

Ex-Trump Staffer Rick Gates Fires His Lawyer in Russia Probe

Paul Manafort’s long-time deputy has terminated Tom Green, the Washington attorney who reportedly tried to get him a plea deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Former Trump campaign official Rick Gates has fired his lawyer, The Daily Beast has learned. And, contrary to recent media reports, Gates is not about to make a deal with the special counsel Robert Mueller, according to sources familiar with the matter.

CNN and The Los Angeles Times reported earlier this month that Gates was on the cusp of signing a plea deal with Special Counsel Bob Mueller’s team, and noted that Gates’ lawyer—Tom Green of Sidley Austin—is known for his work negotiating such pleas. If Gates had started cooperating with Mueller, it would certainly have been a boon to the prosecution.

Instead, Gates—for the time being, at least—isn’t flipping. And Green is out, replaced with Barry Pollack, of Miller Chevalier, according to sources familiar with the matter. Neither Green nor Pollack immediately returned a request for comment.

Over the years, Gates has operated closely with former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort. Together, they worked for Viktor Yanukovich, the Putin-friendly former president of Ukraine. That work—for which the duo allegedly received millions in secret payments—generated controversy during President Donald Trump’s campaign, and ultimately contributed to Manafort’s firing from Team Trump. It also drew the special counsel’s attention.

A grand jury indicted both men on a number of charges last December, including “conspiracy against the United States.” The charges were related to their work in Ukraine, and included allegations of sophisticated financial crimes.

On Thursday, the special counsel’s team filed a new indictment against Gates and Manafort, including allegations that the men failed to reveal information on tax filings related to foreign income.

And so it begins... de eerste bank stapt er uit:

First National Bank Of Omaha To Dump NRA-Branded Visa Credit Card
quote:
The First National Bank of Omaha has decided to cut ties with the National Rifle Association in a national moment of reckoning over gun control.

Citing complaints from customers, the company’s First Bankcard division will no longer issue NRA-branded Visa credit cards touted by the gun-rights group as a special benefit of membership after the current contract between the two parties expires.

“Customer feedback has caused us to review our relationship with the NRA. As a result, First National Bank of Omaha will not renew its contract with the National Rifle Association to issue the NRA Visa Card,” a First National Bank spokesman told HuffPost by email Thursday.
SPOILER
The spokesman did not immediately respond to a follow-up question on when the contract will expire.

Members of the group are still able to purchase NRA-branded prepaid Visa debit cards because those are made available through a separate entity, NetSpend, which is currently “reviewing the relationship” it has with the NRA.

On Wednesday, a Visa spokeswoman stressed that the company strives to make its payment services available to everyone.

“Visa has no contractual or financial relationship with the NRA,” the spokeswoman said. “Visa co-branded cards do not represent an endorsement by Visa of that cause or organization. We strive to make our payment services available to all people in all places, for uses consistent with local, national and international laws.”

The Visa card was part of a number of benefits offered to NRA members, including FedEx shipping discounts and savings on rental cars from Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and other major providers. By partnering with third parties, the NRA is also able to offer discounts on hotels and airfare, prescription drugs, insurance and other products and services. According to an NRA blog post, the credit card offered 5 percent back on gas and purchases made at sporting goods stores.

An NRA webpage that detailed the benefits of the card was pulled midday on Wednesday, leaving an error page in its wake. The NRA did not respond to HuffPost’s multiple requests for comment.

The gun-rights group, which operates a powerful lobbying arm, has been a particular target of outrage by many young activists after last week’s shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, left 17 dead.

Parkland Survivor: ‘I’ve Never Been So Unimpressed By A Person’ After Trump Call (HuffPo)
quote:
President Donald Trump has spoken to and met with several survivors and family members of victims of last week’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Not all of them were happy to hear from him.

Samantha Fuentes, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School― where a former student killed 17 people after opening fire on the campus― was at the hospital when the president called her. Fuentes, who was shot twice, told the New York Times that the president “didn’t make me feel better in the slightest.”

“He said he heard that I was a big fan of his, and then he said, ‘I’m a big fan of yours too.’ I’m pretty sure he made that up,” she told the Times. “Talking to the president, I’ve never been so unimpressed by a person in my life.”
SPOILER
In addition to speaking to victims by phone, the president also met with Parkland families as well as other victims of gun violence at the White House on Wednesday. He received public backlash after a photo from the listening session showed him holding a notecard with a reminder to tell attendees, “I hear you.”

Trump organized the listening session after declining to attend a CNN-hosted town hall event with survivors and parents, a decision that some Parkland students called cowardly.

“The fact that [Trump] has organized [the listening session] just proves that he’s scared of us and that he doesn’t want to have to face us,” Emma Gonzalez told CNN.

“If Donald Trump wants to listen to us, he should have taken the first invitation,” Alex Wind said. “We are not going to come to him. He is going to need to come to us.”

Florida Sens. Marco Rubio (R) and Bill Nelson (D), as well as NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch, also attended the CNN event, though Florida Gov. Rick Scott also skipped it.

The town hall was full of passion and outrage, much of it directed at politicians for what families saw as inaction on gun control. Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jamie was killed in the Parkland attack, told Rubio that, “your comments and the comments of the President were pathetically weak.”

Parkland survivors were also quick to criticize Trump’s defense of the National Rifle Association in the wake of the shooting. After the president tweeted that NRA leaders are “great people” and “patriots,” student Cameron Kasky said it was “the WORST POSSIBLE THING TO SAY.”

“Would American patriots try to buy our elections and our children’s lives by lobbying for lax gun laws even after massacres?,” noted another student, David Hogg

The ATF Is Getting Crushed Under The Weight Of The Gun Industry
quote:
The U.S. gun industry has grown explosively over the past decade, leaving the federal agency responsible for regulating it, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, struggling to keep up with the rising flow of guns into the civilian market. And if the ATF stumbles, it could mean serious consequences for public safety.

Production at U.S. gun companies more than doubled under the Obama administration, with manufacturing totals going from 5.5 million firearms in 2009 to 11.5 million in 2016, the latest year for which federal data are available. Gun sales appeared to go up by similar margins over that period. At the same time, the number of federally licensed gun dealers increased by about 9,000, topping out at 56,754 in 2016, while the number of federally licensed firearms manufacturers more than tripled, according to the ATF.

“As an organization, personnel wise, ATF is smaller than the Broward County Sheriff’s department, which would be law enforcement in the Miami area,” said David Chipman, a former ATF agent who now serves as senior policy adviser for the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. “The last aircraft carrier cost $13 billion, so that’d be like 10 years of ATF budgets.”
SPOILER
The ATF’s budget, which includes funds for monitoring the network of gun manufacturers, wholesalers and dealers, has increased only slightly amid the recent boom, and it has remained unchanged at $1.25 billion over the last few years. The agency hasn’t had a Senate-confirmed director since 2015, and, as The New York Times reported on Thursday, the National Rifle Association has been part of a campaign to ensure that the ATF remains a small agency grappling with a wide-reaching set of duties, including prosecuting gun crimes, combating gun violence and trafficking, and regulating firearm commerce in the U.S.

In 2016, the ATF employed 821 industry operations investigators, who were in charge of regulating more than 100,000 federal firearms licensees, or FFLs. These agents periodically inspect gun dealers and manufacturers to make sure their businesses comply with federal law. ATF investigators review paperwork at gun stores to confirm sales have been legally conducted and properly recorded, so firearms can be traced if they’re used in a crime. For gun manufacturers, the ATF examines inventory and transaction records to make sure the company has distributed its products according to the law.

“The inspector comes in, they take a sample of the forms ― the key is it’s got to be a random sample because they’re not looking at them all ― he looks for troubling answers that shouldn’t be there. If he finds them, he tries to get them resolved or he refers them to law enforcement to get resolved,” said Howard Wolfe, a former ATF supervisor.

By catching illegal sales, straw purchases and other improper dealings, these inspections keep guns out of the hands of those who are not allowed to own them. The inspections also allow the ATF to proactively identify and crack down on the relatively small number of bad actors who are responsible for a disproportionate number of crime guns.

“Although most gun dealers are law abiding and their compliance is pretty good, when you have a dirty dealer, they can push out so many guns into the criminal market quickly, so you’d want to be on top of that immediately,” Chipman said.

But with meager resources and no law specifying how frequently the ATF must inspect firearms licensees, or even mandating that it conduct the inspections at all, the agency is fighting to keep up. From 2007 to 2012, the ATF failed to inspect 58 percent of all FFLs, according to a 2013 Office of the Inspector General report. In 2016, the agency estimated that it conducted 9,790 inspections, only about 7 percent of the 137,464 active licensees.

“You’ve got many dealers that haven’t been inspected in five or 10 years, and that can have dramatic impacts,” Chipman said. “I don’t know about you, but I’d probably shy away from eating at a restaurant that was only health-inspected once a year.”

Of those 137,000 federal licensees, more than 57,000 are firearms collectors. The ATF’s failure to inspect those collectors is less of a concern to Wolfe, because they’re rarely the source of guns used in crimes. But Wolfe admitted that keeping tabs on gun dealers alone remains difficult.

“The FFL license is good for three years, so ATF’s goal is to get each dealer inspected once every three years, but I doubt if they’re making it because there are just way more firearms licensees than there are inspectors,” he said. “The more records an inspector has to look at, the harder his job is. He’s got to do more statistical sampling, he’s got to cut back to a number of records he can actually look at, which increases the chances that he could miss something.”

Although there has been some discussion of mandating routine ATF inspections for each licensee over a certain period, Wolfe said that it would be impossible for inspectors to abide by such a standard with the agency in its current financial shape.

“The powers that be need to realize that if they demand a higher number of inspections with the same number of people, they’re going to get lower quality inspections, and that means things are going to get missed,” he said.

The ATF has pleaded for more funding over the past few years in order to patch up some of these holes.

“The growth in firearms commerce is an external challenge that has strained ATF’s ability to meet the needs of the firearms industry and the citizens of the United States,” the agency wrote in a recent budget request for fiscal year 2019.

“As the volume of firearms commerce continues to increase, the number of individual firearms records and transactions that FFLs maintain has significantly increased, leading to lengthier inspection times,” the document explained.

In its request, the ATF calls specific attention to the lack of timely inspections of FFLs, saying it “presents a significant risk to public safety.”

For the time being, however, the agency doesn’t appear to be getting much help on the regulatory front.

President Donald Trump’s recently released 2019 budget proposal requests an additional $66.6 million for the ATF. The largest increase would go to bolstering the agency’s ability to process applications for equipment regulated under the 1984 National Firearms Act. These items include gun silencers, machine guns and short-barreled rifles, which have surged in popularity in the last decade.

If the federal government is truly committed to addressing gun violence and responsibly regulating a rapidly growing gun industry, it could start by investing in the ATF, Chipman said.

“We can’t have a strategy of trying to win gunfights and punishing people who do bad things really seriously. We have to be on the front end and work together to make sure these guns never get into the wrong hands in the first place.”

Nieuwe districtenverdeling Pennsylvania is "beter dan we durfden hopen" (NYTimes)
quote:
Few people expected that the Pennsylvania congressional map, which the state Supreme Court ordered redrawn to undo Republican gerrymandering, would prove to be as favorable to Democrats as the one adopted by the court on Monday.

Perhaps the easiest way to convey the cause for surprise: The new map is better for Democrats — by nearly every measure — than the maps that Democrats themselves proposed.

All four Democratic map proposals reflected an earnest effort to reach a compromise with Republicans. Democrats did not believe it was realistic to demand a truly favorable map, since it would require a series of Democratic-leaning choices. And the court order did not specify that the maps should aim for partisan balance, which might have justified a more Democratic map.

But apparently, a more favorable map was quite realistic; after all, it is now a reality, one that gives a significant boost to Democratic hopes of retaking the House. It’s a reality because the newly adopted map consistently makes subtle choices that nudge districts in the direction of Democrats.
SPOILER
Many of those choices are easy to spot on a map. Every potentially competitive Republican-held district juts out to add Democratic areas, like adding York to the 10th District, Lansdale to the First District, Reading to the Sixth District, Stroudsburg to the Seventh District, South Philadelphia to the Fifth District, or Mount Lebanon and Penn Hills to the 17th.

There are also subtle choices that are harder to see. They’re less about picking and choosing municipalities and more about how to group counties. These choices also often work to the advantage of Democrats, like the decision to center the 12th District in Beaver rather than in Butler County, or to have the Fifth District, rather than the Fourth or the First, take population in Philadelphia.

Any of these decisions can be justified. It is also possible, although unlikely and unproven, that only this combination of choices yields the absolute minimum number of split counties or municipalities, the key criterion of the court order.

But in all of these cases, there were Republican-leaning alternatives of seemingly comparable merit. Collectively, it’s a pattern of augmenting Democratic strength, inching the statewide map closer to partisan parity.

This does not necessarily mean the map amounts to a “Democratic gerrymander,” as some have suggested. Over all, it admirably adheres to traditional nonpartisan redistricting criteria, like compactness and the avoidance of unnecessary county splits. But the map makes Democratic-tilting choices so consistently that it is hard not to wonder whether it was part of an intentional effort to achieve partisan balance in a state that is fairly evenly divided.

It would be somewhat surprising, at least to me, if the court drew this map without that goal in mind. Nathaniel Persily, the Stanford professor who helped draw the map, has been barred by the court from discussing it.

A series of pro-Democratic choices would be necessary to create statewide partisan balance, since lopsided winning margins in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh put Democrats at a considerable disadvantage in translating their votes to seats statewide. In fact, the new map still slightly advantages the Republicans with respect to the statewide popular vote.

Perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise if the court strove for partisan symmetry in the context of a partisan gerrymandering case. But the court order did not say that the maps should strive for partisan balance, and it seems that’s the reason Democrats did not strive for it, either.

Michael McDonald, an associate professor at the University of Florida, suggests Democrats held back from greater ambition in part because they were protecting incumbents. But there was only one plausibly vulnerable Democratic incumbent to protect, Matt Cartwright, and there is little reason to believe the effort to protect him weakened the Democratic proposals.

Mr. Cartwright’s new district voted for President Trump by 10 points; in the Democratic proposals, the district voted for Mr. Trump by an average of nine points. Just as important, even a concerted effort to protect him would have little effect on the overall statewide map. It would be enough to flip the old 15th District from Mr. Trump to Hillary Clinton (going by 2016 results) but no more. And it wouldn’t flip the 15th District in the other contests where Democrats generally fared better, like the 2012 presidential election.

The map comes close to maximizing the number of Democratic opportunities while complying with the court’s order to minimize county, municipality or precinct splits except to make sure each district has about the same number of people. Perhaps the only plausible way to substantially improve Democratic chances from here would be to split the city of Pittsburgh, an unlikely choice given the requirement to avoid unnecessarily splitting municipalities.

Over all, it’s a huge lift to Democrats’ chances. In this political environment, they’d probably be favored to gain around four seats in the state, up from the two they were favored to carry before. They are overwhelming favorites to win the new versions of the old Seventh and modest favorites to win the old Sixth and 15th, with very good additional opportunities in the old Eighth and 12th, and two long-shot options in the old Third and Fourth.

Alone, the approximately two-seat shift toward the Democrats improves the party’s chance of reclaiming the House by around 5 percent, and even more if the race remains so competitive heading into Election Day. It further diminishes the already deteriorating Republican structural advantages — including incumbency and geography — that have long been the key to G.O.P. hopes of surviving a so-called wave election in the House.

At the beginning of the cycle, it was hard to identify more than a dozen national races where Democrats would have a 50-50 or better chance to win in a wave election. After this decision — and months of strong Democratic recruitment and a wave of Republican retirements — it’s a lot easier to come up with the two dozen seats they need to flip the House. Depending on how recruitment shakes out, five of the party’s best 24 opportunities might now be in Pennsylvania.

quote:
Superintendent threatens to suspend students protesting gun laws. But that’s not legal. (WaPo)

The superintendent of a Texas public school district is drawing harsh criticism after issuing a written threat Tuesday to suspend any students who take part in demonstrations about gun violence after the school shooting in Florida last week.

Curtis Rhodes, the superintendent of the school district in Needville, a small town southwest of Houston, wrote a letter to students and parents that was distributed Tuesday on the social media page for the town’s high school. It began with a reference to the protests around the country after a shooting in Parkland, Fla., left 17 people dead.

“Please be advised that the Needville ISD will not allow a student demonstration during school hours for any type of protest or awareness!!” Rhodes wrote. “Should students choose to do so, they will be suspended from school for 3 days and face all the consequences that come along with an out of school suspension. Life is all about choices and every choice has a consequence whether it be positive or negative. We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved.”

Rhodes — a registered Republican, according to public records — said parental notes would make no difference. “Respect yourself,” Rhodes wrote, “and please understand that we are here for an education and not a political protest.”
SPOILER
The move touched off an outcry after students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School called on elected officials to curb gun violence. And it comes as schools around the country are having difficult conversations about campus security amid the regular occurrence of school shootings.

Constitutional scholars described Rhodes’s threats as a blatant violation of free-speech rights.

“It’s a quintessential First Amendment violation, and most Americans have an instinct about that,” Heidi Li Feldman, a professor at Georgetown Law, said in an interview. “What’s really weird about this is that they announced they will suspend people over the content of their off-campus protest. Content-based restrictions on speech are anathema to the First Amendment. So this looks like a total problem.”

Rhodes did not respond to an emailed request for comment. His voice-mail box at the school was full and the high school’s Facebook page was no longer available on Tuesday night.

Other schools have sought to curtail student protests as well, though in less blunt terms. Steven Walts, the superintendent of schools in Virginia’s Prince William County, also threatened students with disciplinary measures for missing school for protests over gun control.

“PWCS recognizes your right to free speech and to protest, but these rights do not extend to disrupting classes or to leaving school,” he wrote in a letter to parents Wednesday. “Students who cause disruptions or leave school without authorization will face disciplinary consequences, in keeping with the PWCS Code of Behavior.”

Feldman said that disciplinary measures for missing school and other policy violations must be handed out uniformly — and not just for those who are protesting — to be legally sound.

Feldman said that Rhodes’s move was reminiscent of an Iowa school district’s attempt to prevent students from wearing black armbands in protest of the Vietnam War in the 1960s, which prompted a challenge that resulted in a landmark Supreme Court ruling, Tinker v. Des Moines.

Officials from the city’s school district had sent 13-year-old Mary Beth Tinker home from school for wearing the armband and later suspended four other students at the school. The Supreme Court sided overwhelmingly with the students, ruling that students — and teachers, for that matter — do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”

Rhodes has been at the center of legal disputes before.

In 2008, a decision he made to forbid a Native American kindergarten student from wearing long hair was ruled to be a violation of the child’s right to religious freedom twice, by federal district and appeals courts.

“We’re not going to succumb to everything and just wash away our policies and procedures,” he told the Houston Press about his stance in the case, describing Needville as a place of tradition.

“A school district is a reflection of the community,” he said. “We’ve consistently been very conservatively dressed, very conservatively disciplined. It’s no secret what our policy is: You’ll cut your hair to the right point. You’ll tuck in your shirt. You’ll have a belt.”

https://kotaku.com/trump-(...)tm_medium=Socialflow

quote:
Today during a meeting on school safety at the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that violent video games are partly responsible for school shootings.

His train of thought was hard to follow—as it often is—so here’s the full comment:

“We have to look at the internet, because a lot of bad things are happening to young kids and young minds, and their minds are being formed, and we have to do something about maybe what they’re seeing and how they’re seeing it. And also video games. I’m hearing more and more people say the level of violence on video games is really shaping young people’s thoughts. And you go one further step and that’s the movies. You see these movies, and they’re so violent, a kid is able to see the movie if sex isn’t involved, but killing is involved, and maybe we need to put a rating system for that.”

Blaming video games for gun violence isn’t anything new for Trump who, after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, tweeted, “Video game violence & glorification must be stopped—it is creating monsters!” His comments also echo those made by other Republican politicians, including the governor of Kentucky, who said last week on a radio talk show that violent video games were responsible for desensitizing people to the value of human life. It’s a familiar scapegoat many of us have been hearing for decades, one which often acts like a smokescreen to deflect responsibility away from the Second Amendment and lax gun laws.

The last major attempt to try and regulate violent video games came in the form of a 2005 California law backed by then Democratic assemblyman Leland Yee. It sought to criminalize the sale of violent games to minors, but was blocked from taking effect when groups like the ESA and Entertainment Merchants Association sued. The law was then eventually eventually shot down by the Supreme Court which found that it violated the First Amendment.

Rick Gates, Trump Campaign Aide, to Plead Guilty in Mueller Inquiry and Cooperate

quote:
A former top adviser to Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign indicted by the special counsel was expected to plead guilty as soon as Friday afternoon, according to two people familiar with his plea agreement, a move that signals he is cooperating with the investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

The adviser, Rick Gates, is a longtime political consultant who once served as Mr. Trump’s deputy campaign chairman. The plea deal could be a significant development in the investigation — a sign that Mr. Gates plans to offer incriminating information against his longtime associate and the former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, or other members of the Trump campaign in exchange for a lighter punishment.

The deal comes as the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, has been raising pressure on Mr. Gates and Mr. Manafort with dozens of new charges of money laundering and bank fraud that were unsealed on Thursday. Mr. Mueller first indicted both men in October, and both pleaded not guilty.

Mr. Gates’s primary concern has been protecting his family, both emotionally and financially, from the prospect of a drawn-out trial, according to a person familiar with his defense strategy who was not authorized to publicly discuss the case and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

SPOILER
If Mr. Manafort continues to fight the charges in a trial, testimony from Mr. Gates could give Mr. Mueller’s team a first-person account of the criminal conduct that is claimed in the indictments — a potential blow to Mr. Manafort’s defense strategy.

The indictments detailed a wide-ranging scheme by Mr. Gates and Mr. Manafort to hide from American authorities millions of dollars they had earned as political consultants in Ukraine. The men worked in various capacities with Viktor F. Yanukovych, the onetime Ukrainian president and a longtime ally of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.

Mr. Mueller’s team found that more than $75 million passed through offshore accounts, and that Mr. Manafort laundered more than $30 million to pay for real estate and luxury goods in the United States. Mr. Gates transferred more than $3 million from the offshore accounts, court documents show.

After their work was disclosed in news reports in August 2016, when the two men were working for the Trump campaign, they “developed a false and misleading cover story” to distance themselves from Ukraine, according Mr. Mueller’s prosecutors.

The court papers unsealed Thursday describe an intricate scheme by Mr. Manafort and Mr. Gates, trying to shield tens of millions of dollars from the American tax authorities by transferring the funds through foreign bank accounts, including in Cyprus and the Seychelles.

“Manafort and Gates hid the existence and ownership of the foreign companies and bank accounts, falsely and repeatedly reporting to their tax preparers and to the United States that they had no foreign bank accounts,” the new indictment said.

The work the two men did for their firm, Davis Manafort, connected them to numerous people with ties to the Kremlin. One was Oleg Deripaska, an aluminum magnate and an ally of Mr. Putin. Mr. Deripaska has been denied a visa to travel to the United States because of allegations that he is linked to organized crime operations, claims he has denied.

In 2008, Mr. Gates took over the firm’s duties in Eastern Europe, where he worked on business development and contract negotiations.

Besides the charges against Mr. Manafort and Mr. Gates, the special counsel’s team has secured guilty pleas from two of Mr. Trump’s advisers. Michael T. Flynn, the president’s first national security adviser, and George Papadopoulos, a foreign policy aide during the campaign, have both pleaded guilty to lying to the F.B.I. and agreed to cooperate with the inquiry.

Omdat Trump anders weinig indruk maakt.

No wonder Wayne LaPierre is freaking out
(WaPo)
quote:
I had supposed President Trump was causing only his opponents to freak out, not his supporters. Then I heard Wayne LaPierre.

To see the National Rifle Association boss speak this week at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference was to see a man in urgent need of mental-health intervention. He turned a conventional speech about guns (specifically, the need for more of them in schools) into a paranoid fantasy about a socialist takeover of the United States.

He saw a “tidal wave” of “European-style socialists bearing down upon us,” creating a “captive society,” eliminating “resistance,” making a “list” in a cloud database of those who spank their children, expunging the “fundamental concept of moral behavior,” controlling speech through “safe zones.”

With this “new socialist wave in America,” he said, “it’s just a short hop to the systematic destruction of our most basic freedoms.”

Had LaPierre fallen on his head and awakened in 1964? All that was missing was for him to quote General Jack D. Ripper in “Dr. Strangelove” on “the international communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.”

And just who is perpetrating this red invasion, 27 years after the Soviet Union fell? Our billionaire president, who with his Cabinet and staff of billionaires and Goldman Sachs executives just secured a $1.5 trillion tax cut for the rich? The Republican-controlled Congress, which seeks to dismantle the social-safety net and business regulations? The pro-business majority on the Supreme Court?
SPOILER
LaPierre singled out three billionaire capitalists to blame for the socialist revolution: George Soros, Michael Bloomberg and Tom Steyer. But he saw conspirators everywhere in the government — Trump’s government: the FBI (with its “corruption” and “rogue leadership”) the Justice Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the intelligence agencies. He also blamed the Democrats, media, Hollywood, universities, classrooms, Black Lives Matter, elites and Keith Ellison.

Even the CPAC audience seemed to be stunned by this unhinged time-traveler from the Cold War. “You know, I hear a lot of quiet in this room, and I sense your anxiety,” he said. “And you should be anxious, and you should be frightened.”

LaPierre was so frightened and anxious that CPAC wouldn’t list a time for his speech in advance, to avoid protests. He travels with a huge security entourage, even though his opponents eschew guns. Does he think he will be pelted with sprouted quinoa?

And it isn’t just LaPierre. His group’s spokeswoman, Dana Loesch, exhorted the CPAC crowd to turn against reporters in the room, saying “many in the legacy media love mass shootings” because “crying white mothers are ratings gold.”

Nor is it just CPAC. Jack Kingston, formerly a mild-mannered and sensible Republican member of Congress, went on social media and TV this week to echo a conspiracy theory that the grieving students in Parkland are leftist stooges.

I am empathetic. None of us are at our best these days. We are on edge — even those who like Trump. We can’t help it; it’s in our brain chemistry.

A new book by neuropsychologist William Stixrud and my friend Ned Johnson provides an explanation. The book, “The Self-Driven Child,” explains how calm parents give their kids more sense of control and help them perform better.

The science is simple. If you are calm, your executive functions handled by the brain’s prefrontal cortex — organizing, problem-solving, self-control, decision-making — perform well. If you are overly stressed, those functions decline as your brain floods with cortisol. Stress is contagious, and if you are in the presence of somebody who is out of control — a parent, an employer or, say, a president — your own executive functions decline.

“It’s a terrible thing for a chief executive of anything to be fear-mongering or emotionally reactive,” Johnson explains, “because all the bright capable people around you become less bright and less capable if they’re overly stressed.”

You don’t have to be the focus of the person’s ire or in the person’s physical presence for the stress to spread. A 2014 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that those who watched six hours or more of media about the Boston Marathon bombings reported higher stress than those present at the bombings. And Trump is almost a perfect stress-inducing machine, hitting all the buttons that University of Montreal psychiatry professor Sonia Lupien lists as causes of stress: novelty, unpredictability, perceived threat to safety or ego, and a low sense of control.

In theory, some who support Trump would be less affected, because they might feel comforted by an I-alone-can-fix-it authority figure. But, as poor Wayne LaPierre shows, no one is immune.

Being led by a man who rages out of control makes all of us — friend and foe alike — more like that ourselves.

quote:
19 GOP lawmakers urge Ryan to allow vote on stricter gun background checks

Nineteen House Republicans on Friday urged House Speaker Paul Ryan to hold a vote on a bill that pushes for stronger background checks on those seeking to buy firearms, a little more than a week after the deadly school shooting in Florida.

“Background checks are the first line of defense in law enforcement’s efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, domestic abusers and those deemed dangerously mentally ill,” Rep. Leonard Lance (R-N.J.), one of the signers of the letter to Ryan, said in a statement.

SPOILER
The 19 Republicans calling on Ryan for action are largely centrist and are vulnerable in their bids for re-election this fall.

The letter refers to a bill that was proposed last year after a fatal shooting at a Texas church that left 25 people dead. The bill focuses primarily on background checks, but conservatives are unwilling to back it unless it includes so-called conceal-carry legislation backed by the National Rifle Association.

A bill that grouped the two proposals passed the House in December, setting up a potential fight with Senate Republicans. House GOP leaders have promised that the conceal-carry provision won’t be removed, meaning the bill would actually loosen gun restrictions instead of strengthening them.

The letter concludes that the bill would improve communication between state and local agencies when handling background checks.

“Let us pass this legislation next week and take an important step toward making our Country safer from gun violence,” the letter says.

The long-running debate over reducing gun violence has taken on extra momentum since a gunman killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14. Students around the country have mobilized in an effort to pressure President Donald Trump and lawmakers to do more to protect schools and prevent attacks.

Parkland Survivor To Melania Trump: Stop Donald Trump Jr. From Cyberbullying Me (HuffPo)
quote:
A 14-year-old survivor of the recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida, has pleaded with first lady Melania Trump to stop her stepson Donald Trump Jr. from bullying her and her family online.

“You say that your mission as first lady is to stop cyber bullying,” tweeted Lauren Hogg. “Don’t you think it would have been smart to have a convo with your stepson @DonaldJTrumpJr before he liked a post about a false conspiracy theory which ... put a target on my back?”

“I’ve been getting all these horrible messages from Nazis and white supremacists and I woke up this morning and remembered that Melania Trump’s mission was to fight cyberbullying,” Hogg told Huffpost on Friday. “That’s what’s happening to me: cyberbullying. I thought she could do something about Donald Trump Jr.”
SPOILER
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump’s eldest son “liked” two tweets promoting a conspiracy theory about Lauren’s 17-year-old brother, David Hogg, another shooting survivor. The cooked-up conspiracy claimed he had been coached to speak out against guns by his former FBI agent father to “cover” for the agency’s failure to prevent the shooting. The ruse was backed up by the “deep state media,” claimed one of the posts.

The fake theories circulating about the Hoggs have resulted in death threats against the family, the siblings’ mom, Rebecca Boldrick, told The Washington Post.

A “like” by Donald Trump Jr. can have a tremendous effect because he has 2.6 million followers.

Melania Trump vowed shortly before her husband was elected president that if she became first lady, one of her key missions would be to combat online bullying. “Our culture has gotten too mean and too rough, especially to children and teenagers,” she explained in a speech in Philadelphia.

Lauren Hogg told the first lady in her tweet that the conspiracy theories are “re-victimizing” her family. “I’m 14 I should never have had to deal with any of this ... I thought it couldn’t get worse [but] it has because of your family.”

The Hogg siblings are now dealing with an onslaught of social media hate after a gunman killed 17 people at their school.

“It’s unbelievable to me that these people are even saying this,” David Hogg told CNN. He called Donald Trump Jr.’s support for the conspiracies “disgusting.”

The 17-year-old has become a key target for conspiracy theories swirling around Parkland’s student activists. One conspiracy video that presented him as a paid “crisis actor” — not a student — hit No. 1 on YouTube’s trending page before the company took it down earlier this week.

Paleontologen stuiten op een van de grootste Trias-vindplaatsen in de VS (misschien wel de grootste van de hele wereld). Jammer alleen dat de regering-Trump het gebied net heeft vrijgegeven voor een geheel ander soort "opgravingen". :{

Jaw-Dropping Fossils Discovered In Bears Ears (HuffPo)
quote:
A cache of what is believed to be one of the world’s richest collections of Triassic-era fossils has been discovered on national land in Utah where Donald Trump recently eliminated protections to open up the wilderness area to mining.

Researchers, led by paleontologist Rob Gay of the Colorado Canyons Association, unearthed intact remains of phytosaurs — ancient crocodile-like animals — in federal land in what was formerly part of the Bears Ears National Monument. Trump reduced the 1.35 million-acre national monument by 85 percent in December and this month opened up the land to drilling and mining companies. The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, also in Utah, was cut by some 800,000 acres

The discovery, announced Thursday, was revealed at the Western Association of Vertebrate Paleontologists annual conference in St. George, Utah, where researchers also sounded the alarm about the protections gutted by the Trump administration.

Based on a small initial excavation, the 69-yard site may be the “densest area of Triassic-period fossils in the nation, maybe the world,” Gay said in a statement. “It is extremely rare to find intact fossil skulls of specimens from this period.” Three intact long-snouted phytosaur skulls were found. The phytosaurs developed after the first mass extinction that killed 95 percent of the species on Earth. The creatures existed from 251 million to 199 million years ago.
SPOILER
Despite the excitement about the find, there is still an “incredible amount of work yet to be done,” said paleontologist Tracy Thomson, the coordinator of the conference. “We hope that paleontological sites like this one will get the protection they need before more of our prehistoric past is forever lost to looting or irreplaceably damaged by mining in the region.”

Scott Miller of the Wilderness Society said in a statement that protecting such resources was the “very purpose of the Bears Ears National Monument. That president Trump acted to revoke protections for these lands is outrageous, and that he did so despite the Department of the Interior knowing of this amazing discovery is even more shocking. I hope the courts will act quickly to restore protections for Bears Ears before any more fossils are looted from the area and lost to science.”

Trump’s edicts at both Utah national monuments are being challenged in court by five Native American tribes as well as environmental and scientific organizations.

The fossil bed of the specimens is part of the Chinle Formation. It runs through the center of the monument that President Barack Obama designated in 2016. But that sedimentary rock also contains uranium appealing to mining companies. The Washington Post uncovered a campaign by Energy Fuels Resources, a U.S. subsidiary of a Canadian firm, urging the Trump administration to dramatically reduce Bears Ears.

Looting of fossil sites could also become a renewed issue. A portion of skull from the Bears Ears site had been looted by an unlicensed collector who eventually turned in his find to an office of the Bureau of Land Management. The skull had been removed before the national monument was created.

When Trump announced the elimination of protections for the area he said at Utah’s state Capitol: “Some people think that the natural resources of Utah should be controlled by a small handful of very distant bureaucrats located in Washington. And guess what. They’re wrong. Together we will usher in a bright new future of wonder and wealth.”

Gay wrote in a blog post after Trump’s announcement: “We all knew something like this was coming. We hoped for an asteroid or an outbreak of common sense, but neither happened.”

Parkland Survivor To Melania Trump: Stop Donald Trump Jr. From Cyberbullying Me (HuffPo)

[..]

InfoWars' main YouTube channel is two strikes away from being banned

InfoWars, a far-right media organization run by Alex Jones and known for peddling unfounded conspiracy theories, is on thin ice with YouTube after it posted a video that portrayed the survivors of the Parkland school shooting as actors.

The Alex Jones Channel, Infowar's biggest YouTube account, received one strike for that video, a source with knowledge of the account told CNN. YouTube's community guidelines say if an account receives three strikes in three months, the account is terminated.

Jaw-Dropping Fossils Discovered In Bears Ears (HuffPo)

[..]

After testy call with Trump over border wall, Mexico’s president shelves plan to visit White House

quote:
Tentative plans for Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to make his first visit to the White House to meet with President Trump were scuttled this week after a testy call between the two leaders ended in an impasse over Trump’s promised border wall, according to U.S. and Mexican officials.

Peña Nieto was eyeing an official trip to Washington this month or in early March, but both countries agreed to call off the plan after Trump would not agree to publicly affirm Mexico’s position that it would not fund construction of a border wall that the Mexican people widely consider offensive, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a confidential conversation.

Speaking by phone on Feb. 20, Peña Nieto and Trump devoted a considerable portion of their roughly 50 minute conversation to the wall, and neither man would compromise his position.

One Mexican official said Trump “lost his temper.” But U.S. officials described him instead as being frustrated and exasperated, saying Trump believed it was unreasonable for Peña Nieto to expect him to back off his crowd-pleasing campaign promise of forcing Mexico to pay for the wall.

quote:
A Donald Trump and Mike Pence “weekly newsletter” laments the horror of the Parkland school shooting that killed 17 people.

The first Trump tout in the newsletter, headlined “President Trump — Week 57: Safer Schools,” said that the president and first lady Melania Trump “visited with victims and first responders following the shooting and met incredible people they will never forget.” The piece is accompanied by a photo of Trump and the first lady at the hospital bedside of a Parkland shooting survivor wrapped in bandages.

The message adds: “The President is now engaging in an important national conversation about school safety and ways to prevent any future attacks. President Trump is taking steps towards banning gun bump stocks and strengthening background checks for gun purchasers. The President has made his intent very clear: ‘making our schools and our children safer will be our top priority.’”

The newsletter ends with a “contribute” button - not to the victims, families, teachers or schools, but to the Trump/Pence reelection fund.
